police officers say they were looking for evidence of a marijuana grow operation inside the home of vladislav miftakhov.and found something much more dangerous. a homemade bomb and bomb making materials in a suitcase. he allegedly told police he planned to blow things up and bought the materials to make the explosives online. he was also charged with risking a catastrophe and other drug related offenses. >> the 19 year old is an engineering student at penn state altoona. but kron 4's maureen kelly has learned that the young man grew up on the peninsula.and attended high school in belmont. she spoke with his friends and acquaintances who say they are shocked by the >> i never thought that something like this would happen. >> he stated that he used to be friends with him. they both attended middle school together in a recent graduate from high school together. >> he always had good grades. he had a high gpa.

he always talked about how he wanted to be a engineer. they remember him been a quiet kid who hung out with the popular crowd. >> he had previously experimented with home explosives before. a person on facebook stated that he was an old friend and that he was always into things like that. >> a dennis stated that he talked about building robots and not blowing things up. >> i truly feel bad for him. i know this is something that he would not do. i guess this was something that was a dumb. >>

a birthday celebration ended in tragedy after the birthday girl's boyfriend is killed. it happened at a home on the foothills of east san jose. lowell baker lives next door. he says has a good relationship with the family. they had told him the party would be happening. baker says the party was peaceful until around 1:30 in the morning. that's when a fight broke out on the lawn. the birthday girl's mother told baker that her daughter's boyfriend was stabbed and killed. >> the bore friends went out to break it up. they started to argue. that is when it happened. >> investigators have yet to name a suspect or makean arrest. in the meantime, the family is asking for their privacy. >> the first grade benicia teacher accused of lacing food with marijuana at a potluck will be in court today. teresa badger is facing three felony counts of poisoning after allegedly bringing laced food to a

collegue's party. police say, after eating, a number of people felt they were under the influence of drugs. two people ended up in the hospital badger is out on bail. a substitute teacher has replaced badger at matthew turner elementary. >> coming up on the kron four morning news-- the mall of columbia reopens more than 48 hours after a shooting leaves three people dead. we'll have the latest on police's investigation of who the suspected gunman was and his motives. line >> plus-- an outbreak sickens 300 passngers and crew members who set sail from new jersey for a 10- day cruise. why the centers for disease control and prevention forced the ship to dock over the weekend. >> and the wintery snow continues to hit the central and east coasts. we'll show amazing video of a blizzard caught on camera in north dakota.

>> santa cruz officials have identified a boogie boarder who died after powerful waves threw him against the rocks. 47-year-old james zenk of mountain view-- was boogie boarding friday at a popular surfing spot near lighthouse point. zenk was out in the ocean despite the high surf warning.and was then critically injured trapped by a large rock. it took two groups of rescue swimmers to pull out the zenk out of the water. who was unconscious when swimmers reached him. the 47-year-old was taken to the hospital where he died. fire officials are urging people to be aware of the rough ocean conditions prior >> a man is recovering after being shot in a jack in the box parking lot in antioch yesterday. police responded to the scene at around 4 pm and found the victim inside a vehicle.

he was suffering from what looked like multiple gunshot wounds. he was transported to the hospital.his condition has not yet been released. the suspect fled the scene on foot and no weapon has been found. police are still investigating the incident. >> a suspect is behind bars this morning for allegedly being involved in a shooting in a pleasanton bar. 21 year old jason landes- caballero was arrested sunday afternoon.after police found evidence related to the crimes at his home. police also say caballero has methamphetamine on him during the arrest. meantime a man is recovering after the shooting at redcoats pub. witnesses say the suspect was pacing inside the bar when he pulled out a handgun and fired several shots at the ceiling. most of the bullets caused damage to the roof, but one struck the patron. police are still trying to make sense of the shootings at a maryland mall that left three people dead.including the gunman. the mall is set to reopen later today. andrew spencer has the story.

