this is the bay area new station, kron4 news starts now with breaking news. breaking news out of san jose this morning, strip mall on fire. take a look at this video from earlier this morning coming into the flames and smoke shooting into the air. this is what it looked like at about 4:30 am, and let's take a look at where that fire is burning. it is on center road, near lewis street in san jose. you can see highway 82 nearby. kron4 avery harper is at the scene and we want to get to her for the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. i am here on center road in san jose, in front of the shopping complex where fire crews are working to put out a fire that started in a supermarket back here inside of the complex.

you can see that there is still -- they are pouring water and also -- into the shopping center, where the fire has started, now this story is developing but i will tell you that crews were dispatched before 3 am and when they got here they said that there were no flames visible, just heavy smoke. they had to evacuate a mobile home nearby because there was so much smoke and they were afraid that the flames could reach that mobile home park. this is still a very active scene. crews are working to put out to the fire in they have the fire contained inside the grocery store where they believe that the fire started take a listen to what the fire captain on the scene had to say. the first place that we saw flames is when they broke through the roof on the backside of the building and started threatening the mobile home park. we evacuated some of the homes from there. at the peak, we had about 75 personnel fighting misfire.

the cause is still under investigation. we do not know what caused this fire, but is -- it has been contained to the building of origin. several businesses have been damaged by contained to that building. no mobile homes were damaged and most people have been allowed to return. timeline of chief tells me that they are still going to be here working to put out the flames that are still burning inside the supermarket that is here. they still have shoes that you chose is on the ground and they say they will not open up center road until they can get the fire out and then they are going to be beginning investigation to figure out what caused it. we will be here to update you when we have more information. back to you in the studio. >> any on any injuries? >> reporter: no one was inside the building at all when this happened no one was inside the entire shopping complex, so nobody was hurt, nobody was inside of the tiger no injuries reported.>> that is good news,

at what was going on in napa. and heavy wind in some places, high wind advisory remains in effect in parts of the bay area this morning that -- reports of damage to cars and buildings in san francisco, down trees as well. you were talking about the wind yesterday and we get a look at some of the weighted that were sustained throughout the day and into the evening last night. >> technically, we have when hanging around a little better national weather service for their part has canceled that for the viewing area. as you can see, highway patrol does it differently so there may be some advisories. red flag warning because the areas dry but the lightning, that was due to that low -- low overhead and we are left with morning fog at the golden gate, to give you a quick picture, right to the satellite and radar picture. some of the radar echoes from last night and we were -- it was right overhead. all of the dynamics can happen so we had a little bit of

lightning show going on. 50s on the board right now, and we do have drier air, less in the way of wind at even this morning, you'll see pretty much single digits if they are showing up at all. this will start to continue to subside throughout the day. red flag warning at that -- fire threat until 10 am this morning because of some of the fairly dry air and breeze that is left over and i will show you downtown san francisco what to expect temperatures are really jumping around a lot for the city like that. that is due to somewhat dry air and note that the wind is variable, 5 to 10 a nothing about this 20 miles per hour business like yesterday. breakdown, noon, 54 at the coast, chilly all day, 72 at the day, 75 a, 76 inlet, by about 5 pm, 71 for the. we will let you know what to expect in the forecast as we go into the work week. big news that we are following this morning, the latest on the gun man who shot and killed nine people at a community college in oregon. on saturday, police are revealing that the 26-year-old

chris harper mercer shot himself during the shootout with police. police also confirming that he was targeting christians. last night people who lived near the city of roseburg held a vigil, bringing together hundreds of people from eight different churches in the area. one pastor says that he has a very difficult job of organizing the funerals for the victims next week. this morning we are learning about some of the survivors, a mother of 116-year-old survivor says her daughter was shot in the back when she refused to tell the gunman her religion. according to her family, the teenager survived by playing dead. >> nursing student in her fourth day. when this incident occurred, she laid down on the ground and played dead. and that saved her life. >> coming up in about a half an hour, we will hear from the father of the shooter and what

