this morning, crews still are on the scene of a wildfire in the anthony -- antioch hills. and bible study resumes after last week's deadly shooting in south carolina. >> >> good morning. it's going to be a hot day

across the area. possible enterprisele digits again for our inland locations. michelle, we're a talking triple digit heat. so what areas are going to get the hottest today? >> inland locations, so the farther east or south you go, it's going to be hot. at 3:00 this afternoon, here is what it looks like for locations across the east bay. temperatures of 100 or possible are higher for inland by this afternoon. antioch will warm up to 95. a handful of mid-90s from concord. winds will be blocking from the west or the north west, up to 10 miles per hour, and it will be very dry. so if you know anyone who is susceptible to heat illness, please check on them, and check the back seat if you are going to be making your way out the

door. half moon pay, you're waking up to 48 degrees. so cool there, but that temperature will warm up this afternoon. we have some low-to-mid 60s. antioch 66, pleasanton 62. upper are 50s to low 60s across the south bay. san francisco, 56, the same for oakland. dalye53 to start off your morning. looking at san jose and parts of the south pay, it will continue to heat up to near 90 degrees. may fall a degree or two over the next couple of hours, and then we'll quickly warm up when that sun comes out. into the lunch hour, mid-80s, çz2ñdefinitely a change from where we were just yesterday at lunchtime when temperatures were there in the mid-to-upper 70s. and then in the afternoon, be lower 90s for san jose, and temperatures will continue to stay into the upper 80s to --

ride town this morning. annie some >> thanks, rebecca. crews still on the scene of a grass fire in antioch that burned more than 500 acres. that fire is now closer to being contained this morning. firefighters from three different agencies worked to contain the fire, which was threatening homes. it was contained by around 10:00 p.m. last night. fortunately no injuries were reported, and no buildings were damaged. >> any structures damaged? >> no. >> lucky, huh? >> very lucky. that's quick thinking of the first engine company calling in with the response and getting resources here as fast as possible be. it tells you how fast wind can carry the fire. we went from four acres to a hundred, two hundred, to three hundred plus. >> very quickly.

>> yes. >> crews are still on the scene miss morning, monitoring any potential hot spots. many yesterday were forced to evacuate their homes. in all about 100 homes are had to be be evacuated. this morning, all of the people have been allowed back into their houses, but there were some tense momenting snore residents who are thankful that firefighters were able to contain the fire quickly. >> oh, i was just frantic, you know, i was concerned about our whole be neighborhood. >> for every one of them that have helped, i want to thank all of them for doing doing a great job putting this fire out. >> you think they saved your home today? >> yes, they saved all of our homes. >> yeah, all of the weren't they have, and the modern technology, i think they did a helluva job. >> the cause of that fire still under investigation this morning. and coming up at 5:00, will tran will be at antioch with the latest on cleanup efforts

this morning. and beginning next week, cal fire is suspended for permits for several areas for burning, areas which are not serve bade city or correspondent fire department. coming up at 4:15, we will look at how firefighters in the south bay are preparing for any fires are that may start during the hot weather. and the other wildfire we are tracking is the fire burning south of lake tahoe. this blaze is more than 17,000 acres, and only 10% contained. since this fire was sparked by lightning on friday, and is moving closer to the small town of murphyville. residents in this area are on standby today. right now hundreds of firefighters are working to contain this blaze. happening today, we are waiting to hear a decision from the supreme court on the future

of same-sex marriage. that decision could come down sometime this morning. the courts will design decide if same sex couples have the constitutional right to marry, or if bans sunday same-sex marriage can replain -- bans on same-sex marriage can remain in place. we'll have the story here on kron 4. also happening today, the first funerals will be held for the victims of last week's deadly shooting at a south carolina church. services for state senator

reverend clementa pinkney will be held at the church where that shooting occurred. nine people were killed when a gunman opened fire at a bible study class last wednesday. and last night the first bible study was held at the church since last wednesday's shooting. the shooting was held in the same room where dylann roof opened fire last wednesday. this is video of that massive crowd that showed up at the church last night. and last week's shooting has sparked a controversy over the use of the confederate flag. around the nation, hundreds of people have demonstrated to have that flag removed from outside state buildings, and from retailers. but now a confederate flag hanging from a home in a local neighborhood is stirring up controversy. >> i drove by this morning, and

discovered this, the confederate flag, flying in my neighborhood. >> reporter: janice cater thompson said the confederate battle flag has no place in modern america society and said she was offended that the flag's owner would display such a symbol of division if this country's history, especially in light of last wednesday's shootings, in which the suspect was scene in several images holding the flag. >> and i just think that it's really unfortunate that it's flying in our community. reporter: the owner did not want to go on camera, but defended his right to fly the flag. >> i'm not a racist person. that's that. and we have to accept our history, and we can't just white wash things. that gets into an area are that

in the barry, the hot, -- bay area, the hot continues have fire crews preparing. >> reporter: triple digit heat, gusty winds, and dry grass, it adds up to fire weather. fire weather means the action here inside cal fire's emergency command center in morgan hill is also heating up. >> when we get to this kind of hot weather and low humidity,

are blade on a rock sets off a spark, and you've goth a wildfires. >> reporter: so cal fire is on hot alert with fire season now in full swing from here on out. let's take a look at your forecast for today. hot temperatures. could we see set any new records today? >> possibly. especially across inland locations. here is hot spot in concord this afternoon. talking about some mid-90s, but could feel like the upper 90s at times. so if you're heading out the door this afternoon in concord, it's going to be hot. in the inland areas, they'll heat up to mid-80s during the lunch hour, and then will heat up another 10 or 15 degrees.

