me officer law helped him. >> even though you're the rookie, he wouldn't let you drown yourself in paperwork. he helped you out. >> reporter: officer law is also remembered as a stand -up guy who loveded sports and fitness and is the type of officer you'd want responding to your call. as hard as this law is on the fellow officers, his family needs love and support. >> we want to make sure all of that is taken care of. >> reporter: he leaves behind a wife and 3 children. he was 34 years old. >> reporter: and officer wan is being remembered by his colleagues in the south bay. gonzalez was assigned to the san jose office for much of 2010

and part of 2011. his partner was officer ross lee who had just completed his training. lee says he was his mentor and the 2 worked side by side often working in the same patrol car. we asked officer lee to share what he remembers. >> he was a great worker. very knowledgeable and smart. i remember personally learning some of the things from him that i took from him, the ability to respond to a scene or any type of question that slow -- investigation. really took some time to develop the information instead of jumping to conclusions. he was very calm. never saw him lose his temper. just a good guy all around.

>> reporter: officer lee stayed on in san jose and work ed there today while his partner went to the central valley. governor jerry brown issued this statement: he and his wife extend their deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues as they mourn the loss of this public servants. developing tonight, we're learning more about a shooting outside the westfield mall in san francisco. a gunman opened fire on the street last night. scott, police say this was a targeted shooting, but i'm imagining the shoppers are very scared about this. >> reporter: that shooter is still on the loose tonight. this happened at a very busy section of market street right in front of the mall and also

right in front of the powell street bart station. there were a lot of people here when it happened. let me show you last night around 7:00 in the evening. 2 men jumped out of the car, 1 man walked up to the victim shooting him multiple times. witnesses tell me everybody scattered once those gunshots went off. the man collapsed on the bart platform. people we talked to were very shaken up. >> i heard 2 gunshots just, boom, boom. and i literally just walked by there 30 seconds prior. and everyone just started running so i ran off. >> reporter: so a very busy area for something like this to happened. i have seen an increased police presence today just in the short time i've been out here. i can tell you that

the victim is expected to survive. at first it appeared to be a fatal hit and run accident. it's now being investigated as the 7th homicide so far this year in san jose. the suspect who is to blame remains at large. rob reports that the killing resulted from a brawl between 2 groups of young men in the middle of a busy street. >> he was a good guy. he was so young and had so much life still to live. >> reporter: she fought back heres as she added flowers to a memorial for her cousin. eric, the apparent victim of a hit and run here on snail avenue just south of capital expressway. >> they started stabbing and they ran him over. when the fire engines got here, they tried to resuscitate him. he

was gone. >> reporter: the killing resulted from a moving brawl that spilled onto the streets after 2 groups of people were evicted by security from a flee market about a block away. >> those 2 groups engaged in physical violence. some vehicles were contained, some individuals got out of the vehicles and a fight ensued. >> reporter: 2 other people were later treated at the hospital. 1 was stabbed. the other hit by a car. police say neither is considered a suspect at this time. his cousin says eric leaves behind a wife and a daughter. >> it's a tragedy. nobody deserves to die that way. we loved him and we hope that justice is served for him because this is not right. >> reporter: so far police say

moved it is. happening now, a rash of burglaries in san francisco has people concerned in the richmond district. more than a dozen took place last week. residents say this is an old problem that needs attention. theresa reports police say they are planning to address the situation. >> reporter: police are telling residents to beware. here's why. take a look at this picture. you can see the window smashed in. police say as many as 20 cars were broken into last week alone. a resident sent this picture into kron4 news. thieves stole mostly personal items. police say that they're

reminding people to take everything of value out of a car after parking it. we spoke with one residents who says this crime is nothing new. >> it's been happening for many years. on the south side of fulton on the golden gate park, it's a regular occurrence during the summer and winter. and it's usually at nighttime. if you leave anything in your car that's visible, you're going to get broken into. i have in front of my own house. so to steal a dollar's worth of stuff it costs you $100 to change a window. and not really much police presence out here at all. >> reporter: it would be nice to see more foot patrols and a better police presence? >> it would be nice. i hardly ever see the motorcycle for the

