sort of, says the youth pastor. >> there is a service, actually. we're servicing the people in our event by doing this event. >> reporter: back to you. more than 5,000 people in san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood received free meals today thanks to those at glide member church. kron4's mike pelton shows us who got to dig in and the massive effort to put it all together. >> reporter: with christmas music blasting in the background, volunteers were at it beginning at 6:30 this morning. they have been carving hams and turkeys, cutting up vegetables as glide served a breakfast, ham, eggs, grits and biscuits and with the help of more than 500 volunteers, glide offered a christmas lunch, ham, turkey, stuffing and dessert, a meal many say they can't otherwise afford. >> these are the kind of meals we used to have with my family back home. so it kind of reminds me what christmas is all about,

sharing, showing love to one another. >> it's so much out there where people are hungry and at i'm at home enjoying my heater. i feel that giving back to the community, it makes me feel good on christmas. >> reporter: the lunch service ended at around 2:00 this afternoon. glide credits the more than 500 volunteers for helping make all of this happen. a lot of the volunteers tell me they do this every year. they will be back next year to do this again. if you would like to volunteer, glide need people year-around to volunteer, especially in the offmonths. an estimated 4,000 people, including families, enjoyed a hot meal and a warm holiday celebration at st. anthony's dining room in san francisco today. it's something that st. anthony's foundation has been doing for more than 60 years, supporting critical needs of san francisco's most vulnerable residents. organizers say it brings so

much joy, especially at this time of year. >> the generosity of san francisco is on display here, whether that's people who we think don't have anything in their lives, today they feel blessed, they feel happy and thankful for the food they have. >> with the holiday meal comes another st. anthony's tradition, volunteers hand out warm, hand-made scarfs to people who want one. look at that. the scarfs are donated from artists and knitters around the world. lefty o'doul's annual last- minute toy drive did not disappoint. by the time it was over at 2:00 this morning, the san francisco bar exceeded the goal of 10,000 toys. it collected an estimated 11,200 gifts. the toys were given to the san francisco police and fire department and firefighters on engine one loaded up their truck with toys and made frequent stops passing out toys to some very excited boys and girls in the tender line. it was all part of the san francisco firefighters' toy

program, the city's oldest and the nation's longest-running program. >> i've had people come up to me off the streets and thank me for the toys later on in life and i didn't know who they were. >> this year, firefighters were able to give out 40,000 toys to needy children and families. new at 5:00, kron4 was the first on the scene of a car that caught fire. it happened around 3:30 this afternoon on oakport street across from oracle arena in oakland. three people were inside the car. they were able to get out. you see the flames and black smoke there. authorities say the car had engine problems and started smoking before the flames came. fortunately, no one was hurt. a fatal double shooting inside a san lorenzo home overnight. sheriff's officials have not identified the victims but say the two victims, a husband and a wife, were found in the

garage. kron4's will tran reports from the scene. >> reporter: investigators spent the day in the murder and this murder suicide took place at the home behind me. here's video that we got overnight. this happened shortly before 2:00 in the morning. investigators say this was a murder-suicide that, in fact, it was the man who shot the woman. there were other family members inside. any time there's a gun, they say, yes, there's always a threat but it appears he only went after his wife. i talked to the auntie. she says it appears the two were having some kind of mara tell issues -- marital issues.

>> i just got a call from my niece and she told me that my sister was dead and she said -- she was crying and couldn't tell me anything else. she just said she was there. i was gonna go over there and find out more details and that's what i'm here, to find out more details. >> reporter: she lives there with her husband? >> she lives there with her husband and mother-in-law and father-in-law and children. >> this seems very clear this was a murder-suicide. there's no threat to the neighborhood or community. this is unfortunately, a very tragic incident that occurred on christmas and we're working through it too find out not so much -- to find out not so much what happened but why it happened. >> reporter: investigators, of course, talked to the witnesses, including the niece inside the home, ail day -- all day with the bodies waiting for the coroner's office to arrive. they say other than that, they don't have a motive behind this

suit. you saw him wince in pain. it happened while he was walking in the street during a toy delivery. nikki caught up with the volunteer who reports on how santa is doing. >> reporter: it was the day before christmas -- >> it's still in there. >> reporter: the community -- in in community, somebody tried to stop christmas by shooting santa claus. police say it was a pellet gun from somewhere nearby that fired shots into old st. nick's back. >> i'm glad i i got hit no one else got hurt. >> reporter: santa was in town delivering presents for the kids. something he's done for the past eight years. >> merry christmas. >> reporter: he was taken to george washington hospital where they removed the pellets and sent him on his way. >> i got shot somewhere back -- it's kind of right in there somewhere. right there.

so again, spare the air tonight and into the day tomorrow. wood burning is prohibited and we'll continue to see the hazy skies for at least another day as air pollution remains poor. we have the system coming in friday. that should help to mix up the atmosphere a little bit. we'll have increasing clouds from that system but still sunshine in the works for friday and again, no rain in site all the way through the beginning of 2014. as we go into the weekend, the clouds clear. we'll see the sunshine again and some more warm days with highs getting in the 60s. we'll start out for thursday. pretty cold in the north bay valleys. upper 20s for santa rosa and napa. below freezing, fairfield. low to mid-30s east bay valleys. upper 30s san jose. 30s bay side. look at the highs for the afternoon. we could be getting close to record highs with mid- to upper 60s and even close to 70 degrees into san jose, napa and santa rosa. and this warm weather lasts for quite a while. we'll seal highs in the 60s --

3,000 contra costa county residents were treated to hot meals, toys for the kids and free clothing. when they say christmas for everybody, that includes pets. thanks to the good folks from pleasanton's valley humane society. >> we are giving away dog food to people who can't afford to feed their animals. we found out a long time ago that they were giving their food to their dogs and cats. that's not good for them or the dogs and cats. we have because of donations, about 8,000 pounds of food that we can give away. >> about 150 families received food for their pets at today's christmas for everyone event. and more than 5,000 people in need received a free meal today. it's all thanks to san francisco's glide memorial church. two meals were offered, a christmas breakfast and then lunch. 500 glide volunteers showed up bright and early and made the day a huge success as always.

organizers say while there are more volunteers during the holiday season, volunteers are needed all year long. well, lefty o'doul's 24- hour toy drive has collectst -- has collected more than 11,000 toys. the 13th annual san francisco toy drive was kicked off at 5:00 a.m. yesterday by mayor ed lee alongside city's police and fire chiefs, all singing christmas carols along with other performers. it ended at 2:00 a.m. today with a total of 11,200 toys collected. next year, organizers hope to pair with tech companies like facebook and twitter and uber to garner even more donations. well, new at 6:00 tonight in less than an hour, the homeless youth alliance in san francisco will close unless there's a christmas miracle. the nonprofit has been open for 12 years in the haight-ashbury neighborhood. it serves meals, provides medical services and counseling to about 5,000 homeless kids a

year. the building on haight needs $300,000 in seismic upgrades. the landlord says it cannot afford to lease it anymore. the organization has not come up with the $3 million it needs to purchase it. unless somebody donates by 7:00 tonight, in less a than an hour, the -- in less than an hour, the doors will close. there are plans for a mobile unit so the organization can continue to provide services. the family of 13-year-old jahi mcmath says they will discuss tomorrow whether they will appeal a court ruling that children's hospital oakland has a right to remove the teen from life support. she's been in the hospital for two weeks and has been declared brain dead. she went in for a routine tonsil surgery, later had complication. right now, a court order prevents the hospital from taking any action through the weekend. today, the family spent christmas day with jahi in her