we're talking about lower 80s still by 8:00 p.m. we have clear skies out there, not seeing any fog this morning, and temperatures are actually on the slide slightly milder side, especially across inland locations. so i'm talking about some lower 60s right now, as far as areas in the inland area. antioch, 66 as of right now. looking a at the south bay, some mid-to-upper 50s to right around 60 degrees. looking that's north pay, we is have some mid-50s to start off your morning. still cool along the coast, where half moon by a is at 48 degrees. if you are going to be on the east bay shore line, you'll have some cooler are temperatures compared to inland locations. so we're talking about some mid- 60s across richmond and berkeley. and then as we continue farther south on the east by shoreline, we have some upper 80 those near 90. so it's going to be warm there. if you are heading into san francisco today, 76 will be the

temperature, so it's going to to be about five degrees from where to temperatures were yesterday, so warm there, and it's going to continue to heat up for areas across the eastern side of the peninsula. now, if you want to head to the beach, it will be a little warmer. we'll have upper 60s to low 70s, and look at half moon pay, warming up to near 70 by this afternoon. looking at the rest of the bay area, you can see that warmer temperatures are going to be be inland, so look at fairfield, 97 by the afternoon. santiago warming up into the -- vallejo warming up. and then by saturday, we're going to turn a little bit cooler, and more comfortable, for the first half of the

101 from touch to santa rosa, it's going to take you 26 minutes so far this morning. when i come back, i'll have a full bridge check for you, and also check your south bay commute. well, more cracks have been discovered in seismic anchor rods used in the new eastern span of the bay bridge. they connect the main tower to its base. four of these rods were removed for testing, some because they failed stress testing. it's not clear in the flaws are

the result of cross-examination from saltwater. the chief engineer said the cracks can't be seen by the naked eye and says more testing is needed to determine if this is a significant problem for the bridge. >> it's important to understand that no one should jump to a conclusion that when people think of or use the word crack, they think of some massive thing that you can slide your finger in. that's not what we're talking about here. i would say what we're talking about are imperfections. >> cal tran said most of the remaining rods recently passed a stress test, and confident that the bridge is safe for drivers are. a military jet crashed last night in southern arizona near douglas. the pilot with the arizona air national guard was the only person on board that jet during the night training mission. the pilots identity and

commission are earn known at this time. the cause of the crash is under investigation. wednesday was an emotional day for the families of victims and survivors of the boston marathon bombing. the bostonnen bomber spoke to the court, offering an apology for the first time. afterward, a judge formally sentenced him to death. mary maloney has details. >> reporter: the boston marathon bomber ended his silence speaking in court about his actions, saying: then without turning to face his victims, he added i'm sorry for the lives i've taken. his words are did not is it well with some survivors. >> i regret having ever wanted to hear him speak, because what he said showed no remorse, regret, or. pathy for what he's done to our

-- empathy for what he's done to our lives. >> reporter: another said the apology resonated with him. >> i have come to a place of peace, and genuinely hope he does, as well, and for me to hear him say that he's sorry, that is enough for me. reporter: but it wasn't enough for prosecutors. >> i was struck more by what he did not say. it's one thing to apologize or to say that you feel bad about the suffering you caused, but he did this for political reasons, be this was a politically motivated act, and at no point in his statement did he renounce the reasons for which he committed this act. >> reporter: moments later the judge formally sentenced the 21- year-old to death, i just as the jury recommended in may. he is the first person to be handed a death sentence in a federal terrorism case since the september 11th attacks. coming up on the kron 4 morning news, the giants and the a's both in action last

thousands have demonstrated to have the confederate flag removed, but now a confederate flag is hanging from a home in petaluma. neighbors who live in the area say that petaluma has a history of racism. the owner of the flag is defending his choice to fly the flag is saying it's not a symbol of racism, but a symbol of history. >> we're also looking at another big story for you. it is the hot weather, taking a look outside at the embarcadero this morning. temperatures could reach triple digits once again in parts of the bay area on this thursday, prefriday. good morning, michelle, so we're talking triple digit heat. looks like san francisco, still warm for the city, at least. >> yeah, it's going to be warm across the city. as you make your way into downtown san francisco, it's going to feel a little bit warmer. winds are not going to be as breezy as compared to yesterday. we'll have sunshine a little earlier today, because we're not waking up to any clouds or fog. so as you make your way out the

