followed her home and attacked her. >>james:and police in san jose say, they have his picture. >>james:kron-4's scott rates has the latest. >>reporter: herfurth finds himself looking over his shoulder after what police say happened in hos neighborhood tuesday afternoon >>reporter:according to police a 13-year-old girl was attacked these are surveillance photos taken of the suspect shortly after attempted assault >>reporter:investigators say the incident happened here around the 4000 block of rio vista ave. the young victim as she was walking home from school. investigators say as the girl was stepping into her house the man approached her and forced his way in the her home. she was able to fight him off and call for help but the suspect got away. >>: this is the first violent incident that happened here. >>reporter:and investigators believe this man is responsible

>>:i think it's sad. >>reporter:jessica hackett drove over from south san francisco. she says she's never been this close to a whale and regrets that it had to be like this. >>:it is to bad. they are beautifull animals. >>reporter:earlier in the day, teams of biologist from the marine mammal center, the california academy of science and uc davis performed a necropsy on the whale to try to figure out how it died. by the end of the day they had determined that it was a female humpback that had suffered traumatic injuires. the whale had four broken vertebrae a broken rib and was hemoraging. those are the kind of injuries biologist would expect to see if the animal had been struck by a passing ship, but they say that in this case they don't know for sure that that's what happened. >>reporter:they also took tissues samples from the whale and examined the contents of its stomach. those samples will be analyzed in a lab to see if the animal died in some other way. unfortunately, the exact cause of death may never be known. >>reporter:regardless researches say that it's rare for a humpback to wash ashore and this gave them a unique opportunity to examine one up close
