we are starting off with this live look, and so the cam is shaking around and it is gusty in the higher elevations, however, very calm conditions as we head into the afternoon. a cold start in canta rosa at 34 degrees. mid 40s in downtown san francisco. now, as we head into the afternoon, we're looking at the possibility to actually break some records today. we could do that again today with temperatures even warmer. so you could actually see # 0s develop in the south bay. low 60s over in fairfield. mid 60s in san raphael and san francisco checking in with a high of 66. plenty of sunshine to go around and we do have a share the air out there. so in wood burning is allowed. it is going to be so warm? afternoon, it is not going to

feel like the time to sit around the fireplace. now, your seven-day forecast highlights warm weather that is going to stick around and temperatures about 10 degrees warmer for where we should be this time of year. i don't think we'll see any rainfall. we're stale warmer than average. so more details on your forecast coming up in just a couple of minutes. taking a look at traffic around the bay area, i did see a lot of cars on the road earlier this morning. i was actually kind of surprised and you are seeing a good number here at the bay bridge toll plaza as well. we are seeing very light conditions here. the metering lights are off and are probably be off throughout the day. westbound 24, no problems, and it looks like traffic is moving at top speeds approaching the

586-86 interchange. >> thank you. it is christmas morning here in the bay area and here to show us how everybody else is celebrating this holy day around the world. >> reporter: this christmas many people in the philippines are praying for the gift of recovery. people gathered at a church where signs of the typhoon haiyan are still present. the typhoon destroyed well over half a million homes last month and left more than 7,800 people dead or missing. right now four million people are living in shelters and temporary housing facilities are still being built. pope francis celebrated his first christmas eve midnight mass at the vatican. there was the mass of the singing choir. the pope, who became the first south american pope, blessed baby jesus during the mass. in washington a christmas toy give away came to a stoop when man in a santa costume was shot

what pellet gun. >> call 911. >> my back. >> the man was taken to the hospital to get it removed from his shoulder. the police have not found the person who shot him. now for santas having fun. good old st. nick traded out his sleigh and reindeer earlier for more twra divisional method of hawaiian travel. and christmas normally brings to mind the north pole and snow. well, this santa definitely did some skiing, but not downhill. we're talking water skiing. it is part of the annual water skiing event at the national harbor on the potomac river. there was also a water show. >> you can see santa definitely having a lot of fun and today many people are celebrating

with love and reflex including here in the bay area and san francisco. you're looking at lefty oh cool's, the bar at union square, where they collected more than 10,000 toys for children in need. more than half of the toys have already been distributed to kids and neighborhoods throughout san francisco with the help of the city's police and fire departments. the police and firefighters will continue today to distribute the donated toys to children. yao and anyone plans to take a walk on the beach for the holidays should keep an eye on the surf. the seasonal swell is forecast to hit bay area coastlines over the next couple of days, which means an increased threat of rip currents. the national weather service has issued a coastal hazard from sonoma to monterey county which could experience that today through friday afternoon a storm system near alaska is responsible for delivering the

strong weaves. the beach goers are adviced to stay off of rocks near the water and keep a safe distance from the tide. as people take to the roads for christmas, the chp is reminding everyone that they're out in full force looking for any problems, especially drunk drivers. kron 4's charles clifford has more. >> reporter: from 6:00 p.m. tuesday until 11:59 wednesday evening, the california highway patrol will be running its annual christmas maximum enforcement period. the chp says the officer also be looking for unsafe drivers, speeders, impaired drivers and people not wearing their seat belts. the public is also asked to call 911 if they suspect someone may be driving under the influence. chp made more than 1,100 dui arrests across california last year and 39 were killed in highway traffic accidents. more than half weren't wearing

>> welcome back a developing story this morning. a medical court battle continued in end when a second ed call opinion was announced on the 1-year-old. it was another opinion by an independent doctor affirming that she is, in fact, brain cede. her family has been fighting to keep the teen on life support since december 11 when the teen suffered serious complications from a tonsillectomy. and that's when children's hospital in oakland told the family she was dead. >> the medical condition we you mentioned, she meets all of the criteria for brain cede. she has no brain stem and no cerebral function. >> i'm going to have to,

therefore, deny the petition that mr. dolan has filed on your behalf to provide additional medical care and life support. >> the judge did give the family time to file an appeal or move her to another hospital. they'll have until december 30th to make that decision. as you can imagine, it was an emotional afternoon for the family of the teen. her uncle saying though he is devastated to hear the news, he appreciated the compassion that dr. fisher gave to his test. and her grandmother also reminded other parents to never take their children for granted. and for everybody, love your children with all your heart. if you haven't told them today that you love them work home now, call them. call them on the phone and tell them how much they mean to you and how much you love them. >> the life legal defense fund may provide medical and financial assistance to the feel if they decide to move her

