on 80. sheriff's deputy saved the day. we are live in walnut creek where he got an update from investigators. mike? >> reporter: marty, i spoke with the contra costa sheriff's office and said their deputy was a hero when the bus caught fire late last night. look at the bus. it is burned out on the back side. this is walnut creek about 8:30. the sheriff's department said most of them girls. and three adults on board and they were from arizona and apparently a wheel well caught fire. the sheriff's office said it was on fire and rushed over to help. one of the deputies was enroute to work. happen to see the bus on the shoulder of the road. noticed the bus was on fire. appeared to be on fire. pulled the car over to the side of the road.

saw there was a bunch of kids on the bus. >> he got out of his car and began assisting the kids getting off the bus. they were here and they had nonlife-threatening injuries. this is a lieutenant that tells me after the deputy got the students off the bus. the bus started to be engulfed with flames. chp leading the investigation going forward. they said the deputy certainly a hero after helping all of those kids. >> mart i it -- marty? >> he did it all by himself. he had to be hustling, didn't he? >> well, as i mentioned, he wasn't on duty. he was off duty on his way into work and noticed the bus was catching fire. on his own and tried to help. and give him credit to helping 40 kids last night. officers are never really

off duty. that is mike peltoncht reporting live from walnut creek. we tried to reach out to the deputy to talk about his heroic actions. we hope to have that for you this morning. we have new information about a multi vehicle freeway crash in the east bay. happened in livermore and in the area of the altamont pass. we now know the 16 cars were involved this the wreck and started with a smaller pile up and when they moved over to the shoulder much another crash occurred. one man cast killed and air rivetted out with critical injuries. still no word what caused the initial crash. >> they were closed for four hours. happening right now. police are looking for a man who stabbed two people in a grocery store parking lot. it happened saturday afternoon in santa clara and the alameda avenue. they received a report of a fight. when they got to the scene.

they found the victims. they are expected to recover, however. >> now, we have an update for you on a tragic story we have been following in the east bay. following all week. a mother killed while shielding her mother from a gun battle. >> on saturday, a large crowd remembered shameel pierce. we were there and he spoke to the friends and family. >> reporter: sharing a prayer. locked hand in hand. an emotional crowd at franco gallo plaza remember the lives lost in oakland. putting a focus on the devastating circumstances. and countless victims family face when a loved one days at the happened of gun violence. >> the most recent tragedy being 0-year-old mother shameel pierce. >> she was much more. >> the older sister shontae

would see. mountain view 79 and we will see 80s on the board. east bay, we will have 74 for vallejo and 76 in fairfield and top out in pittsburgh. and santa rosa. and san rafael as well -- and we do have the rain moving in. later again this evening starting at 8:00 and pushing through the overnight hours. you see the band moving in. and around noontime tomorrow, it will start to despite and recede back offshore. kron 4 around the bay temperatures, you will see them. and mostly dry weather. >> marty? >> all right. dan, thank you. 40 people are dead following the terrible bus crash in brings sill. the -- brazil. it plunged down a ravine late last night. it fell 1300 feet. now this new video showing the aftermath of the crash shows

them being pulled from the wreckage. it is still under investigation this morning. however, officials say the driver lost control of the bus while trying to get around a sharp curve. more breaking news from overnight. take a look at this dramatic video out of malaysia. they have an acrobatics team that crashed at the lima airport. it was all caught on camera. you can see them collide and one of them burst into the ground and crashes to the ground. the truly stunning part of this. everybody survived. it shows the pilot ejected just before the plane burst into flames. this is more than three days since two officers were wounded outside of the ferguson, missouri police department. they are still shooting shooting -- searching for the shooter. there is an improvement in community and police recommendations as they come together to talk. we have the story. >> i respect what happened

brothers gunned down at the hands of the police. >> that is one of the biggest issues that got us out here. if i commit a crime don't come might mow -- don't treat me differently than my caucasian counterpart. >> reporter: the conversation is pointed and peaceful. on wednesday night in the very spot, it was a different scene with tensions running high. protestors called for more leaders to resign after ferguson police chief tom jackson stepped down in the wake of the department of justice report showing widespread racial bias in his police force. then two officers were shot. one in the shoulder and one in the face. they are out of the hospital recovering. the search for the cuss species continues and quieted down. they showed support for the embattled police department.

