sell them in the lobby. she was a sweetheart. i have known her over 25 years. >> authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim. no one else was hurt. no word on what caused the fire. new at 5:00, a limo bursts into flames while on the road this morning in of vallejo. luckily there were no passengers inside. just the driver. he says he got out just in time. >> i medicalled oil and i raised the hood, and all of a sudden it just -- the flames were coming out from the back of the engine. i got my fire extinguisher but it wouldn't put it out. >> the driver was able to get some valuables out of the car before the blaze spread. once crews arrived to extinguish the fire it took less than 10 minutes.

hot weather around the bay area heading into the weekend. this is video from los gatos. some places were expected to hit triple-digit temperatures. erica, i was in san francisco, and it did feel warm. >> you were lucky, annie. san francisco is the only spot that broke a record. downtown san francisco came in at 85, breaking the old record of 82 from 1973. so we are still waiting for the official records but boy was it hot around the entire bay area. right now we are not looking at the afternoon highs. we are looking at current conditions. so fairfield still at 101. san francisco has backed off, now at 71. half-moon bay, if you went to the beach, temperatures in the 70s. satellite and radar shows clear and dry conditions. we do have high pressure building in overhead, so that's going to allow for seasonably warm conditions to continue on as we head into next week. but that sea breeze will pick

up by tomorrow. we will still see hot conditions inland. a minimal fog on sunday but warm weather continues as we head into the work week. details in my next report. a possible major escalation in the violence in the mideast. kron 4's jeff bush shows us how the gun conflict has spread to the west bay where at least two palestinians have been killed by israeli soldiers. >> reporter: rage in gaza over the killing of children spread to the west bank. a march on an israeli settlement in the palestinian territory met by soldiers. they opened fire with live ammunition, tear gas, and rubber bullets. this 9-year-old said he came to support gaza. the militants gaining support beyond their base there. in cairo, secretary of state john kerry concedes his negotiations have fallen short.

the netherlands. malaysian airlines flight 17 was shot down more than a week ago. international representatives are still searching and finding human remains. >> reporter: military cargo planes bring dozens of coffins to the netherlands. officials expect to finish this solemn transfer of bodies by saturday. but after the crash of mh7 the gruesome process of recovering remains is much more difficult than simply counting the number of caskets. >> 200 body bags doesn't mean we have 200 people. it might be more, it might be less. we're absolutely sure there are still remains which we want to recover, which we want to bring back to the netherlands. >> reporter: international monitors watched over by their military escorts searched through debris fields spanning several miles. in a wooded area they find a piece of the fuselage, the biggest yet. its fall presumably cushioned by the trees, some windows

this morning -- >> breaking news. major problems for bart this morning. >> first with breaking news. >> it shut down the coliseum station. the ripple affect is throughout the entire system. >> kron 4 morning news. it's been called brown is the new green. a new push to get feel to save water by cutting back on watering their lawn. kron 4 shows us how it's working out for one homeowner. >> reporter: this lawn in los gatos is getting a drink of water just once a week. it is going a little brown, but its a professional landscaper, says he cut the flow by some 60%. >> this lawn has been watered one time a week for the past two weeks. with water conservation in early spring, i took one day

off. that's 33% savings right there. >> reporter: he is on board with the valley water district's new conservation message that brown is the new green, as this chart shows, outdoor watering accounts for 59% of a typical homeowner's consumption. as you can see, this lawn still looks pretty good. >> something else to watch for, the experts tell us if you have a spot like this, that looks like it is a little too brown, you could have a bad nozzle, so it's important to stay on top of your maintenance. >> reporter: he suggests water one to two times a week. >> it's not perfect. it's not a screaming green lawn, but that's just fine. we're in a serious drought. >> reporter: by going brown, most lawn owners can meet the call for 20% conservation in one fell swoop. and this man says that screaming green lawn will come back with the return of winter

rains. and you are taking a look at some video from oakland. blue skies, a lot of sunshine, folks getting out on the water. we did see temperatures close to 90 degrees. maybe not rung weather but a lot of people did have their shorts and tank tops on. as we're taking a live look outside from our mount tam cam, you can see all of the bridges dealing with clear conditions. 101 right now in fairfield, 82 in oakland, so temperatures have backed off a bit. earlier we did see a reading of 85 degrees in downtown san francisco. that actually shattered an old record set back in the '70s. futurecast 4 highlighting tomorrow morning. we are going to start the day off with sit, even some 70s for the del that. but you will see we really warm things up by lunchtime. 80s inside the bay. we'll see 90s for places like fairfield and livermore.

