person driving look bloodied and was taken away in an ambulance. no word on his condition. but police say it is being driving. a young mother is killed while carrying her baby across the street on new year's eve. the baby is in critical condition tonight. we are learning more about the victims. scott. >> reporter: yeah. this happened right at this intersection behind me. this is padre and mowry. just a terrible accident on new year's eve. police want to know why this 19- year-old and 17-year-old walked out in street. it was here at this intersection where a tragic new year's eve accident took place. 19-year-old ashley was crossing the street around 9:55 last night. with her was her 17-year-old sister and in her arms, her

three-month-old baby boy. police say it was a 64-year-old man driving a truck that hit all three of them.isoá-she was hospital where she died. the three-month-old who was sent in the air 30 feet as a result of the impact was taken to children's hospital oakland in critical condition. investigators say there awas some sort of argument just before the accident and they were not in a crosswalk when they were hit. now, i did check with police. they tell me that alcohol is not a factor in this. the driver of the truck is completely cooperating tonight but they are figuring out why they were in the middle of the street. coming up at 6:00, i will show you the vigil. i will be here and talk to the family members. reporting live in fremont, kron 4 news. >> a young girl is dead, two others hurt after they were struck by an suv in san francisco on new year's eve. they were hit at polk avenue.

the woman was in life- threatening conditions and the boy was expected to survive. police say the driver did stay on the scene. no word if that driver will face any charges. one person was killed in coke land when an suv turned over on highway 580 this morning. the accident happening just after 2:00 on lake shore avenue near park boulevard. highway patrol says the person was trapped underneath a white ford escape. the roadway was closed until the accident was cleared about 5:00 this morning. an east oakland boy who was shot on new year's eve is dead. the boy is under 15 years old and was shot near walnut street around 9:30 last night. he was taken to the hospital where he died of his injuries and pronounced dead this morning. the shooting happened 10 minutes after a woman was shot and killed in oakland san antonio neighborhood. >> a nice sunset this evening. happy 2014. we had fair conditions last

kron 4. >> reporter: taking these small steps downstairs shows a huge improvement for robert gibbs. kron 4 news found the now 24- year-old livermore man after he posted a video on youtube pleading for help to lose weight. at the time, he weighed about 700 pounds. the video went viral and the morbid loobies man got the help that he desperately needed -- morbid lee obese man got the help that he desperately needed. he needed several emts just to get him out of the house. 18 months later, gibbs is back home. he now weighs about 500 pounds. >> i just have a lot more enjoyment in my life. even the little things. being able to walk up and down the stairs. was not easy.

the enrollees must have paid their first premiums. under the affordable care act, all americans must have abróhea coverage or face a fine. the >ósfj&law also guarantees t one can be denied coverage for preexisting conditions. they hope to have 7 million people enrolled by the end of march. the supreme court has thrown a hitch into the health care law over a birth control provision only hours after the law was to take effect. justin sonia blocked the provision requiring religious organizations from providing insurance that includes birth control. catholic organizations in particular have taken issue with that requirement. government officials have until friday to respond to the order and justify the birth control provision. bad weather has delayed another attempt to rescue people from a russian ship stuck in the antarctic ice.

despite efforts to stomp out a landing area for a helicopter, rescuers were not able to maneuver the helicopter because of strong winds. the vessel has been stuck in :úq/%for more than a week. cnn has the latest on the rescue attempt. >> encouraging news. the 74 passengers and crew aboard the research vessel in i since christmas, he believes that the rescue operation could begin as early as thursday morning. well, at the moment, they're 12 nautical miles away from the vessel but obviously two nautical miles from the chinese ice breaker who has come to help. it is in a holding position because the ice around is so deep that they cannot reach open water. if that happens a helicopter will fly to the research vessel

and evacuate scientists and journalists in groups of 12 to 15. they will be transported to the ice breaker where they will stop at casey before heading to australia. the crew will remain on the stranded vessel until the ice loosens up. they have ample supplies and will also be restocked. despite the situation, everyone on board is in remarkable spirits. it has attracted the attention of the world media, including anderson cooper. >> we hear that you are really keeping up moral. >> we're trying to keep everybody going. we're in great spirits. we're looking forward to getting home. >> bad weather has been the biggest obstacle in reaching the ship. according to the captain, the skies have now cleared, a promising sign for the rescue

team and those on board the stranded vessel. cnn hong kong. >> developing news a little closer to home. cold weather is creating unusual sights here in the u.s. in oregon a man driving a tractor-trailer ran off of the highway and crashed into the ice covering clamoth lake. the truck was halfway submerged. nobody was injured. he climbed out the window. he had a doggone board that had crews. no explanation why he lost control. in minnesota, people are dealing with sub zero temperatures. it got so cold in minneapolis that mini falls inside of a park was frozen solid. temperatures reached about 7 below zero fahrenheit. >> nothing close to that around the bay area. as we're reaching night fall, hardly any wind.

the vigil getting underway out here. they have brought candles, signs, all to remember their friend, ashley. she was killed out here when she was crossing the street last night with her 3-month-old baby in her arms. she was walking across the street here at the intersection of mowry and paseo padre. she was hit by a 64-year-old man driving a pickup truck. he hit all three people. there was the 17-year-old, 19- year-old and the baby. they were not in a crosswalk when this happened. the 19-year-old was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead. that 3-month-old was taken to the children's hospital and is still ob2/ tonight. police want to know why the three of them were not in the crosswalk. i'm also told that police right now say that drunk driving was not even in play here. that's not what happened. but they're trying to figure out why the three of them were not using a crosswalk.

this vigil just underway. i spoke to family members. i will show you that reaction coming up at 8:00. kron 4 news. >> a deadly crash in san francisco's tenderloin leaves one child :jrqzdead and two oth hurt. a candle now marks the spot where it happened. police say a driver ran into a woman and two children who were crossing the street near polk and ellis last night. all were transported to the hospital but one of the children, a girl, passed away. tonight, the woman is in critical condition. the young boy is expected to survive. police say the driver in the accident is cooperating with police. investigators say drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in this crash. a suspected drunk driver leaves a trail of destruction through a hayward neighborhood. it happened shortly before 6:00 this morning. the car went through several people's yards before hitting another car and flying up into the air. the dramatic crash was caught

right there on surveillance video. you see the 1966 mustang under the car cover that gets hit. the silver vehicle comes flying through the air into the picture and lands on top of the classic car. the driver was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. more than 150 people were arrested on dui charges during this holiday season in san mateo county. the latest arrest numbers show between december 13th and last night at midnight, there were 168 people arrested. that's down from last year when there were 201 arrests. at least check, there were about 340 arrests in santa clara. 540 in alameda county. but final numbers for those two counties have yet to be released. two separate shootings leave two people dead in oakland. the first happening around 9:00 last night on 22nd avenue near east 20th street. the second shooting happened just minutes later, near the intersection of 104th and walnut street.
