started around 3:15 pm on saturday afternoon and right now it's of yosemite national park, just to the north of highway 140 >> reporter:as of monday afternoon, this wildfire.. which is burning in the rugged hills north of the small town of el portal.. has consumed about 2600 acres and is only 5 percent contained. >> reporter:the fire is burning both in yosemite national park and in the stanislaus national forest. >> reporter:over 700 fire fighting resources are currently battling this wildfire. fire figthers are dealing with bone dry conditions, and the flames are burning in very remote rugged terrain. >> reporter:so far 1 structure has been lost, more homes are being threatened. fire fighter strike teams have been deployed to protect those buildings. >> reporter: >> reporter:so far the fire has been kept to the north of highway 140, but the blaze has the potential to keep moving north. as a precaution big oak flat road which leads from highway 120 into the yosemite valley has been closed. >> reporter:meanwhile, the national park service says that yosemite is still open.

the yosemite valley can still be accessed via highway 140 but as you can see in these pictures from monday afternoon... there is a lot of smoke settling in the valley around popular spots like half dome, el capitan and yosemite falls. >> pam: bay area firefighters are among those now on the front lines battling the sand fire in amador county. >> pam: kron four's rob fladeboe >> pam: >> reporter:with multiple fires to manage, calfire dispatchers at this and other command centers are moving firefighters and equipment around california like so many pieces on a chess board. as of monday morning, 35 bay area firefighters got orders to head for the sand fire. >> '. so we sent a first strike team on saturday.that's a

>> pam: a heartbreaking end to a family outing. >> catherine: a georgia man is dead and his 9-year-old daughter still in critical condition tonight. after they were hit by a small plane making an emergency landing on a florida beach. it turns out the man was an army sgt. who was celebrating his 9th wedding anniversary. >> catherine: "the last thing you expect is a plane coming down and hitting someone. that just doesn't happen." >>this teenager says that even though he took these photos -- the tragedy on the beach still doesn't seem real. >> catherine: around 3 pm sunday - the pilot of this 1972 piper cherokee radioed in that his plane couldn't make it back to the airport -- and he'd try to land on a nearby beach. >>"and that's exactly what he did. etc" >> catherine: but a family happened to be walking on the beach just as the plane came down. hitting and killing the father - 36-year-old ommy irizarry, and badly injuring his 9-year-old daughter. ommy had been celebrating a wedding anniversary - and was surrounded by friends and family.

national park. this wildfire is burning just to the north of highway one-forty, near the town of el portal. it's actually burning inside yosemite and in the stanislaus national forest. twenty-six hundred acres have been charred and fire crews have this blaze just 5 percent contained. so far, 1 structure has been lost and crews are working to protect dozens of other homes. also, big oak flat road between groveland and yosemite has been shutdown. the national park service says that yosemite is still open, but visitors will have to use highway one-forty to get into and out of the yosemite valley. . >> reporter:finally, cal fire is saying that the sand fire near plymouth was started when a car drove into some dry grass and the exact cause of the yosemite fire is still under investigation. in the newsroom, charles clifford kron 4 news. >> pam: among the nearly two- thousand firefighters battling 'the sand fire'. are at least 35 from the bay area. >> pam: in the past 48 hours, two strike teams got orders to head for amador county. the first is comprised of three engines and 18 firefighters. they left on saturday. >> pam: then on sunday, a
