and the top stories we're following this morning, it's small business saturday where shoppers are encouraged to ditch the big box store and support local businesses. we have a live report. at many stores it was a chaotic black friday. we'll show you the crowds fighting to get good deals from all over the country. and we have new details on the 85-year-old palo alto man detained in north korea. merrell new man has been detained. welcome to kron 4. i'm marty gonzales. let's get things started off with a look at the weather.

>> it is a foggy start. this is the view as we approach the bay bridge toll plaza. we are dealing with areas of low visibility right now, so half moon bay just over a quarter of a mile there, same for sfo. we are expecting that fog to mix out later this morning, making way for a lot of sunshine. it is going to be a little warmer than yesterday. we'll break down those temperatures coming up in my full forecast. marty. >> thank you. today you can get some holiday shopping and also support local businesses during small business saturday. kron 4's mike pelton mixing a little business and shopping. >> reporter: good morning, marty. yesterday a lot of the big chain stores cashed in, so today you have small business saturday. here in pleasanton you will find a lot of small businesses. object main street they've even hung a banner reminding residents of the occasion. they're encouraging locals to shop at their local stores

today. this is one of many cities participating. in san francisco former mayor willie brown is kicking off an event there at 10:00 a.m. san jose and morgan hill are two other communities participating in small business saturday. officials here in pleasanton say this day helps boost the local economy and grow a sense of community. i spoke to one resident a short time ago who tells me many of these businesses depend on your dollar. >> it means a lot. it means they're going to have food on their tables and going to be able to get christmas gifts for everybody. i think most of the people that shop down here know everybody, know the owners, know the businesses. so it's -- >> reporter: and just walking through there's a lot to see and do. >> there is a lot to see and do down here. all the time there's people walking up and down the street. >> reporter: now, this is the fourth annual small business saturday. it was created back in 2010 by american express. the goal here, of course, is to

get you out and shopping at the local stores. according to american express just last '84 alone $5.5 billion was spent in stores around the country on small business saturday. and marty here of course the goal is you don't have to go out and buy something big. even if you spend a few dollars at a local coffee shop, one of those owners will tell you those few dollars go a long way. >> they certainly do. i'm wondering if you know what time businesses start opening in downtown pleasanton. >> reporter: one business, dean's cafe, just opened at 6:30. a few of them are just starting to open their doors. >> good deal. developing news for new morning. a new report from north korea that says 85-year-old merrell new man, the palo alto man accused of he is spie espionage has confessed to his crimes and apologized.

there's growing concern that his heart condition may be a problem as he is being detained overseas. alecia reid reports on the apparent apology. >> reporter: in a taped statement, korean war veteran merrell newman apologized for his actions. >> they collected information of the kpa and attacked a communication system and killed three innocent operators, delayed the the munition supply and attacked the kpa0 times in the province. the armed association escaped so i ask my guide to help me to look for their families and relatives. >> reporter: the korean central news agency released a statement. it claims it is from newman. he was escorted off his flight last month after a 0-day tour of north korea. the story claims newman tried searching for spice and

terrorists that conducted espionage against the dprk and that he perpetrated actions in slappedderring the socialist system. >> that is alecia reid reporting. newman's family issued a statement saying they are concerned about his well-being and they're hoping that the dprk will quickly confirmed that he is being looked after and is in good health. they're also hoping that he has received his medication and are hoping it will be possible to resolve this misunderstanding so that newman can quickly rejoin his family. new for you this morning a winter spare the air alert is in effect today. it is the fourth regional wood burning ban this week. on winter spare the air days it is illegal to burn wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuels indoors or outdoors. homes without permanently installed heating are exempt from this babb. get more information by visiting spare the air.org. police are investigating a fatal shooting in an apartment

complex in vallejo. one man was killed in that shooting. happened about 5:00 p.m. friday in the 100 block of carolina street. police at this point have no suspects is in custody at this time. wal-mart shoppers saw a lot of action on friday from the black friday deals inside the store to the anti-wal-mart protests outside the store. five people were arrested at one rally in san leandro on friday. it was all part of a nationwide demonstration against low wages. hundreds of people showed up to protest in san leandro, and some of those demonstrators explained why they're upset with wal-mart. >> well, i've actually been here awhile but me and my coworkers are struggling just to make it, where they can't even really afford to -- some can't even hardly afford to get to work. >> the respect, because i work for wal-mart. i just want them to respect us a little more. >> that they're treating their workers unfairly, they're not paying them enough to be able

