>> this morning on the kron 4 morning news. rain and lots of it. the latest in a series of winter storms packs a punch here's a live look at storm tracker four, tracking the rain around the bay area. >> plus-- these series of storms are causing problems in the bay area-- from flooded streets to clogged drains. we'll tell you which areas were hit hard. >> and with heavy rains hitting the bay area-- travelers flying in and out of s-f-o experienced nightmares over the weekend. we'll tell you if the weather is impacting your travels this morning the kron 4 morning news starts right now. >> good morning. it is monday, february 10th.

i'm james fletcher. >> and im anny hong >> we're not saying anything on storm tracker 4. rain that is falling is the to much. you will probably encounter righwhat roadways. satellite and radar shows that we had pretty impressive amounts. fairfield saw up to 12 in. of rain. here is a look at future cast 4. by 5:00 p.m. just cloud cover and we may see a few scattered out sprinkles. into the afternoon we are talking drier conditions and the

leader not sunshine. as we highlight some of the rainfall totals over the past five days we received almost 9 in. of rain. over 6 in. for santa rosa. san francisco received 3 in.. some spots receive more rain. it is definitely a drop in the bucket in terms of the drops status. here is a look picture 7 day around the bay it looks like the showers are going to move out of here. partly cloudy conditions will carry us into the next couple of days as some of calls by thursday and ran to the north on friday. saturday and sunday looks to be a little unsettled but nothing like what we experience to this weekend. >> the traffic around the bay, we do have one incident. skyline boulevard where it meets highway 85.

there's a tree that is down blocking lanes. you will have to find another alternate route if that is your commute. >> let's take a live look at the richmond center fell bridge. no cars are in camera shot so is very light. >> and the rain is expected to continue today. many people around the bay area are making sure they are ready if flooding happens. over the weekend mill valley received more then 9 inches of rain streets were flooded, and mud sides were a concern. some businesss in the area had to close on saturday because they just could notke ep the water out. but yesterday many business owners were able to open back up becuase the water in the area had come down. >> these series of storms causing problems on san francisco city streets as well. the city's department of public works has been out

clearing drains to prevent flooding. this is video of one crew sweeping leaves and debris out of a few gutters at 26th street and san jose avenue. a department spokesperson says the city has not experienced as much flooding as it has in the past. but crews will continue working 24 hours a day until the weather clears. line >> heavy rain makes for treacherous driving conditions. daytime lights on cars are designed to make us safer. but sometimes they can make driving more dangerous. those lights help see what's in front of you, but drivers behind you are left in the dark. take a look at these two cars that are side by side. the one on the left had their headlights on. the one on the right had only their daytime running lights on. they're much harder to see from behind. >> the violation from having this as a moving violation that carries points. >> police are on the lookout for offending drivers.

it's also important to note that if you get rear ended, but only have your daytime running lights on, you could be found at fault. >> weather proved to be a nightmare for travelers this weekend. thanks to the wind and rain.many flights were delayed or grounded. an airport spokesperson says about 120 arriving and departing flights were cancelled. thankfully, it was a slower day than usual at s-f-o. there were about 20-thousand fewer passengers flying in and out compared to what would be considered a busy day. however.many passengers were still upset. line my flight was delayed for about two hours. it is very frustrating. >> things are expected to run a lot smoother today. two flights are cancelled going out of s-f-o and nine flights going in. several flights are delayed.but nothing compared with yesterday as of yet. it's important to check with your airline before you arrive at the airport to make sure your flight is operating as scheduled. >> we want to see what it's looking like in your community. send us your photos of the

>> welcome back. an alleged home invasion robbery has left one man dead and another woman injured in hayward. police say sunday night, a male victim reported multiple people entered his western boulevard home. the victim told police he believed he was being robbed. authorities say the victim shot the male suspect and killed him. the victim also shot and police are still >> an alleged pimp is in custody after a shooting over a prostitution deal. this happened saturday night in rohnert park. police arrested christopher jerome roberson after he fled the shooting scene at the rodeway inn. authorities were given a vehicle description and able to stop roberson near lakeville highway in petaluma. a female passenger identified as a prostitute was also arrested. police say roberson shot at another man in the motel parking lot. roberson missed the victim, but shattered the victim's car window. police arrested roberson was arrested for burglary, pimping, brandishing a firearm, reckless discharge of a firearm and for possession of cocaine.