welcome back. well, it is not a white christmas here, but in other 35r9s it is. a weekend ice storm has left hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses without power today in maine and michigan. the utility companies are trying to restore electric tries toy to around 500,000 customers throughout the region and also into canada. some families say they'll spend the holiday without heat and others have gone to a hotel. and we are very fortunate and lucky that we have power around here. also,we have our normal of solar heat on this christmas day. here is erica. good morning. >> good morning. we are starting off with this live look from interstate 680.

this is looking at conditions in walnut creek. it was a little breezy overnight especially in the higher elevations. take a look at your temperatures already at the freezing mark. upper 30s. we're seeing low 30s along the east bay shoreline. and so it is a cold start. we haven't even approached your morning lows yet, so the temperature also continue to drop over the next couple of hours. as we head into the afternoon, it is going to be a have nice day. pleasant conditions. we're looking at the possibility of perhaps 70s. getting pretty close to it in campbell. san jose, i think we'll see 70s closer to morgan hill and gilroy. and over in the east bay, mid to upper 60s there. walnut creek at 65 degrees. taking a look at the peninsula, low to mid 60s. 65 degrees in berkeley and upper 60s in napa. temperatures as much as 10 degrees warmer for where we should be this time of year. we do have hazy conditions with

poor air quality, all of the stagnant air sitting over the bay area, so wood burning is prohibited, at least for today. so we will not be gathering around that wood burning log over christmas dinner, but, again, it is going to be so warm out today. i don't think it is necessary. satellite and radar shows the clear conditions over the bay area. so what that is doing is it is keeping the storm track well to our north. we do have rain out there, it is just not hitting the bay area. we will continue with temperatures in the upper 60s for the next couple of days. you'll see that on your seven- day around the bay forecast. it looks like we'll start to cool things down as we head into next week. over in the traffic center, we're taking a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. just a handful of cars making this westbound trip no wait here at the bay gates. the traffic conditions very light coming from all of the approaches now. no problems at the san mateo bridge. the golden gate drive time

running at 23 minutes. as you take it over to our traffic maps, we are tracking one accident out there. this is southbound 101. we do have a car on its side, but it looks like it is sitting off to the shoulder, so it perhaps could be a visual hazard abroaching the airport, but we are seeing green on the roadway sensors so speeds are still above 50 miles per hour. annie? >> thank you, erica. well, sheer live look of the vatican in italy. the pope celebrating his first christmas day in the vatican by attending the christmas day mass. this will be followed we the nativity of the lord where pope francis delivers his to the city and the world blessing from the veteran basilica. [ music ] and last night pope francis celebrated his first christmas eve mass as the lead turnover catholic church. it was packed with the faithful

and also tourists. he spoke of jesus's humble beginning. >> we bless you lord god most high who lowered yourself for our sake. you are immense and you made yourself small. >> the pope this time chose to carry a statue of the baby jesus at one point which is usually done by an aide. he preached the message of love and forgiveness calling on people to love their brothers and sisters. and in bethlehem crowds from around the world gathered for christmas eve celebrations making a pilgrimage to the biblical birthplace of jesus. the tourists visited local restaurants and sugh near shops and also admired a large illuminated christmas tree. there was also a midnight mass in bethlehem. in dallas, texas, many people were upset in the closing hours before christmas they still haven't had their

ups packages delivered a snow storm hasn't helped, but people are still outraged that packages they ordered weeks ago are still in shipping limbo. teresa wood aired explains. >> it is lost in their building somewhere. >> reporter: total frustration. >> it is terribly disappointing because we ordered these things on december 1. >> reporter: packages ordered 23 days ago are in but can't be brought out of play. >> and the people in memphis say they can get them out but the people inside of that building say they can't find them because there are 1,000 packages in pallets and they can't find our packages. >> reporter: that is dallas. fort worth is bumper to bumper with unhappy christmas customers too. >> after waiting for about an hour, and they said it hasn't been processed yet. >> it has been here since the 18th around hasn't been processed. >> i can't tell you how many countless hours we have spent on the phone dealing with this issue with people in memphis, and they're still blaming it ton ice storm which was two and