door, just keep that in mind that not only across san francisco, but everywhere, temperatures will be 5 to 15 degrees above where they should be. 57 in san francisco. could fall a couple of more degrees before the sun comes out. so if you have any outdoor lunch plans across the city, it's going to comfortable and nice with sunshine, and winds will pick up, but not as breezy as yesterday from the west, and daytime highs heating up into the mid-70s, and we'll continue with 70s for much of the afternoon. you can't see any fog, clear skies right now that we are waking up to, and temperatures reflect that we have clear skies across the peninsula, so waking up to some 50s out there. much cooler across the coast have temperatures are in the upper 40s. we have a nice sea breeze. lower 60s across inland locations this morning. so pleasanton, confederate, antioch into the mid-60s --

coast, though, upper 40s to start off your thursday morning. high tide, high temperatures for today across the south bay. they're going to quickly heat up. so if you are in morgan hill this afternoon, 94. ever green is going to heat up to 90 degrees. santa clara, 92. mid-80s across mountain view and sunny vale by this afternoon. for areas across napa, looking at some mid-70s across san francisco this afternoon. if you are going to be in that area, plan on temperatures being five degrees warmer than yesterday. looking at the beaches, upper 60s by this afternoon. estimates will continue to back off just a little bit more into friday, so not as hot, and then we start to cool down for a comfortable weekend. so mid-80s inland, lower to mid- 70s in the bay, and looking at the coast, we have some upper 60s, so much cooler and closer to average for this time of year. by early next week, temperatures are slowly going

with kron 4's james fletcher who is live in walnut creek with tips on how to beat the heat and stay safe in triple digit temperatures. good morning, james. are you ready for the heat? >> reporter: i certainly am, and everybody inland ought to be be ready for it today, as well, as we're looking, as michelle said, for really hot weather today. i'm out here live at the heather farms swim park in walnut creek where they're expecting a lot of folks to come out here today to try to cool off, and that's a good idea. what you really need to know, what the sign offers heat exhaustion is, a lot of times you just feel a little hot out there, but if you know what the signs are, you can jump on it quick and keep yourself from slipping into heatstroke, which would be the most severe extreme of that. so look for any cramping. if you feel like you have some cramping in your legs or abdomen, get to a cooler place. and of course drink plenty of fluids, that's going to be key for you today.

and heading over to 280 now, as you make your way into coopertino, when i come back, i'll look at the area bridges and also will check your east bay drive times. firefighters in the east bay keeping an eye out for any hot spots after a huge grass fire broke out yesterday afternoon. this fire starting at 4:00 in the afternoon. they finally had it contained by 10 last night, as it burned very close to homes. in total, 533 acres burned before the blaze was under control. and firefighters were at the scene overnight. >> reporter: they are still here. there's still a strong smell of fire, smoke in the air, the he hill is right behind me. there's a bit of a haze on the hillside, there are also homes behind me. the good news is the people who were evacuated because the fire got so close to their homes,

they have been able to return in the overnight hours. let's show you the video, courtesy of our parenter ship with abc 7. the fire just took off so fast that they had to call for help, not only did the county fire protection come out, they also called for cal fire, youred helicopter drops. in all about -- used helicopter drops inspect all about 180 firefighters were called to the scene. conditions very dry, but they were able to do the heavy lifting, once it got dark, and that's why this morning is 100% contained, but 100% contained does not mean that it is out. i can still see some hot spot, somebody flare-ups, and that's why the firefighters will be here throughout the morning, throughout the day, to make sure that this fire is completely out. now, we talked about the people who were forced to evacuate. here is what they had to say, the gratitude that they expressed to the firefighters. >> there was a lot of

this morning. coming up, i'll check your morning commute heading through the east bay. mark? >> thank you, rebecca. we're following this grass fire, a huge grass fire burning in the regional park area yesterday. it did threat some homes. here is the scene. the fire is now 100% contained. it took firefighters from three different agencies to battle the blaze. no homes were damaged or lost. the blaze broke out around 4:00. they fully contained it by around 10:00 last night. no injure areys or buildings damaged. however, just because it's contained doesn't mean it out. firefighters still on the scene overnight. will tran is there with an update following the latest as daylight approaches. we get a better view of the

scene there. will? >> reporter: mark, be still some hot spots they have to worry about. i've seen a couple of fire vehicles on the hill side. they will be here throughout the morning, or are throughout the day, just to make sure that this fire doesn't come back to haunt them. you talked about it 100% contained, and that is great news, because they did all of the heavy lifting once the sun came down, when it became little cooler and less windy. let's show you chopper video, courtesy of our partnership with abc 7. the cause of the fire still under investigation, but it moved so quickly, because the hill side is so dry, they immediately had to call in for help. they used fire drops, water drops from a couple of different agencies, including cal fire. 180 firefighters total were are out here to make sure that the homes were not in danger. about 100 homes were evacuated, mark, and the good news is now that the fire is contained, those people in the overnight hours were allowed to return to