he is saying about his son this morning. happening right now, police in fremont on the hunt for a 31-year-old armando petty get, wanted for the murder of his own mother. the victim is a woman in her 60s, found dead inside her apartment on monroe avenue. more on the investigation. >> we have been nervous about a. >> reporter: behind the walls.>> privacy and tranquility characteristics of an apartment complex made up of families who mostly keep to themselves. >> it was a shock to everybody. >> reporter: an area where crime typically does not trend. >> never heard of a car being broken into. >> reporter: until tuesday. >> within our own families, i would assume it would be a shot. >> reporter: this man's mother was found dead inside her own apartment. the extent of the violence that police say was severe. sergeant ricardo cortes says the 31-year-old omar monique pathogen and her mother -- his

mother in her 60s were roommates and at some point, something went terribly wrong. >> other people said that they were arguing. >> body discovered while officers carried out a welfare check. he was not around to answer questions. detectives arrived. >> where could he possibly be? >> we have information that he frequents oakland and san francisco. >> reporter: a motive not yet established and the manner of death not released. cortes will say that he may be armed with a gun and a warrant is out for his arrest. in fremont, which in all, kron 4 news. still ahead, weekend storms from hurricane joaquin and have caused historic flooding on the east coast and we have to do test dramatic video. california school shooting stopped before it happens. we have details on the plan that authorities say that they were able to thwart.

been prevented in the sierra foothills, four teenagers arrested for allegedly plotting to shoot students and teachers at their high school in paulding county. sheriff says detectives found evidence and says that it was very detailed in nature and also included names and victims and locations. >> we did find evidence which would include statements that this was a very, very serious threat. sheriff gave no names or ages for the four students at summerville high school because they are juveniles and authorities were tipped off by fellow students reported seeing suspicious activity and the four high school students are charged with conspiracy to commit assault. with deadly weapons. still ahead, fleet week and the bay area, show you the best places to watch the blue

back on kron4 news we get, catastrophic and historic flooding in south carolina, more than 100 water rescues to talk about and the worst is not over. think states are bracing for more water than they can handle. cnn nickel -- nick valencia has the story. >> reporter: massive storm traps over the east coast. from near wilmington north carolina to myrtle beach south carolina. millions of americans along the eastern seaboard affected by the wind and record-breaking rain. >> this is not just any rain. this is going to be the heaviest rainfall we have ever seen. >> reporter: and charleston south carolina, a deluge of

water, roadways more accustomed to traffic jams inundated by several feet of water. these strangers teamed up to help stranded people in their cars. >> we saw people floating around and decided to help. >> you do not know each other? helping hands? >> i think that we just had the same motive. as far as we are stuck here anyways, might as well help somebody. >> help is here. >> reporter: where there is crisis, those willing to lend a hand this stranded wedding party nearly missed the big day and if not for the last of the national guard, but not everyone was as fortunate. since thursday, four people killed in storm related incidents in north and south carolina. downed trees and power outages, posing problems for the first responders. >> i am a good citizen and i will obey and hole up in my apartment and clean out my dresser. >> reporter: brunswick county north carolina, the impact from the low pressure system substantial. up to 500 residents were evacuated in the coastal county

, flooding and flash flood watches are expected to last through the weekend. >> tough news for north carolina and especially south carolina is continued rains which we will keep track of. >> reporter: severe weather expected to persist through sunday and perhaps beyond heavy rains and -- anticipated to cause even more disaster and emergency. >> that is nick valencia reporting and i've got to tell you that the wedding party that they feature there is going to have a wedding day that they will remember for a variety of reasons. >> that is a good way to look at it. mister lemonade. they have a hurricane to contend with and the good news -- it is staying out to see which is good news. hurricane joaquin, on the satellite, and what they were talking about and showing you that low pressure system, kind of hanging around, maybe acting as a blocking mechanism. let's check on it. category 3 storm, packing winds of 115, and it is up at around

