at the same time, they're also demolishing portions of the old bridge. kron4's will tran joins us live from the oakland side where he's been following their progress. >> if this opens up possibly before to stay you will see the new pavement. we will show you the other side. on the right side of your screen this is the new eastern span. on the left side is just the contrast. this is the old span. what they're doing right now is not get out about 1,000 ft. section of the span. they built a bike path that can go as far as it could. it will run into old eastern span and they have to knock this out to extend the bike path. there is a lot going on right now and a another great thing about this shutdown is that caltran

told me that because normally they will spend 34 months doing this with all of the traffic but because of the sun shalthis shutdown the able to up and get it done sooner. >> a number of people turned to mass transit for the first day of the bay bridge closure. bart ridership hit record highs yesterday. from midnight yesterday morning to 7:00 last night, more than 390-thousand riders took bart to get around. that's about 62-thousand more riders compared to >> san francisco bay ferry also saw an increase in ridership. just over 47-hundred people rode the ferry during the morning commute yesterday. that's a 57-percent jump over the day before when about 3-thousand people used

the system. boats will continue to run every 45-minutes during commute times today. >> another route commuters are using to get around the bay this morning is the san but that is where we find kron 4's jackie sissel. jackie how is the commute so far? >> i can tell you that it looks like the volume is down from yesterday's but on a normal day it will be pretty heavy. given the circumstances of things are pretty small. the bridge itself is full capacity and the traffic was moving slow. the key word is that a camel we all morning long. we are hoping that we get this same field today. i can tell you the right now, the span itself is full and the traffic continues to us go through.

road and alum rock avenue in east san jose. willofficers attempted to stop the vehicle, but it fled the area. the car crashed and officers reported shots being fired. one suspect was found suffering from at least one gunshot wound. no word on their condition. >> shortly before 4:45 a.m. a suspect riots of the safeway in san jose near meridian and san carlos. this historistory was open at te time, employees called the police shortly after the suspect left the store. a shorofficers saw the men that match the description of the suspect and approached him. officers saw the the suspect had a gun. officers felt

199,000 acres. mandatory evacuations for toulumne and willow springs have been lifted. fire crews are working to protect the hetch hetchy reservoir. and, both the tuolumne and merced sequoia groves inside yosemite national park. meanwhile, the u-s park service are building fire lines around the two sequoia groves threatened by the rim fire. crews have set-up a sprinkler system around the trees to moisten the fuels -- making them less likely to burn >> the rim fire in and around yosemite national park continues to grow, however firefighters are making progress.

as heavy as it was yesterday. when i spoke with kron 4 urs jackie sissel he told us that it was not heavy as it was it yesterday but it is reaching the saturation point. the good news is that it state moving and we did not have any problems with accidents. but as the volume builds up on the ride across the span it will mean heavier traffic for the sir francis drake boulevard. >> it is pretty foggy at the golden gate bridge. let's find out what we can expect from the weather. >> there is a lot of dense fog along the coastline. san francisco's of visibility has improved but it is still muggy. the

than normal traffic on the two bay bridge alternates. richmond san rafael bridge and the ba mateo bridge. we have had 4 to five accidents and the most recent was a new one at the toll plaza in the westbound direction. this ever-present there are no lanes that are blocked but it is slow on both 880 southbound approaching 92 pin westbound which is slow. the conditions are much better for the san mateo bridge and that was it yesterday. here is a live camera look. actually this does not look much heavier than the normal commute day. because of a lighter commute even with the extra traffic coming down from the bay bridge we are still seen a pretty good ride. for those of you who normally commute the san mateo bridge

you should head to the dumbarton bridge. here on the richmond san rafael bridge we are getting full to capacity. there is not a big wait for westbound ride. but we are still looking in heavy conditions across the span. sir francis drake boulevard is okay. here is the golden gate bridge with the volume is up over a normal day but not much in the southbound direction. there are no delays even with the additional traffic coming from the richmond center fell bridge. >> we have team coverage of day two of the bay bridge closure. crews have been working on a round-the-clock to connect interstate 80 to the new span. at the same time, they are also demolishing portions of old bridge. kron4 will tran
