you're looking live where a fire ripped through a mountain view home earlier this morning. why officials are now calling this a crime scene. details in a live report. two years have passed since sierra lamar disappeared. how she is being remembered today. and how a helicopter crew rescued a dog that fell and became stranded on the edge of a north bay cliff. this is the bay area's news station, kron4 news weekend starts now. good morning, everybody. thanks for joining us on kron4 news weekend. i'm marty gonzalez. we will get to the top stories in just a second. but first let's get a check of the terrific bay area weather. >> if you liked yesterday, you'll probably like today. haven't approached sunrise yet.

you can see a little bit of cloud cover overlooking the san francisco bay so we have some patchy fog right now along the coastline but that's going to burn off as we head into the afternoon. as for temperatures, plenty of 40s and 50s out there, san francisco at 52, 48 out the door in livermore, but temperatures are going to 69th as we head into -- skyrocket as we head into the afternoon, 80s in the south bay, 80 degrees in livermore. we are looking at the possibility of record breaking highs today. i think we will see warmer temperatures inland but a bit of a cooldown along the coast. we have more of an onshore picture. the wind directions are changing and then looks like temperatures will drop off as we start the next workweek. so it won't be as warm as you head back to the office. temperatures drop off by at least 10 degrees. it's still going to be pretty mild, going to keep the sunshine around. looks like the models are backing off on any possibility for showers. marty. >> thank you, so much. onto the news this morning. the family of missing morgan hills teenager sierra lamar is marking a somber milestone

today, exactly two years since she disappeared. a memorial bench in her honor dedicated at 3:00 this afternoon at washington high school in fremont. sierra attended that school before she moved onto morgan hill. volunteers still gather every saturday to search for her remains or anything that might be a clue in the case. >> this has been a very emotional weekend and just because it's two years after she was abducted doesn't mean that the pain is any less. >> 22-year-old atalene garcia torrez was charged with the kidnapping and murder. he pled guilty last month. alameda sheriff's detectives are looking for the husband of a woman whose body was found in her castle valley home. investigators consider 46-year- old fung mi a person of interest. sheriff's office says it appears that the latest incident resulted in the murder

of 46-year-old uniony young -- uni jung. officials say the couple's 14- year-old daughter found her mother's body friday afternoon. fung mi has two registered guns. one was found at the house, the other missing. sheriff's department believes it may have been used to commit the crime. they have not been able to reach mi on his cell phone. >> would be attempting to contact them so that is unusual for us. >> sheriff's office believes that mi is driving a 2013 silver toyota rav 4. the vehicle may have paper license plates. deputies have been watching the home for more than 24 hours in case mi shows up. the sheriff's office says if you see fung mi do not approach him. instead, call 911 because he's considered to be armed and dangerous. new this morning, fire crews in mountain view trying to figure out what caused a house to go up in flames overnight. kron4's mike pelton reporting live from the scene along the 1700 block of fordham way.

mike. >> reporter: officials at this point are now treating this as a crime scene. there's police tape up around the home. you can see investigators are also here on scene, although they are really waiting for more daylight to get a better look inside the home. you can see a lot of damage inside. the flames also tore through the roof of the building. now, at this point investigators are not saying this is a possible case of arson. however, they are treating this as a crime scene because they want to make sure that nothing suspicious took place. now, that's because no one was home when this fire broke out early this morning right around 2:15. now, here's a picture from the mountain view police department. you can see smoke billowing up over this home and over the neighborhood. now, a family friend tells me the family has been on vacation for a couple of weeks. and mountain view fire responded to the call early this morning when someone driving by noticed the flames and called it in. they have a large portion of the fire knocked down in about 20 minutes but they say many of the rooms inside are completely destroyed. come back out here live. you can see crime scene tape still up around the home. investigators still waiting for a little more sunlight to get a

better look at the scene here. we expect that to happen over the next hour. we also expect to get an update on the fire over the next hour as well. marty, the good news, however, no one was injured in this blaze. >> yeah, that is good news. thank you very much, that's mike pell ton reporting -- mike pelton reporting live. an incident happened about 9:30 l night -- at 26 and folsom streets. police say the man suffered gunshot wounds to his chest and arms. thus far no suspects arrested. overseas now, developing news this morning, the number of countries involved in the search for the missing malaysia airlines flight 370 stands now at 25. that's up from 14. now a u.s. official says investigators think that this was an act of piracy, the investigation is turning to the pilot and co-pilot. malaysian police searched the homes of the 53-year-old captain and his co-pilot fariq

