and that breaking news we are following is out of ventura county in southern california where a grass fire is spreading out of control and closing a major highway along the coast. the fire started shortly after 1:00 this morning in ventura county. it burned over a thousand acres and is quickly spreading. as of right now there is zero containment. >> about 30 homes have been threatened and mandatory evacuations have been issued for people in the area. more than 500 firefighters are working the fire right now and a stretch of highway 101 is closed as crews are working to put the fire out. the red cross and volunteers put up shelters in the area.

as of now firefighters do not know what started the fire. they are expected to have a brief ongoing the fire at 10:00 this morning. and turning our aattention the weather, there is a wind advisory issued for the ventura area. >> yes. let's find out how that plays a role in the fire. >> yes. for us we don't have much in the way of winds up here, which is odd, but we have the offshore flow in place all over the golden state playing into that situation. we have temperatures that -- one of the things is because we have a little breeze, that kept our temperatures supported a little bit overnight. for example, we are looking at lower 30s in the north bay, when in the forecast we are expecting to be in the 20s. it doesn't quite materialize too much because there is a little breeze at work. for us it is a breeze. down south it is a heavy wind to watch out for. 45 for example in downtown san francisco, shielded around the perimeter of the bay as we talked about. the freeze warning noted that

and did not include the east bay shoreline or downtown san francisco. everybody else is involved in this until 9:00 this morning for the freeze warning. by the way they may reinstate this for tonight. oakland, our breakdown, warms up fairly rapidly. short lived, however, as the sun sets early in time of year. it will take us down to 46 at 6:00 p.m. the breakdown by noon, mostly sunny and cool, temperatures in the lower 50s. 46 in inland spots. by 4:00 p.m. we have mild temperatures, for a time being in the lower 50s, then cold again tonight. we will take a look at that. a little chance of rain developing before we put this weekend to bed. back to you. >> thank you. back to news this morning, one person was shot and killed by police in palo alto after charging at officers with a knife. it happened last night just before 9:30. palo alto police responded to reports of someone threatening another person at their home. when the officers arrived

police say the suspect charged at the officers with a knife and was then shot. the person died later at the hospital. no officers were hurt in the shooting. the suspect's identity has not yet been released. a father mourns his 25-year- old son killed in a head-on collision in the early hours of christmas day. it happened along highway 1 of pacifica at 3:00 in the morning. two people died in the fiery collision between a uber car and a second car driving in the wrong direction. we have more from the father in pacifica, an interview you will only see on kron 4. >> reporter: there are still unanswered questions about this crash that happened along highway 1 in pacifica. christmas day for two families will never be the same. >> he loved everybody. >> reporter: before jason gilbride went out with his friend on christmas eve, he stopped to see his parents. he gave his dad a hug and tie dyed shirt, an early christmas present that turned out to be the last gift he ever gave.

>> the tie dye is great, but i thanked him and told him to be safe. and he never came home. >> reporter: jason was in a uber car on highway 1 when his car was hit by a toyota corolla going the wrong way on paloma avenue. in the aftermath of the crash the cars are barely recognizable. the corolla burst into flames and the driver died. jason died, and the driver of the uber will survive. now the coroner's office is investigating whether the driver going the wrong direction was impaired. >> it took him away from us. >> reporter: jason's dad wants to know the answer, especially since his son knew better than to drink and then get behind the wheel. >> he was always wanting to do the right thing. >> reporter: we received a statement from uber calling this a terrible tragedy. they said their thoughts and prayers with the families of those killed and with the injured driver who is still

recovering. reporting in pacifica, kron 4 news. one person is dead following a car crash in brentwood. it happened just before 11:00 yesterday morning on eastbound highway 4 near the lone tree way off ramp. officials say a gray suv overturned and landed on its wheels in the crash. the driver who died has been identified as 37-year-old barrett joseph. the cause of the accident is under investigation. and in other bay area news a man was shot and killed in hayward after a confrontation between bart officers. kron 4 news was on the scene all day yesterday. officials are saying the student suspect was connected to another person. >> reporter: smartphone video shows the tense moments just after a christmas morning shooting involving a bart police officer. >> right here. we told him stay down, stay

down. at the time he was really trying to to get up but we were holding him down. >> reporter: this video was shot while he and his father helped the wounded officer. >> me and my jacket got his gloves and took off his shirt and secured him. >> reporter: the shooting happening after 11:00 outside the hayward bart parking garage on grand street. according to the bart deputy chief, jeffrey jennings, the suspect is identified as 27- year-old charles gedding, acting strange. the two bart police officers approached him. when they did he ran and then police say he turned around, hitting and wounding one of the officers. the other officer fired back, hitting gedding multiple times. witnesses heard at least six gunshots. police found a dead man in the the back offense a u-haul that