a half weeks ago. >> reporter: ups does still say the ice storm hit just as the holiday shipping rush did. it created a backlog from which they have yet to recover. >> but they just can't seem to find packages. >> reporter: they brought hundreds of extra hands to the dfw region and it now appears they will even spend christmas here working nonstop hoping that get everything where it belongs by the holidays, but stopping short of a guarantee, which means the customer jeff hayes' advice is good at vice. >> things -- advice. >> thing also work out in the end. it -- things will work out in tend. it is hard if you're trying to do things for people and you keep do it. >> ups postan apology on the web site. ups is not delivering today, but will start operations back up tomorrow. and well, mailing a letter will soon cost you a little more. the price of first-class stamp also go up three cents starting

january 26th. the price of a stamp are now be 49-cents. you can still buy those forever stamps at the lower price until the new rate takes effect. the rate increase is supposedly temporary until the postal service can make autopsy deficit but nobody is holding their breath on that temporary claim. and target says it has learned of incidents of scam e- mails connected with the recent information hack. the company is posting copies of its official communications on its web site. it wants to show customers thousand be sure they're really hearing from target when they get e-mails from the retailer. information connects to about 40 million credit and debit card accounts, it was stolen between november 27th and december 15th. in the bay area, san francisco health officials have issued an alert to people who ate or drank at the come stock saloon in north beach a food handler there has been diagnosed with hepatitis a. and

the grace period ends friday to get health insurance. many consumers are frustrated by attempts to sign up by monday's deadline. insurers need time to review policy applications so coverage can start on january 1. the grace period was announced monday after thousands of people were unable to get coverage because the web site

and call centers were overwhelmed. and a $60 million renovation of the u.s. capitol dome is underway in washington, d.c. the staff folds will encircle the comb starting this spring. they will allow the contractors to strip paint and repair more than 1,000 cracks and broken cast iron pieces. the dome will remain illuminated at night and partly visible through the process. the project will take about two years to complete. the last major renovation was back in 1960. well, meals on wheels helping many low-income seniors around the country as well as their four-legged best friends. the program volunteers noticed a growing number of clients giving their food away oh to their pets so they serviced teams up to offer free pet food to their meal deliveries. volunteers say the seniors are eating better and worrying less about whether their furry friends will get a meal. and southern california

hospitals are spreading holiday cheer for new parents by delivering these newborns in giant christmas stockings. aren't they the cutest? the bright red stockings were provided this week for babies born at long beach memorial medical center. they're the redlands community hospital also has been delivering newborns in stockings also this morning. the press tell gram reports say half century old tradition. so for 50 years they have been doing that. how sweet! coming up on the kron 4 morning news, two popular gaming systems are in short supply this holiday season. we'll tell you why there is such a shortage. and it was a christmas eve miracle as a 3-month-old kitten that went missing was reunited with its owner. we'll have that story coming up.

>> welcome back. it is christmas morning. maybe the kids are up in morning. they're so excited to see what santa left under the tree. >> it looks like santa is going to leave everyone some pretty nice weather as we head into the afternoon. in fact, some of us will be approaching the 70-degree mark. it is a little breezy out there. it is also a cold start to the morning. in fact, some are in the upper 20s. but it is a little milder in san francisco where the temperatures are currently in the 40s, and then by 3:00 this afternoon, we're expecting a hazy sunshine. we do have a spare the air alert in effect. so the temperature also be ranging from the mid 60s to perhaps the low 70s into the south bay. by 8:00 this evening, we're talking a calm night. gather around the dinner table. and the temperatures will be in the upper 40s to mid 50s. so satellite and radar shows the clear conditions over the

bay area right now. we do have high pressure that continues to build in overhead so there are storms out in the pacific. they're just not hitting -- hitting us so the jet stream way above northern california right now. we will continue to see warmer conditions. now, your seven-day around the bay forecast shows upper 60s for today on this christmas wednesday. sunny skies will prevail into tomorrow. it is going to be clear and nice by friday, perhaps a little cooler, and then it looks like we'll tack on cloud cover as we head into the weekend. still talking very warm conditions with temperatures about 10 degrees warmer for where we should be. but it looks like temperatures finally start to trail off into next week. we're still dealing with the driest calendar year on record. it doesn't look like we'll see another rain drop for the rest of 2014. more details on that coming up in 15 minutes. talking traffic on this christmas morning. if you do have somewhere to go, light conditions on all bay

