a massive winter storm is
6:01 am
slamming the northeast this morning, bringing with it frigid forecasts for gusting winds, sub-zero windchills and blizzard conditions. the nor'easter comes just as parts of the midwest and east coast restored power to tens of thousands of residents from the last storm. boston specifically is under a snow emergency. as much as two feet of snow is forecast there. steve kastenbaum is braving the bitter cold and snow in boston. when gus over 45 mi. per hour. visibility down to over a quarter of a mile. the storm has already made a mess of air travel causing more than 2000 flight cancellations and the region. not to mention that the delays nationwide. the nor'easter was only expected to make matters worse through friday especially in boston which could see a foot of snow.

6:03 am
early in hopes that sure flight is ok. here's some of the video we shot earlier this morning. you can see the long lines. i have an update from sfo. j. f. k. one of the hardest-hit airports in the country but they tell me they also are monitoring the situation that they believed jfk will open up at 630 local time, our time here. that means if you're heading to jfk a little bit later it's a good chance your flight will be o.k. but you have to monitor the situation because it could be pushed back after that and as they said everything is on time so it can switch to cancel and a heart beat. looks like 25 minutes from now jfk should be open for business. a lot of people were hoping to take off earlier from jfk to other parts of the country but they aren't going anywhere at this moment including some niners fans who we caught up with 3 here's one fan had for his trip to a level field.
6:04 am
>>: ready to go. goldminers. --go niners. >>will: you're heading to green bay. are you having any difficulty? >>: yes. we had a three hour layover in dallas. we have to figure how to get to milwaukee. how you even get to milwaukee from this place. >>will: you heard that jfk shutdown this morning right? >>: yes. we also heard on the news that they will open up. hopefully by the time we get there they are open. the >>darya: you heard that he was heading to jfk. it could change because originally jfk was to be opened at 5:00 local time that did not happen. the latest we are hearing is 630 but again
6:05 am
such a fluid situation. you heard that his flight was around 745. he is beyond the 630 mark. but you never know. he could give back in line and wait to see a demo we just lost well but he was talking about how jfk is still closed and they are supposed to open here in 25 minutes but they keep the plane that. there were supposed to open at 5:00 but delayed by another 45 minutes but we will keep you posted on that. looks like folks are being unfairly patient as we are tracking the storm. speaking of tracking the storm here's erica of letting us know where it is now where it is going next. >>erica: this is right out of boston. when that speeds up to 30 mi. per hour. you'll see that from any time soon. just north of boston we did see an upward

of 21 in. of snow. more expected to be on the way and we are following those like cancellations. here's a look at satellite and radar not as active as what we saw 24 hours ago. the storm was still intact in the midwest but as of right now is still only affecting the eastern seaboard. here in the bay area quite a contrast. although we are quick enough to pretty cold temperatures. 33 degrees in santa rosa. we will see it sunshine dry weather and perhaps record-breaking afternoon highs. we will continue with mild weather into the weekend but we could see winter like weather and the bay area finally by the end of next week. will be checking your 7 day around the bay coming up in just a couple of amendments. >>george: a major problem of growing on the freeway interstate 283 just north of daly city. north of the john daly exit. it's actually ride here between the san jose off ramp from the south
