owing this all morning. we have live coverage as people are feeling the quake in the area. living in fremont, a lot of people there thought it was pretty violent. >> reporter: it was violent. i mean, it tsaed a good 10-15 seconds. it was right beneath me and it turned out it was on the hayward fault with it happened. i am at the 24 hour safeway. not a problem here. you can see a lot of workers inside at the time. they were stocking shelves. they tell me a couple of cans of beans fell down, but other than that, no injuries. no clean up to do. it could have been potentially damage. we have been talking about this all morning. you can see the wall of soda cans had that come down, it could have caused major injuries. if you were not up at the time,

a 6.3 is a strong earthquake. a 4.5 is a good wake up call. >> reporter: you know, the thing is it's not too bad now that we are smiling. during the it, i wasn't smiling. it's hearing the cracking sound and the rumbling sound and you don't know if it's still picking up speed or going up or down. fortunately, it wasn't so bad and that's why we are smiling. a lot of people laughing now, but i can promise you, i don't think anybody laughs during it. >> i think the worst part is not knowing. the napa quake started and kept going and going and going. it's that moment you don't know if it's going to end soon. this one ended and there's no reports of major damage. let's continue our coverage of the quake.

jackie is also talking a about the quake. hi, jackie. >> reporter: no damage and i was in the opposite end of the north bay and didn't feel a thing, but lots of people here in the fremont area did. in fact, i am here at the 7/11 which is over r open all night. they didn't have any damage, but nearby is a hotel and they definitely felt it. i talked with two people from detroit, obviously they don't have those kinds of wake up calls in detroit. they definitely felt it. it was on the -- i was on the website and checking out comments from people and people felt it all over the bay area. castro valley, antioch, san francisco, san jose, it was widespread that people felt the shaking.

i had the chance to talk with one person here at the 7:11. he said he felt it, but he is used to it. >> i was up at 2:00. i felt it and recognized it. >> reporter: how did it feel? how long? >> it felt like about five seconds. >> reporter: was it scary at all? >> no, i lived in l.a. so i am used to earthquakes. >> reporter: and, obviously, as i said earlier, not a lot of damage reported. i know bart basically had a delay of 10-15 minutes. it sounds like they are starting to get back on schedule. we are going to be out here all morning long. as we get more information, we will pass it along not only here live, but also on our web page. >> that's the thing, in this case, with the earthquake, if

you no longer have to worry about the major delays. >> that's good news there, a lot of people waiting for the bay bridge. >> this is not normal. thanks to some may maintenance work that was about 15 minutes late picking up the cones, it's backed up. i made this a hot spot because we don't normally see a back up at the 6:00 hour. not only are you slow at the pay gates, you are slow through the maze. that means we spill over to the 580 to the connector. it's through berkley and all the way across to the new eastern span. you may want to hop on bart to save a little bit of time as opposed to driving. this is about 25 minutes delayed getting into downtown. to the richmond, san ray fell,

the man police believe he killed his daughter, his mother and former girlfriend, a doctor. police say 30-year-old martin martinez is also the prime suspect in the murder of another child last year and he was arrested in that killing rather than the family massacre. now, questions are being raised as to whether the murders could have been presented. those killed are his mother and his one time girlfriend, dr. amanda cruz. one of the kin children killed was a daughter of martinez and cruz. police did not arrest martinez in the killings. they arrested him in the killing of a child last year. the child died in 2014 while martinez was looking after him.

