today is the day the niners facing off in green bay against the packers. we're live with a look at the matchup. scary moments on a streetcar. what happens after it collided. it will be cold across the country. the bone chilling temperatures and how travel could be affected. good morning. let's get to the top story. the 49ers in green bay ready to take on the packers. following the team and taking on the freezing temperatures in green bay as we go to lambeau

field. >> you look a tad chilly. >> it has been a heat wave here. we have a high of negative 5. temperatures have improved from what they were forecasting a few days ago it will feel like 20 below zero and one of the coldest nfl games ever played. tailgaters are not out yet. some of the attends are out here. those who want to tail gate and one of the beverages will freeze as well. we have even people here on lambeau, one drove from california. i asked him how he will deal with the cold a that the packers fans are calling chilly. >> we are skiers we have lots of base layers, we will be here

in green bay. no where near that here. >> we have that off shore wind and the higher elevations. >> and 25 degrees there. and 47 degrees about mid30s. we'll have more in a moment. >> thank you. a man is in jail for kidnapping a girl. david douglas graped -- grabbed the girl in front of her home the suspect was arrested hours after the alert was broadcast.

they are asking that the privacy be respected. there were a number of family and friends that showed up to share in the joy. they arrested david douglas for arresting the girl in front of her home. an alert was issued when she went missing. the child and mother pulled up to the driveway on the 3800 block of hummingbird drive after shopping. douglas followed them home in his 1990 camary. he grabbed the girl and took off. the police department followed up on leads and confirmed that he was the suspect. it was spotted in a parking lot. douglas and the victim were inside the car at the time they approached the vehicle. he was arrested and natalie, who was not injured, was reunited with her family.

>> douglas' home is away from the wal-mart and the victim's house. we spoke with neighbors that saw him regularly, they were shocked to hear of his arrest in the case. three lanes of i-280 were closed due to a deadly crash. the chp says a vehicle split in half was found after four a.m. we have information about a murder in 2010. police arrest ed a suspect wanted in connection with the the shooting of a tourist in san francisco. and it led to the arrest. and 6 others have been investigated after a shooting.

two teens were struck by bullets but survived. friends and family have set up a fundraiser for a 19 year old who was struck and killed walking in fremont. the woman was holding her son when she was struck by a car. they were walking at 10 p.m. in the evening. this morning police say her son remains at the hospital in the man is cooperating with the investigators. he is not suspected of dui a fundraiser has been set up by give forward to collect funds for her burial and other costs.

an investigation is underway regarding a crash. it was on the embarcadero and it was closed after a semi pulled in front of the vehicle. the trolly and the rig crash happened near bay street. one of the passengers had to pry his wife free. >> we were in the front seat, my wife was pinned between the railing and the seat and screening in pain. we removed the seat and got her out. >> the four injured were the only people on board the trolly at the time. it was reopened to traffic by saturday afternoon. still ahead on the news weekend. break out the winter coats. it will be cold all over the country. how people are preparing for the freezing temperatures and how travel could be affected.

three passengers on a plane suffered minor injuries on saturday. they had to make an emergency landing on a new york city highway. that was cell phone video. they were returning to connecticut after a tour around the statue of liberty when the engine failed. it came down through the trees and workers sprang into action. >> we started slowing down the traffic so nobody was hurt and the plane is not hit by the cars. >> the passengers on the plane walked away with only minor injuries they were quick to

rescuers are on the way to help trapped workers. an ice breaker will leave for the south pole today. they fear the ships can not free themselves. the russian research ship has been trapped in ice since christmas eve. the chinese ship went and it was stuck on friday.

following the retrieval of 52 people on the ship. they are all on the way home. and those trapped on the russian ship have supplies and in no immediate danger. it must feel like the south pole to some people. a deep freeze is spreading across the u.s. making last week's winter weather look like a walk in the park. half of the country will be dealing with zero degree temperatures by wednesday. many are cancelling schools. airlines are cancelling flights in preparation for the blast. we have the latest. >> reporter: after battering the northeast, the country is bracing for a deep freeze. they are not taking it lightly. for the first time since 1997, public schools in the state of minnesota will be closed monday due to the cold.