police and bomb sniffing dogs were brought in but did not find any threat. this is video from our helicopter partnership with abc7 news. the station reopened around 9:00 this morning but the closure stranded hundreds of commuters. keeping students safe on campus. that's what's on the mind of emergency crews at this drill. >> the goal here was to make this look very realistic so even the officers and fire personnel had no idea what to expect until they arrived p on the campus. the drill got underway just after 9:00 this morning, and officials made this as realistic as possible. the drill came with simulated gunfire and lots of emergency personnel. now, this drill is put on by san jose state university police. san jose fair and police as well as the santa clara county sheriff's office and university employees also partook in the drill this morning. the california state university system requires each campus to

undergo a full scale emergency response drill every five years. san jose state officials tell me they made it an active shooter drills, citing the many school shootings we have seen in recent years. >> going back to columbine, what the public probably doesn't see is that campuses that are working very hard to vastly improve how we respond in situations like this one. it is a topic that is discussed almost every day on a campus like ours. so this exercise makes a lot of sense. >> reporter: and one of the key training elements today was coordinating between the police department and fire department to get officials inside the building while an active shooter was still on scene. authorities tell me if fire officials can get inside the building and get the victims out of the building within one hour that gives them a much better chance of surviving. that was just one of many critical skills crews worked on today. mike pelton, kron 4 news.

california taxpayers are shelling out hundreds of thousands of dollars a year for the state dmv to accept or reject personalized license plates m. of the requests are either funny, offensive, or just plain explicit. the response by dmv workers may raise eyebrows as well. >> reporter: the dmv gets more than 91,000 personalized plate orders each year. >> we review each single one of those. >> reporter: requests like fat ace. dmv said fat is offensive. or this one. the driver said my dog is my best friend and i love her. she's all i have.

the dmv said ganja is a term for pot. denied. and this from a movie. dmv workers said because of the word kill, denied. five employees will be assigned depending on the work load. taxpayers fund their combined $200,000 salary. they write their own response for each request. this person requested i hate dmv. driver gave no reason. worker wrote, i think it's funny, but it's on record ons acceptable. how about this one? the driver said he's involved in breeding sheep. denied. coming up at 530, the hunt for a nrn california patient who authorities say is a huge health risk to people around

yee. he is accused of taking bribes in exchange for his votes in favor of several legislative bills including one on medical marijuana. in march, yee was indicted on public corruption and other charges. the lawmaker was just one of 29 people indicted in a sweeping fbi investigation. today's 88-page indictment also charges chow. joining us now is kron 4's political analyst. michael, tell us about the new charges. >> what's really interesting is that they just completely upped the ante. they added racketeering. when you look at it, it's racketeering in terms of his campaign committee, which is very unique and very rarely ever charged. but they basically said that his campaign committee for both mayor and for secretary of state was a vehicle to get

campaign contributions from bribes to exchange money, essentially for votes. they also added two new counts of extortion. this gets -- this is going to get on probably sports entertainment tonight because it involves an nfl owner and the california state athletic commission which governs mixed martial arts competition in california, and essentially what this charge has said, he allegedly said to these individuals, i have got votes on this committee, i control this committee, if you want this bill to pass, you have got to go through me, and it is going to cost you $60,000, according to the indictment. they also -- the upshot of this is that he is probably -- the number of years that he's potentially facing has now gone from 120 to 185 years in jail. the fine has now gone to somewhere around $2 million to 3 million. and it involves the forfeiture of all your assets.

