the city of oakland is bracing for a couple of protests on new year's eve. demonstrators are planning to march from frank ogawa plaza to city hall. around 9:30pm tomorrow night -- saying it's a protest against police actions -- locally and world-wide.. city officials say they don't expect problems - but there will be extra police on duty to protect property and public safety. >> catherine:on new years day. organizers have scheduled a noon rally. in memory of oscar grant. he's the young man who was shot and killed by an bart officer five years ago. there will also be an evening event on new years today to celebrate his

>> catherine:there's a new wrinkle in a missing person's case that has baffled authorities for nearly a month. tuh-leeka patrick, a doctor in residency in michigan, didn't show up for work on december sixth. her car was later found in indiana. now, new online videos have surfaced - which investigators hope will help in finding her. alexandra field reports.

>> reporter:memorials to the carnage, like this one at the corner of vine and oak streets near downtown are becoming all too familiar in san jose. traffic zooms past the spot where 3-year-old elijah elvitre was struck and killed by a pickup truck as he was pushed in a stroller. neighbors like karen black want people to slow down. >> reporter:elijah is one of 26 traffic fatalities involving pedestrians so far this year. that's the highest number since 1997 and the most of any city in the bay area. another memorial marks the spot in front of james lick high school where a 14 year old girl was killed as she crossed busy white road. more recently, a 17 year old high school student was struck and killed as she rode her bicycle here along branham lane near vista park drive. >> this is very sad. i do not understand? how can they

not obey the stop sign? >> reporter:there is no real pattern to the fatalities, although several involved people trying to cross well traveled streets at night. in at least five cases, police say mutual inattention by both driver and pedestrian were cited. one example being a woman in dark clothing killed as she tried to cross four lanes of traffic here on monterey road. >> reporter: state in the crosswalk if possible. >> catherine: happening now.