area freeways. we're currently without any hot spots. here is a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. you'll see a few cars coming from interstate 580, but the metering lights are cycled off and they will probably be off for the duration of the day. >> as we take it over to the traffic maps, in my last report i mentioned an accident. it was a car on its side on 10 is at sfo. it looks like there is a little bit of confusion on the actual locations. we have a few callers driving by and they're saying conflicting information, so it actually could be on eastbound 380 so in the vicinity of sfo, we could have an injury accident. it looks our traffic maps we're still seeing greenen the sensors. annie? >> thank you. time is 4:31. here in the bay area, there were still plenty people doing last-minute shopping. probably mostly guys. we asked some of them why they

waited so long. >> it was much easier to come here with all of the suitcases. >> reporter: as far as opses, some people brought whatever they could find in the time they had. >> and trying to figure out what to get because there are so many things out and so many sales that they -- you know, it is just like whatever. >> we looked around. we saw a few things we like and so i guess it was an impulse buy. >> reporter: others knew exactly what they wanted and went looking for it. >> and also we bought a cage. >> i went in there to find some last-minute headphones for my little daughter. her auntie got her some headphones and what not, so we did find them. >> reporter: unfortunately for some shoppers the store they needed closed before they got there. >> yeah, it is closed. 6:00. i don't know. i'm going to wait until i can go, i guess.

>> reporter: it is always the guys waiting until the last minute. good news for some very, very last-minute shoppers. only a small number of stores like cvs, rite aid and walgreen's will be open today for christmas so if you're really desperate, you have a couple of options today. the new x-box and play station gaming systems were in short supply this holiday season. the new consoles went on sale last month. they quickly sold out in a lot of locations leaving last- minute shoppers out f out of luck. a 67-year-old man was beaten and robbed in the casino parking lot. the sheriff's office says the attack left the man with severe head injuries. he told deputies that at least two people were involved and hit him on the head before robbing him. it happened around 6:30 on tuesday morning. the marin county sheriff's office and the casino security teams are investigating. a family who's newly

adopted kitten was stolen now reunited just in time for christmas, and here is the reunion. the family had picked out a 2- month-old out kitty from the san francisco animal shelter and even naming it, but storm was stolen last week. sunday, a hotel manager found storm and brought it back to the shelter. the family is delighted that storm is home just in time for christmas. >> just unbelievable. we wouldn't have thought it happened the and i want to thank everybody here at the staff. they have been absolutely wonderful and everybody who called in tips and the manage here found her and thank you so much. it is just a merry christmas for everybody. >> what a cute kitty. the family thanked the shelter staff by bringing them bags of baked goods to enjoy for the christmas holiday. the car bids has seen a spike in revenue from last year, and kron 4 shows you local dealerships have been feeling the increase. >> reporter: if you're thinking

about buying a car, now might be a good time, and that has car dealerships like walnut creek ford celebrating this new year's. >> we're definitely seeing a pick-up in traffic here. >> reporter: the analysts are expecting new car sales in the u.s. during 2013 to finish around $15.6 million. that's 8% higher than last year. so what exactly is it that is draw sog many more people to the car lot this year as opposed to last? >> i think people were putting off, you know, buying cars for family and kids over the last couple of years, the recession, and people are making big dollar purchases this year. >> reporter: some of the most popular types of automobiles are hybrids and electric cars, and with sales picking up, now could be a good time to get one of those last-minute deals. buff if you do, you might want to hurry because like most sales pitches in the business, these deals won't last forever. >> we have been busy. we have been slammed. this is the first day we'll have off in a while and so we're going to be back at it

thursday morning. it has been super busy. >> reporter: reporting in walnut creek, kron 4 news. a family in san jose got this nasty surprise on christmas eve after a car slammed into their home. check that out. they were literally having an open house. the police say the driver was a teenager who had been speeding and now has minor injuries. they say he had been racing another driver. a neighbor returned to the scene when he heard the commotion. >> the car hit right here. and then i'm trying to pull that out. okay. you don't have any problems. i'm okay. i'm okay. and the ambulance came and i get in the ambulance. >> both drivers have been cited by san jose police. the family who lives in this house is trying to clean up this mess and get things touched up for christmas. and a san francisco man charged with murder in a 201 stabbing has been acquitted of

all charges. the jury found the 47-year-old howard frasier acted in self defense. the jury found that his attacker, the 54-year-old luther robinson iii had previously bullied and threatened him before the fatal stabbing. this is based on six weeks before the confrontation when robinson had chased and assaulted phrase were a club threatening to kill him. frazier testified at trial that he tried to diffuse the situation by talking to robinson's brother to no avail. frasier was stabbed by robinson once with a pocket knife. coming up on the kron 4 morning news on this christmas morning, a look at your headlines and has live look outside of san francisco. a beautiful shot with it lit up on this christmas morning.

