4:12 am
rain although we are seeing winds pick up and stronger gusts expected offshore. we're just getting started here with with this storm and the chp with some tips to help be out on the roadways a reminder to avoid outside lanes those are the ones that often flood near the roadway edges. never drive through standing water. you never know how deep it is or what's under the surface. chp officer reminding you to slowdown to prevent hydroplaining and keep a safe distance between cars and remember to keep those headlights on whenever your windshield wipers are on especially during daylight hours. new this morning we're getting reports of trees already coming down around the bay area. this is at badega avenue near north webster in petaluma. the tree blocked lanes for a bit but firefighters working hard and they had it cleared in about 20 minutes. >> it's just a sample of what's to come. more trees certainly will fall. take a look this system awfully intense, pounding the north bay at the moment and i'm seeing deep red in some of that rain just offshore. we'll be tracking it and

4:15 am
welcome back to the kron 4 morning news tracking the storm and let's go tote weather center and get an update from james fletcher. >> starting off with storm tracker 4 living us the live view in the north bay which is what started seeing rain since yesterday, in fact at 10:00 p.m. last night they already had an inch on the ground in northwest sonoma county and here we are getting a lot more and it will be like this for most of the morning. petaluma same story for you, look at some of that deep red offshore as that rain is really intense in spots. in fact let's zoom in here and take a closer look. i want to get a reading on what some of these rainfall rates actually are out there. let's click on that. 1.78 inches per hour so nearly two inches per hour in some of those more intense cells and that's kind of what we're seeing offshore, that's to come. let's zoom in and take a look
4:16 am
at the north bay. again for communities like clover dale you've ben seeing rain for quite a little while. still seeing it this morning rain coming down in clover dale at roughly quarter of an inch per hour, you're looking at just about the same clip as well and similar story for santa rosa just above that quarter of an inch per hour rainfall rate. that's what we are seeing in that part of the north bay. zooming in a little closer towards wine country with with sonoma and nap a, rain come down in sewn -oma at about 1700- inch per hour and down near petaluma looks like it's about just under a fifth of an inch per hour and again, that is intense and it looks like things will intensify over the course of the morning. the east bay relatively unscathed though we are seeing rainfalling in martinez where the rain at the moment is falling at about a tenth of an inch per hour so that's what you're seeing in martinez and that rain again will slide into the walnut creek and alamo area before too much longer.
4:17 am
taking a quick look at where we are seeing rain in the eastbay out near richmond. take a look at that. 15 hundredths of an inch per hour in berkeley, so things beginning to intensify and you see all that rain there heading across the bay toward richmond and berkeley so all that headed your way before too much longer. let's slide the maps even further. from oakland down to hayward union city we aren't seeing too much rain. just light rainfalling along alameda. san francisco, it's the northern bit of the city seeing more intense showers right now and as we take a wider look at the peninsula you'll see down near montera, you'll see rainfalling at the moment and off to the left side of your screen of course we with see all of that heavy rain. that is the rain that we're waiting for to slam into san francisco and the peninsula. south bay light showers at the moment in san jose, nothing much just yet and in the santa cruz mountains again just
4:18 am
scattered light showers for now but that will be changing as we head later on into the morning and the early afternoon. take a quick look here at satellite radar perspective and again that say em fairly large and cold air behind it. let's walk you through the timing and again at this point 5:00 a.m. we're still looking for mainly the north bay and san francisco peninsula to be impacted by the storm and then by 7:00 it gets more widespread with heavy showers really focusing on santa rosa, petaluma and then by 8:00 it looks like the cold front will slide down into the peninsula san francisco, san bruno, cutting across toward oakland. by 9:00 an hour later it moves down toward freemont, redwood city, mountain view and cutting out toward livermore, and by about 10:00 this mourn nog the 11:00 hour it will be the south bay, san jose dealing with the heaviest rain but the light showers behind it will still continue and be fairly widespread. through the noon hour, through 3:00 in the afternoon, and then 6:00 tonight for the evening commute expect it to still be wet out there in all directions. 10:00 p.m. finally starts to breakup and