to provide for themselves on a daily basis. >> wal-mart is the largest private employer in america, and the government report finds that well mart has the highest number of employees living on welfare. wal-mart's ceo responded to those protesters defending the retail giant and the wages that the company pays. >> we pay in the top half of retail. our industry offers the opportunity for people to enter at really any life stage from 16 all the way to 76 if they would like to, and then they work hard and they can build a career. >> the wal-mart ceo also responded to criticism about the store being open on thanksgiving day saying that wal-mart is a service industry, just like hotels and airlines, shop, the store will be open. he also noted that wal-mart has been open on thanksgiving day since the mid-1980s. many retailers opened on thanksgiving day through black friday, and some analysts say this year may cement the transformation of the start of

the holiday shopping season interest a two-day afair. more than a dozen major retailers stayed open for 24 hours or longer on thanksgiving day through black friday. many shopping centers opened at 9:00 p.m. friday, or thursday, rather. other stores opened at 6:00 a.m. thanksgiving morning, crowds forming early and often over the two days. store sales numbers expected to be released later today. the national retail federation says 140 million people plan to shop during the four-day holiday weekend. still ahead on kron 4 news weekend, now that the turkey day has passed christmas cheer is spreading around the bay area. we'll show you the sites and the lights after the break. lighting ceremony took place at san francisco's union square last night. the 83-foot-tall tree is a gift to the city from macy's. adorned with more than 33,000 twinkling energy efficient led lights and 1100 shining ornaments. large crowds showed up. in the east bay in danville another tree lighting but a little bit more history behind this one. it's the old oak tree on diablo road. the tradition started 37 years ago. there was music to accompany the tree lighting by the danville girls chorus, also the san ramon chorus. fallen officers are being remembered this holiday season in san jose. ornaments with the names of 30 peace officers killed in the line of dirpt placed on a christmas tree tenth downtown plaza at caesar chavez.

the volunteers from the fraternal order of police lodge 52 in san jose decorated the tree. some of the names include sergeant lauren butch baker and detective elizabeth butler who were shot to death in santa cruz back in february. still ahead on kron 4 news weekend, 32 people injured when a helicopter crashes into a pub in scotland. we'll have that story when we come back.

four people died when a small plane crashed in alaska. a spokesperson says the pilot and three passengers were killed in the crash. the relatives of the deceased have been notified. there's no immediate word on the condition of the other passengers, nor the cause of that crash. overseas a helicopter crash in scotland friday night kills one person. officials say the death toll is

expected to rise. the helicopter crashed into a crowded pub in glasgow. 32 people were injured. the crews have been working to rescue a still unknown number of people who are still trapped in the bar. scotland's first minister called at black day for the nation. 7:16 now. we want to talk about the weather forecast for this still holiday weekend. and here to do that is janu. >> good morning to you, marty. we have a beautiful holiday weekend in store. we are, however, waking up to some areas of patchy fog but pretty clear elsewhere. this is the view from our roof cam. you can see a mix of sun and fog but lots of sunshine later. highs 60s and 70s. in fact, a few more 70s than yesterday. so all around a little bit of a warmer weekend in store. tomorrow even further warming, but that's not going to last long. we do have much cooler conditions in store for us as we head into your work week. also, the chance of light rain monday nature into tuesday. let's talk temperatures.

a little bit of a warmer start compared to yesterday. 39 degrees if you're heading out the door in no var rough, 43 degrees in oakland, upper 30s through antioch and livermore. afternoon bringing us a few more 70s than we saw yesterday. 72 degrees expected for the valley. upper 60s for those of you in redwood city and palo alto. into our east bay upper 60s in antioch, 69 the high for those of you in castro valley. low 50s at the coast. a mix of 60s and 70s in the north bay. if you are headed up to wine country, napa topping out at 70 degrees. we do have high pressure in control here keeping things mild, dry for us. we are expecting a few high clouds streaming through today, but we do have a system approaching. that's going to usher in that cooler air by monday. monday night into tuesday we do

