the leading edge of the light rain now on the north and west side of san francisco is making its way close to russian hill right now. downtown will get wet weather shortly. it is raining at the golden gate bridge. i have noticed windshield wipers and wet roads. for tonight, look for the light to moderate rain to spread across the bay area. it to stick around through to tomorrow morning. i will have the weekend forecast coming up. the rain started falling early this afternoon in the north bay. where life in south toledo with the conditions there -- live in south toledo with the conditions there. >> reporter: about 20 minutes ago it started to rain very lightly. just recently it started coming down pretty good. let's take some video, you can see the windshield wipers had to be turned on and people will -- were buttoning up their coats a little bit. there recognizing the wet weather is coming into down -- town. you can see the wind started to

pick up and you can feel the pressure drop. there's a certain feeling you get when the rain and the storm systems are coming through. as i said, it is not causing big problems but a lot of people that are coming to south toledo that may not have been from the area or may not have gotten the word will make their way to the drugstore to buy an umbrella later on. will check with you later on. -- we will will check with you later on. breaking news: one man is dead after his vehicle collided with a parked unoccupied trained in south san francisco. police say the driver was traveling northbound on highway 101 when he failed to turn on the offramp. officer say the driver lost control, plowed through a fence and hit the train. the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. the northbound lanes of highway 101 have been shut down. officer say it will be closed for at least an hour while

police continue to investigate. cro and has a crew on the way to the scene -- kron has crews on the way to the scene. emergency crews are on the one way at the hayward -- runway at the hayward airport. a plane made an emergency landing. its landing gear failed. pilot and the passenger, neither were injured in the crash. rain was one of the challenges for people trying to cross the bay bridge this morning. two separate accidents created chaos. grant lotus is here with amazing pictures. it was difficult this morning. >> it wasn't just one isolated mass. there were multiple issues. a multi-car pileup. you can see this big rig is toppled over. under it, look at that, a red pickup truck.

there was a person in a pickup truck. the driver had to be pulled out by emergency crews. the chp says only minor injuries. the accident happened about 9:30 this morning. all northbound lanes of 880 leading to the bay bridge were closed for about an hour. now, let's roll back the clock, about five hours, the only thing moving in this shot of the bay bridge is a little ferryboat. a truck spilled a load of drywall plaster. the chp had to close down all westbound lanes on the top deck. the plaster combined with the rain proved to be quite a challenge for caltrans workers had to clean it up. >> for thousands of drivers the upper deck of the bay bridge was a giant parking lot. >> chp officers pummeled cars off the bridge at the plea mount -- fremont exit because of the plaster spill. shortly after 5 am they opened

up the right front leg but that barely made a dent. by then, the height of the morning commute was in full swing. caltrans crews brought out a sweet stripper -- street sweeper but it wasn't enough. a worker in the pickup truck drove over the spill very fast and hit the brakes to test if there any traction on the pavement, but it was still too slick. that is when caltrans drops in on the roadway and used a street sweeper to drive the same into the pavement.@6:30, it worked. all lanes past fremont street exit were reopened. the damage was already done. miles away and hours later there was still a huge backup in emeryville as cars were still heading to the toll plaza. >> many people watched us in the morning, paid attention to our advice and avoided the bay bridge and chose other bridges in the bay area. but they weren't much luckier. those people were joined by other people avoiding the bay bridge. it was a tough commute -- all the way around. here, we

is the person who got shot. >> reporter: the owner of this restaurant is showing me surveillance video of two men who ran into the diner after their vehicle was riddled with bullets while they were driving on the i 84 -- i 80 freeway thursday afternoon. this is video from our partnership. >> they both came inside and went inside the bathroom first. they then came outside and the one person asked if i could call an ambulance. >> reporter: he says this man you see on the cell phone is the one who asked him to call the paramedics for the injured person. however, he says the guy on the phone didn't hang around for long.>> he dropped in here and the injured person says please don't go but he said no, i have to go. he ran away and he said please call my baby mama at least.>> you can see the man leaving denny's here. the owner of the restaurant called 911.