pretty mild weather, temperatures in the 60s, so that's definitely something to celebrate for this time of year. remember, we are still in the wintertime but we will see temperatures drop off by about three to 4 degrees there, but warmer weather inland. so it's going to be another day with potentially 80s in the south bay and the east bay but by tomorrow heading back to work, temperatures will cool down and we are going to increase the gusty winds, could see gusts up to 20 if not 30 miles per hour, especially in the higher elevations and then looking ahead, models really backing off on any potential for rain. we are going to stay dry throughout the week. here's your afternoon highs for today, redwood city climbing to 77. i think we will see a handful of 80s in the south bay, that includes sunnyvale, campbell, low gath today -- los gatos today hitting a high of 82. similar weather in the east bay well, hit the 80s for walnut creek, 77 union city. mid-60s along the coastline, 79 if you're heading up to wine country, oakland today, with a

high of 75. we are approaching the possibility to break some records but cooler, milder weather as we head into next week, not a rain drop in sight for at least the next seven days. marty. >> thank you so much. investigators are learning more about the deadly explosion that leveled two new york city apartment buildings on wednesday. they say a 127-year-old gas main may have been the cause of the explosion, but that's not official yet this morning. the blast comes as many u.s. utilities struggle to maintain or replace old, hard to reach and leaky gas mains in older urban areas. today's regulations say fire marshals should be able to access gas pipes and meters in front of the building's basement. former boston mayor thomas menino is being treated for advanced cancer. menino who was mayor last year during the bomb attacks in boston at the marathon says quote we will get through this. he also said this is the most profound challenge of his life. the 71-year-old was reportedly

diagnosed in the months after leaving office. menino's cancer started in an unknown location and spread to his lymph nodes and his liver. menino began chemotherapy earlier this month. a colorado mom is face -- is behind bars this morning for falsely claiming that her 6- year-old son was battling cancer and then using that story to collect money from family, friends and strangers. sandy nguyen used over $25,000 of donated money to take a family vacation to disneyland. the facebook photo shows nguyen and her family at disneyland. a neighbor who used to visit the family's home says he recently saw the boy with a shaved head. he and other neighbors say they are shocked by this rev revolution -- revelation. >> my reaction is i can't believe it. i would be going to my neighbors asking if they could help me and if i did that, i would beat you to my wallet to help them. >> although the neighbors say the nguyen family never asked

for money, people donated anyway. classmates donated money, a fundraising 5k race was also organized and nguyen later admitted her son did not have cancer. the california republican party spring convention is wrapping up today in burlingame. two california republicans who are running for governor are sticking it familiar themes and faces as they try to win over new supporters. nordonnelly is a social conservative who advocates expanding gun rights while koch carry -- cochkari is focusing on education. pilots say the world's largest solar power plant is nearly blinding them. two complaints have been filed against the plant in the mohave desert. it sprawls across roughly five square miles of federal land near the california/nevada

border. a pilot wrote it was almost impossible to look in the direction of the plant because of the intense brightness there. an air traffic controller reported receiving daily complaints about the glare from pilots. the plant's operating says it's investigate -- operator says it's investigating the issue. the blue angels headed back to the sky one year after budget cuts grounded them. the arabic aero batics team -- the blue angels normally perform about three dozen shows every year but they got into the air only twice last year and they will be here for a week in san francisco. jason collins will play for the nets through the playoffs if they make it that far. collins has finished his second it 10 day contract which meant the mets had to sign him for the remainder of the season if they want to keep him and they do. one of the best pro -- bob

take a look at this video from sonoma county sheriff's helicopter crew. they were saving a dog, a dog owner called police about 1:45 yesterday afternoon saying that her dog fell over a cliff in the portuguese beach area. the deputy noticed that the labrador retriever was wearing a chest harness which made it easier to secure the dog. and once that happened it was flown to the top of the cliff and then released. that rescue took less than three minutes to complete. palo alto high school alumni students and staff will be saying farewell to their iconic gym later today. the high school's 85-year-old gym will be rebuilt into a new facility. the official farewell begins at 12:30 this afternoon with campus tours along with the vintage fashion show and a memorabilia booth. 49ers coach jim harbaugh and

