>> reporter: excavators are on scene. you can see two of them and as you mentioned, that means the demolition is soon to get underway. it already started a little bit ago. now they are taking a bit of a break but again as you mentioned, they do not believe it is safe to leave this building in the condition that it's in. that's why the demolition will resume and in a few minutes they want to bring that down and some people in the building across the street will not be able to get in until that demolition is to a place where fire officials believe the building is safe. almost 24 hours after a fire broke out in the under construction mb360 apartment complex, demolition crews began tearing down what's left of the fire ravaged building. earlier fire crews were still dousing the remains of the building with water and because hot spots remained, fire investigators were kept at bay, but through interviews, fire investigators are getting some sense of how tuesday's five- alarm fire began. >> in the area of origin which

5:02 pm
activated so there's water damage obviously and there were some windows that due to the heat, failed. so there's some broken glass and so forth. nothing that's major, nothing structural. >> reporter: but again, people in those buildings are not going to -- until this demolition is completed. you're looking at a lai view -- live view from the air of what the scene looks like now, still a lot of smoke in the air. as we mentioned, fire crews have been here and basically up until about 4:00 this afternoon they were still pouring water on the hot spots, and only until did they believe that those hot spots were out was this demolition allowed to begin. now, you saw some video of that a little bit ago. these excavators now sitting tight for a minute while they assess what to do next but again, more of this building has to come out before they deem it safe, then fire investigators can get in. that's the latest, reporting live from fourth street and mission bay in san francisco, dan kerman, kron4 news. the biggest fire began with a few wis were -- wisps of

>> extremely hot and they made a water curtain, basically. >> reporter: firefighters tapped into high pressure lines to pour water on the flames from every angle. >> rescue 1, get out here and talk to me now. that's an order. >> third alarm has been struck. >> reporter: as more units were sent to the fire, the building imploded. the top floors collapsed putting firefighters below in peril. >> get out. move. >> reporter: the embers touched off roof fires two blocks away. they were put out. all through the evening water cascaded down on the ruins of the building. at midnight fires still burning. crews stayed on the scene until dawn. and of course some firefighters stayed throughout the day and are still on scene right now making sure hot spots don't make an already bad situation even worse. pam. yesterday's raging inferno forced the evacuation of a number of nearby residents, the stada and venue apartment units directly across from the burning construction were most affected by it all.
5:05 pm
according to fire officials, 30 units in the stada building were damaged by radiating heat which cracked windows and set off fire sprinklers. today residents returning to pick up some of their belongings describe the terrifying ordeal. >> really i was just trying to get myself away from it as soon as possible. i had no idea if they were going to like shatter, at least before i left everything was still intact. they were just cracking. it was scary. i don't know if i had been in a situation that i have felt that scared before. >> the red cross and the salvation army are assisting residents and finding other places to stay -- in finding other places to stay. the fire department says that fire alarms and sprinkler systems must be reset before the building is completed safe to move back in. the construction project is in the heart of the developing san francisco mission bay neighborhood. kron4's maureen kelly spoke to people who work in that area who came in for a closer look at the destruction.

5:07 pm
and googling it and looking at it on their iphones and it's really upsetting. >> i walked by probably very close to the time when the fire started, walked right by the building and then got on the train, so when i found out soon after that that there was this giant fire, i was really surprised. >> almost everyone i spoke to say they feel bad for the construction workers and the project owners having to see all of their hard work go up in flames so close to completion. maureen kelly, kron4 news. >> that fire in san francisco's mission bay does bring back memories of another huge fire at a building under construction in the bay area. we are talking about the santana road fire. some of you may remember this, it happened in san jose more than a decade ago, even looks kind of similar. this was the scene august 19th, 2002, the fire destroyed about six of the project's 42 acres. only one store was open at that time, crate and barrel and it
