5:00 pm
building. you can still smoke but firefighters have a good handle on the fire. and there's no risk of flames spreading to the other buildings. let's roll the video because you know we've been showing you this fire is really a sight to see, it was a big fire started about a two alarm fire. it broke out just after 1:00 this afternoon. now firefighters at first had a hard time getting to the second and third story floors of this building. it's a three story building that thick black smoke filled the air. we're told there was a lot of plastic in the building and that black smoke very toxic. people had to cover up their face out here. it was really nasty for a long time. now, we have learned the name of the store was big house incorporated. they sold backpacks, innovateties -- and novelties
5:01 pm
and so forth. officials said they have had complaints in the past. >> we've had complaints. they've said hey, this place looks unsafe. you can't get through the aisle. so we came out and directed them to widen an aisle way. they complied and they were not sited. not sited either time. so i got new information from my fire marshal. in 2013 2013 we got a similar call saying it seems unsafe. it seems really crowded. so they went out and deemed it reasonably unsafe. so they were not sited. >> reporter: and still no official word what sparked it. but you can see a lot of activity out here. a lot of road closures out here as well. this happening right in the middle of rush hour traffic. so the surrounding roads here around mission street and 23rd street are absolutely gridlock. it is a mess out here because you have major section of the
5:02 pm
road closed off. also a lot of people have been out here coming out here to take a look at this fire too. obviously quite the scene. now, we do know like you mentioned three people were injured. two of those firefighters all three of those people were taken to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. we're told everybody should be okay. that's the very latest out here. we're waiting on a briefing that's going to happen any minute. we should get more information out of that. as soon as we get more info we will bring it to you. reporting live from the mission district, scott ray. >> you can see the top of the building that gaping, several gaping holes in the rooftops there as firefighters tried to knock down these dangerous flames. again this is in the mission district. this is a tight community densely populated and this is a huge building in that community affecting a large area. that's why it was so dramatic and why the evacuations were necessary in the midst of all of this. law enforcement maureen kelly was just a block away when the fire broke out.
5:03 pm
and was one of the first reporters to make it to the scene of the fire. here's what she saw. >> reporter: thick smoke was already pouring out of the building as the first fire crews arrived on scene. the clouds billowing out so heavy at times they filled the street making it hard to see and breathe. as the smoke got heavier, police cleared the immediate area of bystander to get them out of harm's way. some walked out covering their mouths and coughing. police then quardened off the area. >> the air is getting bad now. >> reporter: this woman who you see collapsed on the ground is the owner of the computer store next to where the fire started. she was treated by paramedics. the witness says he believes she fainted due to stress.
5:04 pm
>> she doesn't know at this point where the store is being hit by fire, certainly a possibility. it's a lot of stress, it's her store. >> this is a live picture from our helicopter partnership with abc7. this does give you a sense of how densely how populated that neighborhood is. and the area affected. we're looking at video from earlier today when the fire was at its height. look at that black smoke, thick black smoke pouring from the building. you heard a fire chief in an earlier interview that the building had been interviewed by fire officials before because of concerns of how cluttered it was. and kathleen hinnas has been here all day since the start of the fire. she's here now with the dramatic picture.
5:05 pm
it really was amazing. >> reporter: it was amazing to see it all unfold. you're looking at viewer video. this is a good example of how quickly this thing took off. you see the smoke there at first it was fairly light in color. pouring from the rooftop of the building. and quite quickly turned much darker and heavier and it really did get intense. so this was someone obviously in a neighboring building getting a close look in a short time that smoke really just filled the streets in that area. people have also been sending us photos from different areas throughout the mission district. and this was someone a few blocks away. but at the height of this they're saying yeah, you can really see that smoke from all over the city. and the fire crews working with equipment they were on the scene of course quickly. the fire moving from two alarms to five alarms. crews all over the place. people told to stay back but a lot of people with cameras who got curious and were down there and again the smoke at that
5:06 pm
point you see it quite light was a big concern. scott wright pointed out a lot of plastic burning in that building they say it was just piled from floor to ceiling with a lot of plastic material and that was one of the reasons the smoke was really pretty hazardous. we're always happy to get your photos and your video. you can e-mail them to us at breaking news @ kron4.com. >> as you know fighting an urban fire is such a different kind of challenge for fire crews. because of the concern of the people who live in a community. the businesses that are in a community. much different than the many wildfires we've covered over the many years we've worked together as you know. jaquelin bennett standing by. >> it has been kind of breezy. wind gusts the closest observations to the fire. the one that says 20-mile an hour wind gusts right now. the fire is just a little bit
5:07 pm
more southeast of that location. but we have seen some gusty winds as you see 20-miles-an- hour there. plenty of observations showing 40-mile an hour winds. the wind direction has also been shifting. right now it's pretty much out of the west. the wind breeze can -- the wind breeze has been kicking up. we want to show you video from this fire from earlier today. right now crews are kind of just keeping an eye on things pretty much knocked down the bulk of the flames involved here. but this was a massive fire fight for them. this fire started just after 1:00 in the afternoon. and here it is 5:00 and fire crews are still on the scene trying to make sure that all of the hot spots are knocked down and to make sure that community is safe. one of our many reporters in the area dan ruben is standing by now with an interview with a
5:08 pm
fire official, dan. >> reporter: obviously we saw the very active scene out here. in fact, we're joined live now by assistant fire chief david franklin to give us the latest on the fire. what do we know so far about how this thing started. >> our fire team got dispatched. we came out of the station seven when we got to 19th and mission we knew there was a fire with a large amount of black smoke showing. it appears to be a two story commercial building. like a little five and dimestore that we have a lot of here in the mission street. a lot of black smoke coming out of the building. no visible fire: we attempted to make an interior fight on the fire. due to worsening conditions and the amount of fire that was inside the building. we pulled the crew out and set up for exterior containment.
