>> reporter: the pot business is turning out to a be a boon for colorado. people stood in line for hours on new year's day, the first day marijuana was sold to the public. some dispensaries even sold out. >> reporter:since then, colorado has been tallying it up. and the state raked in about 2-million dollars in taxes on recreational marijuana in january. >> reporter:the state has an aggressive tax policy. the drug is taxed 3 times. when it's produced, sold and bought. >> reporter:there's a 15- percent excise tax, 10- percent special sales tax, 2-point-9 percent sales tax, and licensing fees. >> reporter:compare that to medical marijuana, which has been legal in colorado since 2000. it only has the 2-point-9 percent sales tax and licensing fees. so even though it's a bigger market, it brought in less -- about one-point-four- million dollars.
