the unmistakable sight and sound of the blue angels buzzing the bay area on san francisco's waterfront saturday. thousands of fans gathering to watch as the navy pilots rocked the sky in their fa-18 hornet jets. the popular performance is one of the fleet week's biggest draws. huge crowds brought heavy traffic to san francisco as well. leaving fleet week last night wasn't as easy as arriving for some visitors. marina boulevard, in fact, was packed with cars and pedestrians. some drivers said it took them twice as long to leave the marina area as it took to

a powerful typhoon has poured heavy rain other japan's southern island of okinawa. we thought typhoon v ongfong was over the area. it's packing winds of over 100 miles an hour. and on incredible weather phenomenon caught on video in washington state. it's a waterspout. it's similar to tornados and they are common in the southeast but extremely rare in the pacific northwest. this one triggered the first tornado warning for the seattle area in nearly 50 years. kristen drew has the story. >> reporter: this view of the waterspout was captured 130

pete in the air from a cell tower in dupont. >> the sky turned black. i mean, it was pretty interesting. >> reporter: justin hayes was working the top of the tower when he noticed the distant clouds getting darker. then he heard thunder. >> as soon as i heard the thunder that was like, okay, it's time to get down. we gathered everything we could. >> reporter: at nisqually reach looking towards anderson island. >> the wind was so loud and it was raining a lot. >> reporter: this family also heard thunder. they noticed what looked like a medium sized dust devil 50 feet above the water. >> it was moving really fast. it was just really insane. the water was kind of being really rough. the waves were loud and it was kind of windy and it was raining really hard. >> reporter: they thought a tornado was forming but then the waterspout disappeared. things quickly changed again when they saw this funnel.

>> i thought it was insane because in washington nothing really like that happens. usually just it rains and it's windy. >> reporter: in fact, this waterspout triggered a rare tornado warning. it was the first one issued for the seattle metro area in nearly 45 years. >> that's definitely a tornado. >> reporter: the whirling column of air was heading east towards still stillacum at 25 miles an hour. >> definitely on my bucket list. >> well, authorities say the water spout never reached land and there were no reports of injuries or damage. bringing it back home to the bay area, we are going to talk about the exact opposite. no waterspouts but a lot of wind and dry conditions. >> yeah, that's right. we are in the middle of a red flag warning right now for the north bay and east bay hills. very dry conditions. relative humidity below 25%. there is an enhanced concern

corner. precipitation to the north bay and the coast. sunny and mild conditions on tap for thursday but we are actually looking at the possibility of remnants from what was super typhoon vongfong. >> and weather is a concern for firefighters still working to control a wildfire in northern california. as of today, the applegate fire is 67% contained. it's burning along i-80 just east of sacramento. the fire threatened 1,000 homes. it's burned almost 460 achers to to -- acres to date. you five homes have been lost in that blaze. police arrested a man on suspicion of starting a wildfire. the suspect is 24 ronald marshall. he was taken into custody yesterday on multiple felony counts, including arson. he is currently in jail on $250,000 bail. the weed fire destroyed 150

buildings. most of them houses. world news this important. the u.s. military says airstrikes continue in iraq. those attacks have been going on since august. but officials are saying they aren't stopping the militants from advancing. they have their eye on a town near the turkish border. a kurdish official described the situation as dire. today close to 40 people were killed in a series of car bombs attacks in baghdad. dozens of others wounded. president obama has said that the u.s. ground troops will not be used to fight rebels in that region. a large but peaceful group of protests gathered outside ferguson police department in missouri last night. protesters voicing their anger towards police over two shootings involving white officers would killed two 18-year-old african-american men. this follows the august shooting of michael brown jr. and last week's death of meyers. authorities say brown was unarmed but struggled with the

officer who shot him while meyers was killed by an off- duty police officer who claims that meyers shot at him first. a teenage girl is dead. 22 people were taken to the hospital after a haunted hayride accident in maine. authorities say a jeep hauling a hay wagon carrying guests lost control last night. the wagon went down a hill, crashed into a tree and overturned. fire and police rescue teams rushed to the area following the wreck. police spokesmen say the hayride takes place in the middle of the woods on a treacherous jail. a mechanical problem may have contributed to the accident. and authorities say a passenger train struck people taking photos on the southern california coast. one person was killed. two others injured. a santa barbara county fire spokesman says the victims were standing on a beam shooting photos around sunset yesterday as the amtrak train approached. he says they tried to run off the beam but three of them were

health presbyterian hospital preliminarily tested positive for ebola. that is a female nurse who provided care for thomas eric duncan who died in dallas on wednesday and was the first person in the u.s. diagnosed with ebola. preliminary tests came back positive late last night and this morning. texas health officials say it's unclear exactly how she became infected. >> we're still confident that the precautions that we have in place will protect our healthcare workers. we don't have a full analysis of all of the care we're going through that right now to try to understand specific elements of who came in contact with mr. duncan, around what circumstances, on what day, et cetera. >> reporter: and health officials say the infected employee is in stable condition. the cdc will now work to confirm that preliminary ebola test. this would mark only the second case of ebola if our country

