and how much rain is expected today is chief meteorologist jacqueline bennett. >>jacqueline: the morning. we're certainly seeing a lot of rain up there this morning. moderate rain for much of the north bay just as we expected in uc office am until coastline area of moderate rainfall ready to move on them. st. pretty heavy rainfall right of the bay bridge. we just looked at the toll plaza. rainfall rates coming up at about a 10th of an inch of rain per hour. over at the embarcadero we are scene about a 10th of an edge over here as well. all this rain said the office until coast line. ready to move along the coast and to the peninsula. the moderate right will be spreading throughout the bay area for a few hours. some of the rate rainfall is more accessible in the north bay. we do have a flood advisory in effect for portions of the north bay. is to

highlight it here on your screen. we are expecting content on the roadways. we definitely want to use caution if you're heading out this morning. if we're going to be seen a lot more rain today and tomorrow. you are going to want to miss your rainfall totals three of the coming up in just a couple of minutes. allied >>:continuing our team coverage of the wet weather is kron four's mike pelton, who is live in walnut creek this morning. mike? we are getting a little bit of a break here in walnut creek. we are expecting to see a much heavier fall in the next 90 minutes or so. so far this month have as in any major accidents due to the rain but the chp has been responded to a lot of minor collisions including this one here around 530 this morning. at westbound eye 80 on chemistry. if it involved a postal truck. another truck hydroplaned and collided with a big rig. in addition down several lanes while officers cleared

"more grade, it changes tremendously to compact snow and ice and it's pretty bad all the way to the top." "yep, i've plowed through 12 inches of snow, throwing it 15 feet on both sides, without chains." i-80 was a traffic nightmare, with an assembly line of brake lights. if you are headed to tahoe

it happened last night around eleven, just north of brokaw road. the c-h-p says that several cars were involved in the crash. a person was seen laying in the roadway, but it's unclear if that person was ejected from a car or a pedestrian. that person was pronounced dead at the scene. all lanes were reopened around one a-m. okland police investigating what appears to be a home invasion homicide. the body of an elderly woman was found bound and gagged in her fruitvale apartment last night. her body was discovered during a welfare check around 2:30 yesterday afternoon. a male relative was also found injured in the same

developing news out of turkey: anti-terrorism police are questioning the ukrainian man who reportedly tried to hijack a turkey-bound flight. officials say "artem hozlov" claimed he had a bomb. and tried to divert a pegasus airlines flight to sochi, russia as the olympics began. turkish media say police are trying to figure out if hozlov has links to any terror groups. new information out of colorado where two women were found dead near irrigation canals. police are now saying they found a dead male inside of the apartment where the murder suspect was said to be hiding out. authorities have not been able to identify the body. officers had surrounded the apartment after a day-long hunt for cimmeron johns, who is suspected of killing the two women.

police say johns kidnapped his estranged wife alisha johns and alisha's mother, sherri pachello. johns has a lengthy rap sheet, with arrests ranging from domestic violence to dui to forcible entry. a tennessee couple did not enter a plea, in their first court appearance friday.they are charged in the death of the man's five- year-old daughter. police say randall vaughn and his wife mary forced the child to drink water and soda for at least an hour as punishment. his daughter alexa linboom was found unresponsive and later died. an autopsy ruled that her death was caused by fluid intoxication. apparently, the large amount of water and soda she was forced to drink caused her brain to swell. if convicted, the couple

court documents say officers discovered a prosthetic pregnancy device , baby clothes and a stroller in smith's car. authorities say the suspect had pretended to be pregnant prior to the kidnapping. to take it easy. this rain is in tents through the north bay. we're also seeing some heavy falls through san francisco right over the entrance of the bay bridge near the coast line as well. closer look and san francisco where we are seeing rainfall totals. about a 10th of an inch of an rain so every hour. we also have a flood advisory in effect for portions of the bay area. chp reports pontine on the roadways. you definitely want to be careful. this in effect of the cloud cover you see here as a stream to the bay area will continue to bring up rain through today and tomorrow. rainfall totals so far have been pretty good in places like napa. over 3 in.

rainfall totals were talking several inches of rain this weekend. the valley is largely between 1 and 3 in. and the north bay and up to 5 in. of rain in some isolated spots for the hills. for the hills. as for the sierra we are still seen snow but the area of some of his dwindling down because arsenal levels are rising. this started at 5,000 ft. yesterday. additional accumulation none at lake level. we're going to see of to a flood of new snow at 8,000 ft. through the morning. ask your extended forecast this is one big storm we are going to be seen out there today. will be seen the rain continued into tomorrow as well. as we head into monday and tuesday finally some drier conditions. we are going to be seen several inches of rain when it's all said and done. >>: thanks so much

jacqueline. >>: president obama is coming to california next week for a first hand look at this historic drought. he's set to visit fresno next friday. he will talk about how the federal government will address the drought in the san joaquin valley. the fresno bee reports the white house plans to release more details about the president's trip soon. the president's trip will be his first to fresno. it's been over a week since a drone crashed into the pacific ocean. now, homeland security is back to flying the aircraft along the country's borders. investigators say the drone crashed due to a generator failure. the department is making mechanical upgrades to the remaining drones in the fleet to avoid future malfunctions.

