. >> reporter: the typhoon has destroyed whole neighborhoods. it is assumed the death toll will keep rising. >> nobody in america can imagine what 195 mile-per-hour winds would do to their home. this is going to be a bowling ball that rolls right through the southern philippines, devastating everything in its path, for 20 miles on both sides. there will be nothing left. there won't be a home standing.

>> reporter: it is expected the death toll will go up. the only thing positive, the storm did move quickly. there could have been many more casualties if it had lingered. >> there are still images coming from the philippines, giving us a sense of how this is impacting people and property. take a look at this picture. this is a home, a house being swallowed by the angry sea. then you have debris everywhere, littering the roadway here. you see some people have emerged from their homes to survey the damage. this woman taking her two young children to an evacuation shelter. and trees are down everywhere. people are trying to get the trees out of the roadways. the long road to recovery and rebuilding begins. pam? >> i'm here in the weather center, with our chief meteorologist jacquelyn bennett. she's been tracking the path of this massive typhoon since yesterday when we got wind of it. where is it now? >> west of the philippine

islands, moving to the south china sea and it's going to weaken as it moves through. >> glad to hear that. >> when it came into the philippines, it was a strong category 5. the categories are designed by wind speed. it left the philippines as a category 4. right now, it's a category 3. the sustained winds are about 125 miles an hour. and the range of sustained winds for a category 3, 111 to 129 miles per hour. so let's go ahead and track this out. you can see again, it's sitting to the west of the philippine islands. the latest observation from this morning, winds of 125 miles an hour now, but as it moved over the ocean here, it is going to be weakeng, because when it came into the philippines, these types of systems, they thrive on very warm sea surface temperatures. and over the south china sea, it's not quite as warm. so it's going to be weakening to a category 3 as it makes landfall. you see it's going to make

landfall around saturday morning, moving through vietnam, going to continue to weaken and weaken very quickly. you see already by sunday, it's weakening to a tropical depression. so again, wind speeds by that point are going to be down well under 100 miles an hour. it's going to continue to weaken and move up through china heading into sunday, late sunday. well, the vietnamese american community is closely watching the storm's progress toward their former homeland. the killer typhoon is page 1 news in vietnamese newspapers and very much on the mind of these folks as they sipped their coffee this afternoon in the little saigon neighborhood of san jose. most say their loved ones are accustomed to bad weather this time of year and know what to do. >> maybe the storm come, maybe. >> they know what to do. >> they know. they can live with that for

mateo bridge toll plaza, past the accident scene, which is on the other side. the headlights in this commute direction are moving okay, even though traffic is heavy on this friday evening. developing tonight, in a show of solidarity with the teenager set ablaze on a bay area bus, some students and ach school wore skirts today. luke sasha fleishman had on a skirt when he was set on fire on a bus earlier this week. his parents say he does not identify as a male or a female. a 16-year-old suspect has been charged as a suspect. >> reporter: here at maybeck high school in berkeley, take a look at this amazing show of support, all for sasha fleishman. you can see everybody arrived on this friday wearing skirts. sasha was wearing a skirt when he was set on fire monday, riding an ac transit bus. he was reportedly set on fire by suspect richard thomas, who

has since been charged with a hate cram. sasha is now recovering at a burn center in san francisco. but this day was not about the crime, but to show solidarity to sasha, whose parents say he doesn't call himself a boy or girl. >> it was all the students' idea to rally for sasha. lot of us are wearing skirts in support of sasha. >> including you? >> absolutely. this, of course, is a horrific crime. it's very hard for us to make sense of, and we're all processing that and dealing with that. and i think coming together like this helps that healing process. >> reporter: students say they are proud to wear skirts for sasha and hope that he recovers as quickly as possible. in berkeley, kron 4 news. >> here you can see the students and teachers at maybeck high school today

worthy. however, it's not going to be another america's cup deal. it will be powered by large engines so it can move and it will. google says it will be used for a variety of purposes, some educational. this image speculates what the inside will be. google says it will be a tourist attraction with exhibition space and support facilities. sounds like a floating apple store to me. there is a second barge in san francisco rumored to be another such floating showroom and learning center for google. the barges are docked at treasure island right now. there's another off the coast of portland, maine. no word on when people might be able to visit the barges. still ahead, a problem for wal-mart. what an employee reportedly told a same-sex couple that made them leave the story. >> and the navy yard shooting. why the family of one victim thinks the government should pay up. i love watching tv outside.

