good morning. at 8:15 as we take a look at the weather, two shots showing us how bad it is on the northeast right now, a second winter storm in six days has now dumped snow from ohio to new england, cancelling flights and also causing a lot of highway accidents in the area. as you can see we have video from times square in new york and also boston. we learned that a foot of snow fell in parts of pennsylvania. forecasters now saying parts of new england could also get 12 inches of snow today. it's probably good news for the kids who are out there getting to sled and make snowballs and not so great for the people who have to shovel it find out more about the weather forecast with erica kato. >> the brunt of this winter storm actually fell yesterday afternoon into the evening. right now most of it is actually moving into parts of canada and over the atlantic but maine forecasted to get 18

inches of snow, the brunt of this system currently impacting vermont, new hampshire and for everyone in maine but looks like most of the winter hazards have been cancelled for the rest of new england. so this is something we will continue to monitor. here's a live look at conditions here in the bay area. this is from our mount cam. we did start the morning off with cold conditions, areas of patchy, dense fog and it's pretty hazy out there. another day of poor air quality. the worst of it in the east bay interior spots in the santa clara valley, so we have another spare the air alert in effect. take a look at temperatures right now. you will notice mainly 30s and 40s, vallejo at the freezing mark, 31 degrees right now in concord and 41 for those of you in oakland. now, as we head into the afternoon, we will continue with a kind of hazy sunshine because we still have that cold air inversion in place. but it will be a warmer day. take a look here, oakland 66, 61 degrees in san mateo, mid- 60s in the south bay and by

later on tonight we will continue with these very long, chilly mornings. however, it's not going to be as bad later on tonight. in fact, by 8:00, hey, oakland still in the 50s and upper 40s for places like san mateo and san francisco. now, your seven-day forecast around the bay forecast highlights tomorrow as the warmest day of the week. we have 70s forecasted in the south bay for the middle of december. so we are dealing with the possibility of record breaking warmth but that's short lived because temperatures will slide as we head into the middle of next week, in fact, we are looking at a 20% chance for showers wednesday night into thursday. >> thank you so much. we are joined this morning by michael yaki, the kron4 political analyst and we just took a little selfie. we have to talk about president obama's selfie because that happened at the mandela memorial service. let's talk about the funeral because that just happened overnight and also this morning finally laid to rest. >> officially 10 days of mourning south africa was in. there's a memorial service and

low 40s leaving the house in redwood city. as we head into the afternoon we will see a hazy sunshine with slightly warmer conditions. temperatures will mostly be in the 60s. take a look, oakland a high of 66, 65 degrees in san jose, fairfield today checking in at 61 and 63 for those of you in santa rosa. now, later on tonight it's not going to get as cold but we are still dealing with those very long nights with very chilly conditions, frigid almost for the morning hours. but you will notice by 8:00 later on today, it looks like upper 40s, low 50s for just about everyone. your seven-day forecast marks tomorrow as the warmest day of the week. in fact, we could see 70s in the south bay so we are discussing the possibility for record breaking warmth. that warming trend however short lived, temperatures will cool, in fact, we are looking at a 20% chance for showers wednesday night into thursday. >> thank you, erica. let's talk now with our political analyst michael yaki. he is here now. we have a couple of topics we
9:17 am
want to go over. let's start with gun control rules, regulations, laws. we just had another school shooting in colorado on friday and saturday we marked the one- year anniversary since newtown. what has happened in the past year? >> well, what's really disturbing is that nothing has happened in congress, certainly. the only thing that has happened and i think they banned plastic guns and that's about it. that's mainly more for tsa purposes going through metal detectors at airports but nationwide one of the most disturbing facts that's come out is there have been about 100 law changes on gun control, about 70 of them loosen gun control restrictions so it seems -- >> across the nation? >> yes. it seems counter intuitive given the tragedies in newtown, you know, wisconsin and certainly the school shootings that we have had, one, two or three in the last month alone. but, you know, it's -- congress is just not going to act. there's not -- >> why not? >> well, i mean, the easy and the short answer is that money talks and the money of the nra
9:18 am
and more importantly all the gun manufacturers makes a big difference right now and you have a congress where you have a lot of districts that are not competitive as long as they keep those people in, they can keep gun control the way it is right now which is basically none. >> do do you think what happened in colorado on friday is going to spark anything like the shooting -- >> no. >> nothing? not going to give us any momentum? >> if newtown couldn't do it, this is a little tiny blip on the radar screen. >> up next is the obamacare website. >> yes. >> what do you mean by yes? >> well, they have so much work they have left to do. you have essentially two weeks left for people to enroll and there are approximately 5 million people short. >> do you think people are procrastinating, it's the holidays, there were problems with the website so people are like i'll let them fix it and now it's becoming we will just do it the last day possible? >> i think the problems with the website had a lot to do with it because if you think
9:19 am
you're going to be spending 20 hours online trying to get through it, i mean, all of us have those moments when we look at our computer and go what the heck are we doing and then we slam it shut and walk away. if you're trying to sign up for something as complicated as health care that's probably doubly so. will the fact that there are penalties attached make people realize maybe i should get it done now? i have a feeling they are going to keep on extending this deadline as even if -- even in the most optimal situation they might be able to get half the people they need in there but if they are not the right half and by that i mean young healthy individuals, people like you who will -- >> you calling me young? >> young and healthy. >> thanks. >> who basically help pay for the health care problems of people like -- not me, older than me, you know, that's important and they haven't been signing up yet and that's the real, i think, fly in the ointment in terms of obamacare right now. >> can anything get done in washington between now and the end of the year or sort of
9:20 am
slowdown, shutdown time. >> right now it's pretty much they have gone home, they did do a small budget agreement, an agreement that was basically designed to say we are not going to shut the government down again, folks and we are going to get through the 2014 elections and then we will shut it down between the 2016 elections. basically the budget agreement through 2015 to make sure it doesn't affect anyone between now and november of next year. >> the shutdown didn't help either side gain any popularity or traction with their constituents. it seemed to have hurt both obama's poll numbers are down and then john boehner came out earlier this week and sort of slammed the tea party. >> right. and john boehner slamming the tea party indicated it hurt the -- when you look at all the polls, the government shutdown hurt the republicans much more, which then begs the question why did the democrats agree to a deal? >> they could have just let the damage continue? >> yeah, towards january and possibly in march and i think the question is -- the question is how do you act as a
9:21 am
responsible legislator every time you do that all you're doing is you're allowing these huge cuts in government to keep on going on, people aren't getting paid, people are being laid off and at the end they made a decision, well, this is better than nothing. on the other hand, part of that better than nothing is the fact that unemployment extensions are out. so i actually got a lot of tweets after my last broadcast about this from people asking what about my unemployment extension, it runs out in february and i had to tell these people the bad news, it runs out in february and that's it. and that's going to be a significant -- >> you don't think they will do something else? >> it does not look like it. at this point it does not look like it. so while the reduction in cuts may put some people back on the payroll, the fact that there's hundreds of thousands of people just in california whose unemployment extension benefits are going to run out and that money is not going to be going into our economy, that's going to have a drag too. >> do you have anything on the list for 2014 that we should be looking out for? >> i think it's going to be how
9:22 am
big an issue obamacare plays in the 2014 midterm elections. basically the budget agreement has set it up for the republicans to make it their standard-bearer, the problems with obamacare, the problems with big government and the democrats are going to have to try and basically turn it around in terms of the problems, haven't been doing the last four years, immigration reform, gun control. it's going to be a big battle. >> we will be watching. you will be here, right? >> i will. >> good. thanks so much, michael. >> thank you. we will be right back. kron4 programming is sponsored by nissan.