of people but people did manage to the beach yesterday. the beaches were packed. we saw mid to upper 60s for ocean beach, stenson beach, a beautiful day across the entire bay area yesterday and we are going to see similar weather today. although we are going to be a touch cooler along the coastline, we will see warmer temperatures inland so i think more of us will actually make it into the 80s. right now mostly clear conditions with the exception of the san francisco bay coast line. that's where we are seeing patches of fog right now. temperatures there in the upper 40s, santa rosa under clear skies at 39 degrees. 46 out the door in fairfield right now and 49 leaving the house in hayward. by the time we reach the afternoon, it's going to be another sunny day, pretty warm conditions, take a look at these numbers, 80 degrees in livermore, 80 for sunnyvale, survive degrees in san mateo today and 71 for san francisco. so by later on tonight, sunday evening, 8:00, looks like temperatures will start to cool down with most locations in the upper 50s. heading back to work tomorrow, a lot of folks are going to need the jacket, it also looks

like we are going see a 10- degree temperature drop. we are going to see wind gusts increase, 20 to 30-mile-per- hour winds, wouldn't be surprised if the national weather service issues some sort of advisory but looks like we are going to hold onto the sunshine for the rest of the week. in fact, very stable consistent weather. i have been consulting some of the models and it looks like the rain chances are going to back off so looks like we will be dry for at least the next seven days. marty. >> thank you, erica. san francisco police investigating a stabbing that left one victim injured in dolores park. it happened because of a fight last night about 7:30. police say that the victim's injuries not life threatening but they are still looking for the person responsible for the stabbing attack. the alameda county sheriff's office says that it's looking for a person of interest after a woman was found dead in her castro valley home. kron4 spoke with investigators who say that person of interest is the woman's husband. >> reporter: the alameda county sheriff's office is looking for 46-year-old fung mi. investigators say the

circumstances and evidence possibly langing him to his wife's murder have been found in this home but so far they haven't been able to reach him. >> there's a history of domestic violence at the house. we have responded to several calls there over the past few years. >> reporter: the sheriff's office says it appears the latest incident resulted in the murder of the mother of this man's two young daughters. >> the coroner has positively identified the victim as 26- year-old yunyi zhang. >> reporter: the deputy says depending mi has two registered guns -- feng mi has two registered guns. one is missing. >> and investigators are considering feng mi to be armed and dangerous. >> reporter: luckett says investigators haven't been able to reach me on his cell phone. he hasn't been trying to call his daughters either. the 14-year-old is the one who found her mother's body friday afternoon. >> we have taken the necessary steps to ensure the safety of both of the minor children.

>> reporter: the sheriff's office believes mi is driving the family suv. this is an example of what it looks like, a 2013 silver toyota rav 4 with the license plate assigned to the vehicle were found in the home. >> the vehicle may have dublin toyota paper plates on it. however, we cannot confirm that those plates are still attached to the vehicle. >> reporter: deputies standing in front of the home through the afternoon, more than 24 hours after the body was discovered just in case mi showed up, but still, no sign of him. >> i think anyone whose children haven't had contact with them over the day would be attempting to contact them so that is unusual for us. >> reporter: investigators say if you cross paths with feng mi do not approach him. call law enforcement immediately. in castro valley, philippe shagal, kron4 news. we are getting an update on a baby whose nose was bitten off alleged by by -- by his father because the baby

wouldn't stop crying. the baby will get another scan on tuesday to check the extent of the skull fracture. police arrested the father, 18- year-old joshua cooper from fairfield on thursday. he is scheduled in court for arraignment tomorrow. the 1-month-old lost 1/3 of his nose and suffered a brain hemorrhage in addition to the skull fracture. two people have been killed in a deadly crash on highway 12 in santa rosa. that crash happened just before 5:30 yesterday afternoon. the chp reports several cars were involved in the crash. it happened on the eastbound lanes but right now it's not clear if other people were hurt in that crash. all eastbound lanes on highway 12 are now reopened. st. patrick's day and alcohol often go hand in hand and sometimes alcohol ends up in the wrong hands. so officials organized a sting operation to bus people who are old enough to drink but are trying to buy beer for those who aren't. they made over 500 citations or arrests and kron4's dan rubin went on the sting with police

