7:04 am
answers now. this is what it looked like. we had so many pictures of flooding into the newsroom, e- mails, phone calls, the phone lines were lighting up from people all over california seeing this thing, and as far inland as nevada. from the pictures you can see something that looks like a white spotlight kind of piercing through the clouds there and it is up, we are told, for about a minute. i saw it personally out in antioch because i was driving down highway four. i only saw it for about five seconds. i caught the tail end of it. it was there for about 50 to 55 seconds, just after 6:30 saturday evening. now, as you can imagine, there has been quite a buzz all over the bay area about this thing, all over california really about this thing, i spoke to one woman who saw it as she was driving down in san jose. >> it kind of streaked, bright, still going across the sky and then when i looked over it started to get bigger in the streak and i thought, i thought

no workers at this time. >> i guess i thought he looked like he was dressed for the tundra. >> when i see snow, i would think cold. i would think it wrong for somebody to walk out in shorts but you and i are impressed with different things. >> i just was noting that. snow maker there. you said that was -- >> hopefully it's real snow. >> they are going to get real snow. this is just the beginning, just the cocktail hour now. big stuff happening tomorrow and that's the cold air aloft going to bring the snow levels down. we can see the snow levels drop below 5000 feet with all of this. that's a little bit of a better effort than we had last go around. here's what it looks on stormtracker four in the north bay, not overly impressive we have right now, sure. we are actually going to have a boom of moisture moving through along the front later on and that's going to cover a good portion of the general bay area, that's downtown san francisco off to the east bay and down to the south bay, the
7:12 am
models will show you all that. we can see this in just a bit. right now on the satellite and radar, this is what we are talking about, somewhat modest here making its way through wine country, sure, but this plume of moisture added to the cold air, that's exactly what we need, so that's what's going to drive everything in terms of the heavier precipitation happening comparatively speaking for today. a look at our numbers right now, a lot of 40s on the board, particularly around the bay shoreline, oakland at 50, richmond at 56, napa 45. remember the cloud cover and shower activity right now is in that general region and to the south and east where it hasn't made its progress yet. the far east bay, pleasanton at 41, livermore at 42. forward to this period, coming in from the west. look at that, that's a plume of moisture i'm getting. concord down to redwood city covering a lot of the peninsula and of course the south bay is next on the line. this puts us at about noon so it will be a bit of an afternoon affair too, particularly to points south
7:13 am
and east. the north bay actually starts to clear up in the afternoon hours and then at that point for most people after that first wave moves through, it's going to be the spotty, light drizzle type of showers left over, somewhat variable clouds almost until the next shoe comes in right here, you see, this takes us to about 4:00 a.m., bull's-eye in the city before going across the bay itself and we see a lot more upstream happening to about 10:00 a.m. or so. by the afternoon starts to taper off again. what we have with this second batch, this colder air upstairs, the drive, the instability. futurecast 4, in terms of the temperatures, remember where the rain is coming from, starting to clear the north bay by 3:00 this afternoon. maybe some daytime heating lets the temperatures bounce a bit. by 9:00 p.m., it's going to be a chilly night for everybody involved. get a closer inspection of highs today along the east bay shoreline, near about 60 or so, insulated and buffered because of the marine effect on the
7:14 am
general bay. meanwhile you go further to the east, you don't get that help, so little cooler, upper 50s at work here, antioch at 60. 55 going on for pittsburgh but the seven-day forecast again pencil in for monday, as kind of an active morning at least and look how cold, 54 for those inland regions, 54 also at the coast and we gradually warm up for the week ahead. now, tuesday in theory should be kind of a mostly sunny day but because of the surface moisture and the cold air aloft, we may create clouds again from the leftover moisture and then gradually warming up rest of the week. saying that they are sending criminals is wrong. >> a large crowd gathered outside of nbc studios in new york city saturday night to protest donald trump. the republican presidential front runner hosted "saturday night live" last night. the crowd was protesting trump's comments on immigration. back in august he said many of the mexican immigrants crossing the border were criminals and
7:15 am
rapists. more than 100 protesters showed up outside the studio before the show began. and with the next republican presidential debate just two days away, dr. ben carson has seen his numbers actually rise in the polls. in some cases he's even passed trump as the front runner but now some controversial comments from his past are starting to raise some eyebrows. cnn's tom foreman takes a look at some of those comments. >> i'm ben carson and i'm a candidate for president. >> reporter: from his first steps on the campaign trail, carson has fearlessly admitted -- >> there are a lot of policies that i lack knowledge of, you know, it's a false narrative that you have to know everything. >> reporter: but some of his past statements about what he does know are startling on healthcare reform -- >> obamacare is really, i think, the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery. >> reporter: on religion.
7:16 am
>> i would not advocate that we put a muslim in charge of this nation. >> reporter: on how people should respond to a rampaging gunman. >> i would not just stand there and let him shoot me. i would say, hey, guys, everybody attack him. he may shoot me but he can't get us all. >> reporter: even on the holocaust. >> i think the likelihood of hitly being able to accomplish his goals would have been greatly diminished if the people had been armed. >> reporter: some of his statements are rooted in his faith and fly in the face of science, missing the big bang therapy as pure fantasy, speculating about an alternative use for the great pyramids long considered burial chambers. >> my own personal theory is that joseph built the pyramid in order to store grain. >> but others are much more explosive like his comment about homosexuality and incarceration. >> a lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight and when they come out they are gay. so did something happen while they were in there?
7:17 am
>> reporter: carson backed off from that within hours and apologizing saying i do not pretend to know how every individual came to their sexual orientation. >> that was tom foreman reporting for us this morning. the next republican presidential debate set for tuesday night. in a few short months super bowl 50 will be here. san francisco hosts the sporting event of the year at levi's stadium in santa clara. more than 1400 volunteers travel from all over the bay area for their orientation. the event yesterday was held at the may sonic theater -- masonic theater. >> great showcase for our city. we love watching the super bowl. wish we were a part of it. >> something we can say we have done and experienced so it's going to be awesome. >> the volunteers got to see their uniforms and backpacks unveiled. they also learned about the new app they need to log in and sign up for their shift. the super bowl host committee estimates about 7500 volunteers
7:18 am

