the kron 4 morning news starts right now. good morning. it is wednesday, april 9th. i'm james fletcher. our top story: more underwater signals have been detected. in the search for the missing malaysia airlines jetliner. ships rigged with underwater search gear are investigating several deep- sea acoustic signals. which may be coming from the black box of the missing plane. two signals were picked up yesterday. crews hope they're coming from the plane's two data recorders. the search teams believe they are searching in the

right area but still need to see wreckage before anything is confirmed as coming from the missing plane. even if the black box is recovered, investigators may not be able to fully piece together what happened. that's because the cockpit voice recorder contains the final two- hours of audio. the plane stayed airborne for seven - hours after veering off-course. one of the 9-1-1 dispatchers who sent help to the asiana plane crash. is honored as he city of san francisco's 'dispatcher of the year.' the 9-1-1 calls about crash of flight 214 came in quickly after the plane hit the ground. and the response from police and firefighters took just over five-minutes. kron-4's alecia reid spoke with matthew roybal, who recalled the frenetic and emotional calls after the crash. return to index of stories...

sot - im really happy they feel that way about me and im appreciative. oscars sot - i had a lot of help so this wasn't a one person team on dispatch, there were a lot of people helping in the background. the day asiana flight 214 crash landed at san francisco international airport, matthew roybal took control at the office of emergency management. sot - there were a lot of things. i literally couldn't keep up with everything if i didn't have help he now holds the dispatcher cause of the year award, which is picked by fellow dispatchers. his peers recognized the work he did and honored him for it. sot - that is the ultimate compliment when you are recognized by your peers. matthew says he knew there was a lot going on at the airport, but it was the tv screen inside the office that showed him the chaos. sot - that's when it really

hit you, you know that it's bad. that it's tragic. sot - i had to stay focused. i didn't have time to think about it more. i knew it was intense but i had to focus on my job. thankfully he says, there was calm, clear and professional support throughout the ordeal. while getting enough emergency responders to the airpport, matthew had to also make sure he wasn't leaving the city unattended. reporting in san francisco. a new security flaw has been discovered. that has researchers advising everyone who uses the internet to change all of their passwords! the flaw puts everyone's passwords, credit cards and other sensitive data. at risk.

it's called "heartbleed". and it attacks encryption technology which is used to securely transmit e-mail, social networking and even e-commerce transactions. making matters worse, heartbleed remained undetected for two years! toyota will recall more than six -and- a-half million vehicles worldwide. to fix issues with the steering and seats. the world's largest automaker is recalling the yaris, scion x-a, rav-4 and hilux models. after finding faults in the steering column, wiring harnesses and seat railings. the recall covers models between 2004 and 2010. it is still not clear if the problems are part of the design. or are manufacturing issues.

time-- has died. the ultimate warrior-- real name james hellwig -- collapsed outside an arizona hotel yesterday evening-- while walking to his car with his wife. the warrior was taken to a nearby hospital -- where he later died. still no word on what he died of. his death comes just days after being inducted into the w-w-e hall of fame. warrior began his w-w-e career in 1987 and quickly rose to the top to become one of the biggest stars in w-w-e history. he was 54 and is survived by his wife dana and his two daughters. still no sign of a woman who was last seen more than a week ago along the slopes of mount tam.

and authorities are now scaling back the search effort. search and rescue crews only spent a few days looking for the missing woman. kron 4's charles clifford tells us why they are pulling back. magdalina glinkowski was last seen on sunday march 30th when she was photographed by a security camera at a parking lot on mt. tamalpais. 3 days later her car was still in the

same spot and authorizes started looking for her. but after less than a week of searching, including an all out effort over the weekend, the search was scaled back. but compared to other missing women cases, the search for magdalena seems very brief. in march of 2012, 15-year - old sierra lamar vanished in morgan hill. hundreds of

until her body was found the following april. her husband, scott peterson, was eventually convicted of killing her. but there are big difference between those past cases and the search for magdalena. both laci peterson and sierra lamar disappeared under suspicious circumstances. peterson was pregnant and because she vanished on christmas, authorites and family suspected foul play from the start. lamar was last seen at a bus stop on her way to school and it seems unlikely she would have disappeared of her own free will. magdalena on the other hand, has so far vanished without a trace and while authorities can't rule it out, there's also no evidence of foul play. that lack of information seems to have left the search without a clear motivation to continue a large scale effort. also, both peterson and lamar were well known in their respective communities. they had family and friends who actively kept the searches going. according to her family, magdalinea was new to the bay area. she had few friends and no family nearby. her parents, who live in boston, are in marin trying to help with the search effort , but she has few advocates in the community. it took almost three days for anyone to even notice she was missing. and finally, rangers with california state parks say that they have limited resources and that'll need credible information in order to send search crews back onto the mountain. this just in.

authorities are searching for two people who fell into the mississippi river when a barge overturned while unloading steel coils in northeast arkansas. the coast guard has closed part of the river while it searches for the two people. a third person jumped to safety when the barge overturned. two people are missing after a barge capsized tuesday in mississippi county, arkansas. the accident happened at a dock owned by kinder morgan. a company spokesman says the barge was being unloaded when it flipped over. the barge itself is completely submerged in the river. the search on the mississippi river was suspended until wednesday morning. the river is near flood

stage and rising. hoss and rain at camp lejeune north carolina is in custody after allegedly shooting and killing a fellow marine. authorities say the shooting happened in a guard shack at the main base, and the shooter was on guard duty at the time. the dead marine was shot once in the chest. president obama and the first lady will head to fort hood today to attend a memorial service for those killed in last week's deadly shooting.