4:19 am
we'll look forward to back off a little bit by even tomorrow morning could be a wet commute as well. just not as intense. here is a live look at the golden gate bridge things getting wetter since our last update. looks like the pavement has seen more in the way of standing water and you can see the spray coming off the tires of the cars so that's what you'll encounter as you head out this morning. as for the long term view we get a break over the weekend but rain returns come monday and tuesday of next week. speaking of the commute and the rain out there are you following any problems erica? >> it's already getting pretty bad out there james. we have several cases where we have down trees out on the roadway blocking lanes and that's very much evidence eastbound 80, so an alert has been issued. a downed tree cashed into a big rig on the freeway. it looks like the big rig has been pushed over to the shoulder but emergency crews trying to cut down this tree and get it out of the way so it looks like they hope to have the lanes reopened by about 5:15 this morning and again this is the non-commute direction but it certainly could be a visual hazard as you
4:20 am
make your way down to the bay bridge toll plaza. in orinda getting on, that on ramp to eastbound highway 24 we have a pretty large tree branch blocking the lanes there so certainly keep that in mind. it's pretty windy out there especially for parts of contra costa county and we do have several wind advisories in effect for bay area bridges. one in effect for the bay bridge right now at the toll plaza not so bad but mid span the wind really picks up and it has been knocking people around. wind advisory in effect for the san mateo bridge. looks like it's pretty good here. traffic doing all right with with a drive time of 12-13 minutes but keep a firm grip on the steering wheel and once it starts coming down at least the rain you've got to make sure your headlights are on as you work your way across the span. golden gate bridge getting wet, however we don't have any special traffic advisories for this span but not only is it raining but windy at the richmond bridge so the chp issued a wind advisory as you make your way into marin

county. mark? speaking of the wind looking at this video coming into kron 4 causing problems . petaluma, firefighters on the scene just after midnight because of these arcing power lines near homes on 7th street in west petaluma. the wind causing the wires to touch and that's what's causing the sparks here. this happened earlier this morning. and in san francisco, people doing everything they can to prevent damage from this storm and the mission district businesses putting sand bags in place and online fashion company here called everlane flood during the storm last wednesday and just repped a few days ago. the company is using wood planks, sand bags and foam to prevent damage this time around from the more powerful storm. the city also contracting dozens of restoration workers to clean up last weeks flood damage and work on preventing more problems in the area with this storm. >> over the years this city has had to pay millions of dollars in damages to a number of businesses so a lot of these properties, so i think prevention is actually money well spent. >> city officials haven't said
4:22 am
exactly how much the work cost this time around. the guatalupe river and other creeks and streams in the south bay could see significant flooding at the height of the storm later today. a crane was brought in here at the river to clear potential trouble spot where several down trees were blocking the river which flows to the bay. city crews were also out clearing leaves and other debris from storm drains. and the national park service is announcing closures due to the storm for the next 48 hours. alkatraz is closed today. that means no tours will be taking people to the tourist hotspot, the national park service saying other sites such as mirror woods could also be closed depending on the weather conditions. visitors are being encouraged to avoid forested areas and to be extremely careful around streams in the park which is could flood. and a reminder we have weather updates all the time on air, online and on our website at kron 4.com and you can get the latest information on the go on our kron 4 mobile app forecast, check the radar, and a lot more information any time, also a great way to

welcome back to the kron 4 morning news we're tracking a very intense storm that's just starting to slam into parts of the bay area. live looks here at oakland where storms are starting to move in. look at the richmond san rafael bridge. not a car, just a few on the golden gate bridge. we're seeing very heavy rain to the north. let's go to the weather center james fletcher has been very busy tracking the storm which is just starting to slam us. james? >> lots to track this morning. take a lock at storm tracker 4.
