>>i am horrified as to what good reason there would be to have a swastika on the field. >> reporter:that's the voice of the bystander who stumbled onto the offensive symbol monday evening and sent this video into kron4. >> reporter:today.officials from the high school and the south san francisco school district went out to see for themselves what had happened.you can see a maintenance worker describing it's size.which was roughly ten yards wide. >> reporter:.the officials wouldn't go on camera.but say the vandals must have struck over the weekend. they say it was taken down as soon as they were notified. >> the swastika was created with these plastic tiles that snap together in order to create a flooring on the field in order to protect it >>there was a number of them out here for friday's graduation ceremony. the good news is after it was disasmbled there was no permanent damage. >> reporter:but that's not going to keep investigators from south san francisco police from looking into who was behind the incident. >> reporter:the assisant vice principal of the school says the tiles take a lot of work to put to gether and snap apart.so who ever did this put time and energy into it. >> reporter:the officals were saddened by the incident.and say there is no tolerance for this kind of behavior in their communtiy.a parent at the school found the incident scary.

investigators. catherine heenan is here with details -- including the fact the man had ties to the bay area. >> catherine: boston police are showing the large military-style knife they say the man had been waving when he lunged at officials this morning. >> catherine: and say that 26-year-old - usaama rahim - had been under 24-hour surveillance for as long as two years. the shooting happened in the parking lot of a c-v-s drug store this morning. >> catherine: police say an fbi agent and a police officer identified themselves and confronted the man -- but had no intention of any violence until rahim pulled out the knife. >> catherine: rahim's brother is an imam at the lighthouse mosque in oakland.where some members are calling the shooting "murder." >> catherine: authorities say they had no choice but to shoot. >> unfortunately we had to

accomplishment. >> pam: tonight. kron 4's jeff pierce introduces us to a top grad in the north bay. who has embraced good grades with good deeds. >> reporter:at american canyon high school navjot hansra is going through the rituals of graduation. but for her the work is still ongoing. >>definitely trying to keep straight a's because valdictorians are required to do that. >> reporter:at american canyon high fifteen students met that qualification so it took some acomplishment to stand out. >>i think what sets navi apart from that group is she's just gone over and above particularly with community service. >>we only have to have forty hours of community service at our high school to graduate and she has two thousand. >>we have a red cross club that i founded in my sophomore year. >>she did a pillow case project in a local elementary school across the street after the earthquake. she helped students assemble a little emergency kit in a little pillow case. >> reporter:navjot's introduction to education came early when she lived with her grandparents in india when she was just

>>authorities are investigating the cause of a deadly plane crash in the east bay. a private plane crashed shortly after taking off from the livermore municipal airport. around 9 last night. >> pam: the pilot was killed in the crash. kron 4's will tran was at the scene. and has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter:in china. rescuers are racing to get to try and get hundreds of people. feared trapped inside a capsized passenger ship in the yangtze river. >> pam: the eastern star capsized late monday in stormy weather. and a tornado. with nearly four- hundred and sixty- people on board.

>> pam: just 15 people have been found alive so far. >> pam: china's state news agency reports , more than a were participating in the rescue effort. the ship's captain and chief engineer were taken into custody for questioning. >> catherine: a congressional panel is investigating last month's deadly amtrak crash in philadelphia.as a preliminary report is released. >> catherine: so far - the train's brakes, signals and track geometry have been found to be working. >> catherine: the may 12th crash left 8 people dead and more than 200 hurt. the n-t-s-b chairman made it clear today that they're still trying to figure out whether the engineer was on his cellphone before the speeding train derailed.