have a chance of sprinkles but not expecting too much moisture with this system. it's really a cool-down. by midweek only getting to the low 50s for the warmer spots. temperatures dropping down to he freezing temperatures. you can see some of our overnight lows are going to get to the upper 20s. marty. >> janu, thank you very much. a moment of truth is drawing near for tarreddable care act website. the deadline to get the healthcare.gov working again is today. jill doherty has this update. >> reporter: withering criticism of the initial rollout of healthcare.gov has intensified the pressure on the administration to get this fix right for saturday. the white house hopes it can do that, at least for the vast majority of users. >> and this website is going to get fixed. >> reporter: healthcare.gov opened for business october 1st and it's been a disastrous two months. the site crashed, unable to cope with people trying to sign

up. small businesses still won't be able to use the site for another year. insurance industry insiders tell cnn some customers' personal data is getting mangled or even lost. the white house says the site will be able to handle 5,000 users at one time. but they admit there will be times after saturday when healthcare.gov does not function properly. and they're bracing for another possible huge surgery in volume that could force some people into virtual waiting lines for call-backs. officials say consumers who pick a plan by december 23rd and pay their premiums by december 31st will have coverage effective the 1st of january. >> that was jill doherty reporting. by the end of the day today the white house says the website should be working for most people who are trying to sign up for health insurance. president obama says he will release a new national security strategy next year.

the document will update the strategy the president outlined back in 2010. it will also describe national security priorities for the remainder of his term. that 2010 strategy addressed how the u.s. would strengthen its position as a global leader, also end the war in iraq and defeat the al-qaida terrorist network. the strategy also included achieving economic recovery here at home and abroad as well. nearly two dozen children and parents are being treated for an unknown illness outbreak at a las vegas casino. the kids are members of a youth football team that's in town for a tournament. 13 children and five adults were taken to the hospital where they're being treated for food poisoning. authorities on the scene say they're not sure just yet what made the group ill. >> with flu-like symptoms, we can't tell. we don't know the source. it could be airborne virus, or it could be foodborne. we don't know the answer to

that. >> one organizer said there have been as many as 40 people suffering the symptoms. so you were nevada officials say they are investigating the illness and the rio casino says they're working with officials to figure out the cause. police conclude that gas killed two south bay men in a tahoe donner subdivision home. police say the contractor installed a door in a room where a space heat ser locate. according to investigators when the two men turned on the heat tear house filled with carbon monoxide and killed them. police have declined to reveal the name of the contractor or further details due to the ongoing investigation. a couple in salt lake city facing nightmare situation after shopping on-line during the holidays. they received a hefty fine and a hit on their credit score because they posted a negative review more than three years ago. the review was about clear

gear, a shopping website. the couple received an e-mail stating they would be feigned $3500 if the negative review they posted wasn't taken down. now the company has a collection agency targeting them. >> we were shocked that somebody would actually attempt to do this because that's -- it's ridiculous that anybody would turn around and try to extort us like this. apparently we're not the only people they have done this to. we're just the only ones who are fighting back. >> the company cited a nondisparagement clause. that means the clause prohibited them from taking any action that would impact the company negatively, such as writing a negative review. still ahead on kron 4 news weekend we'll introduce you to one family what went all out this black friday buying gifts

visibility. 40 degrees currently in santa rosa. 50 degrees in free mobt. and upper 30s currently in livermore. now, as we head into the afternoon it is going to be another beautiful day. a few more 70s out there. 70 degrees the high for napa. 70 expected in san jose and sunnyvale. upper 60s for downtown san francisco, mid-60s in antioch this afternoon. as for the evening we are expecting mostly clear condition, mild temperatures. the futurecast for 8:00, you can see pretty much low 50s across the board. so dropping down to 55 in san francisco, 52 in san jose, 53 for livermore. we are going to enjoy the sunny weekend but we have a big cool- down in store. we'll break that down coming up in my full report. marty. >> janu, thank you very much. a new development to tell you about in the bart contract dispute. a report says that bart's two largest unions are planning to file a lawsuit. they believe that management