operation shoulder tap has a scope that extends beyond alcohol. >> they have made several contacts with people that are already on probation or parole just by virtue of knowing we are out there, a lot of people are more inclined to make the appropriate choice. >> reporter: operation shoulder tap in effect several times a year but law enforcement officials won't say where or when so it's up to you to never find out. reporting in pacifica, dan rubin, kron4 news. in redwood city a homeless man is arrested for robbing a bank. police say it happened about 2:00 saturday afternoon. a man identified as hugo carranza entered a bank of america branch on jefferson avenue and marshall street. he demanded money from a teller. well, the teller started gathering the money and was able to alert another employee who then called police. arriving officers were able to quickly find and arrest carranza on suspicion of robbery. all of this money that was stolen was returned to the bank. no one was injured in the incident. still ahead for you on kron4 news weekend, a man gets

a bay area man turns himself into police after he googled himself and discovered he was on northern california's list of most wanted criminals. the daily mail reports christopher villa topa had no idea he was wanted for firing a gun at the san leandro senior center back in august. no one was hit, fortunately. he is now listed as a captured criminal on the site. he said he wanted to clear his conscience by turning himself in. nato says some of its websites were attacked by hackers yesterday but the attacks didn't affect any of

its systems. nato has not said who is responsible but a ukrainian website said the group cyber berkute was behind it all. the attack happened a day before that controversial vote of splitting of crimea from ukraine. cyber berkute is a reference to the riot police. u.s. government is giving up control of the organization that manages internet names and this move will end the contract between the commerce department and icann. the move is consistent with the free and open internet. but opponents including former house speaker newt gingrich says this change -- being able to control the internet in their countries. the record for the fastest rubik's cube time has been shattered but not by a human. in the u.k. the arm powered cube stormer 3 robert recorded -- robert

rock river and that's causing early flooding in the area. some homeowners in the rock island county started seeing the floodwaters friday. emergency crews are checking on residents to make sure they are safe but so far no one has needed any aid. apparently the community is used to flooding, just not this early in the season. in world news this morning, the nigerian navy says it's destroyed 260 legal oil refineries and burned some 100,000 tons of contraband fuel. the country has a big problem with oil theft. it's estimated that some 200,000 barrels of oil worth more than $20 million are stolen every day. nigeria is africa's biggest petroleum producer. syria says its military claimed a key town in the lebanese 3w0eurd that was -- border that was a target in a month long offensive. the fighting is still going on but the government was in control of much of the town. this weekend marks the third anniversary of the syrian revolution.

in san francisco today a walk is planned at noon from justin justin herman plaza to mark the occasion. a group of sonoma county women will start a 24 hour fast for families. it's calling attention to comprehensive immigration reform. if you're interested you cathe sebastopol town plaza. gm under the microscope this morning after a major recall linked to deaths. congress is planning hearings and officials may be looking into possible criminal conduct. it's all because of 29-year-old brook melton as she was driving down the highway without warning her 2005 chevy cobalt crashed. it was shut down and crashed into oncoming traffic. she died of her injuries. brook had taken her cobalt to a car dealer to fix the ignition shutoff a few days before she died. the ignition had essentially slipped into accessory mode and that effectively cuts almost all the power to the car. records suggest that gm knew

about the defective ignition for more than a decade but gm's new ceo said gm acted without hesitation to incorporate fixes. last month gm recalled more than a million 1/2 vehicles to correct the problem. melton's family is outraged. >> i'm bubbling over with anger. i am overwhelmed by anger. if we had just known this information, my daughter would still be here today. >> an auto safety group claims the defect is tied to 303 deaths but gm says the new report is misrepresenting raw crash data. gm says it has traced the defect to at least 12 deaths. there are also other big recalls from honda and chrysler to tell you about. honda is recalling almost 900,000 odyssey minivans between the years 2005 through 2010. it's because a fuel pump cover can deteriorate and cause a fuel leak. chrysler is recalling 18,000

home. investigators considering 46- year-old lee a person of interest. there is a history of domestic violence reported from the house. it appears that the latest incident resulted in the murder of the 46-year-old. officials say the couple's 14- year-old found her mother's body friday afternoon. he has two registered guns, one found inside of the home and the other is missing. the sheriff's department believes it could have been used to commit the crime. they have not been able to reach him on his cell phone. >> i think anyone who hasn't had contact with their children would be attempting to contact them. that is unusual for us. >> they believe he is driving a 2013 toyota rav4. deputies have been watching the house for more than 24 hours in case he shows up. if you see the man, donna approach him, instead call 911 because he is considered to be armed and dangerous.

