the big news this morning, a hiker found shot to death and the killer still on the loose this morning. we have been following this story. joining us live approximate with the update, jackie? . >>reporter: good morning. i'm at the marine county sheriff's office. still looking for the killer or killers of the 78-year-old man found dead on a trail, just west of fairfax. released the surveillance video of two people that may have knowledge of this case. here's the surveillance video. could be as many as three people, a woman and two men. a convenience store a little bit east of where the murder took place on monday night. yesterday, we covered the story, it was on old railroad grave trail where they discovered the body of 78-year- old steve carter.

new this morning, another case of bedbug infestation at a bay area library. annie hong is at the breaking news desk to tell us where. >> reporter: the menlo park library on alma street is closed this morning, after they found a bedbug in a public seating area. the entire library will be closed through at least tonight so that pest control workers can inspect, clean and treat the library. city managers say this was an isolated incident in one area of the library, but the whole library will be searched. a bedbug sniffing dog will evaluate the area tomorrow. the bell haven branch library will remain open today. this is the fourth bay area library to close its doors because of bedbugs in just three weeks. last week, the mitchell park library in palo alto closed because of bedbug infestations and the berkeley north branch library was closed two weeks ago after bed bugs were found. back to you. >> thank you, annie.

happening now, a warning to parents in the north bay. a man tried to lure a 10-year- old girl into his car in rohnert park in the area of beverly drive and barry court. the man offered the girl, repeatedly offered her a ride as she was walking home from school. he then drove off as soon as another car pulled up behind him. police are looking for the man this morning. we're learning more about the young woman found dead in golden gate park in san francisco last weekend. she has now been identified as 23-year-old audrey kerry. kerry was found in a wooded area by jfk drive and bernice rogers way. kerry was a tourist visiting from quebec. relatives say she was on her first solo backpacking trip that would have taken her all the way to europe. it's unclear if kerry attended the bluegrass festival going on over the weekend. her body was found beaten saturday morning about a half mile away from the festival. >> the investigation where she

california are launching a drive for a referendum to overturn the law. a group called seniors against suicide filed paperwork with the attorney general's office yesterday, asking that the issue be placed on the ballot in november of 2016. they will have to collect more than 365,000 signatures. governor jerry brown signed the bill into law on monday, allowing doctors to prescribe legal drugs to terminally ill patient so they could end their own lives. and the valley fire, to our north, now 100% contained. more than 76,000 acres were burned across three counties since the fire started last month. four people died. 1307 homes were destroyed. the red cross and salvation army have been helping those affected since the fire first broke out. thousands of people who were evacuated are owl allowed back into their neighborhoods. 5:07 now. the search for a bay area tech worker has been suspended after his boat capsized in alameda county on friday.

crews say they are temporarily suspending their search at lake deval, 10 miles from livermore. the man has been missing since friday. his boat capsized about 50 yards from shore. everyone else on that same boat made it safely back to shore, but he is missing. the east bay park officials say the boat was over capacity when it started to fill up with water. the man was a salesforce coworker, out there doing team building activities. salesforce issued a statement saying their thoughts are with his family and friends. happening today, governor jerry brown is expected to sign an aggressive climate change bill to increase the state's renewable electricity. the measure would increase california's renewable electricity use to 50% and double energy efficiency on existing buildings by the year 2030. california is already on target to generate at least a third of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020. and yesterday, the governor made history after signing a

tough new equal pay law. the law allows women to allege pay discrimination based on wages paid to other employees for similar work. it also puts the burden on employers to prove a man's higher pay is based on factors other than gender. the law also protects workers from retaliation for asking about how much other people make. the governor says he's also considering a law banning companies from using previous salary information to justify paying women less than men. about 500 nurses are on strike once again today in contra costa county. let's take a look at video from yesterday's protests at the county regional medical center. the strike follows more than 13 months of talks with the board of supervisors. the nurses want pay raises and benefits matching that of other bay area hospital employees. contra costa county public hospital nurses make 20 to 30% less than private hospitals in the bay area. and sonoma county sheriff's department is under fire.

