thursday, thanksgiving thursday, many though ditching the turkey and instead lining up for black friday deals this year. we're going to take a look at how people are celebrating thanksgiving and celebrating black friday too. well let's first get things started by getting the forecast for your holiday. let's find out about that with erica. good morning erica. >> good morning, james, as we take a live look outside waking up to cloudy conditions, it's a little cloudy out there, temperatures in the 30s, 40s and even some 50s, now into the afternoon we'll see a remainder of some cloud cover scattered clouds, sunshine will prevail and into the afternoon, temperatures will range from the low 60s along the coast to the mid 60s inland, so we do have changes to break down in todays forecast but we're no longer talking about the possibility of rain. of a closer look at your holiday forecast coming up in 15 minutes . good morning, george. >> morning erica. as we are monitoring light traffic as you'd expect all the way around the bay area, no delays, problems or hotspots.
6:01 am
take a look at the bay bridge, this is indicative of what you'll find all around. light traffic, north bay, south bay, eastbay peninsula, not even any slowing on 580 or highway 4. jim? >> george, thank you. now on to the latest out of san jose. breaking news here, police are investigating a shooting, kron4 will tran has the latest. >> reporter: as you can see behind me, san jose police officers are still on the scene. they got the phone call at around 4:00 this morning after hearing that shots were fired on the 800 block of state street, that involved a man and a woman who were sitting on their front porch. they believe multiple shots were fired, the two victims described to be in their 20s, they don't know the relationship at this time, whether it's family members or husband and wife. now, i've got a chance to talk to the lieutenant on the scene. here is what he had to say about the shooting. >> he said it was random and unusual for somebody to get shot on their front porch randomly. >> well let's say this. i mean it's very early in the
6:02 am
morning, it's 4:00, these individuals obviously are celebrating thanksgiving a little early. they are out on their porch. based on the information that i have, it doesn't appear that the victims and the suspects knew each other. >> at this point there's not a lot of description on the suspects. they believe one person took off by car, another on foot. and that's the very latest, on the scene and i'll have updates throughout the morning. for now reporting from san jose, will tran, kron4 news. san jose state university taking some heat for the way its been dealing with the alleged forment of a black student earlier this month, but an in depth study shows students of color have actually dealt with similar incidents from professors and coaches and other students for many years. kron4 reports. >> reporter: it took six years of interviewing and research to complete this hundred page report about racism on the san jose state university campus. now what's inside are comments
6:03 am
from students and faculty about their experiences and suggestions on how the school can address those issues. >> having a zero tolerance policy for anything that symbolize an attack on the ethnic group, gender group, or sexuality things like that, this is bigger than just a black issue. >> word that a black student was being terrorized for three months and him finally reporting it to authorities last week sparked protest on campus. >> they wrote the n word on a dry erase board. also swastika's everywhere, put the bike lock around his neck. he fought them off the first time and sustained bruising but the second time, i guess they were able to get it around him. they locked him inside of his dorm room and they broke the lock off the door when they did that. >> the protest was in part expressing their feeling that for too long, their voices were ignored. the campus climate report was completed two years ago and the school disbanded the committee
6:04 am
last year, this fall the commission on diversity was reindicated. a rep says they believe it now represents more ethnic groups across-the-board. that committee has already met once and will meet again next month, now a rep from the school tells us there are numerous ongoing efforts to address the issues at hand. we're told there are also two task forces targeting african american and latino student success. reporting in san jose, kron4 news. >> well that teenager set ablaze on board on ac transit bus is finally home with family in time for the holidays. we actually have video from oakland of sasha returning home, he's in the passenger seat there coming home from the hospital. sasha just finished a three week stay in the burn unit at san francisco st. francis memorial hospital. it was earlier this month he suffered serious burns when a 16 year old passenger on that same bus set sasha's skirt on fire. now sasha doesn't identify as male or female and yesterday
6:05 am
his parents talked about their sons happiness with being home. >> sasha told us exactly which skirt he wanted to wear on the way home and i don't think that changes anything about the way sasha's going to express himself. >> everything is great. we're just hoping that something goodwill come out of this, that this kind of intolerance will be people will realize that you can wear unusual clothing and it doesn't mean that you have a right to attack them. >> sasha's alleged attacker is 16 years old, an oakland high school student being charged as an adult. well todays the annual thanksgiving day meal at glide memorial church and volunteers who spent quite a number of hours getting things together and ready. kron4 is live there at glide memorial with the latest on the preparations and we're what less than an hour away for people showing up for breakfast.