i am wondering if the federal government is going to move to freeze the campaign committee, because a lot of people were wondering early on if he could have used that $500,000 in his bank to pay his lawyers. if they freeze that it is going to impact his legal defense. >> among the charges today he is alleged also to be involved in the medical marijuana dispensaries. >> some person said he was from arizona, wand to come and set up medical marijuana dispensary. yee allegedly said, i can help you do. that i will introduce you to a couple of people. what's interesting is that it's obvious that they had a lot of tape on this, because the conversations are very specific. they talk about the fact that he said this is going to be a heavy lift, why won't they give me more money for this, this is what it is going to cost to do business. and as i said when this first came out, it's as if "american hustle" landed in chinatown, is

the way it all plays out on tape. >> it was a far reaching investigation. they even looked at mayor ed leigh. >> the fbi engages in these fishing expeditions. "american hustle" is very accurate in they do these kinds of things. the fact is the fbi tends to target people who, quite frankly, one of the things that disturbed me about what was revealed in the paper is how many -- all the people they targeted were essential minorities, and especially after i will can americans who were not, by the way, named or indicted or any allegations of wrong doing. >> do you think any more charges are possible? >> no, i think this is probably it. this is going to set a baseline for either plea negotiations or the trial. it will probably come in sometime next year. >> thank you, mike could. he is on twitter if you would like to connect with him. a stockton man may be a

danger to public health. >> reporter: this is a tuberculosis patient that could put the public's health at risk. an arrest warrant is out for the man who stopped taking his tb treatment and was last seen at this capri motel in stockton. >> he used to stand outside or sit outside. >> reporter: but that was two months ago. he left without a trace, leaving officials worried. >> he may become contagious. right now we don't even know if he is or is not contagious because we haven't seen him. >> reporter: authorities hope to contain him to ensure he gets the proper treatment. he could face up to one year in prison for failing to comply with health officers. >> and health officials say they do see cases like this about one to two times per year. two women accused of beating a woman to death outside a santa ana nightclub have been found guilty.

the two were convicted of voluntary manslaughter and assault. prosecutors say they kicked a woman in the head after she was knocked down outside a club in january. the woman was declared brain dead and removed from life support two days later. the two women will be innocenced in september. some parents in orange county have contacted authorities after finding dolls that looked like their children on their doorsteps. >> reporter: many nerves were rattled tin san clemente community today as news spread that someone is leaving porcelain dolls on the front door steps of homes where little girls live. >> i would say creepy or very unusual. >> reporter: lieutenant jeff with the sheriff's department says at least eight families have had dolls left on their porches in the past few days. >> there's an indication by some of the parents that the dolls resemble their daughters. we're talking about children here. >> reporter: most are around

the age of 10 and attend the same elementary school. officials are investigating the connection and whether this is a prank or a sexual predator. no notes or threats were attached. the victims and their neighbors were too scared to talk with us on camera but these moms with daughters similar ages were freaked out. >> you don't hear or see anything like that. only in the movies. >> oh, i would freak out. it would scare me. >> we're in a bubble here insouth orange county. >> i would just be really scared. i don't think i could sleep at night. >> reporter: in a strange twist, another woman who didn't want to be on camera showed us these wooden dolls she found on her steps two weeks ago. she has a five and a half-year- old daughter. when she heard about the news she decided it was time to file a police report. >> the orange county sheriff's department announced on twitter they had found the person who was leaving those dolls. deputies said the person's actions were intended as goodwill. coming up at 5:45, turns out the company that targets

a new study finds that practice doesn't always make perfect. researchers find that practicing something doesn't necessarily play as a big role in skill or performance as previously thought. they conducted analysis of several different studies. they found that deliberate practice only accounts for 12% improvement in performance. so most improvement comes from something other than practice, like from age or memory. researchers found that practicing does help more with some activities rather than others, and these include games, music, and sports.

the victims of target's data breach were told the experian credit company would help protect them but think again. >> reporter: it seems like companies just can't keep your data say. remember the big target breach, over 00 million customers? target sent them to experian. but it turns out experian had its own data leak. one of its subsidiaries actually sold the data to a fraud story in vietnam. the leak was plugged before

target sent its system to experian but it shows that even companies like this have problems. this happened more than a year ago. experian has stayed quiet about the details. a spokesman called it an unfortunate issue. target and experian both say the service sun related to the incident. >> in addition to target, here is a list of other stores believed to be hit bey data breaches within the last year. this week we learned stubhub accounts were broken into. neiman marcus, 1.1 customers affected. you may remember there was also a breach at michaels arts and crafts as well as sally's