toward the 101-580 interchange. south carolina still feeling the effects of unprecedented flooding. at least 15 people are dead and damages are estimated to top a billion dollars. people are stepping up to help with relief efforts. helicopters have been flying over the area, dropping sandbags and equipment to repair dams. and residents of upstate carolina are stepping up to support affected communities, donating food, water and toys to help displaced neighbors. >> this is a time of faith, a time of strength and a time of taking care of each other and neighbors taking care of neighbors. if we do that, we will come out of this better than we have before. >> i read in the news this morning they had a really urgent need. i didn't hesitate to drop everything and put as much water as i could in my car and delivered it as soon as i could. >> rescue efforts are also under way in north carolina, where severe flooding has killed at least two people. this morning, people are asking why a cargo ship set sail out of jacksonville to

puerto rico last week, as hurricane joaquin was approaching. the ship went missing last week. all that's been found so far is debris, but one body has been found as well. communities along the east coast held vigils last night for the 33 members on board the el faro cargo ship. the coast guard saying it sank. search crews found debris spread over more than 220 square miles. joaquin was still a tropical storm when the ship left jacksonville, florida. the company that owns the boat says the weather seemed favorable at the time and there were no reports from the captain that seemed alarming until they received a report that the ship lost power. the ntsb is investigating. new questions about hillary clinton's private e-mail server. some e-mails from the company that maintained the server say they felt pressure by her team to reduce how long they keep data from the server about backup. this is according to a letter from republican senator ron johnson. one e-mail suggests clinton's team told the company to cut

the backups to 30 days. the unidentified employee also wrote about being concerned that there was some kind of cover-up going on. the e-mail was sent right after the fbi started looking into the server issue. auto workers and fiat chrysler are preparing to walk off the job. the union has rejected a deal and authorized a strike. the current contract runs out at 11:59 tonight. the union and the automaker have been in contentious contract negotiations for a while now. workers refused to ratify a contract plan that was reached between the leadership of the union and the company. members voted overwhelmingly to authorize the strike. the strike would be the first in the industry since 2007. test results were released on the whale carcass that washed ashore at the coyote hills park last month. it appears the whale had been injured by a boat propeller. although the injury didn't go deeper than a layer of blubber, the whale also had a spine

problem which limited its ability to find food and that may have made it more vulnerable to getting injured by the passing boat. it's still unclear what caused the whale's death. and this morning, a richmond man is facing charges after a woman was attacked with a beebee gun at wildcat canyon park on sunday. police arrested the 21-year-old suspect after a woman was shot in the forehead while hiking on that trail. witnesses helped police find the suspect who was hiding behind the tree with that weapon. police are investigating whether the same man is behind two other beebee gun attacks in the same park. they say the man has a history of contact with richmond police. health experts, school officials and air quality officials are working together to raise awareness about the dangers of idling your car. air quality officials have been monitoring schools and they found high levels of benzene, formaldehyde and other toxic

emissions during the afternoon hours, when a lot of people leave their car running waiting for kids. they say toxic high levels in the air coincide with the parents idling their cars. health experts say by leaving the car on, it increases children's risks of getting asthma and other respiratory problems. they suggest just turn the car off while waiting for the kids. a plane forced to make an emergency landing after complications with a pilot midflight. the most recent happening yesterday and the flight was headed to sfo. it was a united airlines flight. it left houston and it had to be diverted to albuquerque because the copilot lost consciousness. the copilot was in stable condition and able to walk off of the plane on his own. that flight was carrying about 200 passengers. earlier this week, we told you about the american airlines pilot who died in the middle of his flight. that flight also was safely diverted. still ahead on the morning news, one airline is making it easier to get to europe from

no problems for the 92 ride over to the 101/92 interchange, an 11-minute trip time out of hayward. >> thank you, george. 5:31. big news we're following this morning. a hiker found shot to death on a trail in marin county and the shooter still on the loose. jackie cisle is live in marin county with the latest on the search for three people of interest. jackie? >> reporter: good morning, daria. i'm here at the marin county sheriff's office and they are still looking for the shooter or shooters that were involved in the killing of a 67-year-old man on a popular north bay trail on monday night. in fact, you talked about it. there are people of interest at the marin county sheriff's department are anxious to talk to. in fact, yesterday, they released surveillance video shot at a convenience store just a little bit east of where the murder took place. they say there were three people, two men and a woman involved in it. they did release video of one of the men and the woman