130 and this track is good, continuing out to see like this as you can see and what is amazing about this is is -- it still stays a hurricane all the way out to monday and even i think tuesday. it stays a hurricane up to those high latitudes and out there, another called current, labrador current that comes out of basically the arctic ocean, so that storm system is really a hurricane, holding together nicely. it has tenacity to it that does not want to give up but it is out to see and that is good news. some clouds and precipitation that happened from yesterday, bobo that continues to spin around in our backyard, drove the lighting that you saw a little bit out there but not much in terms of rain, we could use more of that but we are left with fairly dry air in the wake of everything going on, cooler air behind it. a little bit of a breeze to make note of. going forward in this forecast,

it will be one of a good nice temperatures for us and not as much of the intrusion ed -- of the wind. 50s on the board universally accept of into napa, 60, 65%, and the futurecast, let you know how the numbers come out, different than yesterday. out to about noon and some areas of the north bay and some of the bay shoreline hold onto the 60s. nice warm-up by the afternoon, and you can see the yellows covering everybody. not as much green along the coast so a decent day for the beaches, not so windy. all of that green returns by 9 pm. but we do not see the chilly 50s as much but some valleys will start to make its reappearance again. back to somewhat seasonality to some degree. 70s on the board you can see for the east bay shoreline, oakland 78, berkeley 72, 74 richmond and alameda -- they are to the far east valley, you will see, 81 perhaps -- that is a bit of a stretch and everybody pretty much in the upper 70s territory, expect more of the same in this forecast, we have kind of

oscillating temperatures for the next several days, clouds, and dell. then we see by next weekend, the big-time warm-up happening, lower to mid 90s approach of the inlet valve is, beach is not bad. upper 60s and maybe lower 70s. heating up for the blue angels. fleet week does start to mark, plenty of ways to enjoy the event and that includes watching the blue angels right here on kron4 next saturday, and they shall is the best spot to take in the sights and sounds of fleet week. >> reporter: miles of san francisco coastline, prime locations for people to take in the sights and sounds when the blue angels come to town and if you can see the rock, you are in a good spot, center stage for the show as the airspace around alcatraz. fisherman's wharf and pier 39, good places, especially near the water. unique viewing experience at the height street., five dollars you can watch from aborted these historic ships, pretty cool. get here early because the ships fill up fast.

breaking news out of san jose, strip mall on fire. take a look at this video from early this morning. flames and smoke shooting into the sky. that is what the scene looked like at about 4:30 am this morning, a look of where that fire continues to burn it has been contained. center road near lewis street in san jose. a fairly big strip mall. avery harper reporting live from the scene. you were able to get a close-up look at the damage. how is it looking? >> reporter: good morning. firefighters are still battling

those flames. i was not able to get too close to where they are working but you can see that they are still working to put out flames that are inside that supermarket that is your inside the center shopping complex. take a look at what the shopping center looked like when crews arrived, dispatched before 3 am and when they got here, no flames were visible. heavy smoke. because of that smoke, fire crews knew that there was a large fire. they had to shut off the power. they had to evacuate a mobile home park nearby. that was threatened by the flames. those residents have since been able to return home and again this is a very active scene. what it looks like now, a close- up of the damage that is visible from the parking lot. again, fire crews are still working to put out the fire. this is a large complex, about 16 stores, fire crews believe that the fire started in the

center market but they say that the cause of the fire is under investigation, no injuries have been reported, in this fire. the cause of the fire, again, is still unknown and fire crews are working to put out the fire and as long as they opposes on the street, much of central road will be closed off. they do not know if the shopping center will open today. i will update you. it seems that the fire started in the store, the grocery store, do we have any on damage to other stores in that strip mall? clementa pinckney there are some stores that are damaged because of the firefighting efforts. again, fire crews have not been able to go inside the stores because they are still working to put out the fire that is inside the supermarket. they do not know how many have been affected. >> reporter: avery harper. >> we will check back and we