beauty supply. 1,000 macy's workers rejected a contract proposal and have authorized a strike. almost 90% of the employees voted against that. if it happenings, the strike would only affect macy's stores here in san francisco. one of the big items up for debate is sales commissions. the san francisco bay company charles schwab is getting big money to open new locations in texas. it will expand in el paso and austin. much of that money is coming from governor rick perry's texas before prize fund. the new el paso locations are expected to bring in more than 400 new jobs and more than $21 million for the state. it was not too long ago that toyota announced a move

from california to texas which sent the transfer of thousands of jobs to the new american headquarters. texas offered the japanese automaker $40 million to relocate to suburban dallas. that ended toyota's more than 50-year presence in southern california. toyota will start up in 2017. we're focusing on the weather. the hottest day of the week, live outside in walnut creek. right now we are seeing temperatures in the triple digits. take a look at the thermometer. 01. that's not even the afternoon high. that's after temperatures have cooled off a few degrees. as we take a look at current temperatures over the entire bay area, 70 in richmond. hayward at 87 degrees. we are talking about aing strong ridge of high pressure out there. it is continuing to build, so that's why we are seeing temperatures much warmer than what we saw yesterday. now, into tomorrow we will see slightly cooler conditions, but we will start off the morning with 60s and 70s for the delta.

as we put the clock into motion you will see rapid warming approaching lunchtime with 90s already for the livermore valley and the south bay. as we head into the 3:00 hour, expect 70s, and 90s for the warmest inland communities. as we break down the afternoon highs, fremont hitting 83, 90 in santa clara. boy is that a difference compared to today. temperatures moved as much as 10 degrees thanks to a pronounced sea breeze. vallejo 82, but i think a lot of people are welcoming the cooler temperatures anticipated this weekend. san francisco, more than 10 degrees cooler than today. oakland only in the upper 70s, napa hitting a high of 84. as we look ahead, taking a look at the gilroy garlic festival, today was the hottest day of the three-day stretch. tomorrow we are anticipating a mild start, mid-90s for the afternoon, but sunday probably the coolest day to attend.

friday. accused a livermore soccer coach with sexually abusing a child. 26-year-old jesse slickerstein has been charged with committing a lewd october on a child under the age of 14. police say the incident happened earlier this week at carenay indoor sports in livermore where he is a soccer coach. parents were shocked by the news. >> i have always felt very safe at caber 98, it's -- cabernet, it is an unfortunate situation that this happened and maybe they need to take steps in the future to look into people who are heading up these camps more. >> cabernet sports suspended slicker and says it is cooperating fully with the investigation. police say slicker previously worked for world cup soccer camps and clinics based out of las gath. slicker will enter a plea late next month. new charges filed in the

federal corruption case against suspended state senator leland yee. the san francisco lawmaker now faces racketeering charges. the federal grand jury added the indictment today accusing yee of taking bribes in exchange of his votes in favor of several legislative bills including one on medical marijuana. in march yee was invited -- 29 people indicted in a sweeping fbi investigation of the trial of the alleged leader of a china town mob. today's indictment -- the coliseum bart station up again. the station was immediately evacuated around 7:30 this morning after a 911 caller reported hearing about a bomb threat. the closure caused systemwide delays. police and bomb sniffing dogs moved in but did not find any explosives and the station

donna christian a few days later. they say christian waited for the kids to come out of the store then twisted the girl's arm, causing sapphire to drop her bag of money. christian allegedly grabbed the cash and took off. she is now behind bars on a $100 bail. a week later and the kids are happy to reunite with the officers who investigated their case. after a hardy dose of sugar, sapphire was able to express how she is feeling now. >> happy, excited. >> reporter: brother and sister are excited to have more candy to sell. they have different reasons. >> buy my own phone and try and organize my own birthday party. >> reporter: the idea of selling sweets was devised by their adoptive mother and their school counselor as a form of therapy. their mom said sapphire and jaden who had been in 14 different foster homes before being adopted had been taught to steal by their biological parents and despite being in a stable family now, they keep getting into trouble at school

there's more than just dead birds testing positive for west nile virus in the east bay. a contra costa mosquito and vector control district says they are also finding chickens and mosquitoes infected with the virus. officials say a total of five chickens and four groups of mosquitoes have been found with west nile in recent weeks.

