here at the toll plaza is doing pretty well. we're not hearing of any delays whatsoever going across the upper deck sorry there is no project anymore. but heading into the westbound direction toward san francisco. san mateo bridge looking good very quiet at this hour. your drive time just to up to 30 minutes. last but not least here's the live look at your golden gate bridge southbound 1013 it is a little hazy with dense fog. >>james:the cleveland man who held three women captive for more than a decade. is dead. we'll have the latest on the prison death of ariel castro. and the new bay bridge is open for business. but with a new bridge come new challenges for engineers. corrections officials in ohio say the cleveland man who was serving a life sentence plus 1,000 years for holding three women captive was in protective custody behind bars, but was not under suicide watch. officials say 58-year-old ariel castrol hanged himself in his cell last night. cnn's ed payne has the details.

opening, hundreds of thousands of drivers have made their way across the span. this bridge is safer than the old one, and ready to withstand an earthquake. >> there are seismic monitors inside the bridge that are measuring seismic movement and loads on the bridge and gives us feedback. so we haven't heard or seen anything that would lead us to believe it's not doing the job it was designed to do. the bridge was constructed to carry the same, if not more weight than the original bay bridge. so far officials are very pleased with its performance.

>> it's currently 280 thousand vehicles a day, still 5 lanes of traffic on both sides, but now we have shoulders on both sides. there are definitely a few strategic differences. it's no longer a double deck structure.and east and westbound lanes are side by side there is still a lot of fundamental work to be done. the broken bolts are on their way to being fixed, and the bike paths need to be finished. we're told those are minor compared to getting this structure open, where drivers are much safer on the new bay bridge alecia reid kron 4 news. thousands of people are crossing the new eastern span for the first time each day this week. kron 4's charles clifford shows us. the changes you'll see on the new bridge.

for the first time ever, bike riders and pedestrians are able to cross the bay bridge it is all part of the new construction on the span. the path runs along the south side of the new span. it has an outside lane for pedestrians, plus a separate area for bike lanes in each direction. bicyclists on the lanes were thrilled to finally ride on the bridge. the path stops at the new suspension tower. there everyone will have to turn

around. the bike path should be fully completed by early 2015 and will provide access to yerba buena island. firefighters are making progress battling the wildfire burning in and around yosemite national park. nearly 236- thousand acres have burned since the fire started august 17th.

which provides water to 2- point- 6 million san francisco area residents. remains unaffected, despite ash falling on the water. the debate over racial profiling by police, has led to a new policy in san jose. starting september 1st, officers began following a new procedure. allowing them to record the ethnicity of people who are detained, but not actually arrested. two years in the making, the new so-called 'limited detention' policy was in part recommended by the city's independent police auditor. amid complaints from minority groups which felt they were being targeted by police. under the new policy, documentation will occur only in cases where officers stop someone and

lobby forsmashing into at least two other boats during a clumsy turn. the coast guard is now investigating. one of the boats that got smashed by the police was so badly damaged - it later sank. you can see the huge hole in its side. an officer on board the police boat that caused the accident did "not" say he was sorry.instead, he told the owner to 'relax.'

android operating system is being named after the kitcat bar. this android statue, designed with kit-kat bars, stands outside google. kit-kat packaging will also feature android's mascot. the tech giant is known for naming its operating systems after desserts. but using a brand- name candy name. is a first. the kit-kat android system is expected this fall. nokia's mobile phone business once ruled the handset world. now microsoft will scoop it all up for a mere 7 billion dollars. nokia phones already uses microsoft's mobile software. so why was this deal needed? cnn's jim boulden reports. >>: the man who put together the 7 billion deal says the addition of nokia would transform microsoft. >>: when we go from being a

documents which indicate. bart management has been a roadblock to continuing the kron 4's dan kerman tells us. as a result, much of the cooling off period has been wasted. since a judge called for a 60 day cooling off period in the bart labor dispute, the trains have been running? but since that august 11th decision, bart management and its two largest unions, atu and seiu have not met once? management likes to say meeting dates are up to the state mediator. but kron 4 has obtained documents indicating the unions have wanted to meet and bart management has not? this email dated august 14 from seiu to the state mediator lists 7 dates during the month of august that the bart union is free to negotiate. in response, bart management attorney thomas hock send seiu this email

two days later stating its last offer was in fact a final offer, and that ?engaging in ongoing or further discussions would not be fruitful? because that final offer was not presented to all members of the union. the union followed up with an email that same day calling the so called ?final offer? an ?unfair labor practice? and once again asked management to meet. bart management attorney thomas hock responded by saying there was ?nothing in the court?s order? that specifies any required meeting schedule.? the unions finally contacted the attorney general, and though they didn?t receive a response management as agreed to meet on the 12 and 17th of september, less than a month before the cooling off period expires.

stockholm, where he'll meet with sweden's prime minister and other leaders. the president then heads to russia for the g-20 summit. that summit was supposed to concentrate on the global economy but it will probably be dominated by the international crisis over the alleged use of chemical weapons in syria's civil war. russian president vladimir putin is warning the west against taking one-sided action in syria. but he also says russia could support a u.n. backed military strike if it is proved that damascus used poison gas on its own people. meanwhile. back in washington. the senate foreign relations committee could vote today on authorizing the use of force against the syrian regime. the committee's top members drafted a resolution late

we are back. it is 445. a tough day for many high school students in the east bay, where a funeral service was held for a danville teen who would have been a senior this year. robert orlando died last week, a day before class, when the car he was in. slammed into a tree. police do not suspect drugs or alcohol played a role in

in san francisco crews are cleaning up after a car crashed into an apartment building early this morning. this is video from the scene of the crash on the 15- hundred block of franklin street. according to san francisco police the suspect crashed into a vacant building when making a possible illegal turn. a building inspector says the car went 15-feet into the building. no injuries have been reported. we're following a developing story out of san leandro. a body was found inside a trailer that caught fire early this morning. the flames broke out at the estudillo trailer park on grand avenue.

police are still searching for the hit & run driver. who was involved in a crash that killed two women on monday in san jose. the victims have been identified as carmen zavala and cristina deleon castro. an emotional vigil was held last night for the two victims at the intersection of skyport drive and north first street in san jose where the accident happened. family members of the victims say they hope the driver who caused this accident will be arrested soon.