. brand-new developments tonight in the nfl bullying scandal. the man being called the ring leader of the miami dolphins alleged bullying problem, ritchie incognito, flew to los angeles today. he just landed. now, jonathan martin claims he was a victim of bullying and martin is now getting help for his emotional issues in southern california. a news crew just got a few words out of incognito, right after he got off the plane in l.a. >> listen, are you here to meet with jonathan martin? >> at this point, i'm not making a comment. >> are you here to apologize in any way? >> i'm just walking through the airport. >> i understand, but are you here to meet with him? can you tell me, lot of people say you called him a half n- word. did you say that? i mean, this is your chance. just want your side of the story. did you say those things? did you say you're going to kill him or get his mother? >> incognito isn't saying much about his trip to l.a., but it's more than a little curious he's flying across the country

to a place where martin happens to be staying and getting treatment. we'll have to see if an apology is on incognito's agenda or if the trip is a mere coincidence. now, this trip to l.a. comes as we are learning more about incognito's alleged off- the-field behavior. police apparently investigated incognito last year for sexually harassing a woman at a dolphins golf tournament. the report states incognito used a golf club to touch the woman in an inappropriate way and then used the club to knock her sunglasses off her head before pouring water in her face. the female volunteer said incognito refused to apologize, which prompted her to tell police. no charges were filed. also, espn reports incognito held meetings for dolphins offensive linemen at a south florida strip club. if players didn't show up to the meetings, incognito would apparently find them and chastise them. last night, we heard from jonathan martin's camp for the

first time. his attorney released a statement saying martin was harassed by teammates, plural, for 18 months, his entire nfl career, after graduating from stanford. the statement saying martin was the victim of daily verbal attacks and malicious physical attack from teammates. it does not name incognito specifically. the 30-year-old is suspended indefinitely and there is no timetable for martin's return to the nfl. we will stay on top of developments out of l.a., where again, incognito recently landed. a wal-mart worker is out of a job after a gay couple says he told them to leave the store. the couple says the janitor confronted them at a wal-mart store in chickasaw, oklahoma. >> reporter: wal-mart parking lots are usually packed with people, all kinds, in and out, every day. but for jonathan and his boyfriend miguel, a stop for cookies wasn't so sweet when a

janitor approached the couple. >> we weren't holding hands, weren't kissing, weren't doing anything inappropriate. we were looking at cookies. he asked did you know what happened in anadarko? i was, like, no. he was, like, two guys got married. i said, cool. he said not in my bible. >> reporter: he says the janitor made it clear. >> you're not allowed in my store. >> reporter: hurtful words to the chickasaw couple. >> i was angry at the whole situation. >> reporter: after telling a wal-mart manager, the two left. >> out of everything, wal- mart's the place we can't go because we're gay? >> reporter: the american civil liberties union says the encounter comes at an interesting time. senators just passed a bill-- >> in our own backyard, a couple doesn't feel welcome to shop in their hometown. on one hand, it says we've made a lot of progress, but also

demonstrates we have a long way to go. >> reporter: wal-mart says it's investigating and will take appropriate action. the couple says the janitor's words changed them. >> i can't be myself because people will come up to me and start hating me for something that's not even involving them. >> a wal-mart spokesperson called the incident, quote, completely unacceptable and said the associate involved is no longer with the company. well, across the country today in many airports, travelers saw scenes like this, tsa agents stopping for a moment of silence. this was the scene at lax. they were honoring their colleague killed a week ago by a gunman, the memory of geraldo hernandez. police say 23-year-old paul ciancia was the gunman. he was shot by police. he remains hospitalized. this was the moment of silence in hawaii. lot of travelers, once they realized what was happening, they stopped and joined in. coming up at 6:00, we'll show