4:30 am
we've got all of the yellow and red on the map indicating moderate to heavy rain and as you can see, it is at this point anyway hammering the north bay and that's exactly what we thought would happen as the system progresses from north to south with with the winds actually coming up to us from the south. when you actually see it in motion you'll understand why but in any event it's the north bay getting hit first and we'll expect parts of the bay area to start seeing this before too much longer but let's zoom in. so in the north bay we'll start off there and i'll just take a quick sample of what the rainfall rates are like near clover dale so about a third of an inch falling per hour, also quarter of an inch per hour falling in the areas around healsberg, so that's what the intensity is is like to the north. as we zoom closer to santa rosa, san own a looks like we've got rain falling right now better than half inch per hour in santa rosa, in roner park, quarter inch per hour just under a fifth of an inch per hour so we've got extreme rainfalling right now and of course don't forget high winds
4:31 am
associated with this system. i felt it as i was driving across the bay bridge this morning and mark felt it when he came in from the north bay so two hands-on the wheel for sure especially if you drive a high profile vehicle. in eastbay delta so far so good. no rain falling there but in areas like martinez let's zoom in here and take a look. you are seeing rain beginning to fall. you can see martinez, pleasant hill, concord, all seeing light rain falling and we've got lafayette along highway 24 also dealing with the rain at the moment. if you're down near dublin, nothing much yet and as we look out toward livermore, again things all clear for the moment but that will certainly change. take a quick look at what we're seeing here out near san rafael, with that heavy rainfalling and beginning to really impact the golden gate bridge. you see that there? let's get a sample reading here of the rainfall rates. we've got 32 hundredths of an in of per hour falling at the moment and let's pull out a
4:32 am
little bit. i want to show you portions of the eastbay. so we've got some moderate showers beginning to ender laces like alamedar and the oakland side of the bay bridge looks like things start getting more intense as we've got moderate rainfalling. san francisco downtown just light rain but still enough to begin to build our accumulations. the wider peninsula shot shows us rain, light still in nature from san francisco down through south san francisco to about the san mateo bridge and that's where the rain line ends. cuppertino, to your east, and sat aircrews mountains seeing scattered light showers but that will intensify as we head later on into the morning and early afternoon. now the worry is that in the north bay we could see these showers stall just a bit during these early morning hours and that would mean more accumulation and they are already getting upwards of three to possibly eight inches. we could see more of that higher end of the spectrum as
4:33 am
this rain continues to linger in the north bay even by 7:00 a.m. we're predicting heavy showers to still be impacting the north bay and by 8:00 that band of heavy rain begins to move down towards san francisco and oakland. by 9:00 we're talking mid peninsula and out toward the eastbay places like hayward, freemont, livermore, dublin getting hammered at that point and by looks like 10-11:00 today san jose and other portions of the santa clara valley to the south that we'll be seeing heaviest rain and then by about noon time the front moves off but we'll still be dealing with widespread light showers on of this system. again it will be light compared to the heavy rain that we'll see this morning but it will still be raining nonetheless impacting you at 3:00 this afternoon. 6:00 this evening, and even as late as 10:00 p.m. tonight we'll still have light rainfalling. it should breakup a little bit overnight but looks like maybe tomorrow morning we'll once again see a wet commute. here is the live look the golden gate bridge showing us wet conditions and our long range forecast calls for a brief break but again more rain
4:34 am
next week so we've got quite the unsettled weather pattern ahead. keep it tuned here to kron 4 we'll keep you updated and download our mobile app too. a great way to stay updated with weather and traffic speaking cough erica how is traffic? >> we have several incidents james. outhit wind is probably the biggest impact for bay area commuters. we have several wind advisories in effect right now the bay bridge, toll plaza looks good but once you make your way past the lights and head closer to mid span that's where it gets really windy. wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour so keep a safe grip, a firm grip on the steering wheel and allow a safe distance between you and the cars in front of you. so far so good. no accidents to report here. we do have a wind advisory in effect for the san mateo bridge, no issues or advisories at the golden gate bridge but looks like the rain is is starting to come down here. as we take a live look at the richmond bridge not only is it windy with with the wind advisory in effect but also raining as you work your way