>> two days after the shooting left three people dead at a busy mall in columbia, maryland, employees were scheduled to go back to work. line"we may never quite be back to 100% normal, but we are a resilient community." >> brianna benlolo and tyler johnson both worked at a zumeiz skate shop at the mall, where a gunman ended both of their lives on saturday. benlolo was the mother of a young son. johnson sat on the board at serenity center, working with people struggling with drug addiction. >> ".and he made a difference. this is so unbelievable." >> johnson's aunt says some of the people he helped stopped by to thank the family >> "he's teaching other people not to give up, and so he's taught us not to give up either." >> as to what connection he and benlolo might have had to the gunman, neither johnson's family nor police can say for sure. >> "we're just as confused as anybody." >> police say 19-year-old

darion marcus aguilar bought a 12-gauge shotgun, last month. this weekend, they say he took a taxi to the mall of columbia and fired that shotgun at least a half-dozen times, killing johnson and benlolo and injuring five other people before turning the gun on himself. police seized computers and other potential evidence in a search of aguilar's home. >> "there is a journal and he does express some general unhappiness with his life, but i really don't have any other information about that now. that's something that we're going to continue to work through." >> .trying to figure out what was going through aguilar's head. i'm andrew spencer, reporting >> we have rain finally in our forecast. i will have details of what to expect later when we continue.

it burned for more than 12 hours. officials shut off the gas.leaving as many as four thousand people without heat in sub-zero temperatures. canadian officials have not said what caused the explosion.but have said they do not think it was >> 300 passengers and crew members are still sick after their 10 day cruise set sail from new jersey on tuesday. tests are being conducted on samples taken on a cruise ship. the passengers and crew members have come down with a gastrointestinal illness. the centers for disease control and prevention boarded the ship while docked in the virgin islands sunday,-- to investigate the outbreak. the cruise line ended the 10-day trip yesterday. >> a california pastor is in hot water. after being arrested for the second time this month. mark lewis is the pastor of fellowship baptist church in vacaville. police say he was first arrested on january 9-th along with three others accused of throwing a molotov cocktail into a

>> welcome back. as of sunday-- it will now cost you 49 cents to mail a letter. this is the largest increase in postage prices for consumers in more than a decade. last month, the postal service gave the o-k to raise prices to keep up with inflation and recoup losses from the financial crisis. mailing a post card will also go up to 34 cents, a one-cent increase. >> many u.s. businesses say they expect their companies to do better this year, but that doesn't mean they'll be stepping up hiring. forty percent of businesses say they saw stronger sales in the final months of last year. companies expect to raise prices by 5 percent this year.

highway 24. >> developing story of oakland where the search continues for a 14 year-old boy who is accused of shooting and killing his 17 year-old sister. will tran is like at the oakland police department this morning with the latest on the case. >> here is a picture of the sister. she is the mother of a three year-old todd. she died at the same and here is video of the st. in downtown oakland. according to the police department they believed that the brother, 14 year old shot her over a dispute or laundry. they stated that she bleached some of his clothes and that led to him shooting and killing her. then, he

to be a reminder of how she died. >> she must have not heard the flashing warning light spread >> bright balloons were released in the air after her service. safety was there in everyone's mind. those low tar tried to move forward but they will not forget the girl that was left on line. maligned >> a woman is hospitalized after being rescued from beneath a bart train. bart police say it happened just after 5:30 last night at san francisco's embarcadero station. police helped move the woman from the tracks to the platform before she was taken to the hospital. the investigation caused major bart delays for about an hour. but all trains have resumed regular service. bart police left the scene and did not find any indication of foul play. the person's condition has not been released at this time.

district might finally tap the keg. continued dry weather would cause shortages allowing the east bay mud to take an emergency supply of sacramento river water. the supply would be taken from a nine- hundred- million-dollar delivery project that was completed three years ago. officials say the supply could ease shortages and ward off mandatory rationing for 1-point- 3 million residents in contra costa and alameda counties. but the drought relief would come at a price-- a temporary six-dollar increase in water bills per month, per household. this increase would cover pumping and treatment costs. >> the water district staff will present a water supply update at a board meeting on tuesday at 1:15 p.m. at district headquarters. >> the best chance for rain will be on wednesday night heading into the sunday--