. a teenager facing trial as the craigslist killer in pennsylvania is claiming responsibility for 20 additional murders. at least 1 was california. grant has more. >> reporter: a satanic cult and a trail of murders. the story broke in the local newspaper in rural pennsylvania. 19-year-old miranda barbour made her revelations in an interview. miranda barbour and her husband are charged with stabbing to death a 42-year-old man they lured to this spot. she said she did it just so they could kill someone together. she confessed to the murder and many more, so many that after 22, she stopped counting. >> i said, what's the number? she said under 100. >> reportere

students at skyline high school didn't have to go to school today, and they will not have to go tomorrow either. late this afternoon, there was an emergency closure of the campus tomorrow so that repairs can be made to a natural gasline. no one was injured in the incident and they expect to have the work completed tomorrow. it will be back to school as normal on wednesday. police want to know who shot a 16-year-old girl to death over the weekend. she died early saturday morning. friends and families are remembering her with a memorial at the scene of the crime. investigators are trying to find witnesses and so far they have no detailss. we will have more tonight at 6:00. in santa rosa, demonstrates took to the streets demanding justice for andy lopez.

about 100 people participated organized by the group called andy's youth. they want the district attorney to bring criminal charges against the sheriff for the october fatal shooting of lopez. they also want the police department to release its report on the shooting. lopez was holding a replica ak47. the body found in the oakland hills was a white woman in her 40s, but she has not been identified. someone reported the discovery on saturday morning in redwood regional park. coming up, we have reaction from the golden gate bridge district after reports that the district has made millions in fines from the new electronic polling system. and then it's not too late this holiday to catch a film.

the only bay area bridge which is now all electronic, and tonight bridge officials are denying reports of a financial windfall from all of the fines it collects. >> reporter: every day about 58,000 cars pass through the toll plaza. those without fast track get a bill in the mail. if they don't pay, they are fined. mary curry says those fines add about a million dollars to the bridge toll revenue. >> at the end of the year we're expecting to see about 1 or 2% to be from toll violations. the program for toll violations is set up to cover the real violators. oit oitsz not set up to make money. it's set up to cover those that truly violate. >> reporter: drivers without fast track have 21 days to pay the $6 toll, then you get a fine of $25 plus the toll.

grant beguns our team coverage tonight. what led to the deadly crash. >> reporter: the officers were responding to this scene in the central valley along highway 99 20 miles south of fresno. this was just before 6:00 a.m. at least 1 of the people in the accidents was on the roadway. the cruiser swerved off the road. >> they took action to avoid striking the parties from the collision. they lost control of the vehicle, struck the guard rail and crashed. both officers received fatal injuries. >> reporter: it's not clear how fast the chp cruiser was traveling when it lost control. >> reporter: and officers in oakland are also remembering the other officer who lost his life today. brian law got his start

at the oakland office. he was 34-year-old. he leaves behind a wife and young children. he transferred to the fresno office a year ago to be closer to his family. he's being remembered as a stand-up guy who loved sports and fitness. >> it has indeed been a dark day for the chp across california where officer juan gonzalez spent his career. i spoke with officer ross lee who was the partner here including 6 months the 2 of them spent sharing the same vehicle at times. officer lee calling him a true professional. >> i would consider him to be an officer that i looked up to. i found him very knowledgeable. really approachable. really nice guy. i remember he always came to work with a smile on his

. tonight the law enforcement family is mourning the loss of brian law and juan gonzalez. the chp officers were responding to a crash scene around 6:00 a.m. today near frezny when they -- fresno when they crashed and were killed. this is 20 miles south of fresno. a person involved in the crash was in the roadway and the officers swerved to avoid the person and crashed themselves. both officers have bay area ties. this is kron4 news. >> one of the officers killed in the line of duty today started here at the oakland office. brian law is being remembered as a great guy who would do anything to help

car's window has been smashed in. there is glass all over. as many as 20 cars were broken in to last week alone. a resident sent this picture. police say they're increasing patrols and they're going to have a community meeting on tuesday night to talk about their strategy to crack down on this crime. investigators spent the day inside this house collecting evidence. an elderly woman was found dead on sunday afternoon. her daughter is behind bars in connection with the crime. she confessed to killing her mother. here in san pablo, almost 3 years since a landslide damages this community. this is video from back in march 2011.