march. don't square everyone with the changes. we will see changes. and it will be in the 70s for the most part. this is a live look at the san mateo bridge and the bay bridge looking good from this angle. this is the building where you see more clouds than this time yesterday. you will also notice the temperatures are warmer and nothing will top what we did yesterday in terms of the high temperatures and the that is five cities. and set the highest temperature for any time in march. any day in march ever. so, sal linas hit 90. and the previous record was 77. that is he pretty impressive compared to where the record was. >> 13-degree it is warmer. san francisco 84 is where we topped out. previous record was 81. record-setting day indeed. today not so much. still nice. >> san francisco at 61. and we will talk more high

temperatures and north bay rain coming up in a bit. marty? thank you. we continue with breaking news. we learn details about a field trip that took a scary turnpike. the bus that was holding kids caught fire. this off duty deputy saved the day. kron 4's mike pelt ton is reporting live. pike, we understand you have an update on the injuries. >> yes, marty. six students. one adult. all of them transferred to the medical center. where within the past hour. >> i confirmed. and they were treated and releesessed overnight. most of them suffered minor injuries and the sheriff's office said credit their deputy for helping to save the kay. >> the bus caught fire. on on i-680. the contra county sheriff's

office were sop some type of a he field trip and the bus pulled over to the shoulder. an off duty sheriff's deputy was on the way to, would. and saw the tire and rushed over to help the kids. >> i immediately began showers and storming the kids to get or the bus. >> then, you can see. >> we were unguled. he got on the bus and made sure that all the kids that were safely off the bus. >> reporter: shortly after that, part of the bus filled with smoke and flames. sheriff's department tell me most of the students were girls. some are dea and use sign language. it is unclear where they were heading. they were transported to the hospital. and treated and released for the injuries. and the bus they were on is run by the viep transportation. >> this morning. able to reach a representation by phone. he said there is no one to

right place at the right time. take a look as the bus caught fire late last night. the sheriff's office tells me around 40 teenage kids and three adults from arizona were on some type of a field trip when they say one of the tires caught fire. the bus pulled over to the shoulder and as it happened, an off duty sheriff's deputy was on his way to work, rushed over to help the kids. authorities say the deputy made sure everyone got off the bus safely as it filled with smoke. the hospital confirmed to me this morning all seven people were treated and released for minor injuries, including smoke inhalation. most of the students on that bus were girls. some were deaf and use sign language. it's unknown where they were headed. the bus belongs to a company called the vine transportation. i spoke with the representative for that company this morning,

but he tells me since there's -- since it's the weekend, there's no one to comment on the accident or the injuries. >> so nice 0qbdto know that everybody is safe and sound this morning. we have been trying to reach out to the deputy who saved day. we would like to see if he would like to talk about his heroic actions. if he does, we'll have it for you on kron 4 news. happening right now, police are looking for a man who stabbed two people in a grocery store parking lot. it happened yesterday afternoon in santa clara at the safeway. police received the report of a fight. when they arrived, they found the victims. both are expected to recover. now, update on a tragic story we've been following all week. an east bay mother killed while shielding her kids from a gun battle. a large crowd remembered her. we spoke to her friends and family. >> sharing a bay area, locked

-- sharing a prayer, locked hand in hand, an emotional crowd remembers the lives lost. putting a focus on the deadly circumstances countless victims' families face when a loved one dies at the hand of gun violence. >> the most recent tragedy being a 30-year-old mother. >> pierce's older sister speaks for the family. >> this pain is something that i never expected to ever experience. >> now that this is her reality, she tells others the violence has to stop. >> take a moment and think about what you're doing before you do it because a lot of times you put innocent lives at risk. the focus switches to celebrating life. president of the oakland city council says she hopes the

people wielding guns on the streets are paying attention to all of this. >> so that they will put the guns down and choose life. >> she went to work. she came home. she fed the kids, made sure that they had baths, made sure they did their homework. she participated in their activities. she participated in their school. she prayed. that day changed our lives forever. we'll never be the same. >> all of this happening while in the backdrop, the police department says it's continuing its investigation into the pierce murder and say that more arrests could be coming. in oakland, felipe girard, kron 4 news. eastbound 580, we now know a total of 16 cars were involved in a wreck. investigators say it all started with a smaller pileup. when those cars started moving over to the shoulder, another

crash occurred. one man was killed. a woman was airlifted out with critical injuries. five other people were hurt as well. still no word on what caused the initial crash, but lanes of the freeway were closed for about four hours last night. still ahead for you on kron 4 news this weekend, authorities investigating a bus crash in brazil. we'll show you the dramatic pictures. and the west nile virus making its way to the bay area. experts explain what you need to know about the virus. children need all the diversions they can get. one hospital is using beads. we'll explain why.

