the phillipines people. barbara hale released the following statement on sunday "my thoughts and prayers are with all those affected in the philippines by typhoon haiyan and those unmy congressional districts that have loved ones there." bay area people are showing support for those that have lost everything in this natural disaster. a local nonprofit held a relief drive in san juno where people dropped off food and supplies. unfour hours, they filled 47 boxes and collected $1600 in moneyary donations. >> everyone has been affected one way or another. it is heavy on the heart but we want to send a message of our

thefts in san la asanddro. two dozen cars have been stolen. police are alerting the public in hopes of slowing the thieves down. >> reporter: from parking lots on a curb or in front of businesses and homes. sanleeanddro police chief says thieves are stealing cars lately and the locations are random. >> we think it is multiple groups. >> reporter: car thefts are down but lieutenant brant says in the last 7 days 21 cars stolen. the holidays coming and crime is going up. and the most popular model cars that thieves are targeted are honda civics and accords. >> based on someone knowing that, what they can do if they

park two cars outside they might want to move them inside. >> lieutenant brant says 7 arrests have been made in connection with the thefts. most of the recorded cases remain unsolved. >> we run a license plate reader in hopes to solve these cases. police are offering simple tips to keep in mind while parking your car. if possible, park in busy areas and well lit. carry your registration card with you. don't leave them in the glove compartment and carry your garage opener. thieves will steal your personal information and your garage door opener to try to

that gets a lot of attention. a kidnapper has been shot and killed by a heroic louisiana man looking for his abducted cousin. the man whose name is being withheld heard screams from an abandoned home so he kicked in the back door. that's when he saw the kidnapper start to stab his cousin who is this lady, 29- year-old bethany arsono, he then opened fire but wasn't sure if he hit the kidnapper inside the house. when authorities arrived, they did find the body of scott thomas inside the home. he has a child with arsono. there had been previous restraining order violations. they were there to project her.

she was badly injured in this. she is being treated for stab wounds but is expected to recover and this is a photograph of her being helped to awaiting suv that took her to the hospital. a lot of attention on our web site pertaining to this story. new york police plan to charge a 16-year-old boy as adult in a skating rink shooting that left two people dead. the shooting happened saturday night at bryant park in manhattan and police say a 16- year-old boy opened fire after a 14-year-old boy refused to give up his coat. the victim was shot in the back and a bystander was hit in the leg. in world news, after days of negotiation, diplomats failed to reach a deal to put an end to the nuclear program in iran. there were negotiation taking place with the leaders.

it would ease economic sanctions on iran but now that there is no deal, republican senator lindsey graham plans to push for more sanctions against iran. this outcome would mean to stop enriching the subterfuges and if you want a peaceful nuclear program in iran, let the international community control the fuel cycle where the iranian program looks like mexico and canada, not north korea and turn in highly enrich the uranium to ational communit >> they will push for new sanctions on iran as early as this week. the socia olympic torch is back on earth after a short missile to space.

three astronauts landed today. that unlit torch was brought up to the space station last thursday along with three new crew members, two russia crew members took that on a space walk this saturday. that torch has been where very few people have been found. bahama police have four bodies in an airplane crash off of grand bahama island. it happened minutes after take off. the pilot radioed that the plane was experiencing problems. they believe that the victims were on a sightseeing tour. time is 4: 20 on your monday on your veteran's day day. how is the weather? erica has more. >> a lot of folks are probably off for today. waking up to some low clouds and temperatures mainly in the 40s to low 50s. as we head in the afternoon, we

will see high clouds and a little bit of sunshine and temperatures in the upper 50s along the coast to the low 70s. bringing down your afternoon highs for today. it will be a pretty mild day in the south bay, the high today is 78 and 78 in santa clara. in the east bay, a few 70s sprinkled throughout here. fairfield reaching 71. mostly sunny skies. walnut creek a high of 70. expect more cloud cover for places like san francisco, san mateo. temperatures there in the low 60s, upper 60s for oakland. satellite and radar show the low clouds over the bay area and we have a very weak storm system that is actually starting to dissipate. we are talking 10% chance for showers to tomorrow. that doesn't look too likely, a lot of the model the backing off. warmer weather by midweek and temperatures will start to cool as we traps situation into next week. 4: 21 on the clock right now.

