escape and the notebook. jan wahl is on the phone. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. >> a big loss for hollywood. >> he was one of the only stars that made the transition from film to television. he was natural, he was likable. i got to have lunch with him at the silverado country club. he was promoting my name is phil w. he was so -- i mean he was nominated for an emmy for it. if you think about tv shows and some of his movies you realize he didn't use guns that much. i mean he had some, but it wasn't about killing people or aiming at people and missing like you see so much today. it was about his wit. he always fought with his wit and humor. he was that way in person too.
9:36 am
he's just terrific. >> one thing that stood out about james is that he seemed so natural. >> exactly what he was, witty, not easy, i would recommend people to read his book from 2011 called the garner files. he wrote an autobiography where he said he couldn't handle idiots, who said things that he thought was stupid. he was not one of these phony hollywood types. he would walk away and he would just be honest. he just didn't want to be inauthentic. he was a great western hero and a great actor in movies like the great escape and the children's hour. he could do it all and there's not many people like that at all. >> yes, he went to the drama easily and he made it effortless -- look effortless. so who does he leave behind? >> that's a good question.
9:37 am
i guess i remember so well, sexy movies like murphy's romance where he was nominated for an oscar. i need to look that up. that would be interesting to find out about the wives and all of that end of him. it's amazing that i know so little about it because his on camera persona was so fascinating. >> also, he was a very private person. to put james garner in perspective, he was one of the biggest star in the 60s. >> absolutely. he certainly was. his favorite movie was the americanizatin of emily. he was known for his show called maverick. it was clipt east wood's first

9:39 am
couldn't hear anything and i was asleep. i looked around my room, i smelled smoke and i could see a little bit of smoke in my room. >> he's a hero, he had to get up in his face. >> investigators think the fire may have started in the garage. they estimate the damage at $175,000. summer vacation is winding down for some parts of the country. students are getting ready to head back to class. parents will be dropping some serious cash to prepare for this school year. americans will spend about $26.5 billion on back to items. -- school items. the survey found families of high school students will spend the most and those with elementary students will spend the least. >> $700? what are they buy?

9:45 am
vowels. it's that ah. it sounds like sizzling bacon. why don't we roll that so you can hear it. >> hey guys, there's no reason why your phone should not be as glamorous as your shoes. check out the new sony ericsson. >> it is annoying. >> it's just hard to listen to. you go into a job interview, or a panelling agent. it's not a -- pageant. it's not a professional voice. >> something like that could get you out of a job. >> yes, people want to talk to people they want to listen to. they're going to end the interview early if they don't like how you sound. >> what are some exercises to do to get rid of that. >> so here's my disclaimer.
9:46 am
i'm going to share the exercise that worked for me. if you want permanent change, you need to go to a speech pathologist or a vocal course. i did and i learned these exercises. i had a great voice growing up and i consciously changed my voice to make it higher and into that little girl voice. i ended up hurting my vocal cords and i lost my voice for 9 weeks. >> this hits home for you. >> it really does. i got the idea to do this because i realize it was a grander problem when a couple of the younger girls i mentor had this problem. one of them relaxes your voice. it starts to make you conscious of your breath, creating breath support. so what you're going to do is when you breathe in, you're
9:47 am
going to say o, i, o, i, o, i. so tilt your neck back and as you lean in. repeat that. >> that takes some getting use to. >> what does it do? >> it just settles your voice in. it get it is air support in there. it teaches you to just feel the air going through as your con son nants and vowels are going through. so once again, it's o, i, o, i. >> it's an important thing that a lot of people don't pay attention to. just relax your voice. you have another tip? >> one of my favorites. so this is really my favorite. and every time i share this with someone, i do it privately. you realize that your muscle is a tongue. you want to stretch that tongue
9:48 am
out. it's such a big muscle and it can block your vocal cords, block the air and vocal cords from coming out. stretch it, down, to the side, and up. make sure you don't strain your tongue. >> pull a tongue muscle. >> i done that before. it's embarrassing. what you want to do is stretch it down first. to the sides. and other side. up. and straight out. >> okay. >> and you can automatically hear it in my voice. it just relaxes it. >> how many times should you repeat that? >> i do it twice before i go into a presentation. now before you run and you exercise, you stretch. after you run and you exercise,
9:49 am
you stretch as well. >> do the same thing. >> and i understand you have another one as well. >> a lot of the girls have these high pitched little girl voices. one of the things my vocal coaches taught me is to do exercises like you would do if you were a singer. use the vowels, a, e, i, o, u. dip your voice lower. a, e, i, o, u, u, u, u. it just expands your vocal range. >> do you do them in combination? >> i don't do it all at once. i do the breathing exercise, then the tongue exercise. here's another great one for diction and rounding out those vowels. one of the things when you have
9:50 am
that vocal fry, it's squeezing. you want to open everything up. so that song, rain drop on roses, it's from the sound of music. you don't want to sing it. i'm not a singer, just warning you. rain drops, on, roses, and, with skuz, on kittens. >> so over overemphasize each vowel. >> yes, feel that air circulating through. >> great tips and i think you're right. doing it in private will be helpful [ laughter ] helpful [ laughter ] >> it's great to see huh, fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more on car insurance. everybody knows that. well, did you know words really can hurt you?
9:51 am
what...? jesse don't go! jesse...no! i'm sorry daisy, but i'm a loner. and a loner gotta be alone. heee yawww! geico. fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more. jesse? hey! i found my true love, livin' in a sweet dream. singin' my favorite song and it all starts with you. whoa-oh-oh-oh, all this goodness... what matters most should always come first. which is why whole grain is the first ingredient in every general mills big g cereal. and why we never use high fructose corn syrup. general mills. look for the big g. it means goodness first.