7:24 am
how much rain will we get? well, dave is tracking that. for that, let me toss it over to my colleague dave. when, how much and how cold will we be today? all those questions we have for you. good morning. >> good morning. here's a live look at sfo and couple of shots that we have been showing you here, you can see all the low lying cloudiness, kind of a stratus clouds that are here. that may actually break up a little bit later on this afternoon after we get some moisture moving on through. now, we have a front that's doing its performance, and usually post a front you get clearing going on. we may get that in the north bay and get sun coming out. but because of the moisture and disturbance that may generate a little more cloud cover. the cold air has yet to get
7:25 am
here yet. here's a live look at stormtracker four which you can get on your app and follow us online too at kron4.com. covering the north bay in terms of proper, this, as it gets more moisture moved in here, will cover more of the bay in terms of san francisco and getting also the east bay and the south bay involved in all of that. that will happen later on today. here it is on the satellite and the radar, not particularly that impressive. this is all far northern california. where is everything? it's actually still out to sea here but it will be riding the front through the day today so actually north bay may actually get most of its activity within the next couple of hours and the skies may open up a touch later on for today. we got lower 40s in the far east bay, fairly clear overnight, allow cooling to happen, buffered by the bay itself, the bay shoreline is around 50 or so, up to the north bay and middle 40s because that's where the shot of precipitation was happening and along the peninsula noticeably warmer or milder, lower 50s at work there. here's what's happening in downtown san francisco in terms
7:26 am
of temperatures. we are going to go with 59 by noon, 58 or so by 2:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m. at 58 and then dropping down to the lower 50s later on in the afternoon. again, buffered because of the pacific and the bay itself all around, water all around. right now we are talking about temperatures 48 going on at the coast, 43 inland with the bay at about 50, then by noon, let's call it cloudy and scattered showers, although again in the north bay by that point it would probably be done. 58 for the coast, 61 at the bay, 57 inland, and then by 5:00 p.m. we are going to stay mostly cloudy and cool because the lion's share of anything anybody gets for today's performance, that will be by that point and we are going to go into kind of a drizzle to a lightly wildly scarlett shower event that -- scattered shower event that carries us into the overnight. then by tomorrow morning, another batch to look out for, that will have claps of thunder thrown in. we've got 60s that hover around the bay shoreline, believe it or not because it's buffered by the mild conditions there. upper 50s in the north bay which may only get there
7:27 am
because we may see the skies open up a little bit. coming up in a touch, we are going to show you -- run you through these models and let you know how this comes together plus a look at those temperatures and there's an improvement in the seven day as well. all of this rain gives us a good tease, a little sample of what we can expect come rain season. el niño, the pacific ocean is getting a little bit warmer and that's because of the strengthening el niño. if predictions are right we will get a heaping helping of much needed rain after our four- year drought. it's historic, we definitely need the rain but sometimes even too much rain is a problem, especially when we need the rain, there are parts in san francisco that have seen its fair share of flooding so we thank -- we sent kron4's marie kelly out there. >> reporter: hired a crew to dig up his parking lot and then build it up to be higher than the street. that's to keep what happened many times before from happening again. this cell phone video from last