he needed help and you were here to help him. >> yes, because we are human beings and we have a soft heart. we have to help everyone. >> this incident is the latest in a string of recent car to car shootings along the stretch of the 80 freeway. california highway patrol investigators say in each case it appears that the victims were targeted.>> the public is not in any danger. these targets were specific and not random. >> while the motive for the shooting is under investigation, sources tell kron at the previous car to car shootings are linked to an ongoing feud between rival gangs in richmond and alejo -- in valeo. san francisco police are looking for a man who assaulted another man at a bus stop. it happened early this morning leaving the victim with life- threatening injuries. police say the victim was waiting for a bus when he was attacked at san bruno avenue and bacon street around 1245 in the morning. he told police that the man started to beat him with a stick for no apparent reason. he passed out. when he came to

he walked to the police bayview station and was taken to a hospital. his injuries include a skull fracture, broken ribs and a punctured lung. in san francisco, a rally on the steps of the hall of justice calling for the firing of police chief greg sir. protesters do not like the way the officers handled the case of mario woods calling their behavior is -- excessive force. woods, a suspect in a stabbing case was shot a number of times while waiting a knife at police . that happened earlier this month. with an increasing number of attacks against muslims in the wake of the violence in paris in san bernardino, arabs, muslims and other supporters rallied on the steps of san francisco city hall this afternoon. they say to off -- too often muslims are being scapegoated in the war against terrorism. they say they have become targets, shot at, threatened and their paces -- places of

a wild chase in southern california for a suspected mail thief. the started near laguna. sheriffs pursued this honda civic with three people inside. the chase that dangerous at times with the driver blowing through stop signs and red lights and driving on the road side of the road. after about an hour, the driver pulled into a gas station and try to make a run for it as you see in the video, but he was quickly caught by police. tonight, police say you should be on the lookout for a

home logo -- burglar in the south bay. we are back with new surveillance video. detectives have not been able to crack this case. this is brand-new surveillance video. the little dog did not deter this the. -- beef. they are asking for the public to get a good look at him. he doesn't take the keyboard or the orchid or the globe, he does grab a bag and starts to fill it up. this happened back on september 15 at two in the afternoon. there is a couple of still images. he did leave with that bag. though police have not said specifically what was taken. we will continue to keep you posted here. police in dublin are asking for your help in identifying a bank robber. they say that man made off with an undisclosed amount of money from a wells fargo bank. he is

described as a white male, 6'5" tall with brown hair. he took off in a late model four-door honda accord. good news for a church where a thief stole christmas present as we reported yesterday. someone broke into a storage locker and stole the christmas present which were meant for local children this holiday. the break happened at our later -- lady of the pillar catholic church. since word of the crime spread, the church has received donation and money to cover most of the lost. the church plans to start delivering gifts next week. last fall, two major california wildfires will cost tech peers -- tax payers nearly a quarter billion dollars to clean up. that money would pay for only the lake county and calaveras county fires. state finance director told lawmakers the cleanup is unprecedented in its size and its complexity. 2015 has been one of the worst fire years in california's

history with nearly 10,000,000 acres going up in smoke. that is an area the size of connecticut and massachusetts combined. the wet weather is starting in the bay area just in time for the evening commute making the drive more difficult. we have at the -- heaviest rain in the north bay. we're showing a batch of fairly heavy rain offshore. this will make its way toward the peninsula and about the next 30 minutes. it is already coming down into marin and napa counties. also, if you light showers head of the main rain band that has been moving to san francisco. here is one shower working its way across the bay toward berkeley, albany and emily bell. the rain will pick up in about five minutes their. it is coming down in a good clip. this is just to the east of nevada on highway 37. this is a difficult drive on a nice day. it is even worse today. this is right around the raceway where the rain is steady, moderate and dispatches pushing towards alejo --

now at five that 30 -- 5:30. we're staying on top of breaking news, a deadly crash involving a pickup truck in and unoccupied train. kron4 got to the scene right now. what is the latest there? >> reporter: east grant still remains close. as i step out of the way, you can see fire crews out here, police activity out here. they are still investigating. the truck is still on the side of this train. again, that train was not occupied at the time. let's get it from above. you can see our review from above. you can see the pickup truck on its side. i just spoke to south san francisco police they tell me the driver of that truck was exiting northbound 101 coming off of the offramp at a high rate of speed. somehow lost control of that truck, plowed through the fence