we have word of a major accident eastbound 80 right at seventh street. only one car involved. however, chp has made mention that there was possibly a driver throwing out beer cans over the overpass and there is an injured passenger. that's the concern at this point. also of concern, the stop sign 101 to eastbound connector ramp will be shut down, chp has issued a special alert for the accident. it is impacting traffic on 101, they are hoping to have the roadway cleared shortly. >> at the san mateo bridge we are in great shape. over at the golden gate bridge a similar story where traffic is moving well northbound and southbound. although today is veteran's day, the parade in san francisco went down market

street on sunday. there were marching bands and flags. and even a full sized helicopter was driven pass the spectators, the event marks 60 years after the war. it is breathtaking. we can't give back what they have lost, time away from family but we can darn sure give them their respect. this was the city's 9 4th annual parade honoring our veterans. the very first san francisco national veteran's day run took place sunday afternoon. it started at the golden gate recreation area. people chose their support by running a 5k or one mile walk just being there to cheer others on. all of the proceeds went to the honors foundation and it provides scholarships and

assistance to spouses of veterans that have lost their lives giving service to our country. at the end was a special proposal, take a look. >> congratulations, virgil and crystal on your engagement. well, many bay area businesses are offering free food and deals to honor those that serve this country. all of it today, krispy kreme and starbucks are offering items to veterans and free hair cut at sports clip for active personnel and veterans. spargo is donating thousands of items. funds will go towards helping

we are back, it is 4: 26. you see them on the sidelines of most games, cheerleaders, become an iconic part of nfl sundays but behind the glamor there is grueling hours and hard work and critics argue very little pay. shannon travis has the story.

>> reporter: the sunshines on fedexfield, a line of women that stretch and prep. then in a flash, they explode with energy. game day for the redskins. it is also 35 cheerleaders out here practicing their pregame routine. they have special routines for game day and it could be a long day, about 12 hours. >> free travel and exotic getaways and supporting troops and building lasting friendship but the cheerleaders also face challenges like juggling long hours and rehearsals with full- time jobs, school or family. >> to be able to maintain a personal life along with this, you have to be really strong willed and have a strong support system outside of this. >> and there are misconceptions. >> i think people take it in a

negative light sometimes with the uniforms we wear and the makeup we wear. >> we have had women out here lawyers and doctors. >> some critics focus on the pay. >> they are making a very low amount of money. >> amanda reported in an article. >> i thunk this idea drilled in the audition process and when the women make the squad that they are lucky. >> 22 of 36 teams have cheerleaders. some declined to disclose details and some list numbers on the web site. san diego cheer lead es, $75 and two tickets per home game compensation for some appearances. dallas cheerleaders 150 per game with some paid appearances and washington, 75 per home game and game tickets.

there was toxic smoke sent in the air. >> reporter: the fire is still going strong. let's go to our mass cam to give you a review of what is going on. dealing with hot spots. the fire started at 1:20 yesterday afternoon, the fire department expects to be here for at least another couple of hours. this is a recycling plant and you have probably seen it many times, they bring automobiles on the back of flatbed trucks to this location to get it crushed. it was during that process while it was getting crushed that is when they believe the fire started. we talked to the redwood city fire chief and here is what he has to say about the possible cause. >> a lot of times what we have is these cars that it is generally the cars out here that they have crushed that they are recycling and they are required to have all of the materials removed from the

vehicles but they can't catch everything and a lot of times it takes something small that is not seen in the garbage that gets compacted. that's why it is so hard, we are talking about the plastic, the metal does not catch on fire but some of the other things that were not completely removed and that is why the fire started. the air quality not so bad and i am sensitive to that because i have breathing problems but nowhere along the way was it so bad that peopled that to go to the hospital. still after the fire started they issued a shelter in place and that should be lifted in the next couple of hours as far as the volume of calls because the respiratory problems, the number went up. pretty much the norm. we are tracking your forecast on this veteran's day.

