problems across the country. record temperatures continue. i don't think the sunshine will cause any warm. after traffic and the bay area the chp is currently handling a few minor accidents out there but nothing more than a fender benders crowley on the right hand shoulder. as for the bridges you are good to go here on this perhaps back to work schools closed,

businesses disrupted.and big delays at airports including flights coming and going from the bay area. plus - a east bay woman hailed a hero. for being alert.and helping get an abducted little girl home safe. and no more time in court for jahi mcmath's family. at least for now. as the brain dead teen gets the care they want for her.away from children's hospital oakland. the kron 4 morning news starts right now. good morning. it is tuesday, january 7th. i'm james fletcher. and im anny hong the bitter cold and snowy conditions stranded flights and passengers. 37- hundred flights were cancelled throughout the u-s monday. some of them -- right here in the bay area. kron-4's jeff bush was at s- f-o with how many flights were cancelled monday and what we can expect for today. then i think we already expected that there would be

a chance for the airport to be on the way. even before the house that just before we left the house we knew it was the late that we found out it was canceled. so we are just rolling with the punches. >>: i'm going to be two days late. >>: we will have to jfk and they get back to boston and around midnight. unfortunately we found out that was canceled. >>: and should have driven to l.a. by now. >>: the majority of the problems were here at sfo but other bay area airports also had cancellations. there were nine in san jose and one in oakland. on monday. i'm jeff bush at sfo kron 4 news. >>anny: in other bay area news,a woman is being called a hero after calling police about the suspect's car in an antioch kidnapping last week.

seven year old natalie calvo was found safe just a couple hours after her abduction on friday. roxanna raim noticed david douglas's strange behavior as he walked into the target she worked at in pittsburg friday morning. she then went back to the office and watched him on the surveillance cameras. douglas eventually left the store and went into the parking lot where he hung because of his bizarre actions, roxanna wrote down the license plate number from his gold toyota camry. later that night, there was an amber alert for 7 year old natalie calvo was kidnapped. douglas' description and car fit what roxanna saw earlier. roxanna called authorities and 2 hours later, police were at her door thanking her for cracking the case. friday's kidnapping of seven- year-old natalie calvo finished with a happy ending. she was found safely just a couple hours after reports of her abduction.

>>: and does happen she made it home safe and she can continue her childhood. and as it turns out -- police were not the only heroes in finding the young girl. kron-4's alecia reid spoke with a woman whose call to police about the suspect's car. prompted the search. this video. taken by jahi mcmath's family attorney. shows, a private ambulance leaving oakland's children's hospital sunday night. the family will not say where jahi has been moved. because of privacy and safety concerns. the girl went into cardiac arrest after getting her tonsils removed at children's hospital last month. the family has been fighting the hospital in court for weeks. to keep the girl on a ventilator. their attorney says, she is now getting the help she needs. she has been given antibiotics to combat certain infections. she has been given nutrition

support. also in central banks to help balance her blood. ".help her." children's hospital says, providing the treatment that jahi's family wanted. would have been medically and ethically inappropriate. because the hospital says. she is deceased. >>james:meantime - u.s. district court judge saundra brown armstrong has cancelled a hearing that had been scheduled for today to discuss jahi's future at children's. in an order issued yesterday afternoon.armstrong called the hearing "moot".because the issue lawyers would have debated.has already been >>anny:coming up on the kron four morning news with obama back at the white house handling business for the new year-- one issue at the top of his lise extending long-term unemployment benefits.we'll explain. and residents in san francisco will no longer have to complain about corporate shuttle buses delaying muni buses. the plan the city announced to regulate those shuttles next

for all nine. there will be some changes to 36 bus lines run by the santa clara valley transportation authority. major changes include added buses, meaning more trips per day, to lines 66, 68, 121 and 181. routes 328 and 330 will be extended and stops added at almaden expressway and trinidad drive and the expressway and via valiente. line 522 will run over more hours on weekdays and

saturdays and new service added on sundays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. all adjustments made to the 36 lines are listed on the vta's website, v-t-a dot org. >>anny: a pilot program was launched yesterday that will allow private commuter buses to stop at certain muni bus stops in exchange for a fee. city officials says the 18- month program will allow the buses to stop at about 200 of the city's 2,5-hundred plus muni bus stops if they pay a fee the fee for the bus operators, which transport employees for

companies like google, apple and facebook will depend on how many stops a bus makes daily. the 200 muni bus stops will only be available to permitted operators. the rest of muni's bus stops will be off-limits to the commuter buses. people are doing their best to cope with the frigid weather that continues to grip much of the midwest and northeast this morning. as andrew spencer reports. even arctic animals are finding the weather unpleasant. another day and another morning of dangerously cold temperatures in the midwest.