illegally stripped the family medical act clause from the contract and the unions have reportedly hired an attorney to file suit on tuesday. this appears to be the latest in a series of conflict regarding bart's new labor contract. here's the bart contract timeline. this is according to the union president. the family medical leave clause was tin original contract but then on june 5th the unions proposed to take it off the table in exchange for agreeing for other proposals. that was promptly rejected bey bart. then on july 11th bryant says the lead bart negotiator reviewed and agreed to the family leave accident. it was then format as part of the contract on july 19th. then on august 7th both unions presented written materials which included agreements to the board of inquiry and to bart, none of which were rejected. on halloween the unions again gave written materials to bart documenting all agreements

including the family leave act. bryant says it was not rejected until november 7th when bart managers say they made a mistake by including that clause in the final contract. new this morning, a fair housing investigation reveals discrimination in several mortgage lending institutions. a north bay nonprofit led the investigation and found discrimination at locations in marin, sonoma, and solano counties. it says that better treatment was given to caucasian customers. the nonprofit group plans to file complaints with the government against the lenders. a big record was broken in san rafael this weekend. officer kevin macdougall made his 100th dui arrest. the officer pulled over a vehicle that was headed the wrong way. the driver was taken into custody and backed at marin

county jail. the officer talks about making his 00th dui arrest. >> well, at the beginning of the year i had set a goal to arrest 100 drunk drivers during the year, and we managed to get to that point. of that 100 i think that two of them i took from other officers because they were doing something else. one i believe was at a crash scene where i took the drunk driver, but the other 95, 97 or so, were all traffic stops that i initiated myself. it's good. it's an accomplished goal. so that always feels good. >> officer macdougall is a 35- year veteran with the police department. he has also led the department in dui arrests year after year. macdougall has received awards from mothers against drunk drivers for the last six years. there have been close to 300 arrests to date so far in 2013 in san rafael related to dui.

officer macdougall has made one- third of those arrests, and he says he plans to keep on going. santa clara is offering a special holiday gift but only to those who have outstanding arrest warrants for minor offenses. it's called operation second chance. it gives individuals a chance to stay out of jail during the holidays. those who qualify have to check in with law enforcement and get a new date to appear in court next year. the program began seven years ago. since then 2400 people have taken advantage of getting a second chance. people who are still very much busy working to raise money for victims of the typhoon hyan. in san francisco on friday a group of a half-dozen or so volunteers raised money for victims of the typhoon. the group says they have raised more than $3500 over four different days. the grass roots movement has raised more than $20 0,000 nationwide for the victims. meantime the u.n. is

scheduled to appeal for more aid for philippine victims. the u.n. says it will seek additional money for a 12-month plan to revive areas devastate by that super typhoon that hit the central philippines. the agency says nearly 5600 people were killed during that powerful store. more than 700 are missing. 4 million people have been displaced. the deadline for those who are living in an encampment on east bay shores of albany have now passed. the place is called the albany bulb, and it's been a home to many people without a home for the past several years. kron 4 reports that even though a judge has ordered the residents to have go it does not appear that anyone is leaving. >> reporter: how long have you been here? >> seven years. me and may boyfriend moved here october 31st, 2006 and we've been here for a little bit over seven years now. >> reporter: amber is one of 50 or so people living in a make- shift campsite here on the

albany bulb. a 40-acre piece of land west of the east shore freeway. after recently losing a legal court battle with the city over the right to remain on the property, bulb residents are now bracing for mass evictions at any time. >> i'm not going to let albany kick me out on the streets from where the police had told us it's okay for us to live for seven years. >> we're here to ask the city of albany to help their plans to evict the bulb residents. >> with what's happened with the temporary trail theres they've established so far you can see how their plan of eviction first, then scrambling to provide services second is a huge failure. >> reporter: amber says not only are the trailers not a suitable replacement for living outdoors on the bulb, she says there's also a major problem with the porta-potties. >> this is the bathrooms that all face the drive way. i'm not even sure how you're supposed to get in there.

must get a degree in order to reach this goal. one program helping students is the american council on education's american college application program. it's in 39 states right now. it works with schools to focus one week a year on helping students with their college applications. about half of high school graduates from families earning more than -- or below $18,000 enrolled in college back in 2012 compared to about 80% of those whose families earned above $90,000. well, californians have spoken and toyota remains the most popular new car choice here in the golden state. that's according to the new car dealers association. statistics show the toyota prius hybrid continues to be the best selling new car in california. it sold more than 54,000 cars in the first three-quarters of the year here in the golden state. still ahead on kron 4 news weekend, now that black friday is over, cyber monday is the next chance to grab some deals.