4:35 am
closer to the toll plaza, here are a few accidents we are track on our traffic maps, eastbound 80 this is at panol valley road a down tree that slammed on to a big rig in the traffic lanes. it looks like one of the lane now open and keep in mind this is the non-commute direction but it could certainly be a visual hazard for people heading down to the bay bridge toll plaza. we also have a problem in orinda, eastbound highway 24 a down tree branch block something of the lanes there and we're starting to see back ups coming from the caldecott tunnel and we do have wind advisories for several bay area bridges, still looking at pretty good speeds but pretty windy conditions as you work your way across the span. mark? thank you, erica. continuing our coverage with the rain starting in san francisco. kron 4 has an update. will? >> reporter: i can absolutely
4:36 am
confirm that it was already breezy when i left my home in the eastbay and as i got closer to san francisco, definitely this is the most breezy i have felt all morning. i'm along the great highway and as you can see it is shutdown. they didn't even bother coming out a little bit later. they shut it down in the overnight hours so people unsuspecting drivers coming down here, they are seeing signs, turning left or making a u-turn, of course you can always take 19th avenue. how breezy is it, mark? well we'll move the camera straight up. here is the street sign. it is just back and forth. look at the handle that holds the street sign. we're a little bit worried about being underneath it as well and sure enough as soon as i say that a big strong gust comes along. might be a little too hard to tell with our camera but you might be able to see the water moving across your screen. we have not felt a hard rain yet, it's just hitting you but not too bad at this point. the biggest problem if you're heading the roadway especially here just the windy conditions
4:37 am
and let me just piggyback on what erica said a little bit earlier. i cross the san mateo bridge to get to this location and yes, at that time it was breezy. i can't even imagine how breezy it is is right now. back to you mark. >> we'll check back throughout the morning as things are going to get a lot worse and as a precaution schools closing all throughout the bay area. public schools are closed and most of marin county private schools, sonoma schools closed as well and over the golden gate bridge, city college of san francisco canceling classes and they will decide whether or not the closure will continue tomorrow. on the peninsula schools closed from south san francisco to pacifica to red wood city and in the eastbay seeing a lot of closures from berkeley to alameda, and we have a complete list of school closures, we have all that information as well as latest on the storm on our website at kron 4.com and remember, you have any picture "storm, be a part of our

coverage. send them into breaking news@kron 4.com and post them on our facebook page or twitter feed at kron 4 news and also the mobile app which will give you the latest information on the storm a really easy way to send in photos "storm just starting to ramp up around the bay area. as we go to break take a look at storm tracker 4 right now very heavy rain continuing on the redwood highway corridor from santa rosa down through san rafael. this line is moving southwest to northeast but sliding through the bay. a reminder we are under flash flood watches and high wind warnings around most of the bay area. if you are in the south bay you aren't seeing much but remember the storm is coming. expect very heavy rain starting about two to three hours in the south bend, mid peninsula and very heavy rain coming your way shortly.

welcome back to kron 4 morning news. not all area schools are shutting donated because of the weatherment in martinez the schools are opening riding out

the storm. workers at martinez adult education high school did prepare though, dump truck delivered sand to protect classrooms from flooding. the school is located along the edge of the creek, watershed. >> in about the past ten years, we've had an overflow of this bank area right here that came through and flooded this whole area so we want to preemptively have sand bags available and ready and we'll start building a berm in this area. >> this is one of three locations in the martinez unified school district being fortified in advance of the storm. teachers are also doing their part picking items up off the floor placing them on the desks to protect supplies from any potential water damage. james? watching the water here in the kron 4 weather center we have a lot coming down right now. in the north bay storm tracker 4 giving us the live lock. i'll be back with a complete break down of what we're seeing on this map and talking about where the rain will go next.