continue to cover extreme weather from last night and into the morning, more pictures coming in to the newsroom, showing lightning in the bay area on this picture was taken at bay point, about 1:30 am, you can see the lightning bolt streaking across the sky. that scene was played out in many spots around the bay area and early we had a video from napa and we saw lightning striking there. a pretty dramatic video that we saw. a lot of folks complaining about the wins. i was at pleasant hill, arts and wine festival last night. very cold, windy. >> chile. >> bundling up. >> they took your advice. >> not so bad today. any festivals? >> i will check. >> talking about the lightning, showing you something really quick, the rotation left over and this low is departing but this is overhead, and during the day yesterday, driving the

wind and its arrival and all of that. with that overhead, that drives dynamics to bring some of the lighting that we had yesterday and it can have a strong wind or storm blowing overhead, thunder snow, so you can get these dynamics with the low close at hand which is what we had from yesterday. with regards to what we are left with, a look at the red flag warning, has been expired, this just happened. computers updated. good news. dry error left over. always a fire concern, but we had an earlier threat with the breeze we had. temperatures in the 50s, all over the board, santa rosa exception at 65, checking out san jose, look at these numbers. mid-70s, not the full story. look at the when, northwesterly, 5 to 10, far cry from yesterday in most locations, up to 15, 20 miles per hour. perhaps of the windbreaker will not be needed as much. back to other big news that we are following, after that campus massacre in oregon, president obama is once again asking congress to put politics aside and focus on stricter gun safety laws. the sheriff of roseburg oregon says that he strongly is against new gun legislation and this week's shooting does not

appear to have changed is my pick there is neither more with on -- sheriff's opinion on gun control. >> reporter: onto the national stage after the massacre at umpqua community college, douglas county sheriff a john hanlin talks tough and is not afraid to share his opinion. >> i will not name the shooter. i will not give him the credit he probably sought prior to this world. and cowardly act. >> reporter: his stance on the shooter cheered by many but some of his other beliefs are putting up dab in the middle of a fight over gun control. a letter he sent to vice president joe biden, one month after the shooting at sandy hook elementary. one of the deadliest in american history, gives everyone a good luck at his unwavering stance on gun control. it says in part, gun control is not the answer to preventing heinous crimes like school shootings. but now, a mass shooting has

hit him at home. so we asked him about his thoughts as the entire country asks, why is this happening in america yet again? and what will stop it? can you talk to me about your stance on the fact that you feel like gun control is not a potential answer? >> i understand your interest in that and i can appreciate that you have an interest in my position but like i have said a number of times this morning, we are focusing on getting this investigation completed. >> reporter: he did talk to us a bit about a controversial post on his facebook page that is also getting attention now. long before the encore college -- he reposted a viral video and that video delves into conspiracy theories involving the sandy hook shooting. it goes as far as to question weather some of the grieving parents were crisis actors. he writes, this makes me wonder who we can trust anymore and goes on to say, watch, listen,

and keep an open mind. did you post that? >> no matter. i know what you are referring to. that is not a conspiracy theory believe that i have. >> the father of the shooter is not talking publicly about his son, ian mercer said that he had a harmonious relationship with his son but mercer is struggling to understand how and why the shooting happened. the ads that he was stunned to learn that his son had accumulated so many guns. >> it has been as i said before devastating for me and my family. but we are not alone in this. my heart goes out to all of the families that were affected by this and i know words will not bring your families back and i know that nothing i can say can change what happened, but please believe me, my thoughts are with all of those families. and i hope that they can get through this. >> mercer says that there