now, that's going stream in some high clouds today but we're really going to get the cool air from the system, not expecting too much moisture, but take a look how it affect our temperatures. by midweek highs not even making it out of the 50s. in fact, low 50s are expected. we have freezing nights in store for us, temperatures could get as low as up ther 20s. if we do get any moisture with this it could be monday nature into tuesday, and also because it is so cold, snow levels could drop down to 2500 feet. marty. >> okay, janu, thank you. early morning shopping on black friday turned to chaos over parts of the country. let's take a look at video from a mall in north philadelphia. a shopper recorded video of the fight and one of the women involved even tried to use a taser. yeah, a stun gun. philadelphia police say they never even heard about that incident. there you can hear the taser going off. and then this one comes from knoxville, tennessee, a wal-

mart in knoxville. the company had a deal on rachael ray cookware, and a lot of women you can see there fighting over the boxes, and in the midst of the fight some of them never even got a set. turning now to puerto rico let's take a look at another incident at a wal-mart, this one in puerto rico where a stampede by thousands of people trying to be the first one into the store to get their hands on an hdtv. and now we'll turn to texas where some shoppers got more than they bargained for. this also at a wal-mart where police started pepper spraying the crowd when shoppers got out of control. wal-mart officials say that a mass of people rushed a pallet full of tablets and headphones just as a black friday sale started at 8:00 p.m. police and store staff tried to control the crowd but a young boy got knocked down in the crush and an officer used pepper spray to try and break things up. wal-mart saying these were

marty. yesterday we had the wildly popular black friday. today is small business saturday. you will be hard-pressed to find a place with more small businesses than right here in pleasanton. but in case residents needed a reminder a banner has been hung. the pleasanton downtown association is asking locals to shop their local stores today. many cities across the bay arpa fourth annual small business saturday. in san francisco, former mayor willie brown is kicking off an event there by shopping at the ferry building around 10:00. san jose and morgan hill are two other communities also participating in small business saturday. officials here in pleasanton say this day helps boost the local economy and grow a sense of community. i spock with a coffee shop manager who tells me they serve up what bigger chains can't. >> instead of just ringing people up and giving them food, you know, we try to make it a

>> thru go. mike pelton, thanks, live in pleasanton. a new report in north korea says 85-year-old merrill newman, accused of espionage, has confessed to alleged crimes and apologized. newman and his wife live at an assisted living facility with there's growing concern that his heart condition may be a problem while he is being detained overseas. kron 4's alecia reid reports on the apparent apology. >> reporter: in a taped statement, korean war veteran merrill newman apologized. >> they collected information of the kpa and killed three innocent operators, delayed the munitions supply using explosives obtained from a mine, and they attacked the kpa and harassing operations of the rear face 10 times in the

province area. an armed association escaped to south korea. so i asked my guide to help me to look for their families and relatives. >> reporter: the korean central news agency released a statement it claims is from newman. he was escorted off his flight last month after a 10-day tour of north korea. the agency claims he tried searching for spies and terrorists and that he perpetrated acts vine fringing upon the dignity and sovereignty of the dprk and slandering its socialist system. >> newman's family issued a statement saying, quote, they are concerned about his well- being and that they're hoping that the dprk will quickly confirm that he is being looked after and is in good health. they are also hoping that he has received his medication. they hope that it's possible that this will be resolved, this misunderstanding will be resolved so that newman can quickly rejoin his family. a winter spare the air alert is in effect for the bay area today. this is the fourth regional

wood burning ban this week. in the winter time, spare the air days makes it illegal to burn wood or manufactured fire logs or actually any other solid fuels indoors or outdoors. homes without permanently installed heating are exempt from the ban. you can get more information by visiting sparetheair.org. new for you this morning, police are investigating a fatal shooting at an apartment complex in vallejo. one person was killed in that shooting. it happened about 5:00 p.m. friday on the 100 block of carolina street. police have no suspects in custody at this time. wal-mart shoppers saw plenty of action friday from the black friday deals inside the store to the anti-wal-mart protests outside the store. five people were arrested at a rally in san leandro friday. this is all part of a nationwide demonstration against low wages. hundreds of people showed up to demonstrate insan leandro. some of those protesters explained why they're upset with wal-mart. >> i've actually been here