and then struck that parked train. again, no one was on the train. there was only one person inside the truck. we do know the person inside the truck has died, that is according to the lieutenant on scene. he tells me also that when the truck hit the train it burst into flames. it was a very dramatic scene. he also tells me witnesses on 101 say they saw the driver of the truck driving very erratically just before the crash. let's come back out here to the ground. again, you can see all the crews out here still investigating this. it will be a while until east grand is reopened. i can tell you, luckily traffic has not been impacted much by this as the investigation continues. i did ask the lieutenant of drugs or alcohol could've been a factor, he says there something -- that is something they will be looking at. will keep you updated. does we will keep you updated. storm tracker four

showings soaking rain. the main band is off the peninsula. the rain will definitely intensified from san francisco all the way down through san mateo and redwood city by 6 o'clock. there have been a few light rain showers out ahead of this main band of rain showers. currently some steady, moderate to even heavy rain into the north bank around novato and napa. here's a live you. richmond bridge, it is what out there. this has been light rain so far in richmond. it is going to intensify pretty quickly. this is just the first of four storms coming up between now and christmas. storm to is doing on sunday afternoon with light to moderate rain. that you go through much of the evening. and then another system for monday night and tuesday with more rain expected. the strongest of these could be coming for christmas eve, late thursday night into friday.

he talked to the family and the transit agency. he is here now with a report. >> reporter: the girl is 9 but you 3 when this happened. the case has been caught up in a legal process for 6 years. now, both barts and the family have a message for the millions of people who use bart escalators. she is pain-free now and can even dance. but her footwear from that fateful day at the 16th street station in san francisco tells a different story. her boot is blackened and busted. her stock was bloodied and toward. shelf lost her right big toe. >> partial amputation. we did a procedure to suture that toe back together. >> reporter: her mom with her daughter standing in front of her on the right side of the escalator, that incident 6 years ago is still fresh in her mind. >> i saw something and then she was screaming that her boot was caught. i just pulled that boot because those boot had a handle.

showers and then the sun beginning to show up at the north bay. by 730 we will see the sunshine began to show up. through the morning, some light and passing isolated showers. that should be all done around noon. for the afternoon look for a mostly sunny day. we have improving conditions but in other weather system is on the way for sunday that will increase clouds for sunday morning which will bring in the chance for light to moderate rain for sunday afternoon and evening. for the system, tonight, look for rain amounts on the order of the half inch from the southbound to east bay. three quarters of an inch in the bay. look for amount on the order of 1 inch plus for some of the wettest valleys. and then into the higher elevations, into the hills, perhaps 2 inches or more. an inch is possible in the santa cruz mountain. here's how the weekend is shaping up, we have the rain for tonight, a few showers for saturday morning.

van aken was tracking the storm . what can we expect for the rest of the night? >> the rain will pick up for san francisco, the bill is still also into open -- the peninsula, also into oakland. the rain is coming down at a fairly steady place -- pace into san francisco and a lot of the peninsula. here's live storm tracker for. the green is light rain, yellow moderate, where you see the orange that is heavy rain. that is what we have for most of the westside of san francisco extending up into the north bay. as we get closer to 19th avenue, sunset boulevard, we're watching the rain intensified. this is all moving east down at about 30 miles per hour. this will pick up into downtown, san francisco, the financial district and into marin county. right around the golden gate bridge and sausalito, heavy rain right on 101. this extends to san rafael.

he has been tracking the conditions. how is it looking? >> we just saw jeff and sausalito he crossed the growing gate in san francisco. -- golden gate in san francisco. traffic is not too bad. taking you to the bay bridge toll plaza, you can see a little bit of a backup. it is slow going heading into san francisco. the san mateo bridge, heavy certainly headed to the peninsula. you see the traffic on the right side of the screen. how about the san rafael bridge, you see the raindrops on our camera. it is very backed up if you're on that bridge trying to get to marin from the east bay. that direction -- going in that direction is entirely red. you see the bay bridge headed into san francisco is all red as well. if you are on 880 right here, there is a backup that is intense. although, there is a fair amount of green which could be

rose -- gross -- worse considering the rush hour and the holidays evening. >> you can take -- stand touch with traffic on our website -- stand touch with traffic on our website. video from our helicopter partnership from abc 7 shows a paint spilled that shut down all westbound lanes on interstate 80 at fremont street. it happened just before 4 o'clock in the morning. the effects were held -- felt all morning long. all lanes were back open just before 7. just hours later, a 12 car pileup on the northbound 880 connector in the westbound lanes of the bay bridge. a box truck tipped and crushed a red pickup truck. amazingly, the driver of the truck managed to escape with minor injuries. traffic on the connector was shut down for 2 hours.

