this morning on the kron 4 morning news. an massive earthquake off the coast of chile leaves at least five people dead. how last night's natural disaster could be a sign of bigger quakes to come. a man jumps out a window to save himself from a san francisco home that exploded in flames, leaving one person dead. and p-g-and-e facing federal criminal charges for the deadly explosion and fire in san bruno. the company's response. as the kron 4 morning news starts right now. says a good morning. thanks for joining us. it's tuesday april 2nd-wednesday april 2nd. >>: i'm mark danon. let's head for it over to

the weather center with erica kato. >>erica: good morning. wet roads always shoot for your entire length of 1 01. why rain right now walnut creek. the ticket look at interstate 680. as we focus our attention on the peninsula looks like some light rain right now for portions of the bayshore freeway but that's really the extent to extent of it but overall showers are really starting to taper off. with seem more along the coast line up almost a net and a half. you can see the rotation of the system of satellites and radar. it continues to move out of the bay area. as we head into the afternoon we will expect partly cloudy skies.

>>: thank you erica. a monster earthquake in chile: the magnitude: eight-point- two. at least 5-people are dead. video shows people running for higher ground because of tsunami warnings. which are being extended to northernmost chile now. and geologists say an even bigger quake is coming. andrew spencer reports. >>:an eight-point-two magnitude earthquake happened off the coast of northern chile, about 60 miles northwest of iquique, just before nine p-m local time. residents fled the coast when they learned the earthquake triggered a tsunami. officials announced tsunami warnings for chile, peru, and ecuador and watches for colombia, panama, and costa rica -- though those warnings were later dropped. the president of chile declared disaster areas in three northern provinces.

sa "i would like to make a call to the people who live in the areas to keep calm, to follow the instructions of the local authorities, and local authorities, and do everything that is necessary to ensure the security of themselves and their families." several people were reported dead as the earthquake triggered small landslides and cut off phones and electricity.

officials said members of the air force were on their way to the port city of iquique, where about 300 prisoners managed to escape in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake. officials as far away as hawaii worried about the potential impact there and asked people to stay out of the water. "if you're not ready for it, you can get into difficulty, and if you're in the water, you can get banged about, so we really want to keep people out of the water, close to the coast." i'm andrew spencer, reporting an earthquake expert here in our state -- in pasadena -- says his team can estimate the size of a new earthquake expected at some point. we expect about another 8.8, 8.9 earthquake here sometime in the future. could be tomorrow, could be in 50 years we do not know

when its going to occur. but the keypoint here is that this magnitude 8.2 is not the large earthquake we were expecting for this area we're actually still expecting potentially an even larger earthquake. chile's leaders plan to survey the damaged areas today. three-and-a-half-years after a pipeline exploded and destroyed a san bruno neighborhood, the u-s attorney has officially filed an indictment against p-g and- e for ignoring safety warnings and relying on bad information. kron-4's grant lodes read through the indictment and has more on what p-g and e is accused of. it's being described by state attorney general kamala harris as an important step to hold p-g and e accountable for the 2010 pipeline explsoion that killed eight people and injured 58 others. the indictment filed today charges p-g and e with 12 felonies, accusing the company of violating several federal pipeline safety laws. according to the indictment, the agency willfully used false and incomplete information while checking the safety of the pipeline that eventually ruptured and destroyed 38 homes in san bruno. the indictment specifically looks at three different lines that were trouble

spots -- one of which is said to be the highest risk of all. in 2011, investigators with the national transportation safety board learned p-g and happen e's use of the false information is what led to the explosion. a conviction on all 12 counts could cost the agency six million dollars. no person within the agency is named in the indictment, and while this is a criminal p-g and e released a statement on the 12-count indictment. expressing regret about the incident. and all who were affected by it. p-g- and- e says it continues to make strides in the aftermath of the explosion. the agency recently opened the new gas control center in san ramon. and is also attempting to repair pipelines currently at risk. sounbd of that woman being struck by lightning! how she's even talking about it this morning. we'll take you to the university where you can earn a degree. in *drone technology.

an 80-foot redwood tree in berkeley practically exploded because of lightning on monday. lightning apparently wasn't just a problem for trees. kron-4's justine waldman found out an east bay woman is lucky to be alive, after she says she was hit by lightning during the same storm. even this morning when i got up i was leary about going outside

isemily davis is counting her lucky stars. during monday's storm, she was walking by berkeley bowl streets around 1 in the afternoon. when it looked like someone took my picture big flash and i was holding my umbrella because there was a downpour going on saw orb of light come down the umbrella handle and then i heard huge noise and it sounded like a bomb went off and it sho the windows something shocking came from the skywith her heart pounding, emily couldn't believe what happened and dropped her cup of coffee. i had to put it down bc my hand was shaking couldn't stop for 5 minutes glad her umbrella made of plastic and she wasn't wearing any metal. umbrella sot i felt a little bit of a shok like when walking across the carpet she wasn't hurt and didn't go to the doctor until today because she tells me she still has a metallic taste her in mouth. my teeth on the side where i got struk have pain in them and no superpowers either my 16 year old cousin asked have you tried running maybe you are the flash now! emily thinks one of the branches from the bolt is what actually hit herpossibly saving her life.