about the store being open object thanksgiving day saying that wal-mart is a service industry, just like hotels and airlines, and when customers want to shop, the store will be open. he also noted that wal-mart has been open on thanksgiving day since the mid-1980s. many retailers opened on thanksgiving through black friday. some analysts say this year may actually cement the transformation of the start of the holiday shopping season into a two-day affair. more than a dozen major retailers stayed open for 24 hours or longer on thanksgiving day through black friday. many shopping centers opening at 9:00 p.m. thursday, other stores opening at 6:00 a.m. thanksgiving morning. crowds forming early and often over the two days. store sales numbers expected to be released later today. the national retail federation says 140 million people plan to shop during the four-day holiday weekend. it is 8:08. coming up on kron 4 news weekend now that thanksgiving has passed christmas cheer is spreading around the bay area.

5, 4, 3, 2, 1! >> signs of the season showing up everywhere around the bay area. the 24th annual christmas tree lighting ceremony taking place in union square last night. the 83-fat-tall tree is a gift to san francisco from macy's. it's adorned with more than 33,000 twinkling energy efficient led lights along with 1100 shining ornaments. a large crowd showed up for that event. to the east bay in danville, another tree lighting, but this tree has a bit more history behind it. this is the old oak tree on diablo road in danville. the holiday lighting tradition started 37 years ago here in danville for this tree. there was music by the danville girls chorus, also the san ramon valley high school

four people died when a small plane crashed in southwestern alaska friday. an alaska trooper says the pilot and three passengers were killed in the crash. the relatives of the deceased have been notified. no immediate word yet, however, on the condition of the other passengers, nor the cause of that crash. a helicopter crash in

people are still working to raise money for victims of typhoon hyayan. the group says they've raised more than $3500. across the country the movement has raised more than $20,000 for the typhoon victims. meantime the united nations is set to appeal for more aid for the victims of the philippines typhoon. the u.n. says it will seek additional money for a 12-month plan to revive the area. government disaster agency says more than 5600 people were killed during that powerful storm. 4 million people have been displaced. new this morning a fair housing investigation reveals discrimination in several mortgage lending institutions. a north bay nonprofit led the investigation and found discrimination at locations in

mar rain, sonoma and solano counties. it says that better loans or more favorable treatment was given to caucasian customers in comparison to latino and african americans. the nonprofit group plans to file complaints with the government against those lenders. a san rafael police officer is being recognized for making the streets safer. on thanksgiving morning officer kevin macdougall made his 10th dui arrest. he pulled over a vehicle that ran a red light and was headed in the wrong direction. the driver was taken into custody and booked at that time marin county jail. officer macdougall talks about making his 00th dui arrest this year. >> at the beginning of the year i had set a goal to arrest 00 drunk drivers during the year. we managed to get to that point the other night. of that 100 i think that two of them i took from other officers because they were doing something else. one, i believe, was at a crash scene where i took the drunk

driver, but the other 95, 97 or so were all traffic stops that i initiated myself. it's good. it's an accomplished goal, so that always feels good. >> officer macdougall is a 35- year veteran with the police department. he has led the department in dui arrests year after year. he has also received awards from mothers against drunk driving for the last six years for his dui enforcement efforts. there have also been close to 300 arrests to date in203 in san rafael related to dui. officer macdougall has made one- third of those arrests andy says he plans to keep on going. santa clara law enforcement is offering a special holiday gift but only for those what have outstanding arrest warrants for minor offenses. it's called operation second chance. it gives people a chance to stay out of jail during the holidays. those who qualify to have check in with law enforcement and get a new date in which to appear in court next year.