the police say it took nine months to determine from forensic evidence proved the homicide. they didn't get an arrest warrant until after the killings. family and friends are remembering those killed in the area where the murders took place. people brought flowers and teddy bears and shared the memories of dr. amanda cruz and her two daughters. friends and family say she was a devoted pediatrician devoted to helping low income families. >> our consolation is that she is with her kits and awless been with herr kids. >> the pamly's nanny said that amanda always made time for her

children even with the death of her son christopher who died back in october. a man chased his roommates with a knife. this happened just before 7:00 last night. two women calling the police saying they were being chased by their male roommate with a knife. the police came and was shot. neighbors describe the scene. >> i was just sitting in my room. i heard three bangs. i looked at my clock and saw it was 5:56. i looked outside and i seen a bunch of cop cars around the corner and a fire engine and i looked at any neighbor and called him up and he said somebody had been stabbed or actually the guy pulled out a knife and he was coming towards the police officers and they ended up shooting him. >> two officers open fired at the man. he is recovering in the

hospital. the father of the pier 14 shooting will address the senate today pushing for change on sanctuary programs. he is going to talk about the murder of his daughter. the illegal immigrant who had been deported five times and had prior convictions, but because of the sanctuary program, he had been released despite of federal issues trying to keep him in custody. they didn't tell the feds they were releasing him. federal immigration officials are going to be testifying as well today at the senate so we will stream that live on our website at kron4.com. it starts at 7:00 this morning and also as soon as it happens, we will have the live coverage here on kron4. investigators are looking

it was a different way to be won up, right. i felt it and i'm right up the street from where the epicenter was. we live in a two story home. it really shook the second floor. it was about 15-20 seconds, but when you are experiencing it, it feels like minutes. the house looks fine, nothing fell off of the shelves so we are fine so far. it just shook our nerves. >> ho is the heavier sleeper, you, or your husband or the pets? sometimes you hear about one spouse feeling it and the other. >> reporter: my husband and i woke up at the same time and both said, did you feel that? it couldn't be a dream. it was one of those moments

the wine country. that's the wine country, santa cruz. about 4700 reports have come into the usgs. it was fairly widespread in terms of how it was felt. it's amazing. looking at the forecast for today, again, we are waking up to conditions that are cloudy. here's the live look out of walnut creek. here's how the cloud cover is going to move throughout the day. widespread clouds, even by noontime, still overcast. it really isn't until later this afternoon around 4:00 that we will get the chance to warm us up a little bit then the clouds will head back in throughout the evening. the temperatures will be cooler. we are starting in the 60s and ending up with highs only in

directions in and out of san francisco. it's been quiet throughout the morning. we'll see if it stays that way. 580 west, eight minutes from the toll plaza out towards highway 101. heavy about poos of -- pockets of traffic. if you are merging out of concord from 242 onto south 680, it's pretty pleasant through walnut creek. no crashes or stalls there. it's still packed out of tracy for the altamont valley. it's a great ride for dublin. minor traffic heading into downtown. no trouble spots. once again, bart is recovering from that system wide delay after a track inspection following the earthquake that happened this morning. all tracks have been cleared no

minutes after the quake. let's go to will who lives in fremont and he experienced the quake. >> reporter: i am smiling now, but i wasn't smiling at the time. when it happened, people were moderately scared to very scared. you can see the safeway bind me. this is -- behind me. this is a 24 hour safeway. no damage. they said the shelf was moving a little bit, but everything stayed where it should have stayed. you can see the wall of soda cans. i mean, if there was a big one, that would be down, but it's still up. people are getting up and going to work and other places. i spoke with this lovely family. you were up at the time. tell me what you felt. >> i felt the apartment start shaking and the wall start to

from 37 into nevado. no problems to highway 1 101. the dumbarton bridge is moving along. this is the slow traffic i was talking ants coming out of -- about coming out of richmond. your average drive time from panol to san francisco is 32. heavier than normal, no crashes or stalls to add to that, but if you have to head into san francisco this morning, add on an extra 20 minutes. back to you. we are learning more about the man who police believe killed his mother, his former girlfriend, his daughter and two other children over the weekend. police say 30-year-old martin martinez is also the prime suspect of a murder the 2014.