here is erica, good morning. >> good morning, we are waking up to areas of low fog. we are mainly in the 40s and 50s. not too cold, not in the 30s. but san francisco, you are waking up to 55 degrees. 52 in san jose. visibility is down to .3 of a mile for napa and three miles near arvarda. across the bridge, clear conditions, down towards hayward, a little bit foggy along the freeways. we will start to clear up as we progress in the afternoon, we will see high clouds inside the bay along the coastline later today. it looks like temperatures will mainly be in the 60s. focusing on the highs, i don't think the graphic is working but we will see 60s and a few upper 50s for daly city and pacifica and temperatures in the 70s in pleasantton and for

liver livermore. your seven-day forecast, temperatures warming up. we do have a 10% for rain for tomorrow. doesn't look too likely as the models are starting to back up. expect cooler weather in the weekend. saturday and sunday and upper 60s for even the warmest inland spots. time right now is 4: 36. on to traffic with dan. we had that accident on seventh street, chp has completely cleared that wreck. it was impacting traffic on the eastbound 80 and that is a thing of the pass. no delays moving out of san francisco. moving around the east bay, problem free at this point, westbound 580 looking good. we are also in good shape southbound. 880 around highway 82. as we push towards the south bay, you can see we are in the green and no delays on 101, 287, you name it they are in good shape and morin good shape

come right back. >> holiday shopping season approaching quickly. while you are enjoying a thanksgiving meal target employees will be on the job. they will stay open until 11:00 p.m. on friday and will be opened on thanksgiving day and this is because of shopping and sent taments with shoppers. u.s. gas prices continue to fall dropping 15 cents a gallon making it an early gift. the price now is 3.20 cents a gallon and we spoke to cynthia harris and she explains the reason behind the falling prices. >> we have seen a steady trend downwards in the past couple of months. there is several reasons, we are in the winter blend so all gas stations are required to be selling the winter blend gas

which is cheaper than summer blends. secondly, there is a huge surplus and there is a lack of demand right now. so all of these aspects have combined a situation that have been ideal for consumers, we have been lucky since summer and have not seen tremendous spikes in gas prices. according to experts, gas priceless go down through the holiday season and possibly start spiking up in january. well, here is a look at bay area prices for gas and you can see in south bay, we are looking at about $3.60 a gallon and oakland, 3.63 and entrance still the priciest of them all but not bad considering where we were. it is 4: 43, we will take another break and be back with more news in a minute including a complete check of weather and traffic. here is a look outside from our roof camera across downtown san francisco, erica will have the

least another couple of hours. there's still a shelter in place for people that live in the vicinity specifically redwood city. here is video that we got when the fire started. around 1:20 sunday afternoon. 15-and-a-half hours later. it is still getting the fire department all kinds of problems. this is a recycling facility. so what they do is bring in cars. they get them crushed. but before they do that, they try to removal of the materials and in this case they were not able to do that and the cause of the fire is under investigation, we talk to the redwood city fire chief and here is his speculation on what might have caused the fire. >> a lot of times we have cars that it is generally mostly the cars out here that they have crushed that they are recycling and they are required to have all of the materials removed from the vehicles but they can't catch everything and a lot of times it takes something

newsroom, new video and information coming out from friday's devastating typhoon that came through the area. we are talking about typhoon haiyan. and that is affecting two million people in 41 provinces, the u.s. military is flying in supplies. at this point the relief is not enough. the storm dying out and raining itself out over main lane china, the date toll at 950. but as they search through the rubble, the fear is the death toll could climb to over ten thousand. bay area residents are showing a big pouring of support for those that lost everything in this disaster. a local nonprofit tells a relief drive in san bruno yesterday where people dropped off nonperishable items like cereal and toothbrushes and other things. they filled 47 boxes and collected $1600 in crash to be turned over to the red cross, many that gave that have family

web site. wild cat haven is a permanent home for more than sixty cats including cougars, bobcats and tigers and the facility is not open to the public. i have an update on the government sequester, the spending cuts that kicked in. as bad as the sequester was, a warning that it will get worse with steeper cuts january 1st. with this year's sequester, agencies found extra money they had opponent hand to help them through the all cuts, the pentagon used more than five billion dollars in unspent money from previous years. furloughs for 11 days were cut back to six and the justice department found five million dollars that allowed them and agencies like the f.b.i. to avoid furloughs all together. without the rainy day funds next year and with the next