involved in this, or they are anxious to talk to. they also believe the people, the person who shot and killed 67-year-old steve carter on the popular old railroad grade trail on monday night may have also stolen his car. all this started on monday around 6:00 when a hiker found the body of 67-year-old steve carter shot multiple times. carter was pronounced dead at the scene. his dog survived the shooting. since then, authorities fanned out in the whole area, or surrounding that area, looking for clues to potentially lead them to potential suspects in this case. there are three people of interest the marin county sheriff's office want to talk to. he described them to us yesterday. >> one of the men was described

threatening his fellow classmates. in the post, it showed the student holding a rifle, along with a caption that said harm would come to people who showed up at school the next day. whether the student was being serious or making a joke, officers say they take threats like these very seriously. >> he made a couple of statements indicating that he thought it was a joke or thought it was funny to post something like that. obviously, the officers spent quite a bit of time talking with him and his parents. they understand the severity, if they didn't before, of making these kinds of threats in this environment, especially when made toward a school or a vulnerable population. >> fairfield police arrested the student at his home the same day threats were made. officers also found a 22- caliber rifle, the same one pictured in the photograph. happening now, the san mateo county sheriff's office is warning residents of a telephone scam. somebody is claiming to be with the sheriff's office and they call and try to convince you that you owe fees for missing jury duty.

events. the university now officially endorses the warriors' proposed plan. staff previously stated patient safety needed to be insured and that overlapping events at the nearby at&t park could prove disastrous for patients trying to get medical treatment. the san jose unified school district is making sat tests for free. as of now, less than half of the school district's population takes the tests, but now tests are free for all high school juniors, regardless of family's income. seniors take advanced placement and college entrants exams, also benefiting. the district is lowering the cost of the ap test from nearly $100 to just $5. so all families that want the discount on the exams must also apply for subsidized lunches. the district says it set aside half a million dollars for college exams this year and it's something they plan on

temperatures going this afternoon. a quick look at zone forecast for the south bay shows that san jose should warm up to 79 degrees. we'll see a handful of low 80s as well. 81 for campbell. 82 for morgan hill. so a nice day, mostly sunny and very comfortable temperatures in the south bay. we'll actually see that all around the bay with inland communities maybe adding one or two degrees over yesterday's temperatures. that's what's in store for today. another nice one and the gradual warmup is continuing as we make our way through the rest of the work week. by the weekend, we keep saying we'll get inland highs close to the 80-degree mark. along the bay, picture perfect for this weekend's fleet week. now to traffic. not too bad, james. there is traffic. it is a commute, after all. here at the bay bridge, metering lights were activated about 5 minutes earlier than usual as a consequence, we have a backup, but not as bad as i feared. still just a 16-minute trip

one of the dates when the incident occurred. thousands of federal inmates are set to be released from prison beginning next month as part of a cost-cutting measure to try to reduce the prison population. 6000 inmates are set to be freed in november. they will be the first of what could eventually be tens of thousands of inmates eligible for release. the people being freed are all drug offenders who went through appeals processes. this will be the largest one- time release of federal prisoners. harvard's debate team has lost to a group of inmates. a trio from the harvard debating union squared off against three inmates at the new york correctional facility last month and the inmates won an hour debate. it's not the first major victory they have had. since 2014, the prisoners have beaten teams, including west point military academy and the

who shot a woman to death tuesday night. it all happened eight last night at 1:49 mason street. take a look at what it looked like when police arrived. they found a woman with a gunshot wound in her torso. they couldn't do much. she died at the scene. they were trying to identify a person of interest. they were brought into the tenderloin district offices. no word on whether that person will face charges. they have not identified the victim or the person of interest. and just to give you an idea of where this all happened. take a look at the map. it is object mason street. >> steps from the west field mall. that is a very, busy area. now, i am told this is still a very active investigation and police are asking that if you have any information about the incident that took place last night. that you contact the anonymous tip line and they will be hoping up at eight and able to
