san francisco was at 59 degrees. concord is the coolest spot at 49 degrees. livermore is looking at 56 degrees. the storm system 1 on very quickly yesterday morning and then we saw all of that sunshine. it felt really nice. the temperatures were in the mid 60's with a few low 70's today. the highs for today in san jose will be 72 degrees and 73 for sunnyvale. paul also is looking at laura's 70's. >> the temperatures will continue to climb. we are talking mid-70s for friday. we will get even warmer by saturday pushing close 80 degrees. we will see a few low 80 degrees and on sunday, our warmest day our

tester'temperatures will be mid '80s. we will have plenty of sunshine over the next hour or days. >> a quick bridge check. the traffic is light at this hour with no surprise. here is a look at the bay bridge. the traffic is just a few cars and the metering lights are not activated. the richmond san rafael bridge we're looking at no traffic at this hour. i want to mention near milpitas there is an accident report it. and the right shoulder is blocked. traffic is light. >> police are looking for a man they say tried to kidnap a woman on san pablo avenue in berkeley. the victim says she was walking from albany friday night.when she felt she was being followed. police say the man following her grabbed her and

attempted to pull her into a driveway. a person driving by the scene heard her scream. >> during in the incident a passer-by air noticed a female was in distress. she started to haul our horn to distract the mail. >> the victim was not injured. police have not received any other reports of similar crimes in the area at this point. the man is described as a hispanic man in his early 20s. he's said to be between 5-5 and 5-7 with a thin build. >> san francisco police are investigating the possibility that an officer who was shot saturday-- may have been wounded by friendly fire. officer adam shaw was injured during a shooting in the mission district over the weekend. the incident triggered a bay area- wide manhunt and ended with a wild police chase and with the arrest of jeffrey ruano. police say, ruano is a convicted felon. the bullet that hit officer shaw has not been found. and no gun was found on the suspect when he was arrested sunday morning.

ruano is charged with assault with a deadly weapon for trying to run over the officer with his car. he is also facing several other felonies. >> we have not found another weapon. no longe >> the developing story of the missing plane from malaysia. there is still no sign of the plane that vanished friday night. with 239 people on board. but.pictures of the two passengers who were onboard with stolen passports have been released. the first man you see has been identified as a 19- year-old iranian. the second man has not been identified yet. investigators say, the tickets were purchased by an iranian businessman known as "mister ali." the tickets were one way and paid for in cash. both red

flags for terrorist investigators. >> they had some other type old goal. clearly they had some goal, some illegal goal to achieve. whether it is immigration, illegal immigration, committed a crime and were trying to protect their identities. >> the airline says that authorities are still investigating the possibility that the plane might have tried to turn back toward the kuala lumpur airport from where it set off. >> the questions and uncertainty are agonizing for family and friends of people on board. many arrived in kuala lumpur yesterday, most of them coming from beijing. philip wood is one of three americans who's now missing. wood raised his family in north texas before moving to east asia. the 50-year old was an i-b-m executive who recently visited friends and family in the u-s. his brother is coping as best he can.

>> welcome back. one of two men at the center of a cold- case murder investigation, appeared in court monday. david zimmer pleaded not guilty. to charges he murdered his estranged wife cathy zimmer almost 25 years ago. prosecutors allege zimmer profited from his wife's death through insurance payouts and the sale of their house. zimmer's brother, robert, was also arrested and charged. after his d-n-a was found on cathy zimmer's clothing. prosecutors say, it is likely the two brothers could be tried together, as the case moves forward. >> for the second time in less than 30 days.an acid spill

at a company in martinez injures workers. two workers were exposed to sulfuric acid at the tesoro refinery. they were taken to a hospital and treated for burns. back on february 12th. two other workers suffered second degree burns in an acid accident. as for this incident. haz- mat officials says, it apepars to be unrelated to last month's acid spill. >> residents in one concord neighborhood are fed up and fighting back against crime. a simple sign on a telephone pole issues a warning to criminals in the area that residents are watching and they won't be afraid any more. kron-4's alecia reid spoke to some residents who say, this message is the first step in taking back their neighborhood. >> set up homeowners left notes for people facing their neighborhood. that the courts ought to know that they are watching. they will not allow them to invade their lives. >> now, it is getting out of control. >> one of our neighbors down

hours from now before that happens. >> the roads are dry. >> a student leader was fatally shot monday night in the western university city of san cristobal after a long day of street clashes in which venezuelan security forces attacked and dismantled barricades at key intersections, the mayor said. local tv reporter beatriz font said there were unconfirmed reports of at least two others wounded by gunfire after dark in the city of 600,000 people where student-led protests erupted last month and where anti- government unrest has been fiercest. the human rights group provea tweeted that one student was seriously wounded by a bullet. national guardsmen firing tear gas and plastic shotgun pellets had battled protesters all day in residential neighborhoods, font said by phone. the slain student leader, daniel tinoco, was shot in the chest after dark, san cristobal mayor daniel ceballos said via twitter. the opposition politician did not say who might have killed tinoco but tweeted that armed paramilitaries allied with the government known as "colectivos" had battled protesters along with the national guard. maligned in a reversal of fortune, for timour time

