shook the concord area in the east bay. at least one was centered here under oak meade drive. even though the quakes were not strong enough to create any major damage, they have rattled some nerves. here to talk more about the recent swarm and what all of it minors is jack boatwright from the usgs. jack, we appreciate you coming in. a lot of people think when we have these small earthquakes under a certain fault, in this case the concord fault that it relieves the tension or pressure on those faults. >> well, that doesn't really happen. to relieve the tension for, say, a magnitude 6 earthquake, you would need thousands of these magnitude 3.5, 3.6 events. it would drive the residents crazy. >> it would certainly be a long period of small quakes, and, you're right, people would really get tired of it. so this does not relieve necessarily the pressure on the concord green valley fault, but
9:20 am
does it tell us anything about the quote-unquote big one? >> we don't think so. we think this is what we might consider garden variety, sort of a small event. they're interesting from a seismo logical point of view, because they're right at the base, at the bottom of what we call the seismogenic zone. it's sort of the bottom edge. so that we think material is slipping below it, and it's locked above it, so we see the seismic flip work a little bit shallower for events like these. >> uh-huh. so while it's not giving us on relief in terms of relieving pressure, does it tell you that a bigger quake is on the way? is it a warning? >> not specifically this event.
9:21 am
we also -- one thing that was interesting about the swarm was it was mostly a on a fault that is normal to the concord green valley fault. we see that kind of fault aing in the east by a a lot, but it doesn't argue very strongly that we would see a larger event. we are worried about the concord green valley fault system. it appears to have about 6 millimeters of slip build up on it every year. the -- it's the last big event occurred before 1770. so -- >> it's due? >> we think it's due, but when we say due, in the geological

sense, it's not like it's supposed to arrive like a package the next morning. >> yeah, it's not imminent, but somewhere in that range. the last earthquake was, as you mentioned, in the 1700s on that fault. does that cause seismologists to look a little more closely at the concord fault, or other faults, which have not had an event in a couple of hundred years? >> we're looking at all the faults there. trying to figure out what the effect of the south napa earthquake was on the concord green valley. it's -- the problem that we have in the east bay is there are a lot offal faults. the hayward fault, the concord green valley. the south napa, or the west napa fault. and we're not sure how -- it's