imagine spending christmas eve more than 200 miles above earth that was the story for two american astronauts. we report from washington with the details on their successful space walk. >> the best christmas ever, thanks, guys. >> two american astronauts celebrated a christmas eve success after complotting a mission to repolice a malfunctioning pump on the international space station during an emergency space walk tuesday. >> let me know if you need me to walk you through steps. >> it all started two weeks ago when a valve got stuck jeopardizing the space station's cooling system. the pump, which removes heat created by the station's equipment is critical to the space station, so it flies with a back-up. the faulty one was shut down along with station activities. >> and see if you can depress the button then. >> on saturday, rick and mike hopkins took the first space walk of their repair mission lasting more than five hours to remove the defective pump. scary as it seems to the average person, the astronaut

said not to worry. >> and you have a person on the ground actually talking to the astronauts in space, walking through the procedure, and you have the control team on the ground in houston. everyone in the control center, the instructors, the flight controls, everyone, it is a gigantic team to help do this -- the space walk the right way. >> the american space duo plan to continue the work on monday, but there was another problem. this time with his space suit. so nasa pushed the second walk back a day making this only the second christmas eve space walk in history. the first was a multi-day mission in 1999 to repair the hubble space telescope. >> we're well trained and this really is an extraordinary experience for the astronauts to get a chance to do this. >> in washington. and coming up on the kron 4 morning news, we'll tell you how many residents were finally able to go home just in time for christmas after being forced out of their home during

welcome back. just in time for the holidays, all 100 residents forced to evacuate for a wildfire in big sur are now allowed back into their homes. the evacuations and road closures were lifted monday night. 34 homes were destroyed in the fire that is 1 more than they originalliest mated. this fire burned more than 1.4 square miles in the national forest, and that fire even forced the fire chief to evacuate her home as well. it is very dry out there. we need the rain. are we going to get any? here is erica with your holiday forecast. >> reporter: good morning. all of the models originally showed perhaps rain over the

weekend, but they're starting to back off on that, so it really looks like we're going to be dealing with dry conditions for the rest of 2013. temperatures are warmer than where we should be. right now we're on the cold side with mostly 30s and 40s out there. approaching the afternoon, by lunchtime already seeing the 60s. perhaps a few 70s will develop as we head into the 3:00 hour. i think we will see 70 in places like morgan hill and gilroy, and closer to cupertino as well. by later on tonight you're enjoying christmas dinner, it looks like temperatures for the most part in the low 60s and upper 50s so very mild to normal conditions for the next 24 hours. here is a closer look at your christmas afternoon highs. and 66 for today. yesterday, actually broke an old record for an afternoon high. campbell, 69. 68 grays for the valley and 69 today in evergreen. in the east bay we'll see mid to upper 60s through the san

ramone valley. expect a hazy sunshine, especially in the east bay and the south bay. we do have a spare the air day in effect. so no burning allowed. and canta rosa checking in with -- santa rosa checking in with a high of 68 today. we will continue with this warm stretch of weather. you will see that on your seven- day forecast. partly cloudy conditions as we head into the weekend and the temperatures start to trail off as we head into next tuesday. as for traffic around the bay area, hey, if you do have somewhere to go early, this morning, you won't encounter any delays. we are currently without any hot spots. here is a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. i was kind of surprised. i saw a lot of cars driving around san francisco early this morning and i thought a lot of folks would still be in bed, but no. we're seeing top speeds here at the toll plaza. and golden gate bridge is a smooth and easy ride in the southbound direction. you'll see no delays whatsoever

he got them when someone beat him in a parking lot. the sheriff's office says the attack happened around 6:30 tuesday morning and told deputies that at least two people were involved and hit in the head before robbing him. san francisco -- health officials have issued an alert to people who ate or drank at a facility where a worker was exposed to hepatitis. he was working there the 12 through 15 onth and also the 19th. they're asking people who ate at the saloon to get tested. a man charged in a stabbing has been acquitted of all charges. the jury found the 47-year-old acted in self-defense. the jury said his attacker had previously bullied and threatened him before the fatal

santa's race became the focal point of a debate today. when asked about their special santa, macy's said santa is all things to all who believe. a kentucky mall was clearly not in the holiday spirit. a fight started over a pink package. a man you see trying to break things up, and the crowd calling for security, but they didn't get there in time. witnesses say it all went down right next to where families were waiting for a picture with santa. they say the kids were scared and began to cry and santa himself had to shield some of the kids from the violence. time 5:53. we'll be back with more.