and the first time in the u.s. that ebola was transmitted to another person. marty. >> thank you. that's mike pelten staying on top of our news story from the newsroom. this could be a serious blow in the fight against ebola. healthcare workers in liberia are threatening to strike in a dispute over hazard pay. they are pleading with physicians and nurses assistants to show up to work tomorrow. workers are demanding $700 a month in hazard pay in addition to their salaries that are around two to $300. their monthly hazard pay is less than $500. right now there are over 8,000 cases of ebola worldwide. more than 4,000 people have died of ebola. that's the finding of the u.n.'s world health organization. the latest count brings the total number of confirmed, probable or suspected cases of ebola to 8400. half of those victims have died. on the screen you can see where the areas are where those deaths have been reported in africa,

injured two others on saturday morning in hayward. that fire spread quickly engulfing the house in just a matter of minutes. authorities say the victim, a man in his 80s, was found dead in the living room of the home. they say his daughter and neighbor were burned trying to pull him to safety. >> all the adults that were injured were attempting to get him out of the house as the fire was burning. >> the neighbor was treated for second-degree burns on his hands but there is no word on the daughter's injuries. fire crews were able to put that braise out and -- in a little bit over ten minutes. a man with alzheimer's disease has been reported missing yesterday. he has been found. police say 87-year-old wayne rose was located overnight about 2:30 this morning by the el cerrito police department. before that time he was seen around 4th street and channing in berkeley. we are happy to report he is back home safe with his family members. residents in san pablo say they have seen a sharp rise in crime around davis park. kron 4's dan reuben reports

the familiar sights and sounds of the blue angels budsing the bay area with that -- buzz the bay area with that water show on saturday. thousands gathering to watch as the pilots rocked the sky in their jets. the popular performance is one of fleet week's biggest draws. crowds brought in heavy traffic to san francisco. leaving fleet week last night wasn't as easy as getting there for a lot of people. moreno boulevard was packed with cars and pedestrians. it took some drivers twice throng leave marina as -- twice as long to leave as to arrive. but saturday's events went well all in all. >> we're very fortunate. everyone here acted responsibly. we don't have any major issues. after sunset, visitors were

healthcare worker -- infected healthcare worker is in stable condition this morning. and a labor dispute could be a serious blow in the fight against ebola. healthcare workers in liberia are threatening to go out on strike over hazard pay disputes. officials are pleading with the nurses and physician assistants to show up to work tomorrow. workers are demanding $700 a month in hazard pay in addition to their salaries. right now there are over 8,000 cases of ebola around the world. more than 4,000 people have died of ebola. that's the finding of the un's world health organization. the latest count brings the total number of confirmed, probable, or expected cases of 8,400. on your screen you can see the areas where deaths were reported in africa, spain, and the latest in the u.s. the weather forecast for the bay area. we're expecting or we're in the middle of a red flag warning for the bay area.

relive the 1989 world series and the earthquake that changed the bay area. longtime journalist gary peterson is the author of this book. this week we're looking back 25 years to the earth and the world series. the timing of your book is just perfect. you were in the press box for game 3 of the world series when the shaking started. what did you feel? >> i was in the overflow section, section 1, upper deck, candlestick park. and it started out as a kind of a vibration or buzzing. people thought it was an aircraft going over. in the time it took to form that thought, it was pretty obvious, no, that's not what that was. then we started the pitch and roll and bounce and moving ways that you shouldn't move in a 60,000 seat concrete

stadium. and from my standpoint, i was thinking if it stops now, we're okay. if it stops now, we're okay. and after a while, 15 seconds seemed like an hour. i thought, i don't know that is this going to be okay. >> and your assignment to cover the world series turned into an assignment to cover a natural disaster. >> it sure did. with power out to the stadium, darkness coming, i quickly decided they're not going to play this game. so i needed to get to where i could get to the players and the managers. and team officials. so i exited the stadium slowly. everyone else was trying get out at that point as well. circled around, went throughout player parking lot to do the interferes. then we had to -- the interferes. then we had to find a place that had power and lighting. >> and you talked about going into a hospitality tent. >> yes, they had them there at that time. they had hospitality areas when you covered the postseason. so media like myself, you'd go in, grab a box of lunch before the game, and if you were quick enough, you'd get

down there afterward for a little buffet. we found the tent, the other two guys let them in. and the guard asked where's your ticket? >> in the middle of the earthquake! >> i said you got to be kidding me. he said you can't come in. and the owner of the giants, his wife connie walked by and she said you let these people in. and she brought us cold food and apologized because it wasn't warm. i said i think we can forgiven you. footing, and the other team was about ready to leave town. this was a time that both teams had solid ownership, good management, they had talent, charisma, and big things happened. >> and the a's won in four games. it was a 4-game sweep instrumented by the quake. there was about 10 days off in between game 2 and game 3. and so the a's never really got the recognition that they should have. >> they didn't. no. 1, it was probably the least competitive world series ever. and no. 2, the earthquake naturally got in the way. and then no champagne or beer in the clubhouse, they decided that out of respect per people who lost loved ones or property. and even the civic celebration in jack london square was very muted. they gave players who spent an extra two weeks in the bay area, it

was optional. so some players left town. >> they went home. tell us what you remember most about that time. it was a time of jubilation for bay area fans. both teams in the bay area facing each other. >> it was unique. the teams have shared the bay area now for almost 50 years, and that's the only time they have been in the world series. so that's a once in a lifetime experience. it was a dream season for a baseball fan in the bay area. then a lot of history went crashing together that night. suddenly we have the biggest earthquake since 1906. >> and it still marks us to this day. look at all the changes that have been brought about. we cross the bay bridge every day. that's a very big change right there.