4:44 am
welcome back to the kron 4 morning news . we're really watching the storm and it's starting to slam into the bay area. james fletcher in the weather center. >> the north bay has been under the gun since late yesterday when the rain first started falling in advance of the cold front. now we with see it make being its way into the north bay. let take a closer look at storm tracker 4 and break down what we're seeing. first of all let's zoom into the north bay and again we've been seeing heavy showers in santa rosa, clover dale, all communities north of santa rosa along 101 seeing heavy rain. clear lake as well, let's take a quick sample of the rainfall rates we're seeing so about a fifth of an inch per hour falling clear lake and clover dale about half inch per hour falling, santa rosa looking at about a third of an inch falling per hour and that's a pretty healthy clip there so the rain fairly intense for you, petaluma same story. let's see that deeper red just to the left of petaluma. taking a look at some of the rainfall rates there. an inch and a quarter per hour. so that's the kind of variation
4:45 am
you can expect with this storm system. let's say you're driving along 101 in santa rosa and you have it coming down at half inch per hour and then you run into this stuff we're it comes down at an inch and a quarter and all of a sudden you can't make out what's in your windshield so be ready for pretty hairy driving conditions as you make your way through the north bay. as we pull out and show you the eastbay looks like more and more beginning to fall under light rain. the delta, brentwood, still fine but for places like martinez and concord as we zoom in you'll see across the straight there, we've got light rainfalling at the moment so that's what we're seeing right now. let's slide the maps a little more want to show you a little bit more of the eastbay shoreline. the wider view doesn't show up from oakland down to union city so we're doing okay there. san francisco not much falling maybe up along the golden gate bridge and just right along the marina but otherwise we're okay for downtown san francisco. the heavier stuff just to the left of your screen is coming
4:46 am
so brace yourself. we're going to get a little wet along the peninsula. in the south bay again just few light showers but nothing much to report just yet. things beginning to intensify a little bit in the santa cruz mountains looks like near bolder creek we've got moderate rainfalling right now. let's get a quick idea on what rainfall is like right there. light to moderate, nothing too impressive just yet. that's what we are seeing on storm tracker 4 as we switch gears and look at the wider view on satellite and radar you see how big that system is is in the pacific. now what we are worried about is this thing may stall just a little bit over the north bay dumping a little more rain than we would like to have in such a short period of time but eventually moves its way across the rest of the bay area, in fact here is how we expect it to develop so 5:00 a.m. still looking at mostly north bay peninsula rain and then as we head toward about 7:00 heavy showers continuing through santa rosa and by 8:00 though we'll expect those showers to drop down to san francisco and oakland heaviest band of them anyway and then that will move
4:47 am
down the peninsula a lock the eastbay to about 9:00 a.m. looking at livermore, dublin, pleasanton, freemont, mountain view areas like that and in the south bay area we get hit during the 10-11:00 hour and that's the this, noon time widespread light showers on the back side of the cold front will continue until 3:00 this afternoon as you pick up the kids from school. hopefully maybe catch a break and won't be raining right where you are as you pick up the kids but everywhere else it looks like light showers on tap. 6:00 p.m. tonight, a wet commute home and then by 10:00 tonight begins to breakup just a little bit. gets take a quick sample look outside. the golden gate bridge still keeping an eye on the camera, looking directly at the cold front as it approaches san francisco. the showers still on the light side as far as we make out from the traffic lights on the deck. long term view, break for the weekend more rain next week. that's the long and short out. winds are awfully strong too by the way and you'll feel that as you drive around. erica? >> we have several wind advisories in effect for bay area bridges james and now because the rain is picking up
4:48 am