since that program began seven years ago, 2400 people have taken advantage of being given a second chance. well, the deadline for people who are living on an encampment on the east bay shores of albany to move has now passed. the place is called the albany bulb. it's been home to people without a home for many years. kron 4 reports that even though a judge has ordered the residents that they have to go it doesn't appear that anyone is leaving. >> how long have you been here? >> been here for seven years. me and may boyfriend moved here october 31st, 2006 and we've been here for a little bit over seven years now. >> reporter: amber is one of 5 or so people living in a make- shift campsite here on the albany bulb. a 40-acre piece of land west of the east shore freeway. after recently losing a legal court battle with the city over the right to remain on the property, bulb residents are now bracing for mass evictions at any time. >> i'm not going to let albany kick me out onto the streets from where the police had told

by 2020 president obama wants america to again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world. the president says more low- income and first-generation students must get a degree in order to reach this goal. one program is helping students, the american council of education's american college application campaign. it's in 39 states right now, and they have to work for one

week a year to help students with applications. about half of high school graduates from families making below $18,000 enrolled incollege in 2012. compared to about 80% of those what earned more than $90,000. californian have spoken. toyota remains the most popular new car choice in the state of california over the last nine months. that's according to the california new car dealers association. statistics show the toyota prius hybrid continues to be the best selling new car in california. it sold more than 54,000 cars in the first three-quarters of the year. the supreme court justices will be hearing a case of a frequent flyer who was kicked out of the program for being a frequent complainer. the case will test consumer rights versus corporate rights. the rabbi says the airline told him that he complained too much and abused his privileges.

one rally in san leandro on friday, all part of a nationwide demonstration against low wages. hundreds of people showed up at the protest in san leandro, and some of the demonstrators explained why they are upset with wal-mart. >> well, i've been here awhile but seeing my co-workers struggling just to make it where they can't even really afford to even get to work. >> it's the respect because i work at wal-mart. i just want them to respect us a little more. >> they are treating their workers unfairly, not paying them enough to provide for themselves on a daily basis. >> wal-mart is the largest private employer in america. a government report finds that wal-mart has the highest number of employees living on welfare. well mart ceo responded to the protesters, defending the retail giant and the wages that the company pays. >> we pay in the top half of

signs of the season are showing up everywhere. the 24th annual christmas tree lighting ceremony took place in san francisco's union square last night. it's an 80-foot tall tree, 83- foot tall tree a gift to the city from macy's. it's adorned with more than 33,000 twinkling energy efficient led lights and 1100 shining ornaments and as you can see large crowds showing up for that big event. to the eastbay now, in danville for another tree lighting ceremony but this tree has a bit more history behind it. it's the old oak tree on diablo

get fixed. >> healthcare.gov opened for business october 1 and its been a disastrous two months. the site crashed, unable to cope with people trying to sign up. small businesses still won't be able to use the site for another year. insurance industry insiders tell cnn some customers personal data is getting mangled or even lost. the white house says the site will be able to handle 50,000 users at one-time, but they admit there will be times after saturday when healthcare.gov does not function properly and they are bracing for another huge surge in volume that could force people into virtual waiting lines for call backs. officials say consumers who pick a plan by december 23rd and pay their premiums by december 31 will have coverage effective the first of january. >> so by the end of the day, the white house says that the

website should be working for most people who are trying to sign up for health insurance. president obama says he's going to release a new national security strategy next year. that document will update the strategy he outlined in 2010. it will also describe national security priorities for the remainder of this term. that 2010 strategy addressed how the u.s. would strengthen its position as a global leader and the war in iraq and defeat the al qaeda terrorists network. this new plan also includes achieving economic recovery at home and abroad. nearly two dozen children and parents are being treated for an unknown illness outbreak at a las vegas casino. the kids are members of a youth football team in town for a tournament. the 13 children and five adults were taken to the hospital where they're being treated for food poisoning, but authorities say that on the scene, say they aren't yet sure what made the group ill. >> with flu-like symptoms we can't tell. we don't know that right now, we don't know the source.

it could be airborne virus or it could be food born. we don't know the answer to that. >> one organizer says there have been maybe have been as many as 40 people who were suffering all from the same symptoms, southern nevada health officials say they are investigating and the rio casino says they are working with officials to try and figure out the cause. police are concluding that gas killed two south bay men in a tahoe diner subdivision home. police say that a contractor without a building permit or approved plans installed a door in a room where the space heater is located. according to investigators when the two men turned on the heater the house filled with carbon monoxide and killed them. this happened back on october 26th. police declined to reveal the name of the contractor or further details due to the ongoing investigation. a couple in salt lake city is facing a nightmare situation after shopping online during the holidays. they received a hefty fine and hit on their credit score because they posted a negative review more than three years

