. major breaking news this morning. an overwhelmingly destructive wildfire has ripped through the community of middletown. you're taking a look at video from overnight. homes, buildings, cars, trees, all going up in flames. this fire broke out yesterday afternoon and quickly spread. hundreds of people have been ordered to leave the area, and at first light we're going to find out how bad the damage there is. thanks for joining us. i wan to give you the latest information on this out of control wilefire. the so-called valley fire has burned 40,000 acres in less than 24 hours. it is zero percent contained
7:01 am
this morning as it relentlessly destroys everything in its path. evacuations have been ordered in parts of lake and napa counties. four firefighters were hurt fighting the flames. they were air lifted to a sacramento hospital. all are expected to survive. now let's show you where this is happening. the fire is burning in and around the town of middletown. it's about 20 miles south of clear lake. joining us on the phone this morning is emily smith with cal fire. good morning. what is the latest that you can bring us on how much acreage this fire has burned? >> good morning. the latest is 40,000 acres at zero percent contained. it's a very dynamic fire that's burning with lot of intensity. >> we have been reporting on fires for many, many years now and i can't remember a fire that has moved this fast this quickly in a matter of hours it's gone to some 40,000 acres. >> correct. it's very extreme fire behavior
7:02 am
that resources and firefighters have seen from the air and ground. >> tell us about the situation in middletown. what can you tell us about that community? >> the community of middletown was evacuated last night over the evening hours. we closed down highway 29 from tubs lane all the way to highway 29 and 53 in lower lake. we have resources in the area and with first light we're going to start getting the numbers for accountability on structures as well as lives. >> any idea on the number of people evacuated from middletown? >> i don't have a concrete number for you. i do know there's roughly 5,000 people without power. >> the video that we are looking at is so destructive and this fire spread so quickly through that community, i know you haven't had a chance to assess it, but looking at this
7:03 am
footage, it tells you how powerful this fire is. >> the valley incident was very powerful. it burned with a lot of intensity. we had weather conditions that dictated the fire behavior as well as very dry vegetation. our fire fight from air and ground focus yesterday was on life safety and getting people out of the area. >> what can you tell us about the evacuation centers that have been set up? >> we have two evacuation centers set up. one in napa county at the napa county fair grounds, and the second one is in the presbyterian church in kellseyville. >> and are they filled? >> we do know there are a large number the the kellseyville area. we are working with red cross to possibly open up additional evacuation centers. >> can you tell us anything on the condition of the four firefighters who were hurt. >> the four firefighters that
7:04 am
were injured on initial attack yesterday are in stable condition. >> that is emily smith from cal fearful thanks for your latest information. i wan to give you the latest from the fire line. avery harper is in lake county. >>reporter: good morning. i am at the napa county fair grounds at one of the evacuation centers where people would have been -- who have been evacuated are here. i am joined by sandy timmons who is running the evacuation center. can you tell me what kind of services you're providing for the people who have come out of here out of complete need? >> we've tried to set up a safe and secure place where they can begin to rest and recover from this ordeal. it's quite traumatic for all of them. we have cots, blankets, supplies. the community has been very generous to bring in extra supplies that we're allowed to accept such as water and that type of thing. we have partners that are going to come in today to help with

the animals. we have quite a few dogs, cats, chickens, quite a few things in here as well as large animals. the people in the shelter seem to be doing okay this morning. we've got breck coming from the -- breakfast from the school district, which is wonderful, and most of our supplies are fine. >>reporter: and can you tell me how many people are here and about what time they started streaming in last night? >> well, i got here about quarter to 8:00, something like that, and we already had 25 people at that time. they streamed in all night long. we were setting up cots and as far as the total number, i don't have an exact figure but i'm guessing around 200 right now, but we'll take a good count this morning when we do breakfast. >>reporter: and how many people can you accommodate? i know a lot of people have been sleeping with their cars, people with pets have been
7:06 am
outside. how many people can you accommodate here? >> we're opening another building. i haven't measured the building but it's twice as large as what we've got here, so i would say probably at least another 200. now, the people that slept in their cars did not because they have their pets. we allowed them to take a caught and we took blankets out to them, food for dogs was donated, water. we had an animal service come by. we've had a veterinarian come by and check some of the animals, and everybody seems to be secure right now. it was hectic last night but now we're getting into a routine. >>reporter: and i know people have been speaking about losing -- they believe they've lost everything in this fire. are there any sort of counseling services or any sort of psychological help available for these people? >> yes. we have mental health coming today. we have health service on the
7:07 am
premises right now and more coming today. and then at some point we will have what we call client case workers who work with the clients who have lost all of their belongings and they will provide what services we can give them and/or referrals. >>reporter: if people want to help, how can they help. >> the best help you can do is to donate money to the red cross and you can make it in the name of the valley fire if you want to, but it's best if you just put it to the disaster service fund. >>reporter: thank you so much. and we will be here all morning. we will be talking to some people. i know there are some middletown residents who are here who fear that they've lost everything, so we'll be here to bring you their stories coming up soon. >> thank you. that's avery harper reporting live from the red cross rescue center, the evacuation center. the major concern of course
7:08 am
is the weather. yesterday dry conditions, possibly the fire was caused by a lightning strike. a lot of wind there. what are we looking at today? >> exactly what you described there, and at least two of those elements have been taken out of it, at least this morning because what you see here on radar. you see rain. a lot of that is happening. maybe it's not striking the ground but it's moisturing up the atmosphere. it may be a problem with firefighters with fog to contend with. i was looking at some of the conditions that were knocking out of knoxville creek in that general area, and about 24 hours ago it was much dryer, then the winds kicked up, gusts in the 30 to 40 miles per hour range. those conditions have subsided now. here is a look just kind of in motion of that same kind of sub tropical moisture we talked about yesterday that did come across the bay area. it's all the overcast we had to contend with. that weather is to the north
7:09 am
and it's holding together there. current conditions from that knoxville station, temperatures at 62, humidity at 35%. that's low but it is better than it was, and our winds have subsided a little bit. the forecast today calls for slight shower possible, partly cloudy, that's okay at 79. smoke, mostly cloudy tonights at 56, but tomorrow may see a slight chance of a thunder shower and that's not so good. well, we first told you about the valley fire through a mobile push alert and you can stay up to date with the latest with the kron 4 mobile news app. it's free. and keep it here on kron 4 weekend. as we continue to follow the breaking news. coming up after the break, we have new pictures to show you coming boo the kron 4 newsroom. we'll be right back.

precipitation happening, it is moistening up the atmosphere. let's put the radar up there for realtime coverage. you see a mass of rain happening. it's maybe not a lot of help but there's a general idea of what we're dealing with now. the only other issue is during the day we might start to get the winds kicking up because that was what we had yesterday afternoon. we had the dry conditions couple with the fact of getting the winds. so those are the conditions we're dealing with now. a little moist at the surface. it's fairly quiet in the wake of everything, because what you see there is what we had generally speaking over the bay overnight or late last night. that's moved up to them. and checking livermore real quick, there was a cell that was covering up more of the town earlier. it's kind of falling apart, but at least earlier there were a