>> police are trying to figure out what caused a car to go down an embankment killing the driver over the weekend in mill valley. the marin county sheriff's search and rescue team was called sunday morning to help find the driver of a black jeep cherokee that had traveled about 50 feet down an embankment in the 100 block of greenwood way the rescue team searched the heavily wooded hillside and found a man deceased further down the embankment, >> two men have been rescued after being stranded at santa rosa creek over the weekend. the men were stuck in the middle of the creek before six last night. a jogger on the santa rosa creek trail had heard the men call for help. the men had launched a raft into one of the tributaries of the creek. fire personnel located the men 25 to 30 feet away from the creek bank, it is unclear exactly where the men launched the raft, at what time and what type of boat they used, he said. >> a boxing promoter says he is calling off a match

>> welcome back. the east is also being hit by winter storms. thousands of residents are returning home in philadelphia as power is being restored to their homes. an ice storm caused trees and power lines to fall earlier this week, knocking out power to nearly half a million people. this is video from that storm. over the weekend about 78- thousand were without power. the utility company says weakened tress and limbs continue to fall, creating new obstacles. the company expects power to be restored to everyone by today. >> and it just keeps coming down in the pacific northwest -- as snow continued to fall over the weekend. meteorologists say snow could fall through today in portland. that's made travelling tough for both drivers and pedestrians. but some are taking things in stride. many took their sleds and skis to the streets and tried to make the best of it.

>> residents in the deep south are bracing themselves for another round of snow and a winter storm watch is in effect for the atlanta area. crews will start treating the roads ahead of the storm which is expected to hit tomorrow. it was just two weeks ago, when atlanta and other cities in the region were paralyzed by a couple of inches of snow, creating gridlock on the highway and thousands of cars abandoned. >> let's find out more about the forecast. >> we may see a few sprinkles for the day before the most part we will be dry for the next couple of days. if your headed out you will encounter wet roads. we are dry in the north bay and san francisco is also dry up. you have a few scattered showers on storm tracker 4 for those of you in the

south. a lot of this is moving out. >> here is a look as satellite and radar. this storm continues to move out in the winter weather advisory expired at 4:00 a.m. this morning. most of us are waking up with 50s. >> we are anticipating mostly sunny skies. livermore will have a high of 62 degrees. here is your 7 day around the bay. tomorrow is going to be a dry one and we will see a mixture of sun and clouds. thursday is looking to be dry in fact we may encounter upper 60s and we may see a slight rain chance for the weekend. any thing that we see this week will be nothing compared to what we saw over the weekend. quickly looking at some of the bridges around the bay. here is a live look the bay bridge toll plaza. traffic

reporting >> today, new york city's new mayor delivers his vision in his first state of the city address. mayor bill de blasio is expected to highlight his big goal to fight the city's widening income gap. that likely includes another push to raise taxes on the wealthy to help fund universal pre-kindergarten. de blasio also expected to call for improvements to the police department and creating more affordable housing. >> financial challenges ahead for the state's new health insurance exchange, covered california. the agency is setting aside nearly 200 million dollars to fight off projected budget shortfalls. partly to blame because of uncertainty around signups. which are key to the program's success. covered california counted 625-thousand health care enrollments through mid- january. the most of any state. a state audit last summer labeled the agency "high- risk" because of the difficulty projecting future enrollments. >> the u.s. embassy in

guyana is telling americans planning to fly from the south american county to the u.s. to make alternative travel arrangements through wednesday. . officials say they've received "unconfirmed threat information" about caribbean airline's flights from guyana to the u.s. they're telling americans to avoid using the carrier. guyana-us-security warning >> for a second time, north korea has canceled its invitation for a senior u.s. envoy to visit the country to discuss the possible release of american kenneth bae, bae has been held for more than a year. the cancellation is an apparent protest of upcoming annual military drills between the u.s. and south korea. north korea also claims that u.s. b-52 bombers staged drills near the korean peninsula. united states-nkorea-jailed american nkorea rescinds invitation to us envoy

>> berlin set tourism records in 2013. the federal statistical office credits their club scene and rhine valley for nearly 411-million overnight stays. most of the travelers were from within germany. guests from outside germany rose 4 percent from 2012. >> toyota says it will stop making cars in australia by the end of 2017, spelling a final blow to auto manufacturing in the country. car companies say high production costs and tough competition have made the business financially unviable in australia. toyota's announcement monday means the loss of around 2,500 jobs. it comes just two months after general motors co. announced that it would be ending production in australia by 2017. ford motor co. announced in may that it was ending production in the country in 2016. toyota said its decision was based on a combination of factors including the high australian dollar, the high cost of manufacturing and competition. >> here is a live look