much uniform across the area. 33 in santa rosa, one of the cool spots. vallejo is 32. livermore is 31. now the sun is joining us, so forget about it. a freeze warning is technically still place but the national weather service may pull that at any moment. 34 in san francisco. there is scattered frost. the freeze warning with was never in downtown san francisco and the east bay shoreline, even though it is colored in, was focusing on the valley. they may pull this because the sun is now joining us. a lot of places have failed to reach the freezing mark or below. why? a little breeze kept the temperatures supported. now we will see 50s across a good portion of the bay area. but the hills may hold on to some chillier 40s. at 11:00 tonight the 30s will get a bit of progress and more scattered frost like this

morning, as well. it is contingent, of course, on your location. at 6:00 we are buffered by the coast. the bay is a little better supported in terms of the overnight lows. keeping them out of the 30s and mild 40s for the east bay shoreline. into tomorrow, not as warm as today. partially due to the fact of the incoming cloud cover that we have that plays into our forecast on your sunday. maybe some showers before sunset. that is what we have upstream here. it is a quick mover that will be by here by monday morning. it will be gone and we will go into a sunny mode. lower 50s today along the coast. even the bay shoreline 55. palo alto 55, as well and the warm spot is the peninsula we see. no mention of showers until sunday late in the day and night. temperatures hold into the 50s. we don't cool off anymore than we are now. the valleys are in the low 30s by this point and mostly sunny

and breaking news we are following this morning out of southern california. >> that is where a grass fire is spreading out of control and closed a major highway along the cost. the fire started shortly after 1:00 this morning near solimar beach in ventura county. it already burned over 1,000- acres and is quickly spreading. 30 homes have been evacuated and mandatory evacuations have been issued for people in the area. more than 500 firefighters are working the fire. >> a stretch of highway 101 is

closed as crews are working to put the fire out, likely causing major traffic nightmare for those traveling on the freeway. the american red cross is setting up shelters in the area but firefighters do not know what caused the blaze. and in australia fires there have a caused hundreds of people that leave their homes. at least 116 homes are destroyed. australian officials say no one was injured in the fire. and big news this morning, severe weather hammering the southeast and it just will not let up. here is a look at the widespread flooding and damage it caused throughout several southern states. theme minneapolis are picking up the pieces after 14 tornadoes slammed the state

killing seven people. and in tennessee heavy rain and flooding causing dangerous conditions in chattanooga. the massive flooding in the area is causing river banks to overflow and causing car accidents and river banks to flow over. and reports of more people missing after heavy rains hammer parts of alabama, as well. the governor there has declared a state of emergency because of the widespread flooding. 117 home there is have been overcome by water and threat of wet weather remains with the national weather service saying another system is expected to hit today from the southern plains and middle minneapolis valley into the lower -- mississippi valley into the lower great lakes. and now to the bay area weather. el nino is bringing warmer conditions across the u.s. . >> yes. we have meteorologist dave hart here to explain how the weather will affect all the people, 14 million of them, traveling back home this holiday weekend. >> we are looking the at at

least for us a frosty start. we may repeat this performance again for your sunday. now, a look at those temperatures, there. you will notice with the freeze warning we have in place still, a very few locations are actually below freezing. livermore jumps out at 31. 32 for vallejo. we had a little breeze overnight, enough to support the temperatures a little bit. in fact, they may -- the national weather service may pull the freeze warning, perhaps, but it is in place as a formality at least until 9:00. san francisco downtown was never in that and the east bay shoreline shielded it a little bit, buffered by the bay area, may be out of that, as well. this may be re-issued again for tonight because of the dry air in place. the ventura county's flow pattern is what we have been hearing about and is very dry. san jose, 51 by 2:00 p.m. then quickly drops to the 40s as we head to evening and lose the day time heating. lower 50s for the noon hours.

christmas so retailers are trying to make up with it with blowout sales and deep discounts on merchandise inside the stores. i talked to a couple women waiting outside macy's doors before it opened this morning. take a listen to what they had to say. >> looking for stuff we thought we would get for christmas and didn't get and that is on sale. >> being in san francisco this early in the morning is so fun over christmas. >> and not crowded. >> reporter: are you here for lines for sales? after christmas sale in the using gift card in the. >> sales, gift cards, looking for the super sales, stuff like that. >> reporter: now, i am told here at macy's they are slashes prices up to 75% on some of the merchandise. if you are looking for deals, not a bad place to go. back to knew the studio. >> thank you, avery. we will check back with you a little later.