in another day and another morning of dangerously cold temperatures in the midwest. its so cold in fact, three amtrak trains got stuck in illinois, with more than five hundred passengers aboard. you can see the train cars covered in ice. temperatures in the area broke a record of minus 16 degrees. the trains were halted yesterday about 80 miles west of chicago. one of them, the californa zephyr,

is from the bay area. passengers are staying on the trains and are being fed and kept comfortable by the crew. the deep freeze is also causing plenty of power problems. some 30-thousand homes and businesses don't have electricity in indiana. and temperatures are in the negative teens. officials say some people could be without power for days. >>erica: some temperatures haven't seen temperatures this cold in the past 20 years. green bay now 17 below zero. temperatures will continue to drop. in fact some spot actually colder than yesterday. we're talking about the wind chill factor. looks like the

south cold arctic air is pushing its way south and east so we do have a windshield warnings as far south as florida. a chicago feels like 30 below zero. by tomorrow morning more than half the country will see it readings below zero but again here in the bay area we are pretty much unaffected. but we do have some delays and cancellations. most of us will remain in the '60s. sunspots warmer than yesterday thanks to the increase in cloud cover. it's going to be an over cast afternoon. a lot of those clouds will hold up around. santa clara today

indicating speeds 50 mi. per hour. conditions are about equal in both directions of highway 92. back to the traffic map. nothing to report for the nimitz freeway. all was well in the south bay and as for the peninsula for your ride along the bay shore north bound 101 we're seeing top speeds without any accidents to reports. freeze over. a federal judge has ruled that chicago's gun ban is unconstitutional. the city wanted to ban virtually all sales and transfers of firearms. u-s district judge edmond chang said he realizes that officials are trying to stop gun violence. but says "certain fundamental rights are protected by the constitution." the f-b-i's latest annual

crime report showed chicago more couples around the country who get pregnant while dating are opting to live together rather than get a quickie marriage. the national center for health statisitcs show that for the first time over the past decade, living together has surpassed the "shotgun wedding" for expecting couples. shotgun cohabitation update: as cohabitation gains favor, shotgun weddings fade vice president biden will be in albany, new york today discussing rebuilding efforts following hurricane sandy with new york's governor, andrew cuomo. the two plan to address infrastructure and other investments.

construction for nicaragua's inter-ocean canal will start at the end of this year, contradicting a

recent announcement that it would be delayed until 2015. the president of the canal authority said all the studies needed to start building the canal are being carried out in a timely manner. over the weekend, there were reports that construction would begin a year later

than planned because the waterway's path has yet to be defined. legislators approved a grant in june for a beijing- based telecommunications company to build and operate the canal.

weather because that's making headlines all across the country. >>erica: the morning. we are talking extensively about the deep freeze. a lot of folks actually and hospital not only because of a snowstorm last week again because of the cold arctic air that has settled in its place. we're really talking about snowy conditions. you see it is barely dry. all that cold air will causing havoc for a good half of the country. here's a look at temperatures. 1700. when we factored a wind chill that's what's important is what it feels like. it actually feels like 30 below zero in chicago cleveland 39 below zero in green bay so very cold weather in fact. by tomorrow morning more than half the country will be waking up to temperatures below zero. this is a big

story we will continue to monitor. this arctic air really settling in to the east and south right now. here in the bay area although we are not dealing with severely cold weather some of us actually are looking up to freezing. we are 32 in napa. san francisco at 49 degrees and 47 of the door and san jose. it's actually not as cold as 24 hours ago based on all the call cover streaming in. we are waking up too high clouds with no issues of visibility. as we head into the afternoon and will remain pretty overcast for most of us. the clock will stay in the '60s. 63. your 7 day around the bay forecast shows a we will continue with this growing trend perhaps a slight chance for showers as we head into thursday. the past that, we are back in the sunshine as we work with our way of the

welcome back time now for 45. an autopsy shows that a beloved priest murdered new year's day in northern california was beaten to death with a wooden stake and a metal gutter pipe. police add the attacker broke in a side window of the rectory at st. bernard catholic church. meanwhile, gary lee bullock, a 43-year-old humboldt county man, was arraigned monday on charges of murder, burglary and arson. authorities have said bullock was released from jail on a disorderly conduct charge several hours before the break-in and slaying. the jail is just a few blocks from the church.

jerry sandusky's campaign to have his penn state pension restored is going before a hearing, more than a year after his child molestation conviction led the state pension agency to revoke it. sandusky is expected to participate by video conference in the proceeding that starts this morning. the hearing could last three days and bring to the stand witnesses tied to penn state and the second mile, a children's charity founded by sandusky where he met at least some of his victims. a decision could take months. the former penn state assistant football coach lost a $4,900-a-month pension in october 2012, when he was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison for child sexual abuse. i 446 + find out about our own forecast as to wake up on this tuesday morning. erica has a look at that. >>: it's not as bad to get out of bed this morning because temperatures are

counts. 23 year-old barry white jr. was arrested in july of 2013 after police say he runs--roibbebbed victoga jury store on-jew elry store on brannan street. police say white killed two female employees of the store and critically injured the 50 year-old male owner. white was armed with 8.38 caliber revolver. after running from the jury store into a nearby-jewelry store into a nearby tacqueria police say he opened fire on several officers. white has entered a not guilty plea.