his girlfriend's child just 9 months ago and he was actually arrested for that killing rather than the family mastiff massacre in modesto at this point. the two adults killed were martinez's mother and his one time girlfriend, dr. amanda cruz and one of the children was the 6 month old daughter they shared as well as cruz's 6- year-old daughter and a five- year-old distant relative of cruz as well. a cousin of martinez is talking about what happened. jenna martinez says she was shocked by this. she rebs her cousin as being a fun loving person and she could never suspect he did this. >> not at all. that is why i was in shock. i didn't believe it. when i first saw his face there, i thought it was like when people fabricate things on facebook and i was like, this

miles canyon road. thousands felt it this morning. hi, jackie. >> reporter: thousands felt it, i didn't feel it. i live up in the north bay. it happened at 2:41 this morning. it was 4.0 on the richter scale, but many definitely felt it in this area. so far, we haven't had any major outers -- reports of damage. the reports of damage so far are basically pictures falling off of the walls or cans falling off o the shelves at stores. i had a chance to talk with folks in from detroit working in the area and they said they definitely felt something this morning. they are not used to it. it rattled their nerves a little bit. we have been talking with people all morning long trying to get a feeling of how strong

at the memorial stadium in berkley which speaks dreckly over the -- directly above hayward falls, people as far away as antioch, castro valley, all felt it, but particularly in the union city fremont area, you definitely felt it. >> yeah, that's the thing, it didn't cause damage, but if anyone is asleep, it wakes you up, you see everything is fine and you go back to bed. you want to know how big it was. >> and watching the rain in southern california, a 50-mile stretch on i-10 shut down after a bridge was washed out in the california desert. the officials hope they can have cars using the freeway in

a few weeks. the eastbound span collapsing, but the westbound span still there. a spokesperson for caltran says the workers plan on sheering up the -- shoring up the westbound side in a couple of weeks. and some highways in malibu are closed because of this rock slide. workers moved the rocks off of the road last night. no one was hurt. no word on when it will reopen. james is watching the weather. that was wild weather in southern california. it was. i was looking at the state satellite imagery. the bulk of it has moved off. nothing falling over l.a. proper this morning. they are getting a little bit

of a break. this is what we see outside at the moment. we have gray skies here over the bay bridge where things are looking overcast all around the bay. let's look at where we are seeing the temperature. well, leetle get -- let's get passed this map. we had about 12 or so after shocks after the earthquake, but all in all, we are doing okay. it was fairly well felt all the way down to places like santa cruz amazingly enough. it's going to be cooler this afternoon. we are looking at temperatures in the valley to be in the 80s which is about a 10-degree drop. that will be nice and the temperatures tonight to fall in the next 36-48 hours. the temperature will bounce back just in time for the weekend. it's going to be beautiful for the week ahead and more importantly, cool and that humidity is not going to be an issue for you, thankfully. all right, onto traffic.

let's see what you can expect as you head out the door, robin? hey, it's ugly in san francisco thanks to all of the earlier problems. we had late caltran work and now you are going to be sitting in traffic all the way across the bridge backed up. you are backed up to all connectors. westbound 80 is backed up all the way into panol now and once again slow across the bridge thanks to the earlier problems. if you have to use the golden gate bridge this morning, so far, so good coming from the north bay. it's a good ride across the span into san francisco as well to the richmond san ray feel bridge from castro to the toll to the west end, you are going to be dealing with the traffic, but it's not bad, that normal of what we would expect to the

6:00 hour. to the san mateo bridge, no problems across the span, but it's crowded. you are at 19 minutes, so it's not bad. you are heavy on the freeway, if you have to use southbound 880, you are going to be stuck in heave say traffic from -- heavy traffic. 44 minutes from 238 making the connection to 237 and a little bit heavy for south 68 680 if you are coming out of dub dublin this morning. just to mention bart, they are back on time. we had major delays this morning following the track inspection related to the earthquake. bart is reporting all trains are on schedule. no delays as of now. thank you, robin. new this morning, an 18- year-old woman could hold the