the 70s. marty. >> thank you, erica. firefighters hoping to have a wildfire that threatened more than 200 homes and businesses under control soon. the pierce fire is burning in thermal in southern california. it is now 80% contained. as of now, no one has been hurt. in national news this morning, investigators learning more about that deadly explosion that leveled two new york city apartment buildings back on wednesday. they say a 127-year-old gas main may have been the cause of the explosion but that's not official. the blast comes as many u.s. utilities are struggling to maintain or replace old, hard to reach, and leaky gas mains in older urban areas. today's regulations say that fire marshalls should be able to access gas pipes and meters in the front of the building's basements. former boston mayor being treated for advanced cancer. menino who was mayor during the bomb attacks at the boston

because the infant wouldn't stop crying. the infant will get another scan on tuesday to check the extent of the skull fracture and bleeding. police arrested the boy's father, joshua cooper, in fairfield on thursday. he is scheduled for arraignment tomorrow. the one month old has lost one- third of his nose and suffered a brain hemorrhage in addition to the skull fracture. two people have been killed in a crash on highway 12 in santa rosa. it happened just before 5:30 yesterday evening. several cars were involved and it happened on the eastbound lanes. it's not clear if other people were hurt in the crash but all of the eastbound lanes on highway 112 are reopened. a lot of people in the east day shaved their head for a good cause saturday. hundreds of people participating another the oakland children's hospital to raise money for childhood cancer research. studies show 1 in 333 children will be diagnosed with cancer

farewell to the iconic gym later today. the gymnasium will be rebuilt into a new facility. it begins at 12:30 and includes tours of the campus and a vintage fashion show. some of the attendees include palo alto mayor shepard and 49ers coach harbaugh. a homeless man is arrested for robbing a bank. it happened about 2:00 yesterday afternoon. a man identified as caranza entered the bank of america branch on marshall street in redwood and demanded money from a teller. the teller started gathering that money and was able to alert another employee who then called police. arriving officers were able to quickly find and arrest him on the suspicion of robbery. all of the money that was stolen was returned to the bank. no injuries were reported. a bay area man also turned himself into police after he googled himself and discovered he was on northern california's list of most wanted criminals.

today at noon, a high surf advisory in effect. waves between 12 and 18 feet. rip currents a possibility. it looks like the advisory is in effect until early monday morning. the forecast shows dry weather, total sunshine over the next several days and next weekend we will keep 70s around for everyone's day off. >> sounds great. in the news this morning, fire crews in mountain view trying to figure out what caused the house to go into flames overnight. mike pelton is live at the scene along the 1700 block of fordham way. >> reporter: investigators are here on the scene and you can see smoke still coming from the house. the flames ripped through the top part of the building, straight through the roof. there's a lot of damage inside of the home as well. at this point, authorities are treating this as a crime scene. the police department is in the process of bringing in a trailer full of tools used to collect evidence. now, they tell me they're doing all of this because no one was

home at the time of the fire. the fire department tells me all of this is standard procedure but they need to rule out the possibility of foul play. here is a picture of flames after they sparked around 2:30 this morning. it damaged much of the home. no one was here at the time. someone driving by called it in. neighbors say the two people who live here have been away for vacation. crews are on the scene taking pictures of a fire that scared many neighbors in the middle of the night. >> it's huge. >> were you nervous? >> a little bit, yeah. our house is only a couple -- couple houses away from here. >> now, one more look at the flames from earlier this morning. firefighters did knock down the blaze after about 40 minutes. as you come back out here live, you see damage to the home. investigators are on the scene trying to piece all of this together. they tell me they likely will be here a good portion of the

day. the good news, no injuries in the blaze this morning. back to you, marty. >> that is mike pelton reporting live. on to other news this morning. alameda detectives are looking for a man whose wife's body was found in their home. there is a history of domestic violence reported from that house. the sheriff's office says it appears that the latest incident resulted in the murder of the 46-year-old woman. officials say the couple's 14- year-old daughter found her mother's body friday afternoon in the home. mi has two registered guns, one found at the house. the other is missing. the sheriff's department believes it may have been used to commit the crime. investigators have not been able to reach mi on his cell phone. >> i think anyone whose children haven't had contact with them over a day would be attempting to contact them. that is unusual for us. >> sheriff's department believes this mi is driving a 2013 silver toyota rav4.