it was coming down all day yesterday in the north bay. the rain. traffic was very slow, drivers were taking their time, and roads were very heavy earlier in the day. and ot was an all-around wet thunder as well. there were no reports of any flooding or damage. one person is dead and four others in the hospital.

story. firefighters from multiple agencies responded to this house on castillo street just before 5:30a second alarm was called. the house was fully engulfed in flames and a man was lying on the ground in front of the house. he jumped from the second story window to escape the fire. edson pineda lives on the block and came out of his house right after the man jumped. i guess he didn't have no way to get out and he just jumped and it was crazy seeing him just laying on the floor full of blood and the house full of smoke. it

was really sad because you don't wish this on nobody especially in your neighborhood. houghfirefighters had a lot to deal with. we had a combined responsibility to deal with the fire attack and with the medical responsibility to deal with the people in the building. hamas in all one person is dead and five people were transported to various hospitals. two of those who were transported are listed in critical conditiontheher thrd moderate injuries. edson says he thought his neighbor was dead.

a small town in colorado won't be issuing hunting licenses to shoot down drones. voters in deer trail overwhelmingly defeated a proposal that would have authorized the rural community to issue drone- hunting permits. 73-percent of the voters voted down the idea. federal aviation authorities have warned it's a crime to shoot at drones.

residents of deer trail, colorado voted tuesday to reject a measure that would allow them to shoot down drones. mayor frank fields knew it might seem crazy to some people but he thought it might bring in some much town. he's not upset that the measure was voted down. it's been a long year and i'm kinda glad it's coming to end one way or the other. 181 residents went to the polls. 73-percent of the voters shot down the idea of shooting down drones. and the future of technology has one ohio university offering a new degree program. starting this fall, kent state university will offer a minor in drone technology.

leland yee: one of the key figures -- notorious former chinatown gangster raymond "shrimp boy" chow -- will be back in court today. officials say they hope to assign an attorney to him soon. he still doesn't have one because of conflicts with previous cases. chow has been convicted in the past of racketeering and drug distribution conspiracy. in all, 26-people are named in the complaint.

another key player in the corruption case was just in court yesterday. political consultant keith jackson. caught up in murder ahead for hire, drug and firearm allegations. but as kron 4's dan kerman reports, his attorney says jackson is innocent. the attorney is questioning tuesday federal prosecutors argued that political consultant keith jackson is a one man crime wave who should not be released pending trail? prosecutors allege jackson, a campaign consultant for suspended state senator leland yee solicited drugs from an undercover agent, conspired with yee to traffic in firearms, and facilitated a murder for hire.

we're coming up on 4-30. here are the big stories we're working on for you this morning. officials say at least five people died as a magnitude of eight-point-two earthquake hit off the coast of chile. three of those people were crushed; two suffered heart attacks during the shaking. the earthquake hit just before nine p-m local time. the president of chile declared disaster areas in three northern provinces.

the earthquake triggered small landslides and cut off phones and electricity. p-g-and-e is now facing federal criminal charges for how it handled the san bruno explosion in 20-10 that killed eight people. the charges were filed by the u.s. attorney's office. alleging the utility did not properly keep records and had shoddy maintenance of it's pipeline. the indictment filed tuesday, charges p-g and e with 12 felonies. a conviction on all 12 counts could cost the agency six million dollars. landscape watering will be permitted just one day a week and it is banned on rainy days.

the california department of water resources says measurements taken in the sierra nevada yesterday indicate no real relief fom the drought. it's still a dry year. results of the study predict a challenging summer for california farmers and communities facing water restrictions. the recent storms have helped boost the snowpack's water levels but have not

station with a black bag and baseball hat. he then ordered the clerk to put all the money in the bag and threatened to burn down the gas station. the robber was seen driving a ford fusion. its not known how much money the robber got away with two people have been arrested in connection with a violent home invasion robbery in pleasant hill.

police say the robbery when a man with a gun forced sauce himself inside a woman's home. the man locked the woman and her mother in a room and stole a bunch of things, including the victim's car. then yesterday, police got a tip that led them to a man they think robbed those women. named david vancil.

in sacramento, california, authorities and more than 100 volunteers are celebrating the safe return of a missing runner after two days of searching. nick monacelli was there for the happy reunion. there's no point in waiting to show you the happy moments. these are bob root's family the good news. yeah i am pretty darn ecstatic about it. that's the lieutenant in charge of finding the missing runner. and here's where dozens of

search and rescue volunteers waited impatiently for the man they've been looking for since sunday. isthat wait seemed to take longer than bob was actually missing. and after close to 50 hours missing and more than 100 volunteers searching. the first thing root got was this. thank you for always keeping the faith. thank you, thank you, thank you. richard prestia is one of bob's running friends. sunday a group of runners were on this trail, they lost bob around 9:30 that morning.