and in other news fedex workers cost extra hours after customers took to social media to complain about late deliveries. fedex said stores opened on christmas day in a limited capacity, delivering packages that were supposed to arrive before christmas. fedex says the delays were due to heavier than usual last- minute shopping volumes and severe weather and tornadoes broke out in parts of the u.s. that didn't help either. fedex estimated making 317 million deliveries, an increase of 12% compared to last year. on january 1st, minimum wage workers in oakland will be seeing a slight bump in their pay. the minimum wage is $12.25 and will be raised to $12.55 per hour. as a result of the bailout measure, the minimum wage increased from $9 to $12.25 back in may. the measure will affect nearly

48,000 workers in oakland. and in world news 11 of the 29 people trapped in a mine collapse in china were rescued earlier this morning. the mine collapse happened on friday. rescue teams are working against time to save the remaining 18 trapped workers. authorities say that further rescue operations are especially dangerous due to the risk of another collapse. the cause of this collapse is still under investigation. it is a big week for movies. you have five new ones to choose from. the movie details coming to you after the break. >> and a live look outside right now at the san mateyo bridge on this saturday morning. the sunrise is coming up and the weather is quite chilly. we will be right back. >> and for the weekend as the

control in ventura county. the solimar beach fire has up to 500 firefighters fighting it now and is zero percent contained. people there are being asked to evacuate their homes. >> and we want to turn you are i attention to bay area weather in ventura, as well, because a wind advisory has been issued for that area. >> yes. we have more with the weather today. i realized when i saw the seven- day forecast, dave, a little earlier, that was the last one for 2015. >> that is right. >> we are rounding out the year. >> that is right. we will be improving a into 2016 in terms of our temperatures, fu. you are talking about what is going on in so cal, that offshore wind going on. we have the dry air we get with that and the minor affects here in the bay area of a little breeze. but the affects we are getting

is combating the temperatures falling overnight, which means even though we have the freeze warning in place for most of the bay area, except for downtown san francisco, the temperatures have fallen to below freezing in many areas. santa rosa is 33 right now. novato is 32. livermore is 31. with the sun joins us now we go into warm up mode but that little bit of a breeze makes a difference in the shielded wind areas were temperatures were able to fall. frost is an issue this morning, too. in the futurecast today i know nothing happens. did anything happen all day? no. basically a sunny day. it is on the cool side, but it is the end of december. tomorrow things get interesting. 7:00 a.m. clouds start to build. that may cause perhaps colder temperatures in the north bay because clouds are another thing that combat temperatures falling overnight. then we will have scattered clouds throughout the day. at 4:00 p.m. we have showers along the coast and north bay.

that may be late enough in the day to go into evening mode, but you can get everything done during the day tomorrow. showers are a possibility particularly for the north bay and coast for late in your sunday plans. 9:00 a.m. on monday things improve as the skies open up. temperatures in the east bay shoreline, lower to middle 50s for a high today. 55 in berkley. in the seven-day forecast we warm up a little bit. up to 60 for much of the inland valleys come thursday and ringing in the new year, even as the overnight lows start to improve, up to 34. >> take a look at this rare snow, speaking of weather, in all place, las vegas. mother nature gets into the sin city with its first christmas snow day in seven years. forecasters say the snow started coming down in the city around midnight. snow is so rare in las vegas though it is not uncommon in the nearby mountains. they got some white stuff.

from different sources. this year we brought over four full truckloads of gently used clothes, a truckload of brand new toys and over $5,000 in cash donations. >> reporter: one of those on the receiving end focus charity being offered is edmund of martinez. >> the families come and join together. if they have a situation in life where they can't get too many gifts for their children, it is too hard for them, but here they give them their ultimate dreams and dreams come alive. >> reporter: robert walkers that listen up volunteering -- walker has been volunteering here for the past 19 years. >> it gives joy to me to come and contribute. >> reporter: christmas organizers say this year the charity lost some participation from corporations that helped out in previous year, however perez says judging by the attendance in 2015, it appears those in need have decreased as

well. in concord, kron 4 news. the salvation army prepared 3,800 meals in san francisco for christmas yesterday. the meals were delivered to people who cannot leave their homes. kron 4 news was there on christmas morning and spoke with the salvation army representative cindy foley that says all the help is making a difference. >> this all started three months ago, ordering your food, signing up of volunteers and registering of people that would like to have a meal delivered to them. this he have been cooking and getting ready for a little over two weeks. it takes on weeks and weeks of work and we bring in extra staff to help 500 people that will show up at people's door this is morning with a smile and a meal. >> the volunteers showed up as early as 4:30 in the morning on christmas to help start preparing for the day. this tradition has brought joy children over the past 15 years as tons of toys were corrected at the annual lefty