developing news overseas this morning. the number of countries involved in the search for the missing malaysia airlines flight 370 stands at 25. that's up from 14. malaysian police searched the homes of the pilot and copilot. police are examining a flight simulator that was found in shaw's home. shaw has decades on the job and more than 18,000 hours of flying experience. the change in focus of the investigation prompted by electronic data that shows the plane flying in a straight path. then after communication was cut off, the jet made a hard left turn, flying off course over the malaysian peninsula. experts continue to criticize the investigation. they're questioning why this information wasn't uncovered earlier. for the latest on the search for the missing airliner and to learn more details on the full investigation, you can visit kron4.com. happening now overseas,

now, yesterday i talked about the possibility of a few sprinkles for thursday and friday. models really backing off on that. i think we will keep dry weather around. temperatures remaining in the 70s for at least the next 7 days. marty. >> we have breaking news from san francisco this morning. a pedestrian has been taken to the hospital after being hit by a bus. the collision happened about 8:10 this morning at 7th and market streets in downtown san francisco. no word on the identity of the pedestrian. officials say that 60-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries in the collision. the driver of the bus remained on the scene. the crash affected traffic at the intersection as you might imagine. the cause of the collision is still under investigation. two people have been killed in a crash on highway 12 in santa rosa. it happened before 5:30 saturday morning. the chp saying that three cars were involved in the crash. not clear if other people were hurt but all eastbound lanes on

highway 12 are now reopened. san francisco police also investigating the stabbing that left one victim injured in delores park. they are looking for the person responsible for the stabbing attack. we have an update for the baby whose nose was bitten off allegedly by his father because he wouldn't stop crying. the one month old will get another scan on tuesday to check the extent of the skull fracture and bleeding. police aevent ared the child's father, 18-year-old joshua cooper in fairfield on thursday. he is scheduled in court tomorrow on arraignment. the one month hold has lost one third of his nose and suffered a brain hemorrhage in addition to the skull fracture. st. patrick's day and alcohol often go hand in hand and alcohol often ends up in the wrong hands. so there is a sting operation busting people who are buying

♪it's getting hot in here, so take off all your clothes ♪ ♪ >> if you love this song, check out a san francisco radio station. for two days now, 105.7 has been playing the song over and over just on loop. listeners probably know the words by now. it started at 3:00 p.m. on friday. it's been going on all weekend. it's causing a lot of buzz on social media, including the hashtag nelly1057 on twitter. listeners are wondering if it's a technical issue or if the station was hijacked. the station is being relaunched. but still folks are tweeting about it all morning, including travis who says i'm glad the hashtag continues and it should never end. marcus says i for one welcome

our nelly. well, univision is switching formats to an english language station called hot 105.7. and we'll be right back. happy listening. >> what are you watching? who is that? who is that? who is that? >> well, i can tell you that is baby haley of san jose. apparently a big fan of kron 48:00 newscast. her parents sent in the video. they tell us that the 11:00 newscast is a little past her bedtime. >> who is that? >> take a look at this video of sonoma county helicopter crews saving a dog. the dog owner called police about 1:45 saturday afternoon saying that they are dog had fallen over a cliff.

they noticed the lab was wearing a chest harness and that made it easier to secure the dog. it was flown to the top of the cliff and released. the rescue took less than three minutes to complete. after nearly 50 years of being in business, joe's cable car restaurant will be closing its doors later today. the owner opened the mission street business way back in 1965. he says it's time to retire and he didn't want to sell the business to anyone else so the restaurant will close today. opens up for the last time at 11:00. that will wrap things up for us. things for joining us. for annie and erica, thanks for watching. don't forget to join us tonight at 8:00 and we will see you next saturday at 7:00. bye-bye.