the infested mosquitoes were found in discovery bay. dead birds the virus were found in cities in concordia around danville and the chickens were found in oakley. the nicotine and cigarettes may raise a person's risk of committing suicide. the new study found when states passed tougher smoking laws, their suicide rates went down, almost 15% in some states. the study also found that states where the law was not as strict suicide rates rose 6% between 1990 and 2006. researchers say the depended dense on nick -- dependency on nicotine can make a person feel anxious or depressed. up next brown is the new green. and more angry clashes today between israel and hamas. the sea fire now -- the cease fire now in place as the casualties mount.

mali. french officials confirmed there are no survivors. 116 people on board. crews did recover at least one of the plane's black boxes but we are told the plane disintegrated on impact. the plane reportedly disappeared from radar after changing its flight path because of bad weather. the third major international aviation disaster in this past week and despite losing two planes in more than 500 -- and more than 500 passengers this year, malaysia airlines says it will not file for bankruptcy but it might go private as it struggles to stay in business. back in march, malaysian airlines flight 370 vanished without a trace with 229 people on board, believed to be in a remote section of the indian ocean, then last week mh17 was reportedly shot down by pro- russian separatists over war torn ukraine, 238 people on that flight. experts say the airline will not survive more than a year without significant funding. a business in oakland high- rise is damaged following a

fire this afternoon. fire officials say it started before 12:30 at webster and 13th streets. they say it was controlled within a half hour and most of the damage was contained to a business on the first floor. but an apartment unit did receive smoke damage. officials say they think it was started by a cigarette. no one was injured. check this out, a limo bursting into flames while on the road in vallejo this morning. it happened on fairgrounds drive. luckily there were no passengers in the car. it appears to have started in the engine. firefighters sprayed the limo down with foam and water to extinguish the blaze. the driver was able to get valuables out of the car before the blaze spread. investigators say a person found dead this morning in an apartment fire appeared to be a hoarder. fire officials say the blaze broke out after 5:00 a.m. at a park merced apartment building. they say there were several small fires and a clout -- in a cluttered unit near the bottom of the building.

one neighbor says she knew the victim well. >> she was a sweetheart. known her for over 25 years. i've lived in park merced for over 25 years. it's unfortunate. you know, she was a great person. >> the woman who died has been the only one in the unit -- appears to have been the only one in the unit. no other injuries were reported. in the south bay, a new push to battle the drought by getting people to put less water on their lawns. like the sign on this lawn in las gath says it's -- los gatos says brown is the new green. this lawn being watered once a week and that represents a savings of about 60%. there are a few brown spots here and there but the owner, a professional landscaper says the grass is fairly drought tolerant and will easily bounce back when winter rains return. >> and i went from three days to two days to now one day, 60% water savings. it's not perfect, it's not a spring and green lawn, it's offer color, it's browning out a bit but that's fine.

yesterday. you can clearly see that. looks like temperatures will be back in the low 90s for campbell, santa clara, fremont at 83 degrees tomorrow afternoon, 86 in redwood city. now, today was actually the hottest day of the week but you will notice no triple digits for the east bay, fairfield at 95, 98 degrees in pittsburgh, upper 60s for richmond, low 80s in san leandro. downtown san francisco today broke a record high coming in at 85, tomorrow i think we are back in the low 70s. napa at 84, 71 degrees in berkeley and upper 70s for those of you in oakland. if you're heading to the giants game this evening against the l.a. dodgers, first pitch at 7:15, expect temperatures in the mid- 70s so nice and warm at the ballpark but it will cool down during the course of the game, by the time you leave the ballpark i think we will see temperatures in the upper 60s. here's a look at your seven-day forecast -- seven day around the bay forecast, fairly warm conditions into the weekend. now temperatures won't be as warm with that sea breeze kicking in with mid-90s