the crashed aircraft was one of 10 drones used by the government to patrol the borders from the air. the cost may have gone down, but the high speed rail construction will still take the same amount of time to complete. this is the word from the california high speed rail authority. a new forecast slightly lowers the 68-billion dollar price tag, but the construction timeline remains the same. the updated business plan also estimates the system will have more riders taking short trips than previously forecast. fewer travelers means less revenue. traffic and other factors show revenue could range

mike poulter reporting live from walnut creek. thank you. >>: the heavier rainfall. snow in the sierra -- and the struggle to "chain up". plus the difficult driving conditions that have spawned crash after crash. snow in the sierra is a common site in february. but as dry as its been lately, all the moisture is impressive rain turned to snow causing many to chain up 15 miles before chain controls were required. plow drivers will be working around the clock to clear the roads of snow.

a bay area family, on their way back to san jose from reno-- took the opportunity to play in the snow for the first time. while it was fun for many stopping at cisco grove, conditions quickly got worse going up the hill. at 30 mile per hour, traffic crawled passed chain controls. and for the most part caltrains officals say motorists have been prepared. and if you are planning to head to tahoe to take advantage of the snowfall, stick with the kron four weekend news. coming up in about an hour, we'll be speaking with northstar resort to see how much snow has fallen overnight. the rain may be a contributing factor in

concord as a propane truck slides off the road and hits a tree. it happened early yesterday evening along highway- 242, near grant street. the tree fell on top of the truck after it was hit. luckily, the propane tank was empty at the time, and the driver was able to escape without injury. c-h-p officers on the scene have a warning for those traveling this rainy weekend. one firefighter was injured trying to cut the tree away from the truck. officers on scene say, he is okay but is suffering from broken ribs.

shocking news for the cal community. as a member of the football team -- defensive lineman ted agu -- passes away while working out with teammates. the cause of death is still unknown at this time. the team doctor says trainers noticed agu struggling during a supervised practice near cal's football stadium. they made him stop running and began trying to hydrate him. he was then transported to the team's medical facility. on the way, he became unresponsive. he died shortly after being taken to the emergency room at alta bates medical

center in berkely. agu majored in public health. coach sonny dykes says agu came to cal as a walk on, but earned a football scholarship. the coronor's report into the exact cause of death is expected within six to eight weeks. the deadly flu season continues to claim lives in the bay area. we've learned of seven new fatalities. the santa clara county health department reported four people died -- all between the ages of 33 and 56 years old. two of them died from "swine flu." alameda county reported an additional case. and solano county reported two more. the death toll. now at 42. flu season runs through march.

in a nearly 2-thousand word open letter, woody allen defends himself against claims that he molested his adoptive daughter dylan farrow 21 years ago. allen's response was published by the new york times. it comes nearly a week after the times released an open letter from dylan farrow in which she claimed that allen sexually assaulted her. dylan farrow didn't specify allen's actions, but described other abusive behavior. allen wrote in the times, "of course, i did not molest dylan." dylan farrow is calling allen's op-ed a rash of lies. a couple of otters at the sochi aquarium are said to have the gift of prophecy. harry and ashley successfully predicted the results of continental hockey league and european figure ice skating competitions. here's how they do it.

zookeepers throw plastic rings with the names of competing teams into the pool and see which one is picked up and carried out of water by the otters. a breeder threw a blue and a yellow ring into the water. these represented china and south korea respectively in the women's 500-meter speed skating event at the sochi olympics. after much deliberation, harry left both rings in the water. this seems to mean it will be a close competition.

in what is likely to be the biggest february snowstorm to hit the portland, oregon region since 1996. a local meteorologist predicts the storm will end up dropping between five and 10 inches of snow on the eye-5 corridor and the portland area. although the snow is expected to end today-- freezing rain arrives on sunday, with single digit wind chills. and these skiiers in portland are enjoying the snow. check out these cross country skiers, trekking through the streets of portland, oregon friday. a smaller group of skiers did the same thing during the city's big snowstorm back in 2008. the storm struck and then to

many were stopping by to pick up free sandbags at the city's corporation yard on pacific boulevard. each person is allowed to take up to 10-bags. and in san rafael, they are also taking precautions. the city put out a pile of sand. so residents could fill up their own sand bags. to protect their homes or businesses from flooding.

city officials say the sand pile is almost gone. the 17-year-old oakland girl who was shot to death in her apartment. was remembered at a funeral friday. the shooting happened on january 23rd. police say, it started as a fight between justice toliver and her younger brother. over laundry. the 14-year-old brother is now charged in juvenile court, with her murder. in an agreement with the court, he was allowed to attend the memorial. he court, he was allowed to attend the memorial. he showed up earlier in the

hundreds are expected to attend the sixth annual gain prevention summit san jose today. the event is open to the public and will include workshops in the resource fair. the workshops include material meant specifically for parents, police and teams. the summit will run from a 30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at mount pleasant high school on like a row. a man is behind bars for a hit- and-run and burlingame. that accident happened last month when diego valle