7:29 am
end up actually turning that money down. he says the city attorney is asking him to sign something that would make him liable if the flood work doesn't do what it's supposed to and because floodwaters from his parking lot have run into his neighbors' property in the past, he's afraid accepting the city's money under these conditions will cost him a lot more in the long run. >> i'm a small business and i have to be careful, $30,000 might save me a whole lot more liability. >> reporter: the city says their floodwater grant program is just a stopgap measure until they can work out a sleuths to -- solution to try to keep this area from flooding during heavy downpours but they expect that to take years to engineer and cost hundreds of millions if not billions. maureen kelly, kron4 news. major breaking news that we are following for you from the south bay. there is a big fire burning at an apartment complex in san jose, take a look at these pictures into the kron4 newsroom over the past hour. you can see just how

origin of the in-flight breakup. isis already said it carried out the attack. a u.s. official told cnn that an internal message from the terror group in the sinai peninsula could indicate they were responsible. flight 9268 left the egyptian resort of sharm el-sheikh heading to st. petersburg russia when it dropped off the radar 23 minutes into the flight. i'm paulo sand vall reporting -- sandoval reporting. we have been telling you all morning about the veterans day parade in san francisco. that starts at 11:00 in the morning, so about 2 1/2 hours from now. right now we want to talk about something more serious, the struggles some veterans face. the local -- a local service member spoke with kron4 and she shares her battles with ptsd. her message, there's always hope. >> reporter: do you regret your service? >> absolutely not, absolutely not. >> reporter: not a surprising answer coming from a soldier,
7:33 am
but considering what oakland native melissa mar dwayne experienced in the u.s. army, you couldn't fault her for wanting to have some moments back. >> i've been suicidal, i've had ptsd, traumatic brain injury and those are definitely injuries not visible so a lot of people don't think they exist. >> reporter: they sure do. today she is a field representative for a contra costa county supervisor a single mother raising three kids in antioch. in 2005 she enlisted in the army as a dental specialist and eventually deployed to iraq where she was wounded by a more tore and -- mortar and later a victim of sexual assault. >> how do you get through that? >> you don't. you learn how to deal with it. i don't think it's something that will ever leave me. it's become who i am. >> reporter: and that's and -- and an advocate for veterans in need of help. medically discharged from the army in 2013, last month margain and some 900 others