you how the agent who died was remembered here in the bay area. and the family of a woman killed in the navy yard shooting in washington, dc is now suing the government. this was the scene last september. aaron alexis got into one of the buildings. you remember he was running up and down stairways and hallways looking for victims. he was eventually shot and killed, but not before 12 people died. the family of one of the victims is now suing the navy, suing the veterans affairs department, asking for more than $37 million. they say the agencies missed or ignored many signs that alexis had mental problems and was a big risk. a live look outside this afternoon from our roof cam, downtown san francisco, where we are seeing clear skies. in fact, it's going to stay clear tonight and into tomorrow. high temperatures today, a little cooler than yesterday, especially for our bayshores and near the coastline, also down to the south bay, but

still pretty mild to the inland valleys. 76 in pleasanton this afternoon. 75 in antioch. 79 in livermore. also in the 70s through the north bay. right now, temperatures largely sitting in the 60s. 62 in san francisco. 65 in san jose. 62 also in santa rosa. again, we'll keep the clear skies in the forecast tonight. here's a look at satellite and radar picture. clear through most of northern california. we're still catching a little bit of high cloud coverage from the storm track to the north of us, but it's going to stay to the north of us over the next couple of days. that will start to change, though, as we move into next week. tonight, again, clear skies. a little bit of patchy fog through a couple places, not widespread at all. tomorrow, we'll see mostly sunny skies, mild temperatures once again, but cooler than what we saw today. into next week, we do have a chance of rain. now looks like it will mainly be focused in the north bay and into tuesday morning. more on that in a moment. first, temperatures, 40s and 50s out the door tomorrow

morning, quickly getting into the 60s, even the 70s by noon. that's the yellow on the screen for the north bay, the south bay. we'll see more 70-degree readings heading into the 2:00 hour. 60s inside the bay. upper 50s at the immediate coastline. here's a look at your extended forecast. we'll be seeing slight cooling out there tomorrow. still a mix of upper 60s, low 70s. for sunday, additional cooling. monday, same thing. more cloud cover into monday as well as the storm gets closer to the bay area. looks like the biggest impacts will be the additional cloud cover and the cooler temperatures. on tuesday morning, there is a slight chance of showers for the north bay. not looking very likely. then improving conditions through the rest of the work week. next, a father tried to teach his son a lesson, but the lesson turns deadly. >> then, more people back to work, but who is hiring and what does it really mean for the economy?

. tom cruise keeps saying things to get him in trouble. tmz says it has legal documents in which the actor says his job is as grueling as fighting the war in afghanistan. that's his job as a professional actor, remember. cruise recently sat for a deposition in his $50 million lawsuit against a magazine publisher that claimed he had abandoned his daughter suri. cruise reportedly said his location shoots for movies are like serving a tour of duty in afghanistan, calling it brutal. more on that tom cruise story, tonight at 11:30 on the insider, here on kron 4. pam? coming up, we are still tracking the typhoon. it has caused untold damage in the philippines and now is heading west to a new target. >> then, low income bay area families, out in the cold for hours, hoping to get some help for the holiday.

. now at 5:30, tracking one of the worst storms ever to hit the earth. it slammed into the philippines and this video showed the force. two barges crashed into each other. crews had to be rescued from the sea. at least four people have been killed from the storm. the storm is on the move tonight. i'm here in the weather center with our chief meteorologist jacquelyn bennett who has been tracking the storm. glad to hear it is beginning to slow down. >> it's beginning to weaken over the south china sea. the reason is because these storms thrive on very warm ocean temperatures and the south china sea is not as warm as where the storm came from, which was east of the philippines. if you take a look at the satellite image right now, where the storm's west of the philippines, you can see it's still very, very expansive,

