just how intense the fire was. there was heavy smoke as firefighters were battling the blaze. one firefighter suffered from minor smoke inhalation and two cats rescued including one that needed cpr. now the liquor store has not opened and neighbors are not expect that it will open for quite a while. at least probably a week. but that's just what neighbors are saying. i did call the fire department and i haven't heard back from them about when the building might reopen or let neighbors into get their stuff or the cause of the fire. annie. >> okay. annie. anderson live in san francisco mission's district. thank you. >> a magnitude earthquake hit 160 miles off of the coast of mexico. it was originally measured at 6.6 and since downgraded to a

the time is 9:15. a live look at the golden gate bridge shows crystal clear conditions. we had fog just north of the shot earlier this morning. but what has happened the wind has blown a lot of the fag out of here and the wind is increasing and we have a win advisory in effect for delta. now as for temperatures you can thank the sunshine for these numbers warming up. san francisco right now at 57 degrees and 55 out the door in livermore but the wind picking up 23 miles per hour and sustained winds in fairfield and 7 closer to santa rosa and the wind advisory is in effect until 6:00 this evening. there may be downed trees and power lines and in terms of temperatures we are above average. richmond a high of 64 and upper 60s for the lower peninsula and 67 in san jose. so we do have activities on satellite and radar. it has been pretty quiet and
9:17 am
dry for the past week or so. so we do have moisture and some snow showers for the sierra nevada and by the afternoon, we could see a sprinkle just south of san jose. so that low pressure system bringing a lot of the sunsettalled weather to our east but we could see activity in the bay area. looks like much of the same in to tomorrow. pretty mild weather through the middle of the week and friday a transition day an increase in cloud cover and significant drop in temperatures and it looks like wet weather in the bay area forecast as we head into next weekend. marty. erica. thank you. talking politics. former secretary of state condoleeza rice. she has not officially thrown her name in the ring but joining us is michael yocky. with the poll showing favorable
9:18 am
numbers for rice, do you think there is a chance she might make a run? >> i don't think polls come about just because of the result of an accident. there are people that went into this and wanting to see how it would test out. it tested out well and ways interesting. i was going over the numbers earlier this morning and is how strongly she does across the state even in northern california and the central valley versus southern california. when you look at the early numbers. there are areas where conlin comes behind where condoleeza rice would be. if you take a generic ballot and you put a democrat up and republican up, in california right now, this is how it shapes out. the democrats start with 35 to 40% and the republicans start with 20%. so automatically, in the test and you can see this in the
9:19 am
fact that they threw in probably 30 to 40 names in the thing but about 15 democrats and ten republicans and five others. you will see that it is all about the same. people that have some name recognition and maybe at the high 30s. people that haven't been around for a while like antonio vigarossa making noise about wanting to run. he is stuck in the mid-30s. but condoleeza rice busts all of that. if you are a republican and thinking i want to try and pick up the senate seat and 2016, where am i going to put all of my money? there will be a lot of phone calls going to condoleeza rice between now and the filing deadline and she is someone that can bring a lot of -- get a lot of money. when you think about her network and the former bush supporters and the coke brothers, they will be throwing money hand over fist because she is the only viable
9:20 am
candidate the republicans can conceivably put into play for 2016 because without it, a democrat will win it hands down no matter who. it cob any of the number of people, anything happens to those two if they stumble. democrat starts out with 15 point advantage and rice eliminates that off of the bench. >> the big question is, will she run? you have a spokesperson saying will anything change? doesn't mean things aren't changing and evolving, somebody that was reluctant to become secretary of state. the senate is a good platform for her. she is a thinker and she likes to -- she is a speaker. those are all of the kind of qualities that you want to see in a u.s. senator. not much administrative experience and don't need that. she does have a lot of foreign policy experience and the questions, of course is going
9:21 am
to be once, if she were to get in the race, how soon then would the attacks on the iraq war come into play on her. everyone starts off with a little honey moon and then the -- >> politics come out. >> i'll do research and starts pouring in. interesting. i read today that one of the people who is doing the poll for the uptake in her numbers, when people saw her playing golf at pebble beach at the proam. you just don't know. but if i were republican nationwide in california, i would be doing everything i could to try and get her into the race. >> and what about the minority vote on latinos a big portion of that. and it looks like in that poll they found that latino voters at 60% were more willing to support former l amayor lagossa.
9:22 am
>> he is -- there are a couple of dynamics about we in northern california. most of the population growth is from the south. so the proportion of our votes is becoming not less important but just erroded somewhat but what is going on in southern california. that's when rice pulls better in southern california not a good sign because the sheer number of votes. one of the things we do in elections is that we talk about how much we try to create a buffer of votes. northern california and the bay area is a buffer of votes for democrats. and you try to increase that number to orange county or something like that. traditionally we have done a much better job of doing that to the extent you see right now that every major political post in california is dominated from
9:23 am
northern california. jerry brown is northern californiaian and barbara boxer is northern and diane feinstein. >> the interesting thing is that condoleeza rice has never run for office and run a political campaign. it would be interesting to see how she would have a bruising campaign for senate. >> she would be a tough candidate. >> we will find out. thank you, michael. kron 4 is back after this