the railway company says some of the 25 derailed cars were empty auto rack and tanker cars carrying ethanol. they did not say how much leaked into the river and how far it spread. residents in alma, wisconsin say it was only a matter of time until something like this happened. >> you always worry about a derailment when you live -- if you look at the city of elma, the rail is located next to the city but you do always have that concern there's a lot more traffic and so we have been planning. we knew that this would probably happen at some time. >> the railway says the ethanol leak is not a threat to the public and the federal railroad administration will continue to investigate what caused this derailment. we are going to monitor that situation. we are also monitoring the weather. rain headed our way and, dave, you said only just a few hours from now. it's in the north, i know that, but it will be over us by noon? >> yeah, looks like down to the
7:36 am
south bay by noon into the early afternoon and then after that point, the batch that we are talking about at that point, which you're referring to, after that, we are into a light drizzle, maybe little patches of light rain here and there. and skies actually opening up in spots today, as that will then lead, it was a low we are talking about, until monday morning's event, which will be rocking and rolling with maybe a couple of claps of thunder or potentially hail and you have colder air aloft, also going to lower the snow levels by the time it gets off to our mountains off to the east. so perhaps 2500 feet or maybe 3000 feet in elevation, stormtracker four, you're talking about the rain up in the north bay, here the progress, making itself known in napa as well so pretty close but still out to sea and that's what we are watching here too, you can see from the radar barely showing up there, that which will make it through the city through san francisco, the east bay and down to the south bay and again timing appears to take us into the early
7:37 am
afternoon. so then again after all that is said and done, we are going to take a lull with all of this and that's basically with a frontal boundary. it's riding along the front. 50 or so with the bay happening right now, 48 for the coast, 43 for the inland valley. the inland valleys don't get very far today, 57, that will happen by about the noon hour and that's when we of course got the cloudy and showers going on. that's when the bulk of most of the coverage of the rain will be from our standpoint. then by 5:00 p.m., that's what i'm saying, most will be well since gone for the most part just light little drizzle happening. 60 for the bay, 65 coast and 58 inland. so chilly day today but actually downright cold for tomorrow with more activity to be expected. look at our temperatures now for us, mid-40s covering most of the north bay. far east bay in the lower 40s with the peninsula lower 50s with about 50 or so for half moon bay. that's relatively a mild temperature to note but we should also say that the front is just to the north of the peninsula so therefore the impact of the colder
7:38 am
temperatures has not yet been felt. futurecast 4, this is what i'm talking about, here we go, there's the plume of moisture, concord down to redwood city, almost a line riding that front as we talked about. that's high noon, into the early afternoon it covers the east bay down to the south bay but then by 4:00 or so, it's pretty much gone and you see things open up in wine country, the north bay and even parts of the east bay by about 5:00 or so even as late as 6:00, by that time the sun will be setting. but we might get daytime heating lay in the day to help with the temperatures reach the lower 60s because without it you can pretty much forget about it. going to the second part of the program, monday, oh, yeah, 4:00 a.m. gets kind of interesting here. there's more moisture spewing up this way, now we have instability aloft that will drive these storms to give us those claps of thunder and potentially some hail with all of that too. that will take us to about 10:00 a.m. there you see the coverage in the far east bay with the heavier rain showers by that point. do temperatures for you and again remember the clearing skies i made note of.
7:39 am
that's why it's fun to paint greens on here by 3:00 p.m., spokes if we get the sun out a little, that may give us enough daytime heating to break the 60- degree mark, then tonight get into chilly conditions of course, post the front even by 9:00 p.m. 40s start to settle. oakland, 61 by noon, 63 2:00 p.m., 62 by 4:00 and in the 50s already by the dinner hour of 6:00. let you know the entire area in terms of high temperatures today, right along the coast lower 60s at work, 59 san mateo, redwood city at about 60, heading further to the south and the south bay, do see some lower 60s making themselves known here. now, that's true that this system will be dropping and they are in the early afternoon, say about 1:00 or so, but again we may get some late day clearing to allow a couple of rays of sun to help boost the temperatures a touch. then for the inland regions of the far east bay, that's what we are talking about, upper 50s at work, going to be hard to get temperatures move much here with rain in our forecast and the east bay shoreline upper