this is a live look at the san mateo bridge. we had 10 records either set or tied. five of the records were the warmest it was in march for five of these cities. those are the ones notated by the asterisk. previous record was 81, but it -- it's not nearly as warm today we'll have showers in the north bay. that will spread into monday morning. more cloud coverage and we could see isolated showers in the higher elevations in the south bay. oddly enough, temperatures 59 in san francisco. 63 in oakland. 64 for concord. 62 in antioch. a little warmer start today than we had yesterday. we're just not going to get quite as high or quite as hot. san francisco, 73. 78 in oakland. 73 is our high temperature in

hayward. 77 is what we'll get up to in fremont. it's going is to scatter throughout the north bay. i would be surprised if it gets further south than the golden gate bridge. another cell is a splinter cell. places around monterey and mt. hamilton but for the most part we'll be staying dry. breaking news this morning. the number of people killed in a bus crash in brazil has risen to 49 now. the bus was carrying about 50 passengers when it plunged down a ravine late last night. this is the aftermath of the crash. you can see victims being pulled from the wreckage.

the official sauce of the crash is under investigation, but it appears the driver lost control while trying to turn on a sharp curve. more breaking news from overnight. take a look at this video from malaysia. a team crashing at thely lima airport. you can see the planes collide. one of them burst into a ball of fire and crashes to the ground. the stunning part of this is everyone survived. the video shows the pilots ejected just before the plane burst into flames. it has been more than three days since two officers were wounded at a protest outside the ferguson police department. investigators still searching for the shooter. in the wake of the search, there's been an improvement as both sides are coming together to talk. here's the story. >> i respect what's happening here. this is what needs to happen, this dialogue. >> it's late friday night and just outside of the ferguson police department, a group of

protesters and two st. louis county police officers come face to face. instead of tension between the groups, there are handshakes and even hugs. >> she always says, come stand out here with us. well, easier said than done. >> now all you have to do is take that off. >> the fact of the matter is i can wear this and still agree with some of the things you're saying. i don't agree with all of them. >> while st. louis county police lieutenant jerry lore is often standing on the opposite side of these protesters, he knows many of them by name. >> one of the things that has worked for me is getting to know people out here. it helps when situations get tense. it's easier to diffuse it if they know who i am and who they are. >> the reason we stepped and took to the streets is because we seen one of our young brothers gunned down by police. >> that's one of the big issues that got us out here.

if i committed a crime, don't treat me different that created a crime that's my caucasian counterpart. >> on wednesday night in this very spot, it was a different scene with tensions running high. protesters called for more city and law enforcement leaders to resign after ferguson police chief tom jackson stepped down in the wake of a department of justice report showing widespread racial bias. and then two officers were shot. one in the shoulder, and the other in the face. both are out of the hospital recovering. >> as the manhunt continues, protests have quieted down. and friday a group stood in the rain to show support for the embattled police department. >> he's addressing the department of justice report. we need time to do that. he needs time to do that. and people are expecting it to

happen overnight. it doesn't happen that way. >> it's a sentiment ferguson mayor james noll finds encouraging. >> i think it's important. there are still people in the community who feel they support law enforcement and leadership. >> while this group may not always see eye to eye with city leaders, they will shake hands with these officers and head back to its side of the street to continue calling for change. >> the washington post reports that jeb bush used his private e-mail account when he served as florida governor to discuss security and military issues. according to the newspaper, the e-mail exchanges included details of florida national guard troop deployments after the september 11th attacks. the post also reports that bush discussed the protection of nuclear attacks on his personal account. aides to bush say none of the e- mails contained classified information and many of the events were documented in news

reports at the time. the white house is sending a warning to republican senator bob coker to stay out of nuclear negotiations with iran. in a letter the white house chief of staff tells senator coker his bill which would allow congress to vote on an iran nuke deal would derail negotiations. the senator wrote that president obama last week saying there's significant growing bipartisan support for congress to have a voice in any iran agreement. the white house has threatened to veto such a measure. much more ahead on kron news weekend. we'll get into sports highlights. first, let's take a live look outside. san mateo bridge this time around.

