>> reporter: in oakland haazig minute kron4 news. >> reporter: tonight what we know now about sergeant tom smith. >> reporter: the 42 year old had been with the bart police department for the past 23 years. he was in charge of the bart police detective unit. kron4 interviewed him some 20 years ago for a story about car break-ins at a bart station. law enforcement was in his blood. one of his brothers is a new war police officer another is an alameda county deputy. his wife kelly is bart police officer. smith lives the leaves behind a young daughter. the family lives