meanwhile dozens of families who lost loved ones in tragedies including 9/11 and the connecticut school massacre are trying to create a fund to support victims and relatives of the fort hood shooting. the national center for victims of crime says about 70 families are supporting the fund to provide no- strings-attached cash payments. the autopsy report on the woman who led washington d- c police on a car chase through the capital last october. has been publicly released. the report reveals 34-year- old miriam carey was shot five times from behind. her one-year-old child was in the car at the time. but was not injured. toxicology tests determined carey did not have alcohol or drugs in her blood. carey was not armed. her family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the government saying the shooting was unjustified. u-s capitol police say the agency can't comment on the suit during an ongoing

passengers traveling on american on miles they earned or paid full price for an economy seat won't get to check two bags for free anymore. some elite-level frequent fliers on both airlines will get one less free bag than before. as for redeeming miles for free flights, us airways is ending blackout days. while american will change the number of miles to get an unrestricted free flight a 100- million dollar donation from marc and lynne benioff. will bring new names and funds to bay area children's hospitals. the donation will support programs in basic and clinical research at the two hospitals. the east bay hospital will now be known as u-c-s-f benioff children's hospital oakland. while the san francisco hospital will be sa known as u-c-s-f benioff children's hospital.

here are the big stories we're working on for you this morning. an 18-year old man is behind bars. after police say, they caught him exposing himself behind a pleasant hill elementary school. it happened just after noon along the creek behind pleasant hill elementary school. on oak park boulevard. no children were there at the time. dozens of passengers on a cruise ship sailing roundtrip between los angeles and san francisco. have come down with a stomach virus. a spokesperson for princess cruises says, 37 passengers on board the ship reported being sick with an illness linked to norovirus. when the first cases of the illness were reported, ship crews began dis-infecting surfaces. and passengers on board were encouraged to wash their hands. sick passengers were isolated in cabins.

measles cases are on the rise in california. and now a new case has been reported at u-c berkeley. a student there was isolated after testing positive for the virus friday. that brings the total number of confirmed measles cases in california to 51 this year. compared to only four reported cases at the same time last year. now officials at u-c berkeley are offering vaccination clinics and notifying students about health risks. especially for those who travel. health officials say, if you think you might be at risk. you should first check your immunization records. if you don't have your records, or don't know if you've been immunized, they say you should get tested. it was back in march of last year when 17-year-old hanren chang was crossing sloat blvd. on her birthday! she was struck and killed by a drunk driver now the man responsible for her death will spend only 6 months in jail 29-year-old kieren brewer was sentenced this morning for that accident. the judge going easy on brewer

who behind the wheel when chang who was a student at lowell high school was struck and killed last month brewer plead guilty to three felony charges including vehicular manslaughter and dui i spoke to the da's office on the phone today they tell me that the family of the young girl is not upset over the judges ruling saying they believe brewer is remorseful for what he did. now in addition to the six months brewer is facing he will also have to do 300 hours of community service and pay retribution and court fees. 'not guilty' pleas from many east tsk of the defendants facing federal corruption charges in san francisco. suspended state senator leland yee.pleaded not guilty to allegations of bribery and conspiracy to deal and import guns. his political consultant - keith jackson - also pleaded not guilty.to charges he facilitated a murder for hire.and

conspired with yee. the other key player in the case is notorious former gangster raymond 'shrimp boy' chow. he did not enter a plea, but his new attorney had an earful for the news. media. nearly two dozen people were arraigned yesterday. most will return to court on friday for another hearing. the arraignment for a former concord officer accused of stealing prescription drugs from senior citizens. has been postoned. in martinez the contra costa county public defender's office says, they are checking their files to see if matt switzer was involved in any of their cases. they say the crimes officer switzer is accused of. casts doubt on his relability as a witness.

assistant district attorney barry grove admits, this could jeapordize other criminal proscecutions. depending on the switzer's level of involvement in each case. san francisco police are still on the lookout for a group of vandals. who targeted smart cars -- but none has been vandalized since monday morning. officers say, beginning at one a-m monday. a group, in hooded sweatshirts, started their assault. three of the cars were tipped over and damaged in and around san francisco's bernal heights neighborhood. a fourth smart car was vandalized about a mile away, in the portola neighborhood.

salmon. into the sacramento river earlier today. the experiemnt is not only a part of increasing the salmon's chances of surviving the return trip to survival of the california recreational fishing industry. fishing provides $300 million a year to the bay area industry. if we did not continue to do this there wouldn't be any fish. there would not be in the fishing season. >>: each fish has a special tag implant which will help researchers determine their identity, when the adult salmon return back to the sacramento river to spawn. that should happen 3-years from now. a california bill aimed at ending killer whale shows at sea-world in san diego has been put on hold. it would also phase out the practice of keeping the huge animals in captivity in the first place.

rafael boy is considered a hero this morning after helping to save his father's life during an a snowball snowmobiling accident. bode bierdneau and his father jt for writing in the lake tahoe back country when j.t. got into an accident which snapped his leg. the accident was the father buried in the snow and partially trapped beneath the snow mobile. bodee was able to dig his father of the snow and later was able to fly down a tour group to get some help. for his father. search rescue crews followed the boy out to the accident site. the father was eventually helicoptered out for emergency surgery. he is currently recovering out for emergency surgery. he is currently recovering in hospital.