turning to bay area sport this is morning, the warriors beat the knicks last night. it was their eighth straight

home vic victory. steph curry had great passes. he played on his 27th birthday 27th birthday. thompson haded 26 points. the the brothers combined for 20 points. it was a 40-point 2nd quarter for the warriors that blew the game open. they will take on the l.a. lakers at the oracle arena. in hockey, things are not looking good for the san jose sharks. the hawks broke a long drought. for san jose, it was carlson and joe thornton scoring the only two points for the sharks. that was not nearly enough. the sharks find themselves four points out of the wild card spot. san jose hits the road for a 7- game two-week trip beginning tuesday night in winnipeg. >> happening today, we will find out who gets tickets to the big dance. the ncaa basketball

championship, national chap. the tournament brackets will be released this afternoon but no bay area teams are expected to make the tournament. >> some sad news in baseball for the giants and the organization. former giants general manager al rosens has died. he was tired by the rosen back in 1985 and helped build the team that reached the world series in 1989. rosen was responsible for drafting matt williams and bringing up will clark from the minors. as a player, al rosen was named the 1953 mvp for the cleveland indians. he also played against the giants in the 1954 world series. al rosen was 91 years old. coming up sunday night on sports night live, march madness is finally here and kron 4 has a bracket for you. plus, a lot of new faces on the raider. who won and who lost with our football expert. it's a full half hour of all of your sports needs right after

the high temperatures, though, just not going to get up to the same degree that they were yesterday. we had record breaking temperatures all over. in fact, here is the temperature trend just for redwood city. we hit 81 on yesterday. monday, 71. in fact, falling out of the 70s, 69 is our anticipated high for tuesday. that's a trend we're going to see throughout the bay area. i will exband on that -- expand on that a little more coming up. >> thank you, dan. new this morning two people are displaced following a fire that caused the roof of their home to collapse. happened just before 9:00 last night on the corner of rose creek drive in san jose. investigators believe the fire started because of a problem in the wiring of the home's attic. also new this morning. authorities looking for a rookie lapd officer. police say 27-year-old henry salis has not been seen since friday after an ontario man was

shot and killed after a fight. he was still in his probationary period and was off duty at the time. he didn't show up for work yesterday, and they have reason to believe he knows detectives are looking for him. family members of a man fatally shot by napa police remember him with a memorial walk on saturday night. the vigil started at the home of jaime jimenez and ended a few houses down from where he was shot. they also want the public to know who he was in addition to justice. >> we want to show he's not a bad man. he was very good. so kindhearted. he would give his shirt to anybody. you know, he's a very loyal friend and family member. and he's extremely missed right now. >> police say an officer shot jimenez after he sped past him on a motorcycle. she were able to serve a search warrant at his home for drugs and firearms. video from our partnership with abc 7 shows the scene on

friday. police say the suspect reached for a handgun when they tried to stop him. an officer shot jimenez who was taken to a hospital where he later died. officers say they recovered a handgun, methamphetamine, and a substantial amount of money from jimenez. >> the real holiday still a couple of days away, but for thousands of people in san francisco, st. patrick's day came early. saturday was the annual parade and festival and kron 4est emily turner was there for all the festivities. >> it wouldn't be a st. patrick's day parade without beads, beer, and lots and lots of green. >> the 164th parade and festival celebrates irish history and culture. it's also the largest event. it's so special to abeal sanchez that she stuck around for 30 years. >> honor our country, honor our heritage, honor everything. so i love it. >> he says this is the most festive parade yet. everyone and everything showed