>> oscar pistorius is back in court. for the second week of his murder trial. the para-lympic runner faces a pre- meditated murder charge. in the killing of his girlfriend, model reeva steenkamp. pistorius says, he mistook her for an intruder. a pathologist who carried out the autopsy on oscar pistorius' girlfriend says any of three injuries she sustained could have been fatal. pistorius retched repeatedly as details of wounds to reeva steenkamp's skull, chest and arms were recounted in court. the judge has banned both video and audio streaming of the testimony because the details are so graphic. the trial is expected to take at least two more weeks. >> coming up on the kron4 new is. we will tell you why the big pile of homework that your kids bring home every night can actually backfire. we will have that story after the break.

not be all it's cracked up to be. in fact more than two hours of homework a night may actually be counterproductive. stanford researchers found that students in high- achieving communities who spend too much time on homework-- experience more stress, physical health problems, a lack of balance and even alienation from society. scientists looked at more than four-thousand kids from high performing schools throughout california. and while three-point- one hours a night of homework gave them a competitive advantage - it also hindered learning, full engagement and well-being. >> we are leanring that a notorious california serial killer -- may have had multiple plans to try and bust out of prison. richard ramirez. known as the night stalker for his murderous crimes -- was plotting his escape from san quentin state prison. ramirez was found guilty in 13 murders, five attempted murders, 11 sexual assaults, and 14 burglaries.but he was not content to live out his life in san quentin. he had visions of escaping. in 19-93-- officals say after he was escorted out of prison to appear in a san

>> welcome back. we're coming up on 4-30. here are the big stories we're working on for you this morning. berkeley police are looking for a man who tried to kidnap a woman. the woman says friday night, a man followed her while she was walking, grabbed her and tried to pull her into a driveway. someone driving by heard her scream and the suspect fled. >> still no sign of the flight that vanished while it was travelling from malaysia to china over the weekend. investigators are looking into whether there was an attempt to turn around and head back to malaysia. police have also confirmed one of two men using stolen passports on the flight was an iranian seeking asylum. >> and a move that would allow crimea to become a part of russia could be violating ukraine's constitution. a vote is set for march 16th that will allow crimean residents to choose between ukraine or russia. secretary of state john kerry will also be in kiev

>> today marks the third anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that damaged the fukushima daiichi nuclear power plant in japan. demonstrators will gather at 3:00 this afternoon at the japanese consulate on fremont street in san francisco. the group wants the japanese government to permanently shut down all nuclear reactors in the country and evacuate women and children from contaminated areas.

back in the regular season -- he said he didn't know, and that this is all new to him. >> after a 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of eureka.scientists have been closely monitoring the coast for seismic activity. many are wondering if these means bigger quakes are headed for the bay. they say aftershocks have hit the area and reached into oregon. they're expected for the next two weeks. shethe quake happened in what's called the mendocino triple junction. it's where the san andreas fault meets the mendocino fault and the subduction zone. the earthquake occurred on one of those faults. scientists say if the earthquake had come too close to home.we'd be in trouble. >> is these earthquakes have occurred where there have buildings, will be looking at very major damage. >> however.scientists say the probabilty this is a foreshock of something larger to come.is low. >> new legislation is in the

works that would require state utilities to beef up security at critical power and water supplies. the april 2013 attack on a pg&e substation in south san jose was an eye opener for many state leaders including senator jerry hill. a small group of attackers using rifles were able to disable dozens of power transformers in less than an hour. they also cut nearby fiber lines, knocking out phone service in the area. the pg&e attack confirmed with members of the federal energy regulatory how vulnerable the nation power gird might be to terrorism. >> we saw this as a validation as to what we believe could be a potential damage. this could be done by a group of dedicated individuals. >> after the attack, the federal energy regulatory commission took their concerns to various utilities. they say progress is being made on improving

the security. >> limea federal judge in san francisco has stopped the destruction of millions of telephone records collected by the national security agency. u.s. district judge jeffrey white issued a nationwide order monday to safeguard evidence for invasion-of- privacy lawsuits until march 19. the secret federal court that approved the nsa's surveillance requires that documents be purged after five years for privacy reasons. on friday, the foreign intelligence surveillance court denied the federal government's request to keep the records for the sake of pending lawsuits. according to court documents, the nsa was set to destroy the records tuesday. >> saturday night's d-u-i checkpoint resulted in eight arrests in petaluma. police arrested five for suspicion of driving under the influence between five and nine o'clock.

>> governor jerry brown has been given an award for his efforts in supporting gay rights. the group "equality california" says brown was the first politician in the u-s to appoint a gay judge back in 1979. he was also honored for signing a bill last year allowing transgender students in public schools to use whichever bathrooms they choose. brown says a lot has changed for gays and lesbians over the past 40 years because of activists who are quote "the cutting edge." return to >> the national rifle association is asking supreme court justice anthony kennedy to block enforcement of a california city ordinance that bans gun magazines capable of holding more than 10 bullets. the ban in sunnyvale went 66 percent of voters approved it in november. the nra challenged the law, but a federal judge ruled last week that it does not violate the second amendment right to own guns for self- defense. the 9th u.s. circuit court of appeals in san francisco denied the nra's request for an emergency order to stop the ban from taking effect pending appeal. >>