50s and lower 60s. alameda about 60. richmond might make it up to 64. again with potentially some clearing. the north bay interesting too because we showed you how things cleared out. fairfield maybe 61, napa 61 as well, santa rosa at about 59. tomorrow as part of this program with claps of thunder thrown in there, maybe some hail and, boy, 54 for those inland valleys. by tuesday in theory we should open up, however, with cold air aloft and all this moisture at the surface, maybe some scattered clouds will keep in there. it is sunny as we go on through the day, gradually warm, hope you have your short shreeve for saturday doctors -- sleeves for saturday. the post going around and some people say it appears to be a ripoff. the post asked you to buy $10 gift and mail it to one of your facebook friends, then pass along the post with further instructions nominating other friends to participate. now, if you do, you are
7:41 am
promised to receive up to 36 gifts in the mail from your friends who play along. it is an appealing thought, who doesn't want more for their money, spend only $10 and receive dozens of gifts in exchange but some people are concerned about this. and here's the reason why. it resembles a pyramid scheme. our tech reporter gabe slate looks into whether the gift exchange is actually safe for you. >> reporter: all over tech news headlines and social media people are warning to beware of this facebook sister secret santa gift exchange post calling it a scam. i reached out to facebook. i have not heard back from them yet. because these gifts are sent through the mail to people's homes or work, this involves the postal service and that could be a problem. chain letters are illegal and this is being compared to that, like a facebook version of the chain letter gift scheme. according to the u.s. postal inspection service, the $10 present you put in the mail could be considered of value and the exchange promises you a substantial return.
7:42 am
that is a form of gambling and it's illegal. now, we were ahead of this story, kron4 shared a news article about this on our facebook page as it started trending. hundreds of people commend on our post saying it's not a scam and they have had a successful experience with this secret santa thing. many people referred to it as a positive movement, something that encourages generosity and posstivity -- positivity. i chatted with several people who told me they participated in this and they have not had any trouble and received gifts in the mail as expected. i caught up with jennifer valley, one of our viewers who reached out to us on facebook. >> i don't think it's a sham. if you follow your end of it and everyone does the same, you're going to receive some awesome things back. nice to come home and get some cool surprises in the mail and for people that you know -- from people that you know but haven't seen in a while. >> reporter: jennifer says she sent one gift out and has received nine gifts so far from current and old friends. she has been so moved by this
7:43 am
experience that a couple days ago she posted a picture showing people the proof. she laid out all her gifts she has received so far. >> a beautiful gift basket, a book on being a mom, i received a necklace, a nice thing any mom or woman would enjoy. >> she says this secret santa movement helped her reconnect with an old sorority sister who sent her a gift through this program. >> i haven't talked to her in 15 years. >> if you do this, do it with close friends or family only, people you trust, because your address will be out there. don't do this with strangers on facebook or friends of friends, you know, avoid people you don't know. with your tech trends, gabe splath. spongebob squarepants helped a 7th grader with autism saved a friend from choking at school. spongebob squarepants, he's