>> in five minutes kids can get frost bite. >> the potential of tragedy on monday is too much. why not minimize the risk. airlines are trying to minimize the risk from the snow, ice and brutal cold. according to the flight aware, more than 1000 flights were canceled saturday with several thousand more delayed. passengers are lining up and sleeping at airports struggling to find a way home. the one thing that is not canceled is football. the packers will still duke it out with the 49ers ers sunday night in green bay, braving the negative 20 dry temperatures at the outdoor stadium for a shot at the super bowl. for a coffee and hot chocolate will be provided to the fans in

fairfield. a high for castro valley. and 60s for san bruno and those of you in napa. looking at satellite and radar. we have the high pressure in place keeping things mild. we have low pressure headed our way. we'll see that increasing cloud cover tomorrow. and feel the temperatures drop. and we have a chance of sprinkles tuesday morning, the temperatures dropping into the 50s. you see an increase and the showers on thursday. and then warmer as we push towards the next weekend. marty. >> thank you. we're following a developing story in eureka where the police are uncovering the events that led up to the killing of a priest on new year's day. it is a grim picture. it appears the man accused in the death was actually in police custody hours before.

we have the story. >> gary bullock had already confronted law enforcement twice, got arrested. spent eight hours in jail all in less than a day before he was the suspect in the murder of a priest father eric freed. arrested for public intoxication during the day of new year's eve, he had to be taken away for a high heart rate. he act up at the hospital and had to be physically restrained by the deputies before being taken back to jail. records show that he was already on probation for cocaine possession, a spokesperson for the sheriff says that the department was not required to hold him until a judge reviewed the case so he was let go. he only had to walk three blocks to the church where he was described as making strange noises.

a guard called police who did not know the details of the problems that he had at the county jail. >> they saw he was released on a public intoxication charge after being held. >> officers decided that he was not doing anything illegal and did not qualify for an emergency psychological hold. >> they asked him specific questions about himself. he asked for housing, he asked for a place to stay for the night. >> so they didn't arrest him. instead they directed him to a nearby shelter and watched him walk away. they now say he never went to the shelter and was spotted shortly back at the church. this time police aren't called. >> and police say that a guard at the church found a person matching the description on the premises and told him to leave. later the priest's body was discovered. police say that he suffered blunt force trauma.

>> we got the second mri back, it was devastating. everything but the brain stem it tells you to breathe and gives you blood pressure, that's why she is alive. the lack of oxygen. >> someone had to run down the hall to get a paediatrician to revive her, it was too late. >> the family and lawyers for children's hospital oakland are working towards moving jahi mcmath to another facility. her uncle spoke with us and they are making strides. they are close to having her moved. and they met at a conference after a day of hearings. the family attorney originally asked a judge to force children's hospital to insert a tube and feeding tube, all in hopes of transferring her.

fee increase starting at stations. not all the stations are hiking the parking fee. one of the largest unions approved a four-year labor deal. the agreement will leave out the disputed medical leave provision but workers will get paid bereavement and potential bounces. there will be a vote january 13th. a negotiators is hopeful they will approve the agreement and it will end the labor dispute that included strikes. a woman suffers injuries after falling from a cliff in santa cruz. it was saturday about 7:45 at the natural bridges state beach. the fire department said she fell about 30 feet as she was taking a walk near the edge of a clip. swimmers were able to stabilize her and raise her back up to

what they can help those who have no escape. it is keeping the homeless warm. the city and agencies are pooling resources to get those out in the elements inside in the coming days. a service is adding shelters to keep up with the demand. the director of the service said people donated canned food to help the homeless staying at the shelter. >> we have to help one another out in the time of need. we're all human. everyone needs help. >> it is unthinkable someone has to suffer. and they need hand. >> the temperature expected to dip as low as 15 degrees below zero. >> and bringing it back home to the bay area, we have a chilly start to the morning but we are not getting the negatives. >> not to negative 15. we could see record breaking warmth this afternoon.

it is a breezy start. but we are expecting record warmth. we have some of the warmer spots. and cooler temperatures. we have a chance of showers tuesday and thursday. taking a look at where know are. mid20s out the door. another chilly start. 28 there. and 47 degrees in oakland and 43 in san mateo and now as we head into the afternoon. it is going to look like lots of sunshine and warm temperatures in the south bay. and 68 for those in santa clara. we're look at low to mid30s. livermore. and 66 degrees the expected high. and downtown san francisco and topping out in the mid-60s.

could be affected. good morning. thank you for joining us. and the 49ers in green bay ready to take on the packers today in the playoff game. following the team and taking on the freezing temperatures is mike pelton who is braving the conditions outside of lambeau. >> reporter: after speculation, it appears we will not set the record for the coldest nfl game played. that was the ice bowl here as well. conditions were negative 13 but they have improved here and currently it is the 5 degrees not negative 5 as was the forecasted high a few days ago. and the 49ers are trying to get adjusted to the colder weather. they arrived in appleton. the problem is that the 49ers first full day well it was 28