>> welcome back. china is making a plan for its 2022 winter olympic bid. beijing is currently facing a number of challenges, such as air quality, traffic jams and a lack of adequate winter sports facilities.

this is video of some smog in china. the vice president of the chinese olympic committee.however. says they will tackle these problems. he cites doing research on the best time to hold the olympics in terms of air quality conditions and temperature. china first announced its bid in november. >> the copenhagen zoo is facing a backlash after killing a healthy giraffe and feeding it to their lions over the weekend. an online petition begged for the zoo to save the animal. you can see here the 2- year-old giraffe being fed to the lions the display happened in front of an audience. including children. the director says the animal had to be killed to avoid inbreeding. >> be careful how you play with cats. one bite from your feline friend could put you in the hospital. a mayo clinic study shows 1 in 3 people with a cat bite are hospitalized. the most common cat bite victims are middle-age women.

impressive rain shower that rolled through. mostly cloudy conditions by tomorrow. the chance of rain as we head into the middle of next week. here is a look at your 7 day around the bay. sun and assaults are on tap for tomorrow. the next system that will push through will go as far south. it will be dry by thursday and unsettled weather could carry us into the weekend. that is a look at the weather, we do not have any hot spots to talk about. >> traffic is still moving pretty well the san mattel bridge is problem free and your drive time is 12 to 13 minutes. the peninsula is smooth and easy and there is green on the roadway sensors.

>> one of the hardest-hit areas for rain arrived in the north bay. kron4 jackie sissel joins us live from mill valley. >> they received about 8 in. of rain. when this happened, you know what is to do. here is video from yesterday. basically, a storm drain was overwhelmed. when you get that much water the storm drains just cannot handle this. they start to flood into businesses. there are about five or six businesses, one of them is a bar, the other is a hair salon. it has been repeated all over the bay area. the north bay received a lot

rain and once these get overwhelmed, and they start to back up and that is when the san beck's,. the good news is that they are used to this so they know what to do and is still does not make it any better. i know that all of us was hoping for a little bit of rain and we receive more than just a little bit. we received a lot. there is a police officer going by and there are still puddles outside. they have the sandbags out just in case. >> we may see more storms. keep your fingers crossed. >> the series of storms cost problems once and francisco city streets as well. the state department of public works has been out clearing drains to prevent flooding.

>> san jose police are investigating an officer involved shooting, a carjacking and a home invasion that all happened within blocks of each other early sunday morning. kron4 maureen kelly reports, please are trying to determine if all of these incidents are connected. >> officers followed this gentlemen ed and they attempted to stop him and put him in custody when officer feared for his safety and fired his weapon. the suspect was struck and he was transported to a local hospital. we did confirm that there was a shotgun in his possession, inside the car. >> the police would not state what he did the people

a recent phone scam where callers pretend to be from p-g and -e. police officials say they've received reports of fraud where callers claim to be from p-g- and e.and inform victim's of "deliquent balances". according to police. the caller threatens to shut off the victim's electricity unless they provide the serial number of a pre-paid money card. police say callers seemed to target people who don't speak english and also threatened arrest or deportation. linethe u-s grabbed a gold and a bronze in the sochi olympics. right now they're in fourth place. while norway is in the lead snowboarder jamie anderson won the gold medal in women's slopestyle. the u-s figure skating team earned the bronze medal. while russia got the gold. the stand-out skaters on the and charlie white. they won both the short and free dance competitions. >> missouri all-american player michael sam says he's gay. the miz-zou athlete has been projected to be a mid-round n-f-l draft pick. sam opened up in an interviews with e-s-p-n and the new york times. he wanted the public to know

the day. for most, it comes from soda, energy drinks, tea or coffee. the rate didn't budge much over a decade, although soda use declined and energy drinks became an increasingly common source. that's according to a government analysis of national health surveys from 1999 through 2010. the national health survey shows even most pre- schoolers consume some caffeinated products. but young kids' overall caffeine intake fell over the last decade. the government analysis is the first to examine recent national trends in caffeine among children and young adults. >> facebook's mark zuckerberg and his wife priscilla chan are among the most generous american philanthropists in 2013. the chronicle of philanthropy has put out its latest list of the top 50 contributors. the magazine says the zuckerbergs donated 18 million shares of facebook stock, valued at more than $970 million. and all 50 contributors made donations last year totaling $7.7 billion, plus pledges of $2.9 billion more.