7:46 am
3:30 in the morning. the fire department says the fire is not yet completely under control. at this point we don't know yet and they are still investigating if anybody was hurt, how many people displaced by this fire. kron4's avery harper, we sent her on her way over the past hour or so. she should be there any minute. as soon as she gets there, establishes a live shot, we will bring it to you as soon as we possibly can from that fire still burning this morning. crosswalks are meant to keep people safe but what you may not know is some crosswalks have different meaning. stanley roberts explains in this edition of people behaving badly. >> now i know with your immaculate driving record, understanding what the yellow crosswalk means should be a no brainer. you may at times see a crossing guard, helping a kid or two in the yellow crosswalk, like denise palmer. one suggestion, try not to enter the crosswalk until the crossing guard has stepped on
7:47 am
the curb. i'm in unincorporated redwood city. a yellow crosswalks indicates a school crossing zone which means there's a school nearby. so you should be extra careful because at any time a kid could start out -- it also means it's more important that you stop before the limit line, not in the crosswalk which is what often happens. watch as a driver in the white stops when the car is just about to the intersection. in fact, the driver barely stops at all. this driver realizes he is in the crosswalk and backs up. the problem with backing up, if a child darts out behind a car, chances are that could pose a serious problem. also again, i have to stress, that you must stop before the crosswalk, which seems to be a difficult thing for some drivers to comprehend. more drivers i watched stopped inside the crosswalk. also coming to a complete stop
7:48 am
is important as a stop sign or the crossing guard has a stop sign extender. and watch this driver as it piggy backs and rolls the stop sign. then there was this person who totally ignored the stop signs and the yellow crosswalk. and a pedestrian trying to utilize the crosswalk when it's available but drivers remember, every intersection it could be considered an unmarked crosswalk so pay close attention at all times. in unincorporated redwood city -- dave give people some tips. a lot of people get up around now. they want to work out. what's the window for them to work out before rain covers us in the bay area here? i know it's in the north bay -- or it's in the north. >> if you're in the city in san francisco and the east bay, you probably want to get done before nan -- noon. if you're a late riser, i know yesterday was a big night.
7:49 am
>> if you wake up at 4:00 p.m., you've got different problems. >> no, you want to ease into your sunday and read the perrin or whatever -- paper or whatever, you may want do it late in the afternoon. your window of nonopportunity probably would be, you know, late morning through about 4:00 or so, that's when the lion's share we are going to get for downtown san francisco east bay and the south bay going on. i think they are hinting for me to get going here. >> no yellow. yellow is the heaviest. >> that's green in vallejo, up there to wine country too. we need that for the grape to do their performance. this is what i keep talking about, way out there to the west, that little blob there, not as impressive now as it was before but it tells the tale of what we are talking about. you've got a front around here and the plume of moisture going to ride the front and that's not overly impressive. but upstream there will be more happening, what will and i were talking about for your window of nonactivity here, 11:00 a.m.
7:50 am
to 4:00 p.m. here, that's when the lion's share and the bulk of precipitation will be happening, it looks like for san francisco, also east bay and down to the south bay. here it is kind of outlying the front, not a big wind producer either comparatively speaking. sometimes they can. but then the second shoot of fall is tomorrow and that's cold air aloft too helping out with the snow too, lowering those snow levels. here's your daily planner, speaking of which, right now mostly cloudy, cool, kind of overcast most locations, 48 happening at the coast, 43 inland, 50 at the bay, by the noon hour cloudy and showers, again most of it happening, by that point maybe the north bay will start to taper off, 58, 61 going out of the bay, 57, rather, inland and mostly cloudy, cold, that's when the light drizzle, spritses remaining with all of us and this with the lull of the activity going to carry us into the overnight. second batch gets here for tomorrow and sloppy commute with scattered thundershowers thrown in there and maybe even some bouts of hail to look out

the materials inside that tire shop, tires, rims, chemicals. that they immediately raised thd ders, shot thousands of gallons of water down to the flames, kept firefighters outside for their safety. you can see the flames coming from the rooftop there. we talked to maureen kelly five minutes ago and she said that roof is in jeopardy of collapsing. because there are nearby apartments and condominiums, that many of the people who live evacuate. take a look at this. on the right side of your screen, just to give you a lay of the land, perspective, there is a map. 16th and folsom. there is the tire shop that they were focusing on. there have been a little bit of damage to nearby buildings as well. other buildings a little bit away from the tire shop have been told to stay inside because of the breathing issues. fortunately no one rushed to the hospital as far as we know because of the breathing

situation. we also want to pass a long, this is a huge day for a lot of people who want to celebrate the veterans day parade. as far as we know, no impact to that parade as well. it is still scheduled to go on at 11:00. we know that the tire shop, it appears was closed the at the time. but the owner of the tire shop is on the scene. the fire department has closed n that area with the help of the san francisco police department. as far as maybe three to four block radius to make sure their fire trucks have plenty of room. right now they're taking what they're calling the surround and drown approach, meaning they're surrounding this fire, which has now turned into white smoke, which is a good indicator that they now have turned the corner, still continuing to pour thousands of gallons on the building to put out hot spots.

