(male announcer) this is the bay area news station, kron 4 news starts now. >> top stories we are following for you on this monday, september 2nd, labor day. we are counting down the re- opening of the bay bridge. we'll tell you what cal- trans is saying about the progress of construction on the new span. and we are learning new details about a shooting in union city. we'll tell you what the victim was doing right before police arrived. and watching the weather and traffic this morning as we take a live look outside from our roof camera here on van ness avenue, looking back at san francisco. we are now almost 24 hours away from the opening of the new eastern span of the bay bridge. the bridge has been closed since wednesday night but will open back up tomorrow morning. kron 4's j.r. stone spent the day on the new eastern span of the bay bridge and gives us an up close look at the progress that has been made. >> anticipation is building. i went on the eastern span and the views are spectacular. the crews are still out here because work is still being done. >> at this point it could accommodate traffic but we are not complete. >> reporter: right now, it will be open on schedule >> reporter: . >> it is the target at tuesday, 5:00 reporter our camera crews have been given a tour. the bicycle pedestrian ramp is going to be opening on tuesday there is still a lot

calm him down, but it all unfolded quickly. as kron 4's alecia reid reports, police tried to calm him down, to no avail. police were back at the home of the shooting - folowing up with family members also knocking on doors and talking to neighbors. the police commander tells us the man shot to death by union city officers was outside his home firing wildly -- some bullets missed a woman and her baby driving by. witnesses say he was visibly angry and screaming >> yelling outside, which i clearly heard him use those cuss words, and a lady saying, screaming pleading no no no. and it seems like the more she pleaded the more it was boom boom boom. it was like he was going bizerk. he said no, ive had it, that's it. it was very scary. >> reporter: police tell us the 2 trained hostage negotiators plus an officer that deals with the mentally ill were at the scene but couldn't sway him. the commanding officer says once confronted, the man pointed directly at them. and in order to protect themselves and the crowd of witnesses behind them, officers fired and he was killed instantly. neighbors are shocked at the turn of events. >> he was always nice to us, and as neighbors we always looked out for each other. so i really can't tell you what happened or why it happened. >> reporter: we did try talking to the family. they asked us to respect their privacy at this time. understandably this is a very difficult situation. we're told the man grew up in this home, and recently moved back to stay with his father after his mother passed away. in union cityalecia reid kron 4 news.

the fire fight against the rim fire in yosemite continues this morning. more than 222-thousand acres have burned. and now it's been upped to the fourth largest fire in state history. the blaze has burned more than 348 square miles. containment is still at 45 percent. kron four's philippe djegal is in tuolumne county. and, has more on the investigation into how the fire may have started. >> reporter: more than two weeks after the rim fire started in a remote area more than 20 miles west of yosemite national park. fire officials are still being tight lipped about what sparked the blaze. rim fire spokesman mike williams says the u-s forest service will run the investigation. he says at this time. investigators haven't determined whether humans or nature casued the fire. >> we do not know what caused the fire. as far as what speculation's house panel you lying >> meanwhile. fire fighters continue burning operations to stop the forward spread.

for the last couple of days. different. earlier, it was heavier work. now, it is more cosmetic. you can see the bridge behind me. and in just 30 minutes, tomorrow it should be opened. they have not fallen behind. this is a video. they have been repaving. and taking down that 1000 old section to extend the bicycle path. what they want to is make sure that the final preparations are in place. and we tried to ask them yesterday is there a chance that they could open the bridge before the deadline but they do not want to

the rim fire in yosemite continues this morning. more than 222-thousand acres have burned. and now it's been upped to the fourth largest fire in state history. the blaze has burned more than 348 square miles. containment is still at 45 percent. burning now for more than two weeks - the u-s forest service says the rim fire could continue for a few more weeks. crews from san diego county are among the more than 5- thousand firefighters trying to slow the fires progress. while some evacuation orders were lifted.others went into effect yesterday.cutting off public access to a number of small communities. the fires destroyed at least 111 structures. police patroled one neighborhood, in case flames made a run at homes. >> 'i dont want to lose my property. i mean we rent, but i dont want to lose our place because its beautiful up there - its our life.' >> the fire is still a good distance from yosemite national parks major attractions. and despite the smoke, campgrounds were full this holiday weekend. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. lightning has been ruled out. >> coming up on the kron 4 morning news. japan's top nuclear regulator is raising safety concerns about hastily built storage tanks and their foundations. we'll tell you what the problem is coming up.