police in kenosha -- police say when confronted, the suspect armed himself with a weapon, and opened fire. officials don't say the type of weapon the suspect had. this comes the the same day as a man killed by officers in madison, wisconsin less than two weeks ago was laid to rest. ten americans are returning to the u.s. to be monitored for the ebola virus. the group was in sierra leone doing volunteer work. they have not been diagnosed with the disease. they will be monitored to see if they show any symptoms. they will be treated at three possible hospitals. one in nebraska and one in maryland and a facility in atlanta. relief supplies are headed to -- after a deadly cyclone devastated the pacific island nation. you're looking at video showing the damage. australia sent two military aircraft with emergency supplies along with medical and rescue teams to help the people

who have lost their homes. the sup lies include hygiene kits, blankets, water. australia has also promised an aid package. winds were 150 miles per hour. six people are confirmed dead. officials say that the death toll is expected to go up. at least 14 people are dead and dozens of others wounded after suicide bombers attacked a christian community in eastern pakistan. the pakistani taliban claiming responsibility for the deadly attack and warned of many more to come. witnesses say the man blew himself up outside a church as a security guard stopped him from entering. the other blast took place inside during sunday mass. a child and police officer are said to be among the dead. the kurdish god in iraq is claiming -- government in iraq is claiming isis used chemical weapons. it's claimed they used chlorine

in the mid-of california's -- midst of california's drought, some local agencies are reluctant to crack down on water wasters. state officials want that to

change. they will meet to discuss more restrictions. all of this is in light of a prediction of nasa scientist who says there's only one year of water left in california's reservoirs. it's only march and the west nile virus has made its way to the bay area. the latest case coming out of fremont where a resident found a dead bird that tested positive for the virus. the first bird was found in may. specialists are saying it's surprising a crow was found this early in the year. alica -- alicia reed was told -- if it has a low infection, it can survive and carry the virus for a while before it dies. >> compared to recent years, the fewest number of mosquitoes

was found in 2014. it was the less active year for alameda county. >> we had a total of 97 birds we found. 16 mosquito pool and one human. now the virus is showing up months earlier. you would think because of the current drought there would be less chances for the disease to spread, but that's not the case. in a drought year there,'s fewer water sources. so the mosquitoes and birds tend to congregate around the water sources. >> the dead bird found in alameda had an acute infection. environmentalists say that's what killed it. >> there was a lot of virus within that bird. >> these are trapped mosquitoes from newark. females need protein from blood to produce eggs. then they look like this. >> so each can contain two to 300 eggs. those eggs can produce a couple hundred mosquitoes. >> that's kron 4's alicia reed

reporting. it's time to be vigilant. if there are any neglected swimming pools or if you find a dead bird, you should double bag it and call abatement, and they will take care of it. san francisco police investigating four officers in connection with the racial slur text messages. they came to light during a friday court hearing during the corruption trial of former san francisco police officer ian fermenger. it was' blacks, mexicans, and guys. it also featured people using the phrase white power repeatedly. san francisco police say they have reassigned the officers during the investigation. thousands turned out in west philadelphia saturday to say good-bye to a fallen hero. police departments from across the country paid their respects to officer robert wilson the third. he was shot and killed in the line of duty a week and a half ago during an attempted robbery at a game stop store. he was buying a gift for his

son when two armed robbers walked in the door. they fought the officer and wilson drew fire away from other patrons. wilson's friends and fellow officers remember his warm smile and caring nature. >> i've been in policing for 46 years, and i have never witnessed an act of bravery like i saw that day. >> i will always be there for you, just as i know he would do for my family. >> officer wilson was promoted to sergeant. a federal study finds a ct heart scans may not be better than old fashion exams. ct scans have been deuced for about a decade and there are the type of x-ray that gives a look at heart arteries. the study found the scans and treadmill tests are equally effective, but it raises concern about how much radiation patients are getting. andy samburg has been

some of the big stories we're following for you this sunday morning, an off duty sheriff deputy being called a hero this morning as a bus car rig children catches -- carrying children catches fire. seven people had to be taken to the hospital. the off-duty deputy spotted the bus fire and rushed to the scene. he then began quickly getting kids off the bus. officials say the bus' wheel well caught on fire. officers still investigating the accident. an east bay mother killed while shielding her children from a gun battle was remembered saturday outside of oakland city hall. a large crowd gathering to pay respects to her. the emotional crowd also remembered all the lives lost in oakland. pierce was the 19th lost this year. the family says the violence