we also have flooding now a concern. usual suspect northbound 101 at lucky drive, reports of flooding in all lanes right now so the rain really coming down right there. looks like the southbound side well it's starting to flood just a little bit. it's not as bad as the north bound direction but whenever you're in a situation where you come across standing water you're supposed to slowdown and keep in mind if it's raining, if your wipers are on headlights must be on too so the chp does advice you drive cautiously around the bay area this morning. we also have problems in orinda, the on ramp to eastbound highway 24 we have a downed tree branch blocking the lanes getting on to the freeway. fortunately this is in a non- commute direction so it's not affecting a lot of drivers and an update for eastbound 80, a downed tree on the big rig. well it looks like all lanes currently shutdown right now so the chp is escorting drivers off that road and getting back on the freeway past that point but it looks like they will have the lanes open within the
4:49 am
next 15 minutes so that certainly is is good news and this has been a visual hazard for traffic heading westbound down to the mcarthur maze. we do have wind with advisories in effect. the bay bridge included and that traffic really starting to build but we aren't seeing back ups in the traffic lanes. a message sign is active at the san mateo bridge warning drivers about gusty winds. the rain is come down for your trip into san francisco and keep in mind, we do have some reports of flooding in marin county itself and here at the richmond bridge not only is is it windy but rainy as you work your way into marin. it looks like public transit may be a better option. we aren't hearing any delays for ac transit, bart. mark? >> thank you, erica. we've been tracking the heaviest rain in the north bay so far this morning. let's get an update from kron 4 live in san raphael. >> good morning, the rain is falling and we are starting to see the wind pick up as james
4:50 am
and erica were just talking about. you can see the rain coming down right now. it's kind of a moderate rain. i started the day off in novado where the rain was significantly harder than it is here in san raphael. that's about 15 miles north so as it moves to the south obviously we'll see the rain pick up out here. conditions are rough out there, mark if you're somebody who has to get in a car and drive to work this morning slow it down. the water is pooling all over the place and winds are picking up. mark? >> jackie we'll check back for updates throughout the morning. we have wind advisories in effect throughout most bay area bridge and joining us on the phone is david clemons with the golden gate bridge authority. good morning, how are you? >> good morning. >> what are you watching? more concerned about wind or flooding rains this morning? >> wind is our biggest concern and actually we have just put into place a buffer so we'll be going one buffer lane which means it will be closed completely and two lanes north. the way that we're situated and
4:51 am
the way the wind is coming, we're going to be feeling whether it's pushing you back or against the front as you're driving across it, not crosswinds and that's helpful in a way. >> not as bad i guess as a cross wind would be coming across the bridge at least from a southerly wind direction. >> that's right. and we're reminding about 40 miles an hour at this point seeing 40-mile per hour winds right now what about buses? are you anticipating any delays to bus service this morning? >> buses will be running as scheduled, however if traffic is down to a crawl we'll be stuck behind all of that traffic and we also may not be able to go into some of the downtown areas if there's flooding in there, but we may have to focus on the 101 corridor and pick up people along the bus palong that 101 as we did last week during the rain. >> and what about your ferry service with the waterways a bit choppy and storm warnings out along the bay this morning. are you continuing your ferry service this morning?
4:52 am
>> we are just checked in with the boats a short time ago and all systems are a go right now for the first couple of ferry runs for sure and we're planning to run the rest. we may bring in a heavier vessel which is a little slower if the waters get extremely choppy later in the morning and so that may cause some service delays but we're going to be running the ferries through the morning. >> okay, golden gate bridge through so much for your time this morning and following the schools around the bay area, a lot of closures and we've seen the first schools announcing yesterday we're at oakland, san francisco and in the north bay with almost all private schools closed this morning and public schools closed as well, college of marin, sonoma county unified believe it is open, however some of the schools closer to the coast are closed, we have a complete list of all of the closures scrolling across the bottom of your screen. you'll also find them on our website at kron 4.com and get a link to them on our kron 4 mobile app. the mobile app the best way to get around today if you have to be out and about, you can look