5:09 pm
we kept it contained to the building and the adjacent building. heavy damage in the exposure building to the right of it. at this time we've had three minor injuries, to fire fighters, one minor injury to a civilian. we'll be out here throughout the evening keeping a watch. >> and the impact on the surrounding area. do we still have power knocked out? >> the power is knocked out between 22nd and 23rd on mission and between 23rd and half way up to 24th. we're working with pg & e right now to get that restored except for the three buildings involved. so we're working to get that as soon as possible to get restored. we're also working to get buildings cleared to get the occupants residents and the buildings on both mission between 22nd and 23rd back into their buildings. >> reporter: and you're working
5:10 pm
to get tenants back in. >> no we're working with the red cross. we hope to get them back by the evening. where the fire was was a business so there were no residents in those. we're working to get residents back into their buildings. >> and there's word that firefighters had been called on for dangerous conditions. do you know anything about that? >> i don't know anything about that. that is all under investigation. >> dan ruben, kron4 news. >> as we take you back to the live picture and the crews still trying to make sure those hot spots are taken care of. there was new information to come out of that interview that daniel ruben just conducted with the fire official.
5:11 pm
for one there were three firefighters who suffered minor injuries. power is off in the area of mission between 22nd and mostly all the way to 24th street. that power is out. pg & e is in the area. the building where this all started, big house inc. is reportedly a total loss from this fire. and there are still a couple of hundred people out of their buildings at this hour. although, fire officials do expect them back before the night is over. let's check in now with kron4, because traffic is affecteded in this densely populated area. phillip what's going on traffic wide? >> reporter: well pam, muni is experiencing some delays. i'm at the bus stop at 24th and mission just outside of the b.a.r.t. station. where there are some delays being experienced. this bus stop carrying the 14, the 14 limited and 49. i spoke to one of the bus
5:12 pm
drivers who said he has been driving up mission and being diverted on 20th street and taking south van nuys to go back to 24th and back up to mission. some delays in that area but they're just trying to avoid this fire area then getting back on to mission street. some of the delays also result of bus riders asking what's going on. they see the spectacle just down the street a block away. and when the bus driver stopped and maybe sometimes the buses have been full because a lot of people are riding the muni today. they've been asking questions about that fire, that's put the bus driver in a bind. he's had to stop at the stop a little later or longer than usual. and then he's on his way and just a few seconds ago, actually just stopped his car behind me in the middle of the road and that caused a brief delay. over all not as bad as you would think. when i was leaving the studio to get here i took south van nuys myself and i stopped by the area of cesar chavez and
5:13 pm
highway 101 to see what that was looking like to see if there was any residual effect from the traffic issues here six or seven blocks down the road. that was not the case. traffic is moving well down the road at least since 4:00. it looks like people have adhered to their alerts. all of the news alerts we've been sending out all day to avoid this area because it looks like less people are in this area it seems. >> again our breaking news this evening a five alarm fire in san francisco's mission district. largely knocked down by fire crews at this hour. we'll have much more ahead on the fire and of course the no rush, andy. come on. with the chase mobile app you can get a lot done in a little amount of time from transferring funds wait a minute. you've got to be kidding. did you guys see that? that ball was out.

behind lots of clues which scientists say will help them understand the seismic activity. among other things they mapped a 6-mile long crack which runs through vineyards and city streets. it's the result of the still slipping south napa fault. they say the fault ruptured six miles down then northward toward napa and the napa valley. they also confirmed that this morning's 3.0 magnitude trembler near american canyon was another aftershock. they explained the difference between an aftershock and an earthquake. >> the earthquake is so close
5:34 pm
to the aftershock, within an amount of time of that earthquake. it's just a definition. by definition today's earthquake was an aftershock. could it have been its own earthquake in its own right? maybe. but it's pretty low probability of that. >> the geologists say the most significant take away from their research is the greatest threat for life and property are unreenforced masonry buildings. today fast food workers all across the nation went on strike fighting for higher wages. kron4's tran heard from customers who for if most part support the strike. >> reporter: no protest and no walk out at least at this mcdonald in hayward. the workers told me they would like to protest but simply cannot afford to it. that was the case in many places throughout the country including detroit. early on 100 protesters showed up. they blocked the streets in