>> can't wait to see the dresses, the academy awards will be handed out and another year of debate on winners and loses will range on carnival and the award show madness. >> every year the best in hollywood are honored at the academy awards. here are how the winners are chosen. 6000 academy members. according to gold derby 85% of the members vote using a paper ballot or the secret online id. during the nomination round nine nominees are picked and they are ranked one to five. in most categories a movie or person needs a certain number of first place votes for a nomination. the extra votes get passed to whomever is marked two and this is for a clear front-runner without fearing the votes will be wasted and the best picture category is special.
9:42 am
leaving a top choice and up to ten movies can be nominated and the final round for voting for the winners. for most categories it is simple. each academy votes for one nominee and the nominee with the most votes win but it can take rounds of tallying. again members rank the choices. if one movie earns more than half of the first place vote it wins automatically if not they are eliminated and the second choice gets the points. if no film has 50% of the total that is repeated until there is a clear oscar winner. we have a list of the winners as well as the four things you need to know when you watch the oscar awards that starts at 5:30. if you think you are a big movie buff, we will put your knowledge to the test online and you can take the academy award trivia quiz and we will ask if neal patrick harris will

9:48 am
plane. >> to hawaii. >> and here to discuss this is congressman swadell and thank you for joining us and this seems like an ongoing issue. what is the airport doing to increase security in. >> four breaches in a year is too many. >> yes. >> and team want to know when they go to the airport, only screened and ticketed passengers will get on the plane and right now i am on the house intelligence committee and we know and taking down an airliner is our enemy's top priority and we need the american people to know when they get on the plane no one else is on the plane and the airport has taken a number of measures and they detected that person once they came over the fence. what i have called or for an airport perimeter season and for the idea that you can't guard the acres with just humanizing it. we have too much room for
9:49 am
error. we have testimony to alert officials a moment a breach occurs and that way they can confront the individual before they get on the plane. >> and what about do you think just also the fences may be an issue. >> san jose is thinking about raising the fences and they believe that is how the individual got over and the second that the fence is touched, the airport should be notified and there's technology and i did a demonstration in my district and brought out some of the vendors that can distinguish between a raccoon touching a fence and a human so you don't have this false alarm problem. but right now, human eyes are not working. we could have thousands of cameras but if you don't have thousands of eyes looking at every camera, you will see it and people will lose confidence. >> in this day and age it seems quaint to think that we will raise the fence and that will take care of it. you need high tech resolution to this that is going to handle
9:50 am
it. >> and so i have called for that and i have been working with the homeland security committee and to try and fund a pilot program across the country to look at these different technologies and a private public partnership called the safe skies alliance, they are testing airport security equipment and they will be releasing a report about what they found. and on the topic of airport security, recently headlines are being made about federal officials considering screening all airport workers after a gun smuggling operation was uncovered in atlanta. and what are your thoughts? >> first, i thank the workers, i travel twice a week going to and from washington and they work hard to keep the airports working but we have to understand that some of the biggest threats can come from the inside and so to the degree that i think we can make sure that workers aren't bringing in any contraband or explosives we
9:51 am
should do that and we should understand that the morale is low and some in congress is calling the shut down of homeland security and calling the screeners to have to work and not get paid. so i think we do need to tighten security around the work force but also understand that they are around people who are never on the best behavior when they are traveling and already a tough job to do. >> let's go to the topics and we have been reporting this morning that there is a call by the department of homeland security to focus on domestic terrorism as well. in your work in the house intelligence committee, what are you seeing in terms of domestic terrorism? >> we have done a good job of tracking and monitoring individuals who are a broad and right now the biggest fear is someone on the battlefield fighting with isis will come back and bring the skills an increased hatred for america
9:52 am
here and the greatest threat is a lone actor can go online and purchase household items and can read in entire magazine which is al qaeda's publication and carry through attacks. those are the individuals that i think we should worry about and do everything we can to track them and stop them before they carry out an attack and the f.b.i. a couple weeks ago stopped somebody that was going to attack the u.s. capital where thousands of visitors go every day and that was because of good law enforcement work that stopped that catastrophic affect. >> and the president would like to bring in his powers and come congress and where do you fall in that debate? >> i believe that the president needs congressional authority before we continue against isis. i think he is on shaky ground right now using 2001 and 2003 authorizations that were for afghanistan and iraq. and i believe our hand to
9:53 am
strengthen as we work with our middle east allies that say we are going after isis and how long we will be engaged in this and what the degree is whether ground troops are allowed or special forces. i think we can have our boots on the ground and assist with operations and technical support and this is in the heart of the middle east and we need our allies to defend it. >> you mentioned you were flying back and forth between washington and the bay area. next time you are in town, we would love to talk to you some more about these issues because they are obviously making headlines and thank you for joining us. we'll be right back. >> thank you.