there is breaking news out of south san francisco. that is where one person has been killed after a pickup truck slammed into a freight train. we are live now with new video and late details. >> reporter: the medical examiner has just arrived on scene. that truck is still out here right now. investigators are out here taking pictures and checking out the scene. take a look at this video shot about 25 minutes ago. you can see that pickup truck is wedged in between a tree and the train. we are told that the driver of the truck was heading up northbound 101 and was coming off at the east grand avenue exit. police on the scene tell me the driver was going upwards of 100 miles an hour on that offramp. it is a very sharp curve and that is when the driver lost control, plowing through the fence and hitting a

tree. take a listen to win -- what one police officer describes how that tree was when the truck struck it. >> the tree that it hit was 18 inch diameters at the base and it knocked it off at the base. >> reporter: pretty big tree and a very fast moving truck. we do know the truck exploded into flames. once it hit the tree. it was a pretty nasty scene. the cargo train was only dinged up just a little bit. the tree took the bulk of the impact. no one on the cargo train at the time. traffic out here has not been bad. luckily the investigation does continue. i asked police in drugs and alcohol were a factor, they said they will be investigating that. it has been more than a

month since that tour bus careened out of control for several blocks and crashed into scaffolding in front of taurus and shoppers in you and -- union square. now, the lawyer for the driver of the bus says his ability to investigate what caused the accident has been stymied. >> reporter: we have been extremely frustrated. this attorney represents the man who was behind the wheel of the runaway bus. they claim the double-decker experienced a multi-system failure making it impossible to stop as it accelerated down post street until the driver was able to ram it into scaffolding to keep it from continuing down the hill. the tour bus is still in the hands of the san francisco police department. the drivers lawyer thought his experts would be able to get access to it this week, but that didn't happen. >> now, we are told we are going to be delayed until mid- january before the bus is

new tonight, the monterey county couple accused of killing 2 young children could face the death penalty. tammie joy huntsman and a 17- year-old face first-degree murder charges for the death of a 3-year-old and a six-year-old. the young brother and sister were in their custody. their bodies were found in a plastic container inside a storage unit in redding last sunday. authority say the children died from ongoing physical abuse. now, the older sister of the 2 young victims is speaking out about their deaths.>> a completely tore me apart. you see these children, they are so innocent and so young

the rain has been coming down this does consistently since about 5 o'clock in the afternoon. the streets are covered with water. umbrellas are a requirement for people walking around unless you want to get completely soaked. the rain has been coming down fairly consistently. there is no wind to report . here in south san francisco, a driver losing control of a truck as they were coming off of the offramp here at east grand after driving erratically on northbound 101. that was according to witnesses and police. you can see what is left of that truck after slamming into a tree. he slammed into the treat at close to 100 miles an hour which also hit a cargo train. the driver has died. the medical examiner is unseen trying to figure out what caused the driver to lose control. i did ask police is drug and alcohol were a factor, they said they will be looking into that. a holiday tradition

disrupted by controversy in san jose. it began when the school district canceled the end you'll -- annual field trip were kindergartners walked to a nearby coffee shop to visit santa claus. the decision came after a jewish parent complained that the holiday curriculum should be more inclusive, more diverse. about 30 families boycotted classes on friday and went to see santa anyways. the district had no comments leaving parents hoping for a better outcome next year. in san jose kron4 news. here at sfo on friday which is set to be the biggest dose busiest travel day of the season. 160,000 people are expected to come in and out of this airport all day long. i spoke to some people who were standing in line and they has said they had no idea and they would've made other travel arrangements had they known