6:06 am
>> reporter: that's right and volunteers are supposed to show up around 6:30 so we'll see a group in 30 minutes just starting to get into the carving stations and prepping for thanksgiving breakfast and that starts at 7:00 this morning, and that will go on until about 8:30 and then you have about a half hour break before 9:00 they start again with thanksgiving dinner which then goes on until about 1:30, but a lot of prepping happens, way before then. these birds were cooked actually days in advance and of course it takes a lot of volunteers to actually put out. they are serving 5,000 people today. that's actually like maybe roughly around 3000 more people that they serve on a daily basis which my mind to begin with, james they serve about 2000 every day but today is 5,000 people, so they do get a really good group or amount of people to volunteer on this day
6:07 am
and it's always really nice to come over here and talk to people and see what gets them out here to help them volunteer, a lot of times it's a big tradition for a lot of families to come out here and spend some time and preparing these foods and then they go home and do their own thanksgiving but it is really actually a pretty fun time but you know, this is their 50th anniversary which i'm just so amazed by that. 50th anniversary serving the community and if you want to help out and volunteer, of course they pretty much have the volunteers they need for today but they need volunteers every day throughout the year and if you can't spend time, you could donate money or toys, that's also something that they need because of christmas coming up, they are really hoping people will keep in mind to be mindful and not give any kind of toy guns and that kind of stuff and it's really for kids 12 and under and if not, this is also a really good
6:08 am
opportunity because of the 50th anniversary, whole foods is donating 5% of their profits on december 4, so if you go shopping at any of the whole foods in san francisco, 5% of whatever they get goes directly to glide and it's really in celebration of their 50th anniversary, 50 years in the community and serving them. >> fantastic, thank you, yeah they do fantastic work there and a lot of folks benefit from that. we'll go back out to live here periodically through the morning. here is another live look this time way out on the east coast. new york, manhattan to be specific where macy's thanksgiving day parade is under way and the big question was were the balloons going to be allowed to fly? well you can see in the shot, yes, they are. although it looks like they are being kept real low to the ground. snap it is doing a low fly by of the crowd. they had some high winds, there was a threat maybe they would have to ground the balloons but they made the call at the very last minute this morning that yes, they are going to let the balloons go up but it looks like they are being kept really
6:09 am
really low. we'll take a quick break, before we go though here is another fun thanksgiving fact for you. a tradition is born, tv dinners, you know they have thanksgiving to thank, back in 1953, someone at swansons missjudged the number of frozen turkeys they would be able to sell that thanksgiving by about 26 tons, so what do you do with all that turkey? well somebody at the company decided why don't we just slice it all up, repackage it, put some trimmings in there and sell it as a frozen dinner, and thus, the tv dinner was born. we'll be right back. 5çwç5ç5ç5ç5ç5ç5ççyçy5ç5çwç5ç5ç5ç

6:17 am
that flood the internet give the bargain battle a black eye. this ugly clash at a los angeles wal-mart two years ago was captured by juan castro. >> all the people just went in there and they just started destroying the boxes. >> all this for marked down xbox games. >> people were fighting trying to get those deals and ladies just started going at it. >> was that moment a turning point for wal-mart? >> certainly. i think we could do a better job atman aging crowds and helping customers get into the store, find the item they're locking for and get out so i think we learned a lot. >> wal-mart says this time, it's a calmer black friday, orderly lines through the store, shoppers will get wrist bands and rain check tickets to ship items that run out, but what won't change are the surprise deals through the store. >> they said 40 seconds and all the people go crazy. >> so wild that this dad brought his kids to wal-mart to
6:18 am
witness the mayhem firsthand. >> that's something about black friday, your integrity? >> these chicago area cousins don't care about the may hem. in fact they thrive on it every year, using shopping apps and meticulous planning to save on toys for their young kids. >> what eight hours of shopping? >> yeah, it was all night. >> eight hours or so. >> seriously. all night. >> and it was worth it. >> uh-huh. >> she spent $960 half of our budget saving $1000 on gifts enough to make her want to dance. >> so yeah, the jig had to happen and i'd do it again if i got a deal like that. >> not a laughing matter to victoria caruso, we've seen enough video of the fighting. and doesn't want any of it, even if it's literally a pillowfight. >> i think they're crazy. to them it's a sport, lacrosse is a sport, black friday is not a sport. >> she shops all online.