covering a wide area, and the eye of the storm is now about here, again, moving through the south china sea. here are the philippine islands here. right now we are seeing wind speeds sustained at 125 miles, just to the west of the philippine islands. that would make it a category 3, strong category 3 storm. as it moves through the south china sea, sea surface temperatures are lower in this region here than down to the south. it's going to continue to weaken as it tracks up toward vietnam. looks like it's going to make landfall as a category 3 storm, a weak category 3 storm. that is between 111 and 129 miles per hour, the wind speeds. then as it moves over land, it quickly weakens. making landfall saturday. sunday, turning into a tropical depression. that hollow circle indicates a tropical depression, which is a much weaker storm. good news, it is weakening. it's still going to make

landfall in vietnam as a hurricane. they call it a typhoon there, but it's the same thing. it will continue to track to the north and weaken through sunday, into monday. there is good news for americans who are struggling with mental health issues. today, health & human services secretary kathleen sebelius announced new rules that will make mental healthcare more accessible. the announcement comes as the administration, of course, is still reeling from the failed launch of healthcare.gov. >> good morning, everybody. >> reporter: speaking to healthcare professionals in atlanta, secretary sebelius did not announce a new law, but rather, new rules that put teeth into a law signed by president george w. bush in 2008. the mental health parity and addiction equality act requires doctors and insurers to treat mental illnesses as they would physical illnesses, but there's been no enforcement until now. >> finally puts mental health

services and substance abuse on equal footing with physical health services. >> reporter: but the big announcement was overshadowed by lingering backlash from the implementation of the affordable care act. secretary sebelius was asked how the administration plans to help those kicked off their insurance plans since the rollout. >> there isn't, i would say at this point, a specific plan. the president has asked to take a look at those coverage options. >> reporter: as for her boss, president obama spoke in new orleans today. he talked about the economy. >> the deficits are going down. >> reporter: last month's government shutdown. >> the shutdown harmed our jobs market. >> reporter: and immigration reform. >> it affects our broken immigration system. >> reporter: even the nation's infrastructure. >> it's smart infrastructure projects. >> reporter: before finally addressing the issue of obama care. >> we're going to fix the website, because the insurance plans are there. they are good, and millions of americans are already finding they will gain better coverage for less cost and it's the

right thing to do. >> reporter: in washington, stacy chohan, kron 4 news. this week, police in ames, iowa chased after a van that had been reported stolen. the driver of the van that went zooming through town ending up on the campus of iowa state university, and that is where an officer eventually shot and killed a 19-year-old student who had been driving. only now are we finding out that he wasn't even a car thief, just a kid whose father decided to teach a lesson because he took the van without permission. you're about to see the last moments of that chase starting with a police car ramming the van, ending with a string of gunshots. >> off camera, another officer shot and killed tyler comstock, who was a student at the school. it is not clear why he fled. tyler's family is blaming the police. again, it was his father james who had called police to go after him. pam? today, another pedestrian killed on a freeway, making this the third pedestrian death on a bay area freeway this week. police say a man was killed when two cars struck him, as he walked across a connector ramp in san jose early this morning. according to police, the victim was walking across the lanes of northbound 280 towards highway 87. the pedestrian died at the scene. police are still investigating that crash. yesterday, a female pedestrian was fatally struck while walking on westbound 580 in oakland. that crash closed the two left lanes for almost two hours. investigators have not yet determined why that woman was walking on the highway there.

and on wednesday, a woman was killed on highway 680 near the walnut creek bart station. police believe the woman jumped or fell from a bart train track overcrossing onto highway 680. happening right now, low income families are registering for food and for toys for the holidays. it happening at the sacred heart community center. that's in san jose. about 100 people were already lined up before 6:00 this morning. many of them had been waiting since yesterday afternoon. mike peloton has the latest from san jose. >> reporter: registration started early this morning, now under way, as organizers are serving the hundreds of people waiting in line. the line stretches around the corner, as hundreds braved the cold and bundled in jackets, camping out overnight in order to register. through the program, families can receive a thanksgiving meal in a few weeks. next month, they can get toys to give their kids over the

holidays. many families tell me these are items they cannot afford. programs say over the holiday season they will serve over 7000 families. demand is just as high as in recent years. although the economy is improving, that also means housing prices and rent are a lot higher. >> everything adds up. right now, i'm not working, so it's kind of hard for me. >> it's a big help. it helps my whole family. i'm a single mother, four kids. >> no other way to pay for all of this stuff. turkey, sides, toys. >> it's kind of expensive when you have four children and on your own. >> reporter: registration ends at 6:00 this evening. organizers will hold another registration date next friday from 9:00 a.m. until noon. organizers also tell me they need your help. they are looking for donations of canned food and turkeys for thanksgiving meals. mike peloton, kron 4 news.