a discount and it is cheaper than commercial or airport parking lots of people venting get a steady stream of income, second income which can help because it is expected to live in the bay area. it seems like a win-win, but it is not that simple. >> past friday, i came home and i had this enforcement note on my door. all right. they told me that i had to cease and desist or they would start noticing me for violation, $100 for the first day -- >> reporter: alinda harrington lives in san bruno and she has been using the site to stay in the bay area. >> i do not make enough money. >> reporter: other users were certain notices by the city of san bruno to stop renting out their driveways. >> generally the city does not allow commercial uses on residential property. so venting out your driveway for compensation, the city considers that to be a commercial use. >> reporter: i met with san bruno attorney who said that

besides the violating city ordinance it could have a negative impact on the neighborhoods by making street parking more difficult and that is a good point. i drove around san bruno and like most communities in the bay area, the neighborhood streets are packed, barely any street parking so if people rent out the driveway, that puts their car in the street and could make it more crowded. in linda's case, she happens to have a two our driveway and only one person a car and she only rents out one space so she is not impacting the neighbors in that way. the cofounder -- i asked him his take on this battle brewing between the city and residents. >> looking into what the zoning laws are for san bruno and in the meantime, we are fully committed to working with the city of san bruno to come up with something that works for everybody. there are a lot of people that are using this income for their mortgages, for their kids tuition and these are real people. >> reporter: it with the tech trend, gabe slate. if you would like to connect, you can add him on facebook, follow him on twitter or email him.

mall is located. in the south bay, san jose near lewis street. we want to go to k ron 4's avery harper, from live on the scene. you got an update from the fire officials a short time ago. >> good morning, yes, there are a lot that firefighterssy they don't know about the fire, yet, because they are still working to put it out. let's see what is going on. they are still trying to drench the shopping center with massive hoses. they say it is pouring 1,000- gallons a minute. take a look at what it looked like earlier. crews were dispatched at 3:00 in the morning. when they got here, no flames were visible, just heavy smoke. fire crews knew there was a very large fire inside, they had to shut the water off and

last check. we see the warmup happen, controlled most of the bay, although 60, a lot of the north bay still at that point and east bay and parts of the peninsula, everybody gets in the 70s, including downtown san francisco and east bay shore line looks like as well as the north bay. it looks like wine country warms up to the 80s and then at 9:00, back to the business of the 60s. tonight, some of the valleys won't reach it, but 50s. a little bit of the dry air left over of we have an on -- we see east bay temperatures, not too bad in the 70s. far east bay, numbers in the upper 70s and lower 80s. we see temperatures pretty controlled for the next several days until we get to the end of the week, high pressure builds, off shore wind, warmer temperatures in the 90s for the inland valley.

let's look at where the fire is burning in the south bay. it's on center road near lewis street that's a very busy area. that's where we find kron 4's avery harper. you have an updated on road closures in the area. it's going to effect traffic there. >> reporter: good morning, marty, this row behind me, center rojas it closed for much of the morning as crews battle the flames inside of the shopping complex behind me. they have just reopened the street to traffic. i'm going step out of the way to show you what is still going on here at the shopping complex. firefighters are still working to put out the blaze. they are pouring thousands of gallons of water inside of the shopping complex. they say it's still very hot there and they don't want any flames to rekindle or pop up. take a look at what the shopping center looked like earlier, crews were dispatched before 3:00. when they got here, no flames

between 7500 and 8,000-gallons a minute. right now, it's only 2,000. but the drains in the parking lot are all plugged. he we don't want to flood the businesses downstream, public works out here, they will suck all of the debris out of the drains so that the drains stay open and we don't end up flooding the good businesses downstream from us. >> all of these businesses are closed right now, any expectation about when they can reopen. >> the ones that were not damaged by the fire. it's just the ones in the building where the fire started, they will probably be able to open up tomorrow the ones in the billing that were detroyed by the fire. the building has to be rebuilt. that could be a year or more. >> there is alot of people out here watching and kind of gawking at what is going on here does it make it any more difficult to fight the fire and make sure you all do your job well? >> it always make it is difficult when we have people that want to watch us.