6:19 am
sure, she gives up on some of the deals but savors her serenity. >> the savings aren't worth the bail money. >> after capturing the wal-mart wildness, juan castro avoids a retailer on black friday but still can't resist a short outing. >> as you do it make sure maybe some football gear would be good. >> that may be good advice because for shoppers like these, it's game on. >> wow. okay, well a lot of folks are also traveling this holiday. they may be in crowded airports but there's one making the stay a little bit easier. we have minneapolis st. paul international airport now boasting a whole bevy of new restaurants. in fact they may have the best airport food in america. that's their claim. delta hired a company to give concord g a high-tech makeover. they've added 11 new restaurants, with some of the

it is 6:30 here on thanksgiving, black friday shoppers though already in line to get some of those great deals and kron4 jackie sissel is out there where they are already lining up at the best buy and you've been talking to some of them out there. they've been out there how long? >> well the first person in line got out here at 8:30 yesterday. not 8:30 last night, 8:30 yesterday morning. and you can see the line is continuing to grow out here, best buy set up barricades, people are in tents out here, people brought sleeping bags, and this is a tradition for a lot of people. a lot of people do it every year, traditionally they've done it on black friday but because so many retailers are opening their store on thanksgiving day everything got moved up. black friday, james for those
6:31 am
who don't know, traditionally was the day a lot of retailers would say that's the day they went into the black, the day they started to make a profit for the year so it was a huge deal and obviously the retailers thought why not do it a day earlier and this year, there are actually fewer days between thanksgiving and christmas, so a lot of people are lining up to get those doorbuster deals, and it's not just best buy. it's target, it's wal-mart, a lot of retailers are opening up their doors, early this year. now i had a chance to talk to a few people in line. this guy has his nose pressed up against the door. they aren't open until 6:00 sir so you still have a little time to wait but i actually talked to a person this morning that got here last night. him and his daughter decided they were making a day of it and asked them the question, why? >> sure, the, hannah immediately said yeah, let's do it, because we were kicking it

around and i thought well do i want to spend the time out there alone and she goes no, i want to go, so we said okay let's do it and we threw a couple sleeping bags in the truck and some water and food and bundled up and came out, so it's the savings and i'm thinking of the nice tv we're going to have on the wall and it's the adventure also, so it's a win-win. >> and you know, i have to admit, i'll be sensitive here. i always wonder why somebody would give up two or three days to sit here and save some money. it depends on how much you save. he said he would save about $500 but if you do the math you know it's what? 20 plus hours, that's about $25 an hour to sit out here in the
6:33 am
cold on thanksgiving day. not worth it to me but a lot of these people say that this is an adventure. they do it every year. it's tradition to them, they love it. they think it's exciting to be out here doing it. it's kind of like waiting in line for a concert ticket i suppose but it seems like it's getting earlier and earlier every year and james it's cold out here this morning to boot. >> and some of those folks in like the east coast new york were standing out in line they've got snow to deal with. we don't have that but you're right. it is chilly and this is the scene we're seeing all throughout the bay area. it's part of the story now of thanksgiving. thank you, jackie. by the way if you are going to be enjoying a drink or two during the holiday, bay area law enforcement of course is encouraging you to find a designated driver or come up with some sort of alternative plan on how to get around thisweaken. they will be doing random dui checkpoints, sfpd one of the many law enforcement agencies out there. this is their maximum

enforcement period in place between now and new years day so the entire month of december, additional offers on the roads, keeping their eyes out looking for you if driving eradically. alcohol, prescription drugs doesn't matter to them, they will pull you over. >> there's so many other alternatives. you can get a sober driver, designated sober driver to drive. you have bart, you have taxi services. >> across the nation, more than 700 people died in dui related crashes last year so they want to get that number down, even if you're just planning on having one drink police say you need to stay off the road until you are fully sober. it's 6:34. let's find out about your thanksgiving forecast. erica is keeping an eye on that. >> you've got it. happy thanksgiving james. waking up to cloudy conditions and you can see the high clouds in san francisco right now not dealing with any issues related to visibility. as we head into the afternoon expect scattered clouds, partly sunny conditions, but
6:35 am
thanksgiving looking dry. we've taken the possibility for some rain drops ought of the forecast so really, pretty comfortable conditions, just a little cloudy as we head into the evening hours, and by tomorrow, we'll see more in the way of sunshine, it could be a few degrees warmer in the south bay. expect low to mid 60s for the most part, some of us could actually climb in the upper 60s and we'll go on to a similar pattern as we head into the weekend. now big changes into next week as temperatures will dramatically cool. i'll bring up that seven day forecast coming up at 6:45. here is george. >> well as you might expect doing traffic on thanksgiving holiday, it's a pretty easy job because there aren't any problems to alert you to. take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza on the westbound ride, that light traffic is indicative of what you'll find around the bay. your quick commute check shows we don't even see any slowing this morning on highway 4 or interstate 580. james? >> george thank you. on to more news.
