>> following breaking news out of the south bay. two people have been killed in a head on collision. new details coming up. >> top stories we are following for you on this monday, september 2nd, labor day. we are counting down the re- opening of the bay bridge. we'll tell you what cal- trans is saying about the progress of construction on the new span. and here's a live look at the toll plaza. shaping up to be a nice labor day. >> were following some breaking news out of san jose right now. police are investigating a crash that killed two people. officers responded to a crash in the area of skyport drive and north first street. one person was pronounced dead at the scene and the other victim was transported to a hospital where he died. we have crews en route to the scene. we will continue to bring you details as we get them. we are just one day away

given a first hand look at what has been done. demolition has now been completed on a one thousand foot long section of the old eastern span to make room for the new bicycle and pedestrian path. as for the work that needs to be finished, crews are still striping and putting barrior rails in place--- but officials say even weather won't stop the bridge from opening on time. ".delay the opening." >> if there is any inclement weather it still is on schedule. there is a special opening event happening this afternoon. it is a private event with a number of area officials attending. with the governor out of town, he will not be attending the event. >> new details are coming out this morning in the union city officer involved shooting over the weekend.

police say before they arrived on scene, the man had already fired 15 to 20 rounds just outside of his house, some of which almost hit a passing car with a child inside. investigators also say 2 trained hostage negotiators plus an officer were on scene but couldn't persuade him to stop. the commanding officer says once confronted, the man pointed the gun directly at them. and that's when police opened fire, killing him instantly. as you might imagine, residents of that neighborhood were shocked. he was always nice to us, >> and as neighbors we always looked out for each other. so i really can't tell you what happened or why it happened. >> we did try talking to the family. they asked us to respect their privacy at this time. understandably this is a very difficult situation. we're told the man grew up in this home, and recently moved back to stay with his father after his mother passed away. in a man and woman believed to be family members of the suspect were taken in for questioning. the officers involved will be placed on leave as the

>> sheriff's deputies in contra costa county are investigating a deadly shooting in rodeo. they say 36 year old chad hornsby was shot friday night in the 200 block of california street. he was found lying in the street. deputies and paramedics tried to revive hornsby but he died at the scene. so far, no suspects have been arrested. >> the u-s forest service says the rim fire could keep burning for a few more weeks. here's the latest update. more than 222-thousand acres have burned. making the rim fire the fourth largest wildfire in state history. the blaze has burned more than 351-square miles. containment is still at 45- percent. the fires destroyed at least 111 structures. >> with new information of an overdose on a child in the bay area. and the latest

released in connection with the death of an infant who was exposed to drugs through his mother's milk. a report by the sacramento bee reveals social workers were required to create a safety plan for 8 month old ryder salmen. pictured here. he died last september after overdosing on a fatal mix of xanax, methadone and a painkiller. his mother has been charged with murder. that report would have determined whether or not ryder would stay in his mother's care. she had been warned five months before his death to stop breastfeeding because of high levels of methadone found in ryder's bloodstream. a new warning label will

life jacket at the time. rescue crews later found his body. his name isn't being released right now. >> in daly city, a hiker is recovering this morning after being stranded in a cave. rescue crews went out on a call about a person who fell more than 100 feet down a cliff at mussel rock park early yesterday morning. but rising tides and steep terrain made it difficult for crews to find the hiker. eventually, they found the person inside a cave on the side of a cliff. the hiker was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries. >> the fight against the rim fire in yosemite continues this morning. more than 222-thousand acres have burned. and now it's been upped to the fourth largest fire in state history. the blaze has burned more than 351-square miles. containment is still at 45- percent. the fires destroyed at least 111 structures.

death of a 1-year-old boy who was shot in the head in new york city. police say the parents of antiq hennis were pushing him in a stroller across a street in brooklyn yesterday evening when multiple shots rang out. the child was rushed to a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound to the left side of his face but did not survive his injuries. he was declared dead at the hospital. police say antiq hennis was being pushed in a stroller by his parents sunday night in the brownsville section of brooklyn when shots were fired and the child was struck in the head. a local bishop who drove the parents to the hospital says, "i grew up in this neighborhood and i've seen a lot - but this is the worst." a new york family is 19- month-old baby -- who was shot and killed in his "it hurts my heart to hear "it's devastating and it's terrible our young people have to understand that guns