killed nine people. on saturday, police revealed 26- year-old chris harper mercer shot and killed himself during a shootout with police. police confirmed mercer was targeting christians. last night, people held a vigil, bringing together hundreds of people from eight different churches in the area. one pastor said he has the very difficult job of organizing the funerals for the victims. also, we are learning more about one of the survivors one mother said her daughter was shot in the back when she refused to tell the gunman her religion. according to the family, she survived by playing dead. >> she was a nursing student. when this incident occurred, she laid down on the ground and played dead. of >> well, coming up in a half

sea, not directly impacting all of this. it's probably fortunate we didn't have a mixture to have a sandy like repeat situation. but, here it is, hurricane what keen, we have been talking about. max winds, 110, gusts up to 132, watching it go forward, we like this track. it keep it is out to sea. it becomes a category 1 storm by tomorrow, but remains that way tuesday even into wednesday. it may go down to a tropical storm. by the time it gets way up there. it's mixing with alot of cold water. cold water has not mixed well for tropical systems. one of the reasons, the west coast doesn't get these types of scenarios. it looks like it's not going to be a threat to land over the projection from the hurricane center. we had our own rain event. we somehow rainshowers happen in the north end of the bay and 2/10th.

now to the breaking news we have been covering all morning from san jose, a major fire at a strip mall. this is from video from 4:30 this morning. there are still some firefighters at the scene, right now in what is a very busy area in san jose, taking a look at the map the fire continues to smolder at center road near lewis street. we have good news in that all of the roads in the area are now open. we want to get the latest from avery harper, who continues to report live from the scene. avery, good morning. >> good morning, i'm here at the shopping center complex where firefighters are still working to put out the place that started inside of a grocery store. i'm told all of the businesses will remain closed i'm going to step out of the way to show what you is going on here at the scene. firefighters are still on hoses up in the air.

they are shooting thousands of gallons of water into the shopping complex because they want to make sure the fire doesn't reegg knit. also, there are some firefighters that are trying to shovel ought some of the debris that has fallen into the drains. a lot of the water has been collecting because they have been putting so much water into the shopping complex, now, take a look at what the fire looked like earlier this morning when firefighters arrived. crews were dispatched here, when they arrived, heavy smoke was visible from outside, which indicated there was a very large fire burning inside of the grocery store. the damage is more visible. crews are still dousing that building with thousands of gallons of water to make sure the back fire doesn't reignite. i'm told the walls inside were crumbling and the building will likely have to be demolished. coming back live here in san jose, fire officials tell me there is so much debris inside

of the grocery store, it's likely we may never know the cause of this fire. back to you. onto other news this morning, we continue to cover the extreme weather so many people around the bay area are talking about this morning, more pictures coming into the newsroom, showing lightning in the bay area. this picture was taken at bay point in the east bay at 1:30 this morning. you can you see the lightning bolt streaking across the sky. we have seen the video all morning long from napa, quite a lightning show, the other big story, the wind. a lot of wind we had to deal with. it has departed us and the temperatures, today will feel a lot warmer than yesterday. that's the cooling effect that we did from yesterday, temperatures starting to pounce a little bit. napa up to 69, 64 santo rosa. remember, when you have dry air

way, sure, high clouds will stream in. there you see it on radar, the beginning of this loop. very impressive cells when we see it from radar. it had to fight through alot of raw air. here's a look at temperatures. mid-60s already in the north bay. you head to the east, look at this, lower 60s to be had at the wine country, napa at 68. meanwhile, 50s on the board. let's go and check the temperatures out, here, future cast 4 going forward. there we see some 60s hanging on in parts of the east bay shore line up to the north bay. by the afternoon, that's when we get the warming going on. alot of 80s thrown in here throughout the bay and we go into this evening and the 60s come back pretty quickly. dry air tends to do that, moving around like that, cooling and heating during the day.