ago. the review was about clear gear, a shopping website. the couple says their order never arrived in the mail and they couldn't reach anyone on any of the phone number that were listed online. they received an e-mail stating they would be fined $3500 if that negative review wasn't taken down. and now the company has a collection agency targeting the couple. >> we were shocked somebody would actually attempt to do this because it's ridiculous that anybody would turn around and try to ex tort us like this. apparently we're not the only people that they have done this to. we are just the only ones fighting back. >> the company cited a clause in its terms of the use contract. that means the couples acceptance of the sales contract prohibits them from taking any action that negatively impacts the company, such as writing a negative review. so now the couple says they are planning to take their fight to court. the better business bureau also now investigating. welcoming up on kron4 news

group of a half dozen volunteers raising money for the victims of the typhoon. the group members say they've raised more than $3500 on four different days. nationwide, the phillipine grassroots movement raised more than $200,000 for the victims of the typhoon. meantime, the u-n is set to appeal for more aid for the phillipine victims. united nations says it will seek additional money for a 12 month plan to revive areas devastated by the super typhoon that hit the central philippines. the government disaster agency says nearly 5600 people were killed during that powerful storm. more than 1700 remain missing and nearly 4 million people have been displaced. a fair housing investigation reveals discrimination in several mortgage lending institutions. a north bay non-profit lead the investigation and found discrimination at locations in marin, sonoma counties. they say better loans are more favorable treatment was given

to caucasion customers in comparison to latinos and african americans. the non-profit group plans to file complaints with the government against the lenders. a big record was broken in san rafaealmost this week on thanksgiving morning. police officer kevin mcdougal made his 100th dui arrest of 2013. he pulled over a vehicle that had run a red light and was headed in the wrong direction. the driver was taken into custody and booked at the county jail. officer mcdougal talks about 10 the year. >> well at the beginning of the year i'd set a goal to myself to arrest 100 drunk drivers during the year and we managed to get to that point during the night. of that hundai think two of them i took from other officers because they were doing something else, one i believe was at a crash scene where i took the drunk driver, but the other 95, 97 or so were all traffic stops that i initiated

myself. it feels good. it's an accomplished goal so i always feel good. >> the officer is a 35 year veteran with the police department. he's lead the department in dui arrests year after year. mcdougal also received awards from mothers against drunk driving for the past six years for his dui enforcement efforts. there have been close to 300 arrests to date so far this year related to dui's and officer mcdougal made 1/3 of those arrests. santa clara law enforcement is offering a special holiday gift but only for those who have outstanding arrest warrants for minor offences. this programs called operation second chance and it gives individuals a chance to stay out of jail during the holidays. those who qualify have to check in with law enforcement and get a new date to appear in court next year. since that program began seven years ago, 2400 people have taken advantage of having a second chance. well the deadline for those people who are living in en

campment on the eastbay shores of albany to move has passed. the place is called the albany bulb, and its been home to people without a home for the past year. kron4 reports that even though a judge ordered the residents to leave it doesn't appear that anyone is leaving. >> how long have you been here? >> for seven years, me and my boyfriend moved here october 31, 2006 and we've been here for a little bit over seven years now. >> one of 50 or so people living in a makeshift camp site here on the albany bulb, a 40- acre piece of land west of the east shore freeway. after recently losing a legal court battle with the city over the right to remain on the property, bulb residents are now bracing for mass evictions at any time. >> i'm not going to let albany kick me out on to the streets from where the police told us that it's okay for us to live for seven years. >> we're here to ask the city of albany to halt their plans to evict the residents. >> eric of share the bulb.

the country. let's take a look at this mall in north philadelphia, where a shopper recorded video of this fight between two women over presumably a gift. one of the women started to use a taser. you can hear it here in a second. using it on another shopper, philadelphia police say they never even heard about the incident. let's move now to knoxville, tennessee the wal- mart there where the can company had a deal on rachel ray cookware and a lot of women fighting over this deal and some of them left the store empty handed. now we go to puerto rico where another wal-mart store, this is outside the store where a stampede by thousands of people trying to be the first to get their hands-on an hd tv, as they're heading into the store going over the barriers. and then in texas, some more shoppers getting more than they bargained for. this also at a wal-mart where police began spraying pepper spray when a crowd of shoppers
