sirens >> reporter: that was one of a dozen, mostly minor crashes and spinouts on highway 17 as the chp responded to one mishap after another all day long. >> reporter:and that was the sound of a car that spun out and nearly slammed into a firetruck at the scene of an earlier crash, earning the driver a warning from the chp. traffic was snarled of and on for hours. >> reporter:back at the scene of the major injury crash, crews toiled in the heavy rain to pull that car from the ravine as the rain and excessive speed are suspected as the cause of this and the other mishaps. in the santa cruz mountains rob fladeboe kron 4 news

101, here is the scene from earlier this morning just before 6:00 a garbage truck parked toward making his first stop for the day. the slick roads caused the truck to slide back down the hill crossing the side and on to the freeway. that was all before 6:00 this morning when you have a lot of traffic on southbound 101. there was no injuries. lucky that this accident was not much worse. >> reporter: can you describe what the conditions were like at 550 on the

indefinitely by the dolphins earlier this month over accusations he bullied and used racially charged terms against fellow lineman jonathan martin. >> reporter:the up-and- coming florida congressman in trouble for cocaine possession says he wants to keep serving his country. >> catherine: but he's also going to be serving a year's probation - after pleading guilty to the charge today. >> catherine: one year after being elected to congress, trey radel was in front of a judge, pleading guilty to misdemeanor cocaine possession. a d-c superior judge sentenced the freshman congressman to a year of probation for buying a small amount of cocaine from an undercover officer last month. >> catherine: in court, radel told the judge, "i've hit a bottom where i realize i need help," and "i want to come out of this stronger." >> catherine: radel says he'll enter an inpatient drug program in naples, florida. the district he represents. >>"he's destroying his own family. so if he's destroying his own family, what's he care about us? the people he's supposed to be representing?"

>> pam: this morning storm caused a tree to come crashing down causing a major mess for those parked in that area. clean up crews were in the area cleaning up the debris and chopping down what remained of the tree that area was all clear by this afternoon. >> reporter: you can see just how empty the school is. teachers were normally in school except they were in class with a sign held stating no school to to electricity. >> when i got here there was one other teacher and the staff lot and it was pitch black and she let me know that we bart waiting to receive the other word.

>> pam: four people were trapped in a car uc it here that landed upside down at the bottom of a 80 ft. ravine. firefighters battled heavy rain and mud pulling them to safety. >> for unknown conditions they lost control. the firefighters tried to go down to the ravine and excavate them out of the build of the vehicle separate it was ill labor intensive. one by one all four of those people were all to save the what two of them trapped in the car was serious injuries.
