top stories we are following this morning. recent killing of a san francisco state student was random and unprovoked. we'll hear reactions from fellow students. and some are calling it the greatest comeback in the history of any sport.

we'll take a look at oracle team u-s-a's win of the america's cup. and what is going to happen if bart workers go on strike for the second time this year. we'll take a look at the plan to keep trains running. police have arrested and charged a man who they say shot and killed a san francisco state student as he was getting off muni. this is video of the suspect nikhom theph-a-kay-sone. taken right before the shooting. it happened monday night at randolph and bright streets. police say it appears the attack was random and unprovoked. the victim is identified as 20-year -old justin valdez. kron 4's philippe djegal hears from other s-f state students. >> it's not a lot to say. it's sad. >> students having a tough time understanding why velez was killed. gun down monday night while exiting muni at the intersection of

"this is truly a tragedy for justin's friends and family, and for the entire university community. i have reached out to justin's family to offer our heartfelt concern and to assure them that we stand ready to offer support and assistance at this difficult time." a new development on the beating of a pleasanton man. who remains in a coma this police are now questioning four people who were present during the attack. 51 year old david lamont was left unconscious last saturday. he's still in critical condition at the hospital. police say they've interviewed three pleasanton teenagers and a 18 year old who lives out of

town. right now, they are not considered suspects. and have been cooperative with police. it was quite a day on the san francisco bay. as 'oracle team usa' completes one of the greatest comebacks in sailing history. the team won the 34th america's cup. beating 'emirates team new zealand' in the final race. tens of thousands of fans packed into americas cup village today to watch the stunning comeback. and they marveled at the win. oracle team usa might have won even sooner, but two of its victories were scratched because it was deemed to have illegally modified its boat. if there is another strike next month, bart officials

and the other transit agencies say they want to do all they can to keep people moving. kron 4's charles clifford has details on what they have planned. >>charles:during october, there are usually more cars on the roadways and more people riding bart than there are in july. thats because schools are back in session and fewer people are on vacation. if there is another bart strike next month, the metropolitan transportation commission expects heavier congestion and longer commute times than what we saw in july. in response, they and the bay area's transit agencies are working on a beefed up plan to help people get around. during the july strike, bart ran 60-78 private shuttle busses. this time, they want to bring in 200 shuttles and add 4

additional stations. bart also wants to run a limited number of trains through the transbay tube using non-union managers as operators. the unions are strongly opposed to that idea and the bart board of directors would have to approve the use of any temporary train operators. the san francisco bay ferry would also run additional routes, just as they did in july, but they would be getting one additional ferry from the golden gate ferry system. caltrans is considering extending hov hours along interstates 80, 880 and 680. they may also add a temporary hov lane along highway 24. they may also allow lift truck restrictions along 580, in order to relieve congestion on 880. and finally, ac transit, which provides bus service in the east bay and across the bay bridge, is currently not planning any service changes.. although final plans are expected to be announced later this month. in the newsroom, charles clifford kron 4 news. >>james: a south bay teacher will be

arraigned today for allegedly having sex with a student. school officials say.hugo cortes guzman.taught math at santa clara high school. on monday, they received a tip that he had a sexual encounter with a 17-year- old student. an investigation was launched and guzman was arrested a day later. at this point police believe there is only one victim. but their investigation continues. guzman will appear in santa clara county superior court around 1:30 this afternoon. coming up on the kron 4 morning news.

in the chilling video you can see the shooter, aaron alexis, running up and down hallways and a stairwell of building 197 -- brandishing a shotgun. police say, alexis altered the shotgun by sawing off the barrel. and he etched into the side of the weapon, among other phrases, quote - ""end to the torment" and "better off this way" the f-b-i today shared more details about alexis' mental health and his apparent motive. federal investigators,

forces have just released video of the aftermath of the collapsed parts of westgate mall in nairobi. the video shows the collapsed parking garage where cars are falling into the rubble, extensive damage to the infrastructure of the mall, and lots of rubble floating up into the air. at least 61 civilians and six kenyan security officers died in the four- day attack and rescue efforts. but the death toll will rise as recovery workers retrieve bodies buried in the rubble of the partially collapsed mall.

kenyan forces killed five terrorists, and 11 others are in custody over possible links to the attacks. federal transportation officials are looking into more complaints about asiana airlines. they are looking into whether the airline failed to provide adequate services to crash victims after the accident last july. kron 4's j.r. stone is following the story. and talked with some of the

less than a week after two people were shot in san francisco's potrero hill, * another victim is recovering after being shot last night. it happened near the corner of 23rd and arkansas streets around seven. the victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. this comes just days after a 24-year-old man and a 21-

year-old woman were both shot. the man later died from his injuries. police are still searching for the gunmen. cal train is back up and running this morning. but firefighters remain on high alert. this after a brush fire broke out in burlingame, causing major delays.for

this is video from our helicopter partnership with a-b-c 7. the flames broke out on california drive and dufferin avenue shortly after 6 p-m last night. firefighters quickly contained the two- and a- half acre fire.but remained on scene monitoring hot spots. no one was hurt.

train schedules are expected to resume as normal this morning. bart officials are making sure commuters can get around the bay area if another strike happens next month. transportation officials released a 21-million- dollar contingency plan to provide free charter buses, extra car pool lanes, and even limited train service run by managers. if no deal is reached, bart employees could strike as early as october 11th. that's when a cooling-off that's when a cooling-off unbelievable. shhhhh! in our day, we didn't have u-verse high speed internet. yeah, our babysitter didn't have a million ways to serve mom up on a silver platter. we had to count sheep to fall asleep.
