did not know if someone was inside of the apartment they came to search. all officers involved were wearing a bulletproof vest. they said the shooting is accidental but investigators are looking to see whether the other officer had accidently discharged his gun or miss took sergeant smith as a suspect or someone else in the apartment. we're staying on the story of what have appeared throughout the morning. >>: our team coverage continues of the following are police officer tom smith. >>: continuing our team coverage this morning.of a bart police officer.shot and killed by another officer. thomas smith was a 20-year veteran of the bart police department. and leaves behind his wife kellie. and their six-year- old daughter. smith is the 36th officer killed in california by accidental gunfire. but the first in the bay area since 2001.

the alameda county sheriff's office tells kron 4 this morning that smith is the first bart officer killed in the line of duty since the department's creation. investigators worked late into the night to figure out how the 20-year- veteran was accidently shot and killed while conducting an investigation as many questions are left unanswered. joining us live now with more on what happened is here's a video from sky seven of his body being put into the coroner's office after he was rushed to edam medical center. unfortunately doctors cannot revive him. you see the american flag draped over his casket. it runs in his family. his brother is with the alameda county sheriff's department. another brother with a new work police department and his wife also a bart police officer. we had a chance to talk to the bart police chief. here's what he had to say about to the public of this terrible situation that they are

dealing with. >>: condolences go out to the immediate family and friends in the extended part family and the entire bar district. we ask that everyone please give us a chance to catch our breath, a brief >>will: just to give you some perspective on this darya. i talked to another officer with an outside agency. obviously they're all willing from this. especially the bart police department. this officer told me as far as they are concerned. it's better to be shot dead by suspected to shoot an officer acted in a friendly fire. that's how deep and careful this is. there try to understand exactly what happened and that's why this investigation is going to take some time. we are here and we will try to get some reaction and a little bit more from the police chief later on this morning.

dublin when he was shot. he died at hospital. smith is barred first officer killed in a line of duty. investigator survey that scene for nine grueling hours trying to figure out exactly how this happened. this is a map showing where he was shot near 580 sx 80 when they come together and dublin. the officers were conducting a probation search at the park sierra apartment complex on the iron horse trail ride along toward the road. residents who live in that complex are mourning the loss of officer smith. here's a picture of him from about 20 years ago when kron4 interviewed him for a story then. his neighbors say they are shocked and remember him being a really nice guy. >>: family oriented. a great neighbor. friendly and every which way. very tough moment here.

the problem of the arriving flights. the flights leaving from those places that are affected by this snow. places like jfk new work boston washington dc. those are the places that are really having an effect. in fact he says it's only to cancellations leaving sfo but 24 cancellations as for all rivals coming into sfo today. so if you're expecting someone to come in from the east coast today you should probably expected at least delayed possibility of cancellations is going to take a while for them to catch up over 2000 cancellations. i run the country. everyone is scrambling to find their plants to help out. so even if they're not affected you may be affected because your airplane itself may be stuck in some airport around the country. just be aware of that.