dave spar monitoring the situation as well. fortunately it is not windy in that location. >> we have damp locations with all of this, which is not that unusual but because rain is in our forecast too, this is all adding up to a decent scenario with this at hand. there is a live look at what the winds are like in downtown san francisco. you can see just a one miles per hour wind at last check. elsewhere it's pretty modest. oakland has popped at about 12. that may be a freakish number. for the most part, winds not playing a feature. that's not just a throw away because with the fronts you get the winds usually. after the front passes, that happens this afternoon. there is a live look for a little bit of the breeze that we have at the embarcadero. we are getting some happening at the surface and wet streets from the drizzle that's going on. stormtracker 4 is noting some of us up towards parts of the east bay as you'll notice.

. we continue to follow breaking news out of san francisco. right here are live pictures from the scene. you can see the fire department finally getting a chance to look at the situation. the reason why is for the past two hours, they've had their hands full trying to put out huge flames, thick black smoke at this fire shop. kron fo you are's avery -- kron 4's avery harper just arrived to the scene. >>reporter: it's maureen kelly.

avery just handed me the microphone since i've been here since 8 a.m. and she just rolled up. we decided i'll take over for now. they're still pouring water hard and heavy on this fire. it flared up again a few moments ago and there were big clouds of black smoke coming up. those look like they've mostly dissipated. but obviously the fire is far from being completely out. i saw flames as much as about 15 minutes ago, more flames still coming out. now, you can see in this video here, just how bad the damage is. there is pretty much no roof left on this building here. this fire started at 8 a.m. it was a thick and heavy black smoke that came pouring off this tire shop. obviously tires being tough to put out because of what they're made of. this fire, they had to evacuate
9:55 am
buildings, the surrounding buildings here. there is about a dozen people who were forced to get out. i talked to a woman who got out around 8 a.m. she says a police officer came knocking on her door, telling her to get out. she saw a wall of flames and couldn't believe how big the fire was. there have been no injuries. firefighters have been advising that some of the residents in the area to shelter in place because of what's burning here, the fact that these are tires burning. but i have to tell you from my two hours being out here, i have not really smelled -- it wasn't too bad in terms of the smell. it wasn't until i was right on top of the fire across the street from it that i could really start smelling it. there is a building adjacent to this tire shop that has the sustained damage -- has sustained damage to the back of

it. this is the building that the firefighters i think have been trying to concentrate on keeping it from setting on fire as well. but it looks like there is damage to the rear of that building. the fire chief earlier today told me that what they are doing here is surround and drown. that's the latest here from the scene, maureen kelly, kron 4 news. >> did the fire chief tell you possibly who called the fire in to them and how much of a jump star the fire got? >> she did not say that. they said they were called around 8 a.m. and i know because i live not far from here that i could hear the sirens around that time. there is a fire station not far away from here at all. i would imagine their response to this was receipty quick. >> thank you so much -- pretty quick. >> thank you so much for that, maureen kelly and avery harper. you can see from the bottom up through the roof into the sky

here. the fire department continuing to pour thousands of gallons of water on to the building right now. the ladders extended. it was so hot, so heavy, so dangerous, the fire department knew they're not sending anybody inside. instead raising ladders, shooting water down to the building. that building completely destroyed. to make matters more difficult, because it's a tire shop, they have to deal with the toxic chemicals, the burning tires. fortunately no injuries to anybody inside the building. no injuries to the firefighters, the fire department. we talked to one caller who said that she saw a police officer at her building in her unit telling her to get out. so the fire department, the police department, at the jumped ppñ tl over this, got everybody out as quickly as they could. situation. at this point way too early ç'&lóvókb[6vñznó73ç