3919. and the s&p rose 23 points to 1770. that's just one point below the all-time high that it set back on october 29th. and good news for the economy today. 204,000 jobs were added last month. so who is hiring? what does it all mean for the economy going forward? here's more from the new york stock exchange. >> reporter: the latest jobs report from the government shows 204,000 positions were added in october, a month plagued by a shutdown in washington and fears about the debt ceiling. because of those issues, wall street expected only 120,000 jobs to be added. but that didn't happen. october was actually the third best month for job gains this year. and it's better than the average. over the past 12 months, employers have been boosting payrolls by an average of 194,000. there were big gains in leisure

and hospitality, mostly due to restaurants hiring for the busy holiday season. we saw a similar boost among retailers, but it's not all seasonal work. manufacturing continues to be a solid part of the economy, hiring 19,000 last month. still, things aren't back to normal. we haven't gained back all the jobs we lost in the recession. now, unemployment rate rose to 7.3% from 7.2%. analysts say it's a temporary blip because of the shutdown, but either way, it's still a long way from normal, which is about 5%. plus, a lot of people are still discouraged that aren't even looking for work. a new list is out about the jobs which have had the largest pay raises over the past 30 years. the list is based on a cnn analysis of numbers from the bureau of labor statistics on 45 professions. many of the professions with some of the largest jumps in pay are in the medical field, including doctors, pharmacists

and registered nurses. median wage for a doctor back in 1983 was about $26,000. other professions with some of the biggest jumps in pay include lawyers and members of the clergy. it is the second day on the new york stock exchange for twitter. today, the stock closed down just over $3, to $41.65 a share, still up from the initial price of $26 a share. we talked to an expert about what could be ahead. >> twitter is now a publicly traded company. yesterday's ipo was a big success for them, but that was opening day. so what can we expect for their stock next couple weeks and months? how will twitter change its users now they are a publicly traded company? i came to ask an expert these questions. >> there's a lot of hype around this ipo. everybody is writing about it. so many reports all over the

internet. i think in the next couple of weeks, we're going to see kind of maybe a little bit of a rise in the stock price throughout the day, but it's not going to be such a huge pop as we saw today. >> kristine fafarr writes for venture beat. i asked her if it will change twitter as users know it. >> lot more ads. possibly in-your-face ads, on web and mobile. that's going to change a little bit. twitter's going to start talking about how do they reach profitability, because that's when they justify the huge valuation they got, a lot through hype. but it is going to be problematic if they try to reach into new markets where, for example, the tween market, that very young demographic. they love snap chat, and this is not a platform that uses ads. it's something that's easy to spread, it's viral, and it's a great consumer experience, even though some of us might have qualms with it, myself

we are keeping those clear skies over the bay area right now. it's going to stay that way tonight. storm tracker remains to the north of us. it's going to stay that way the next couple of days, but changes into next week. tonight, minimal fog. we'll see temperatures mainly in the 40s. for tomorrow, mostly sunny, similar to today. looking ahead, chance of rain back in the forecast, mainly for the north bay early next week. fog near the coastline overnight, also a couple of patches near fairfield, through the livermore valley, through the south bay as well. you can see fog better in the 8:00 hour, fairfield, livermore, through the delta. that's going to clear pretty quickly. we did see a patch of fog for the east bayshore line this morning. but the fog is not going to be extensive tomorrow. mainly clear skies into the afternoon, similar to today. upper 60s, low 70s in the south bay. low 70s also for inland valley. 73 in pleasanton and livermore.