being paid. the california policy center today released the compensation data for k through 12 schools. the information was collected under the public records act and found that california teachers meaning an average $85,000 a year in pay and benefits. but the authors say the report shows exorbitant pay and widespread practice much employees -- of employees being paid and collecting pension at the same time. only 52% of school districts provided data. the report lists compensation for more than 580,000 employees by name. if you would like to see what's happening in your own school district, we have put the link to the report on our website at kron4.com. amazon stocks took a major hit thursday after the company announced a record quarterly loss. the online retailer says its sales for this quarter were down $126 million, despite sales being up 23%, the big store says the loss of amazon spending on new products and services. that includes its new sunday delivery service, the fire tv

lewd acts with a child. the alleged incidents happened earlier this week during the lunch hour. police say the accused, 26-year- old jesse slicker is a soccer coach at cabernet sports. he's now been suspended, pending the outcome of the investigation. in livermore, dan kerman, kron4 news. here in los gatos an effort to ratchet up awareness about the drought. it's an effort to spread the conservation gospel that brown is the new green. the professional landscaper showing us his own lawn which he says he's doing with 60% less water. down to a schedule of watering just once a week, says it won't hurt anything but lawn will bounce back when winter rains return and encouraging his customers to do the same. in san jose, emergency crews took part in an active shooter drill on the san jose university campus. the drill took place inside the main library and involved university police, san jose

fire and police and the santa clara county sheriff's office. the goal was to practice response and coordination among agencies. the california state university system requires each campus to undergo a full scale emergency response once every five years. san jose state officials tell me they chose to make it an act of shooter -- active shooter drill because of all the school shootings we have seen in recent years. in san francisco, the story of two kids getting robbed on a city street gets a sweet ending thanks to a local candy company. police say the 8-year-old girl and 9-year-old brother were out selling candy as a way to raise cash when a 46-year-old woman allegedly mugged the girls for their money. today the kids got a $45 check to cover the lost funds and $1000 worth of candy from the owners of the powell's sweet shop chain. >> as an extra treat after sapphire and jaden loaded up their candy, they took a cable car ride with the two investigating officers who helped solve the case. a sweeting end for both the kids and the cops.

maureen kelly, kron4 news. and we are still enjoying clear skies and sunshine around the entire bay area, but the triple digits really starting to back off here, so it's still fairly warm in concord at 99 degrees, livermore right now at 98, san francisco has dropped into the low 80s, actually saw record breaking high of 85 earlier this afternoon. as we focus on your miles today, you will notice -- highs today you will notice a difference. no triple digits to speak of but we are still talking about temperatures much warmer than this time of year, fairfield at 96, upper 70s for downtown san francisco and looks like tomorrow may be the day to escape to the beach with temperatures in the low 70s if you're heading down to half moon bay. so your headlines show that we will still deal with hot weather into tomorrow but you will notice it's going to be a bit cooler, we have that sea breeze kicking in. expect minimal fog on sunday, even cooler conditions but all in all still going to be a fairly warm workweek before temperatures back off as we head into next friday.

here's stanley roberts who found some people behaving badly. >> more to the west skate park than just kids hopping the fence. it has to do with a resident who can usually see the skate park from a balcony until it landed on his doorstep. >> i was attacked here in front of my house by a group of skateboarders that were drunk and stoned and didn't like the fact that i didn't want them here at 11:30 at night on a sunday night. >> reporter: the weapons they used -- >> actually attacked me with a skateboard. i got hit in the head and ended up with stitches and, you know, bruises and everything, actually had to go on job interviews last week in a suit with all that stuff going on. >> reporter: in fact this is video from the hospital where a doctor stitched up a cut over his left eye. now he still has brewings from the a-- bruising from attacks. >> there were six young adults on my front steps 11:30 at night making a lot of noise, rolling up joints, drinking beers, i asked them to leave

a canadian flight to panama had to be turned around today after one passenger made a terrorist threat mid-air. this is passenger video of police boarding the plane with guns drawn after it returned to toronto. police say they arrested aly shahigh. police say he yelled at a flight attendant over headphones. nasa may not have the money to launch a new deep space rocket by their goal of 2017. that's according to a report from the government accountability office. it puts the space launch system program at high risk of missing the deadline. the group estimates nasa may need an additional $400 million added to the $12 billion project to meet the deadline for launch. nasa acknowledged there's a 90% chance at this time the rocket will not make its launch date.
