for this car and tried to figure out how this could have happened and where the occupants are located this all happened after witnesses sought a man get into that car with a knife with two people inside the vehicle, an elderly man in 13 year old girl. after that, they took off. they did not know where they are at the moment. there are still investigating witnesses at the scene which occupy used to not know the suspect. we have the information that the suspect is armed with a knife so the primary focus is locating the vehicle and finding the occupants. we have the helicopters for their support and we have called in search teams with cal highway service is an

with more details we will bring them to you live kron4 news >> reporter: once word came out that one of the victims in this carjacking. and kidnapping was a 13 year old girl. oakland police issued an amber alert. that triggered public alert system. that includes lighting up the highway signs. asking drivers to be on the look out. >> reporter:in this case for a red infinity suv. license plate. 6-j-f-m-6-4- 8 the highway signs were lit up in the bay area only. but the amber alert system can expaned to statewide if needed. the amber alert also lit up cell phones. >> reporter:phones enabled with the wireless emergency alert system automatically receive these alerts. it sends out that distinct beeping tone. >> reporter:this alert feature on cell phones was instituted last year. it doesn't go off often. so some users today were caught by surprise. if you do have the system. it doesn't just send out amber alerts. it will also sound off if there is an imminent threat.
